2 Winter 2011 President’s Letter In the spirit of our focus on commitment, I think back on the past year of service as our national president and the many ways in which our membership are “making it count.” As I’ve traveled to circles across the country and met our members, I’ve been humbled by both the scale and the impact of Omicron Delta Kappa. These experiences have given me an even greater appreciation of the far-reaching ways our membership are making their commitments count. This past spring, I was honored to represent the Society at the biennial West Point Global Leadership Conference held on the campus of the United States Military Academy. This particular Conference brings together academic, corporate, non-profit, government and military leaders to engage in dialogue and share perspectives and insights on developing leaders. The title of this year’s conference was Serving, Learning and Leading: Creating and Engaging Leaders in Global Citizenship. A central theme of the conference was the critical need for leadership in all areas of our society. The problems we face today are more complicated than ever before. Change is happening at a faster rate than ever in our history. From enduring poverty, to Commitment Members, environmental concerns, to ongoing global conflicts, the world has become only more complex, and so have the capacities and skills we’ll need in our future leaders. Omicron Delta Kappa plays a vital role in addressing this challenge. For almost one hundred years, our Society has served this country with the noble mission to recognize, develop, and empower the campus leaders of today so that they may become the community leaders of tomorrow. The thousands of student leaders we initiate into the Society each year graduate and do just this, positively impacting the world in far-reaching ways. The timeless ideals of Omicron Delta Kappa are more relevant today than ever: exemplary character, superior scholarship, responsible leadership, and service to others. These great principles are alive not only in the young people we recognize in our 300 circles around the country, but also in the lives of our 300,000 members.
