And List of Donors<br />
Dear Friends,<br />
<strong>2011</strong> was another good year for <strong>Village</strong> children and<br />
families. For this, we have many of you <strong>to</strong> thank.<br />
We have grown from an annual budget of $3.1 million<br />
in 2002 <strong>to</strong> $12.3 million in FY 2012.<br />
This remarkable growth is due <strong>to</strong> Alpine Academy,<br />
<strong>our</strong> therapeutic boarding school for teenage girls,<br />
consistent support from the community and sustained<br />
funding from <strong>our</strong> State Legisla<strong>to</strong>rs who have kept<br />
funding for children at a humane and responsible<br />
level.<br />
Our group homes for abused, neglected and troubled children and teens – the Kearns Homes for Boys, Raymond<br />
Home for Boys, Beverley Sorenson Home for Little Boys and the Little Girls Homes – continued <strong>to</strong> be full and <strong>to</strong><br />
change many lives.<br />
Our Treatment Foster Homes – individual foster homes located throughout the state – remained stable in <strong>2011</strong> with<br />
50 families opening their homes and hearts <strong>to</strong> youth who need structure, nurturing and normalcy <strong>to</strong> learn a better<br />
way <strong>to</strong> live.<br />
Included in these numbers are the families who are taking in refugee children from war-<strong>to</strong>rn countries throughout<br />
the globe. These children come <strong>to</strong> the United States through Catholic Community Services and the United Nations<br />
High Commission for Refugees. Thanks <strong>to</strong> caring <strong>Village</strong> foster parents, they are succeeding in school, learning<br />
English, recovering from years of neglect and trauma and becoming whole and happy members of <strong>our</strong> community.<br />
Our newest program, <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Village</strong> Academy, provides middle school and high school education for <strong>our</strong> youth,<br />
and youth in other residential programs, who are struggling in public schools. These students have the benefit of<br />
a continuous therapeutic environment w<strong>here</strong> their behavioral issues can be addressed throughout the day. As their<br />
behaviors normalize, they can return <strong>to</strong> public school.<br />
In <strong>2011</strong>, we served 300 families with Families First, <strong>our</strong> in-home intensive parenting skills program for families with<br />
troubled child(ren).<br />
Alpine Academy, continues <strong>to</strong> provide a home-like therapeutic environment in which teenage girls from all over<br />
the country learn skills for a successful life. In <strong>2011</strong> we began construction on the Thompson Arts & Recreation<br />
Building, which will be the ninth building on <strong>our</strong> 27-acre campus.<br />
At <strong>our</strong> <strong>2011</strong> Helping Hand Gala, Dave Petersen, President & CEO of O.C. Tanner Company, helped us honor<br />
business leader and <strong>Utah</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Village</strong> Board Member, Harris Simmons, President & CEO of Zions Bancorporation.<br />
We’re much endebted <strong>to</strong> Dave and Harris and their many friends and admirers for a truly inspiring evening.<br />
In <strong>2011</strong>, we continued with <strong>our</strong> new Lila Award Breakfast, which replaced <strong>our</strong> long-running Fashion Show and<br />
Luncheon. At <strong>our</strong> breakfast, 20 <strong>Village</strong> youth received the Lila Award for achievement. Three youth and a Families<br />
First family received the Gold Lila Award. The Gold Award Recipients had been severely abused and neglected at an<br />
early age. They have risen above these early misfortunes and are now happy, functioning children.<br />
Even with the slow pace of economic recovery, <strong>Utah</strong> <strong>Youth</strong> <strong>Village</strong> remains strong because of y<strong>our</strong> commitment<br />
<strong>to</strong> the children we serve. We are weathering this s<strong>to</strong>rm and continue <strong>to</strong> help children due, in large measure, <strong>to</strong><br />
the generosity of the donors listed in this <strong>Report</strong>. Thank you. Together, we have reached out <strong>to</strong> the lift the lives of<br />
children.<br />
