Tomahawk hired a troupe of
professional water skiers to highlight
the local Aqua Days celebration. A
young local water skier named Rod
Greil approached the Tomahawk
Jaycees and told them that he could
put together a water ski show equal
to that of the professional show.
The Jaycees took Greil’s assertion
seriously and agreed to give Greil a
shot at proving his claim.
Greil and Bob Henderson,
together with several friends and
neighbors, choreographed some acts
and despite poor water conditions
and inclement weather put on a
successful show. That effort paved
the way for the formation of the
Kwahamot Water Ski Club and its
crowd-appealing shows today.
Over the next 50 years,
membership in the Kwahamots
has grown to a historical roster of
almost 350, including more than
40 currently active members. Most
of the club’s members originally
hailed from Tomahawk and grew up
watching other T-hawkers perform
on the water. The club is strictly
amateur, and no one receives any
monetary compensation for his/her
services.
With the help of many area
people, projects were finished that
added to the quality of the water
ski show, including a dredged river
bottom, addition of a seating section,
ski jump, T-shaped dock, lighting
system, loud speaker system,
permanent bleachers, lowered beach
grade, retaining walls, sodded show
grounds, parking areas, concessions,
restrooms and a new chalet/
boathouse built in 1993.
Because it is protected from
wind on all sides, Kwahamot Bay
on the Wisconsin River is nationally
known as one of the best “natural
lakes” for water skiing. Testament
to the quality of the Kwahamot
facility is that it was chosen to be
the site for this three-day national
championship tournament, as well
as several state events and Midwest
regional competitions. The local club
also hosted three Wisconsin State
Wakeboard championships, three
Mike Seipel barefoot figure-eight
tournaments and three Kwahamot
All-Star Show Ski tournaments.
This year, of course, marks
The Lake City Skiers have been a
competitive water ski team since 1989
and is the only competitive water ski
team in Indiana. Currently, there are 45
club members of which 25 are water
skiers. The youngest member is eight
years old, while the oldest is 52.
The Shermalot Show Team organized
in 1975 when a group of water ski
enthusiasts banded together to form
the Shermalot Water Ski Show Team,
Inc. The team has skied throughout
Wisconsin and across the nation.
Committed to advocating leadership
to youth through family participation,
the Shermalot Water Ski Show Team
has entertained spectators on lakes
Arrowhead, Camelot and Sherwood for
more than 36 years. The club actively
participates in competitive USA Water
Ski sanctioned events and is proud to
be five-time Division 2 state champions
and ranked among the top-10 amateur
shows in the United States.
The Lauderdale Lakes Aqua Skiers
have provided free family-oriented
entertainment for the Southeastern
Wisconsin Lakes Area for over 50
years. The mission of the non-profit
organization is to provide a venue
for people, young and old alike, and
families to learn aspects of show
skiing as well as develop leadership
and teamwork skills through weekly
practices, exhibition shows, ski
competitions, fundraising events and
community service and activities.
Lauderdale Lakes members range
in age from six to sixty-six. As an active
member of U.S.A. Water Ski and the
Wisconsin Water Ski Federation, the
Lauderdale Aqua Skiers provide a
structured and safe environment for
its members. Its weekly practices
culminate in free exhibitions held
Saturday evenings from Memorial
Day through Labor Day on Lauderdale
Lakes in Don Jean Bay.
The Ski Sprites Water Ski Shows
was founded in 1960 by a group of
six young skiers. These original Ski
Sprites foresaw the need for organized
water skiing in the Chippewa Valley of
western Wisconsin. It wasn’t until 1972
that the Ski Sprites first performed in the
Wisconsin State Ski Tournament. That
first exposure to show ski competition
was quite a learning experience for the
skiers as none of the members had
ever seen a tournament. From that
novice team in 1972, the 1973 team
came back to the state tournament as
the first show ski team to put individual
songs and music to the individual acts
being performed. They came from near
last place in their first year to third place
in 1973. The 2006 season marked the
end of an era for the Ski Sprites as they
said farewell to their home of 46 years,
Half Moon Lake. Beginning in 2007, the
Ski Sprites will be performing on their
new home on Lake Altoona.
The current Ski Sprites team consists
of approximately 100 members
made up of skiers and a host of adult
volunteers. Equipment includes two
Malibu ski boats, two Mercury powered
towboats, two safety boats poised for
immediate water rescue, and two 26foot
pontoon boats used as floating
docks for many of the exciting acts
round out the Ski Sprites fleet.
The Chain Skimmers water ski club
is a non-profit organization, with all
the proceeds go back into producing
a quality ski show. Skimmers skiers
donate their talents and abilities.
now that the 2011 show
be interesting to know
how the various show ski
teams will be judged. First of all,
there will be five different judges
watching every act performed by
every team. secondly, the judges
will score each act according to its
score value between zero and 100
the club was on its way to a 6th place
finish in National Competition. The club
has been noted for its dynamic, original
2 Show Ski Nationals Aug. 5-7.
Show ski teams (14) from the Upper
Midwest will vie for the national
championship during competition
held Saturday and Sunday starting at
8 a.m. each day. Individual skiers and
pairs will compete in trick skiing and
jumping Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
Besides hosting the national
show ski tournament, the Kwahamots
also will be competing in the show
ski nationals for the first time ever.
The locals will perform 13 acts
during their one-hour “show.”
Kwahamot show skiers previously
won Wisconsin state titles in 1969,
1971, 1974 and 2004.
That’s quite an accomplishment
for Wisconsin’s smallest water ski
club. You’ve come a long way, Baby!
