RESURRECTION LUTHERAN CHURCH
Make your shadow like night—at high noon. Hide the fugitives, do not betray the refugees.
Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you; be their shelter from the destroyer.
Isaiah 16:3-4a
Among the seasonal songs that saturate December is the earnest ballad announcing that I’ll Be Home for Christmas. This is
not a given, and not every person or family can manage it.
Meet Joe and Mary. Imperial edict has decreed a census in which everyone must be counted in their place of origin, so those
living elsewhere must up and go regardless of whatever else they have planned. Political decisions often have profound,
disruptive impacts on people’s lives; if you don’t believe me, ask a family whose daughter or son will be spending this
Christmas in Afghanistan. For Mary and Joe, a young couple expecting their first child, it means a trip to backwater
Bethlehem while she is nine months pregnant. They are too poor to afford a sport utility donkey, so she’ll have to bounce
along on the old beater the entire way.
When at last they arrive, the contractions are only a few minutes apart and the doors keep closing. There is no welcome
among family, and there is no vacancy at the Comfort Inn or the Mary-ought. There are no hospitals or maternity wards in
this sad excuse for a town, so they end up in a cattle stall—basically, an ancient world garage that looks and smells like a
barn—where young Mary gives birth to her first child, beds him down in a trough, and then works with Joe to make sure the
animals don’t try to eat him.
This baby is so special, and this story is so familiar, that is quite possible that we miss both the terror in the ordeal and the
fact that this story is not so unique at all. A haunting exhibit now at St. Francis Retreat Center in Dewitt, Michigan chronicles
in art and text the separation and struggle of another Jewish family during the Holocaust. Anne Roberts told me the story of a
relative having to rescue a very pregnant woman who does not own a car from New York City days before Hurricane Sandy
hit; she was able to get out and find a place a bit more sanitary than Mary did to deliver her baby. Others are not so fortunate,
particularly those who are fleeing war or oppression or persecution in various places around the globe. Maybe they are in a
place where being a follower of Joe and Mary’s child is against the law. Political decisions often have profound, disruptive
impacts on people’s lives.
This is why Lutherans in Chicago have long worked to welcome refugees, to find room for them in the inn. We at
Resurrection were part of the sanctuary movement in the 1980s for those forced to flee El Salvador. Since 1939, Lutheran
Immigration and Refugee Services has been actively placing displaced families in new homes and supporting them in the
long, bumpy ride toward a new life. Now we have an opportunity to do the same work locally with RefugeeOne.
Together with other congregations of our Metropolitan Chicago Synod, we at Resurrection will work to support the
resettlement ministry of RefugeeOne in the coming year. Our children are already leading the way, dedicating this year’s
Sunday School offerings to RefugeeOne. We also hope to sponsor a family in early 2013. To that end, Nora Brathol has
submitted a grant application to our Mission Endowment Fund and worked with Sonja Burseth, Chris Helland, and Nathaniel
Viets-VanLear to plan the Welcoming Isaiah 16 project being launched this month. You can read more specifics on page 3.
Let’s be someone’s home for Christmas. Let’s provide shelter from the destroyer. Let’s make room in the inn. It may just be
that we find ourselves welcoming Jesus.

MISSION STATEMENT
Resurrection Lutheran Church invites and welcomes
all people to hear God's word, share our faith, and
celebrate the sacraments. Through music, liturgy, and
fellowship, we embrace diversity, nurture children,
advocate justice, and praise God. This is our response
to the Gospel.
COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
November 14, 2012
* We are exploring the cost of paraments with Alma’s
bequest. We will be pricing Advent paraments first, and
possibly Lenten paraments as well. We will also assess
needs in the kitchen. Thanks to all for your suggestions!
Council will bring a proposal to the 2013 annual meeting.
* We have also been gifted by memorials for Donna
Johnson and council is currently deliberating the use of
these gifts as well. Feel free to offer suggestions to Pastor
Brian or to any council member.
* Chris Letkewicz and the finance committee have begun
the budgeting process for next year. We discussed
preliminary numbers at the November meeting and will
spend most of the meeting in December on the budget
proposal to bring to the annual meeting in January.
* We continued our discussion of the RAP program. JCYS
and Concordia have also noted declining enrollment;
Concordia has closed their after-school program. We have
committed to continuing the RAP program through mid-
April unless there is a significant decline in enrollment
prior to that time (concurrent with open enrollment in the
Right at School program at Hawthorne). Executive
committee and finance committee are continuing to work
with Debbie Mytych through this process.
The next council meeting will be December 13 at 7pm.
Welcoming Isaiah 16:
Answering God’s Call to Welcome Refugees
In partnership with other congregations in our synod,
Lutheran Refugee and Immigration Services, and
RefugeeOne, RLC is starting a new outreach ministry to
refugee families in our community, with the goal of
sponsoring two refugee families in 2013. This will be
kicked off in December of 2012 with a collection drive to
provide basic apartment items like toiletries and bedding
(see the list below). Most refugees arrive with little but the
clothes on their backs and need everything from paper
stamps to light bulbs. CTA cards, retail gift cards, and
especially cash donations are also welcomed (gift cards
can be used as educational tools on how to navigate the
CTA, identify sale items at the store, or to purchase items
needed by the family that were not donated). Donations
can be brought to Resurrection and placed in the
collection box in front of the altar throughout Advent.
If you have any questions, ideas, or would like to donate
larger items like furniture, please email
rlcrefugeeministry@gmail.com. Thank you for helping
provide a safe and furnished home for refugees this
Christmas!
Needed Items Include:
toothpaste and toothbrushes
feminine hygiene products
soap, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant
diapers and wipes
kitchen sponges, dish towels, dish soap
Kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper
bath and hand towels
garbage cans and bags (kitchen 13 gal and bathroom)
twin and full size sheet sets
comforters and throw blankets
cleaning supplies (mop/bucket, broom, all purpose
cleaners)
stamps
tape, notebooks, pens and pencils
WHEN YOU WISH UPON A BLUE SHEET…
Do you remember the blue inserts in our bulletins this
summer that gave us the opportunity to share what “I
wish we did…” and what “I wish we had…”? Council
lists. Now we want your involvement in helping us move
from “I wish…” to “We’re going to…” Please join us for
breakfast and conversation between services at 9:40am
on Sunday, December 16 th . We’ll look at all the
suggestions from our fellow worshipers and develop our
priority list for programs, activities and items. Your input
and appetite are expected! If you cannot join us that day,
but have additional thoughts that you didn’t have a
chance to share on the blue sheets, please contact Kathy
Resurrection is invited to
The Art Institute of Chicago!
Christina Nielsen invites fellow
RLC members for a special, one time
only tour of the Art Institute’s new
exhibition, Late Roman and Early Byzantine Treasures from the
British Museum. The artworks on loan from London reflect
the splendor of wealthy households and important
ecclesiastical sites in Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria,
and Antioch between 350-700 A.D. They were produced
during a time of great structural shifts in the later Roman
Empire, as Constantinople replaced Rome as the imperial
capital and as Christianity became the official imperial
religion. While the objects themselves were employed in a
variety of civic, domestic, and sacred contexts, they
nevertheless allow for an exploration of the ways in which
classical subjects both co-existed and competed with
early Christian iconography.
The tour will take place on Thursday, January 24 at
6pm. Because space is limited, the first fifteen people to
email Christina at cnielsen1@artic.edu will be guaranteed
a place on the tour. Please note: museum admission is $18
per person.
• Overall, we are in really good shape budget wise. We
are now ahead for year in offerings, which is great news
after being behind all year.
• Expenses are well below budget for a couple of reasons.
First, SummerFest made a profit instead of the net
expense we budgeted for. Second, expenses for supplies,
utilities and instrument repair are well below budget.
LITTLE DRESSES FOR LITTLE GIRLS
If you or others you know might be traveling to areas
where orphanages need help, we can give you little
girl’s sun dresses to deliver (12 dresses take up less
than half of a small suitcase). So far, over 125
dresses from RLC sewers have been delivered to
Rwanda, Peru, and El Salvador. Look for the some of
the dresses to be modeled soon as we celebrate our
own blessings and forever families during the
holidays. Girls who have clean clothes can go to
school, are more likely to marry later, earn more
money and have children that stay in school longer.
Make Your House Fair as You Are Able…
The words in a favorite Advent hymn are good advice for all
of us at Resurrection. Our campus gets a lot of traffic
throughout the week, with many different groups using our
space, pedestrians walking by, and litter riding the wind
before settling into our yard. Since we cut cleaning services
to save money, it is often too much for Maurice (or any one
person) to keep up with…especially when he is on vacation!
You can help. If you see trash, pick it up. If you see
something amiss, fix it, and if you don’t know how, please
notify the office. (Pastor is especially prone to overlook
things he sees every day.) Remember that Resurrection is not
only God’s house, it’s also yours…so make your house fair
as you are able! Thank you for your help.
