Kembla Joggers Clubhouse & Cross-Country Park
Now completed, the Kembla Joggers Cross-Country Park is a
purpose built venue catering for cross-country running events
and other fitness activities such as walking and general training.
The venue is a ‘one-of-its-kind’ facility providing a variety of
trails of different lengths complemented by our own fantastic
clubhouse. The Kembla Joggers will be the owner and manager
of the facilities on Wollongong City Council land under a 21
year lease. The club will be able to conduct a number of feature
events at the venue during the year in addition to most junior
events and alternative senior events held at West Dapto. Much
of the use will however come from local schools for their crosscountry
carnivals and it is likely that future state and national
championships will also be held at the venue.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse is a modern, state of the art facility that club
members can be proud of and enjoy for many years to come.
The building includes the Kerryn McCann function room which
can seat up to 100 people at tables. The room opens on to the
large sprawling balcony with magnificent views of the Illawarra
escarpment and our cross country courses.
The room is fully air-conditioned and incorporates in-built
audio-visual equipment and surround sound, making it ideal
for business use or social functions. A fully equipped kitchen,
meeting room, toilets, showers, change rooms, disabled facilities,
garage, canteen and an undercover outdoor entertainment
area also feature. The facility is impressive architecturally,
incorporating brick and Colorbond materials, and utilises ecosmart
and energy saving features. The clubhouse is available
for hire to the public, local businesses and club members at a
discounted rate. To make a booking down load the booking
form and conditions from the KJ website or ring booking officer
Janet Barnett on 4271 3299 for any enquiries.
Funding & Future Running Costs
The clubhouse and cross-country courses upgrades were fully
funded thanks to federal government Jobs Fund stimulus funding
($1.2M), the State government ($200K) and Wollongong City
Council ($100K), our own fundraising reserves ($130K) and
in-kind support ($30K), ie a total of almost $1.7 million. The
club does not owe a cent on the project nor was it required
to contribute any money from normal club operating funds.
Running costs are fully funded by fundraising efforts associated
with the Fitness 5 Funrun, Trivia Night & Raffle, Wests Illawarra
sponsorship and facility hire fees.
Management Team
The Clubhouse & Cross-Country Park Management Team
includes Peter Issa, Eric Brown (Course Maintenance
Supervisor), Janet Barnett (Booking Officer), Done Martinoski,
Neil Barnett, John Burns, Jim Hennessy, Roy Francis, Dave
Higgins, John Mintoff and Dave Barnett. Feel free to contact any
of the above if you would like to know more or to volunteer to
assist in any aspect of the maintenance of the facilities.
Adopt a Garden Program
The club has a program in place which allows members and
their families to ‘adopt’ one of the 33 garden beds which line
our cross-country trails. The task is otherwise too massive for
club officials. By ‘adopting’ a garden you will take responsibility
for it’s maintenance including weeding, pruning and replacing
any plants which may die. These tasks can be performed at
your convenience and at any time that suits you, so you are not
committed to a regular day or time. You will be able to decide
the frequency of your visits, which will obviously depend on
the time of the year, and shouldn’t involve any more than a few
hours of your time in a fortnight or month. Costs associated with
maintenance, such as weed killer, tools, or new plants will be
reimbursed fully by the club. The club will place all volunteers in
the draw for some great random prizes during the year.
