The first Promise Scholar recipients were announced in 2005, Tim Muth and Melinda Smith. The two will be graduating in June from
Port Angeles High School. Smith will attend the University of Washington beginning in September, and Muth has decided to join
the U.S. Navy. Gladys Christopher Pollanz graduated from Port Angeles’ Roosevelt High School in 1923 as salutatorian of her class.
The untimely death of her father necessitated that Gladys work as a legal secretary to help support the family rather than attend
college. She worked hard through the years, investing in the stock market wisely. When she died in March 2003, Gladys left one
million dollars to establish a scholarship fund for high school graduates to attend college. The Promise Scholarship award is
unusual in that it is awarded to eighth graders. The goal of this program is to help students focus early on being successful high
school students, while knowing in advance that they have an opportunity to attend college. Caption: Promise Scholar recipients
