Here we are again! This is the quarter of the
year packed with holidays, special themes and programs.
This issue of AdvAnce nj also launches us into a new
Year.
I pray that every minister and church has prospered
in this turbulent world. Hard financial times, disasters,
terrorism, sexual revolutions and, so much more, present
opportunities for God’s people to “arise and build” (see
nehemiah 2). Amidst the rubble, believers hold the tools
and building material to create something new. We have
the power to shine a light in the darkness, to build a
spiritual base and create hope for the despairing. This is
our time to share faith and practice what we preach.
I hope the previous three quarters of this calendar year
have found you to be missional. I pray that the challenges
ahead will inspire you to mobilize people and resources as
an army of hope.
Once again, we want this little magazine to encourage
and resource you and your ministry. We’d love to hear
from you and pray for your every success!
Fourth QUARTER 2011 | ADVANCE New Jersey | 3

one of my most
unpleasant duties is attending to
ministerial failure. I have had to deal with marital
infidelity, spousal abuse, sexual abuse, pornography,
alcohol and gambling addictions, extortion and even
embezzlement. These are just a few. More recently we
see Internet, Facebook and text messaging traps.
When a failure is confessed, the minister must
immediately surrender his credential card. That card,
most often nestled in a wallet and untouched except
for annual replacement, contains a very important
piece of information. It could prevent a sinful
mudslide! On the back of every Id card is printed
“Ag HelpLine. For confidential counseling or
referral for Assemblies of god ministers and their
family members.” I’ve often asked a minister, as he
surrenders his card, “did you ever reach out though
this confidential helpline?” I have never had a
person say he sought the help offered at any time, let
alone at the point of a major moral failure.
I realize that it is often difficult for ministers to
turn to their leadership when they are struggling.
They value complete confidentiality, which is not
always possible. Most feel vulnerable and ashamed.
However, considering that a minister’s moral failure
usually jeopardizes his livelihood, his family’s security,
his ability to work in future ministry and even his
retirement benefits . . . shouldn’t he at least consult an
anonymous, confidential and free counseling help?
Must a moral struggle become a moral failure?
4 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
“A prudent man
sees danger and
takes refuge, but the
simple keep going
and suffer for it.”
Proverbs 22:3
Here is a quote from a brochure titled, “A
HelpInG HAnd,” produced by the Assemblies of
God pastoral care Office. It is relative to the Help line
information printed on your credential card.
“The 800 counseling helpline number
for ministers and their family members
will enable you to get quick, professional,
Christian help in your time of crisis
or concern. With the ability to remain
anonymous, you will be able to openly
share whatever you need, without fear.
The counselor will offer advice, referral, or
specific direction. Not only will this phone
service help with crisis intervention, but it
will also help you deal with your situation
before it becomes long lasting.”
Friends, end 2011 strong and start the new Year
in good health. I implore you, whatever the burden,
problem or temptation pestering you, take out that
card and make that anonymous call. It could make
all the difference between your struggle and a moral
failure.
caring for you,
Brother Carl

By the time you read this a couple
of months will have passed, but today my heart
is breaking as I have watched the starving people
of Somalia make the dreadful trek to Kenya to
find food. Many will die along the way, others
will find little food and
even less hope when they
arrive. Starvation is a
terrible injustice in our
world. What bugs me is it’s
something we can change.
Thank God for AG
disaster Fund and convoy
of Hope! They really are
making a difference.
But there was another
thing breaking my heart
today. It’s not just a famine
of tangible food, but of
spiritual food. could it be
the prophecy of Amos 8:11 is
happening right before our eyes?
“the days are coming,”
declares the Sovereign
LORD, “when i will send
a famine through the
land—not a famine of food
or a thirst for water, but a
famine of hearing the words
of the LORD.”
Friends, I need to tell you that verse scares
me! It scares me that a generation is growing up
before us that are somewhat “wordless.” It scares
me that many believers have scaled down their
personal input from God’s Word to a Sunday
sermon and a paragraph from My daily Bread.
So it’s my prayer that all
of us would once again
realize - “it’s not by bread
alone, but by every word
that proceeds from the
mouth of God.”
just a thought,
“According to one survey, we are
the unhappiest nation on earth, with more mental
disorders and depression per capita than any other
country.” chuck colson, The Faith, 202.
putting God first is sorely needed in new jersey.
“…seek first the kingdom of god and His
righteousness, and all these things shall be
added to you.” Jesus
When God is first, all the stuff of life gets
aligned.
“…i hoped to experience the only happiness
most people find during their brief life in this
world. i also tried to find meaning…but as i
looked at everything i had worked so hard to
accomplish, it was all so meaningless. it was like
chasing the wind.” solomon, Ecclesiastes 2
“God is not weLCoMe
in our schools.” ever heard that phrase? Well,
it’s not true! His presence is still found in our
country’s schools – thanks to the missionary
heart of students and the influence of light for
the lost’s Book of Hope.
The Book of Hope is a book that contains
portions of Scripture. These passages are targeted
to a specific age group, making God’s words
immediately relevant to their life situations!
Millions of copies of the Book of Hope have been
distributed to youth and children across the
United States.
6 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
Without God first, people in new jersey will
always be chasing wind.
“Why do I have 3 Super Bowl rings and still
think there’s something greater out there for
me…Me, i think, ‘god, it’s got to be more than
this.’ I mean…this can’t be what it’s all cracked
up to be.” Tom Brady, new england patriots
Quarterback, cBS.
people are searching. A mild dose of God will
not help in new jersey.
“i have come in order that you might have life —
life in all its fullness.” Jesus
jersey needs your best word from God. Hope
is in your hands. don’t blow it. Thanks for giving
your best.
From the lFTl archives, listen to some of the
testimonies of christian youth:
“My friend and I were at our lockers and as I
took my backpack out of the locker he saw my
campus missions tag and asked me, “Who is
jesus?” … I had my Bible and read the verses to
him. I also gave him a Book of Hope to read.”
– ryan
“This year I have really stepped out in my
school to be loving … I invited a couple of my
friends who don’t know jesus to come to church
with me. They came and all accepted christ as
their Savior! I gave each of them a Book of Hope
to read so they could dig deeper into the Word.
… I am also starting a campus club at my school.”
– Hayley
Thank you for giving to lFTl so that God’s
hand can be in our schools!
to all who are participating in our Missions
project, In Pursuit of India. The new jersey
district has taken on the task of training
30,000 new pastors for India at a total cost
of $150,000. We’ve received pledges of
$80,000 and need $70,000 more to reach
our goal. We have the greatest opportunity
to change the destiny of a nation. The
younger generation is questioning old
traditions and beliefs of their families and is
looking for answers. Many are turning their
lives over to the lord, jesus christ. There are 1,000’s
of salvations daily in India. God has set the stage,
the India churches are praying, and we are coming
alongside of them to train new pastors. This is a
Macedonia call. Are we listening?
$3 per student is all it takes to place eight books
into the hands of these new pastors for study,
training and equipping to reach the 1.2 billion
people of India. This is the best money you will
ever spend. For $2 more per student, we can also
provide transportation to the training center.
• Total Financial Faith Promises
Received: $856,235
• Total Financial Offerings Received
(as of June 30, 2011): $788,522
8 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
We must go out into the remote areas of
India and set up training locations to instruct
and equip these new pastors. You may even
consider becoming one of their teachers! every
pastor is an agent of change. every church is a
ministry center. The poor will be fed, children at
risk will be rescued, education will be provided,
unreached people groups will be reached,
spiritual transformation will take place and hope
will be offered. Trained pastors are the answer to
India’s need.
Think of the areas around India that will also be
affected by these new pastors: pakistan,
Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan,
nepal, china, Tibet, and Kashmir.
This project is an ongoing
endeavor as the harvest
demands strategic change.
please, if you haven’t done so,
join the new jersey district
in completing our Goal of
$150,000 to train 30,000 new
pastors. This is an investment
worth making.
ANOTHER NOTE: On October 8, 2011 the new jersey district Missions department is
sponsoring a Missions drive-In. It will be held at Full Gospel church, 1607 jacksonville
road, Burlington. This will be similar to the Fly-Ins we used to have. It will be a quick
paced, fast moving event that starts at 9:00am and ends shortly after 1:00pm. lunch will
be provided, so please rSvp to the Missions office if you plan to attend. We will have
representation from the General council of the Assemblies of God, World Missions
department. plan to be there!

For two years, scientists sequestered
themselves in an artificial environment called
Biosphere 2. Inside their self-sustaining
community, the Biospherians created a number
of mini-environments, including a desert, rain
forest, even an ocean. nearly every weather
condition could be simulated except one,
wind. Over time, the effects of their windless
environment became apparent. A number
of acacia trees bent over and even snapped.
Without the stress of wind to strengthen the
wood, the trunks grew weak and could not hold
up their own weight.
paul says in ephesians 3:17, “let your roots
grow down into him, and let your lives be built
on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the
truth you were taught, and you will overflow
with thankfulness.”
12 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
Many times people will comment on all the
negativity in their lives. They will complain
about the hardships, trials and misfortunes
that come their way. But where would we be if
everything always went smoothly? It is in the
hardships of life that many people reach out
to the living God. It is in our frailty that we
realize that we are finite beings. It is in the times
of adversity that we come to understand how
important it is that we are planted and rooted
in the Word of God. It is then that His promises
stand true through thick and thin. So if you find
yourself in a hard place, dig your feet in, stay
planted and watch the glory of the lord bring
you through.
(Part One)
I am intrigued every time I see a
sign that indicates a business is “Under neW
MAnAGeMenT.” Questions pop into my mind: “I
wonder what happened to the former management?”
“did the previous management fail?” Simply put, good
intentions are not enough to make good managers. In
our lives, things we thought would go right can go very
wrong if we don’t know how to manage them properly.
As the actor john Wayne said, “life’s hard! It’s even
harder when you’re stupid!”
Hopefully we’re not stupid! Whatever the reason for
why things fail, new management is sometimes needed
to turn things around. Of course it would be much
better if we could empower the current management
to improve. While money and profit are usually the
motivators in the business world, men of God have
another motivator: awareness that we have a finite
amount of time in this life before we stand before God
and give an accounting!
The psalmist said, “Teach us to number our days
aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (psalm
90:12) A heart of wisdom understands that life is short
and what we do with it carries eternal consequences.
james challenged his readers with this thought: “Why,
you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.
What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little
while and then vanishes.” james 4:14 (nIv) james’
rather sobering assessment gives us good reason to
consider managing both our time and resources well.
14 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
Be very careful, then,
how you live—not as unwise
but as wise, making the
most of every opportunity,
because the days are evil.
Therefore do not be foolish,
but understand what
the Lord’s will is.
Ephesians 5:15-17
Because our time on this planet is limited, it compels
us to focus on our priorities. That focus has a practical
look in terms of managing time with family, faith and
finances. In her book Time Management: Maximizing
Your Minutes, june Hunt points to some consequences
of time mismanagement:
Lack of intimacy with the Lord
Lack of quality in personal relationships
Lack of ability to relax
Lack of ability to enjoy quiet and leisure time
Lack of satisfaction in work
Lack of emotional stability
Lack of physical health
Lack of joy and optimism
Lack of a sense of self-worth
In our point Man Trainings, we endeavor to right the
wrongs listed above and empower our men to take
back their lives from the realm of mismanagement and
properly manage all that is dear to them. In the next
quarter’s AdvAnce, part two of this article will offer
positive insights on how to manage our lives in both
personal and spiritual ways.

Each chartered member of your outpost will receive a
free copy of Rangers NOW, the group-specific, annual
magazine from the National Royal Rangers Ministries that
lets boys know how to get the most from their Rangers
experience during the current school year. There is an
edition for leaders, too.
Your outpost will get one free copy of the Outpost
Promotional Kit, which is full of resources like
promotional videos, reproducible touch cards, clip art,
customizable banners to advertise your ministry and/or
decorate your meeting rooms, and more!
Access to download Outpost Navigator, a data-tracking
tool to record and track boys’ and leaders’ advancements.
An official outpost number to wear on your uniform.
As you can see, the benefits of chartering are
huge! The discount on products and events
alone should well exceed the cost of chartering.
September 1 – August 31.
Now is the time to renew your charter. Please
go to the national website, www.royalrangers.com,
Fourth QUARTER 2011 | ADVANCE New Jersey | 15

During 2011, we have
addressed some thorny issues regarding
employment practices for the local church.
We have touched on topics of employment law that
have a significant impact on churches. This quarter, we
will take a look at some of the reporting that is required
of all employers, including churches.
Before you can fill out the proper form to report
earnings and other information to the proper
government agency, you need to properly classify
workers as outside contractors (self-employed) or
employees. The IrS has developed 20 criteria for you
to use in determining if a worker is an employee or
is self-employed. You should use these criteria and
document your decision in case it is challenged. note:
Ministers are considered “dual-status” taxpayers – they
are employees of the church and should be receiving
a W-2 form, but they are considered self-employed
with respect to social security. Form 1099-MISc is
permissible, but not preferred, unless your pastors
meet the 20 criteria test as truly self-employed, which
almost never happens.
church leaders (especially board members) must
take payroll tax reporting rules seriously. The IrS and
state tax departments are not shy about imposing
significant penalties on individuals responsible for
managing the church finances (this includes pastors,
board members and bookkeepers). It is essential for
these individuals to understand and comply with
the rules. penalties can be severe and can be assessed
against all individuals in a “should have known” role in
management of the church.
Tax Update:
For travel beginning July 1, 2011,
the IRS has increased the standard
mileage rate to 55.5 cents per mile.
Charitable travel for this time period
remains at 14 centers per mile.
Taxing authorities are also very well aware of the
sad fact that churches all too often fail to comply with
employment tax withholding and reporting.
There is a simple, 10 step approach to compliance
with payroll tax reporting that is available in richard
Hammar’s 2011 Church and Clergy Tax Guide. We
urge you to purchase this valuable resource so you can
implement his recommendations. doing so will go
a long way toward achieving compliance with these
important tax reporting requirements.
20 criteria to determine worker status can be found at
www.irs.gov. This information is also included in the
2011 Church and Clergy Tax Guide by Richard Hammar.
julid@njag.org - we have many other resources, some
of which were developed by the district attorneys to
assist us with various employment law matters. We also
have an employee manual that we can share with our
local churches.

18 | ADVANCE New Jersey | Fourth QUARTER 2011
Last Sunday I had such a burden for her (Margaret) and finally made it up
to Mendham. She cried out to Jesus, Pastor Nancy. She said she did open
the door of her heart to let Jesus in as her Lord and Savior. This has been
a burden for some time, but the enemy would always seem to distract her
at the point of prayer and receiving her salvation. But, Praise the Lord, she
called on Him. Which leads me to a request: would you show us how to
communicate a message of salvation in sign? Something simple, of course!
It was awesome to see their enthusiasm not only to learn sign language,
but that they are actively reaching others for christ with limited
communication skills. We serve a God of the impossible (Matthew
19:26). May the lord be calling you to what you think is impossible?
