message from the premier and minister for the arts
each year the tasmanian craft Fair showcases the
talent, dedication and artistic flair of tasmania’s
artists and craftspeople, as well as displays from
Australian and international exhibitors.
this wonderful event, now in its 31st year,
continues to promote some of the most exquisite
art and craft created by some of our most
skilled and talented craftspeople. this event also
acknowledges the significant role that artists and
craftspeople play in the economic and cultural
prosperity and diversity of our state.
the tasmanian craft Fair is the largest working
craft fair in Australia featuring artists and
craftspeople both selling their wares and
conducting demonstrations. I encourage all
tasmanians to visit the Fair and admire the
creativity and innovation on show in Deloraine.
I congratulate the Rotary club of Deloraine for
their outstanding efforts in growing this event from
strength to strength and I am proud to support this
year’s event.
and the ideology of protective enclosures in a celtic
the strength and power of forged steel and
the beauty and elegance of artistic expression
are a unique combination brought together by
blacksmith Pete Mattila.
Born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the
Us, it was in his teenage years that Pete began
to experience the world of industrial expression.
“I travelled a lot as a teenager – in those days
riding freight trains through almost every state
in the Us, working in all sorts of industries,” he
said.
It was during this time that he met Ani, a
tasmanian who later became his wife, and
they moved back to her parents’ land in Jackeys
Marsh, just south of Deloraine in northern
tasmania.
“In 2004 I started a course in heavy metal
fabrication, and really liked working with metal
as it has a mysterious quality of how it moves
under heat and pressure,” Pete said.
“While on another trip back to the Us I met a
lot of blacksmiths, and became inspired by their
work.
“My passion has been pulled out of something
industrial, but now with an artistic reflection.”
Pete was in the Us for six months from May to
october this year, doing research and spending
some time as an Artist in Residence at Redstar
Ironworks in Pittsburgh.
He has now returned to tasmania to feature as
tasmania is renowned for its furniture creators and
the beautiful local timbers they use.
this year the tasmanian craft Fair showcases
these two aspects in our annual flagship exhibition
through the work of 13 respected craftspeople;
each has been invited to display a piece of
furniture.
the work of tasmanian furniture designers and
makers has an increasing international profile and
is in demand, so we take pleasure in giving craft
Fair visitors the opportunity to meet these artisans
and discuss their work with them. the tasmanian
contemporary Furniture Design exhibition will be
held in the community complex (Venue 5).
the tasmanian craft Fair has an ongoing
commitment to presenting excellence and
innovation in all forms of craft and design. I hope
you will enjoy this sample of the expertise for
which tasmania is rightly acclaimed.
the highly regarded Hoffman challenge quilting exhibition
from new Zealand will also be a feature of the tasmanian
craft Fair.
the annual new Zealand Hoffman challenge is one of
new Zealand’s main quilt competitions. the competition is
currently organised by Betty twaddle of needle ‘n thread,
Geraldine, in conjunction with tiffanies treasures, who are
the distributors of Hoffman Fabrics in new Zealand.
Why is it named the Hoffman challenge? the challenge
Fabric is always chosen from their latest Hoffman range.
entrants must have a recognisable amount of the challenge
Fabric within their quilt. Hoffman’s are a manufacturer of fine
100% cotton fabric in the United states, where the Hoffman
challenge originates. their fabric is renowned for its quality
and beauty.
each year, following judging, the section winners, along
with a selection of the best quilts chosen by the judges, are
put together to travel around new Zealand. Known as the
Hoffman exhibition the quilts are displayed at Quilt shows
and in stores.
Bengeo Retreat will bring the new Zealand Hoffman
challenge exhibition to Australia once again, to be
exhibited at the tasmanian craft Fair.
director’s message
visiting artist
on behalf of the tasmanian craft Fair committee and
the Rotary club of Deloraine, I would like to warmly
welcome you to the 2011 tasmanian craft Fair, our 31st
anniversary. this is the final year of my involvement as
Director of the craft Fair, and I would like to thank you all
for your support during the past three years.
During my time as Director, I have aimed to take the craft
Fair to a new level, while maintaining the history and
origins of the craft Fair. It is an event where the finest arts
and craftspeople not only display and sell their wares, but
offer patrons an insight into how their craft is performed.
We have almost 250 stallholders this year, and have
included an entirely new venue, the main street of
Deloraine, which features the Windows on Deloraine
project.
this year we also have one major exhibition, tasmanian
contemporary Furniture Design, as well as the inaugural
Rotary Hoffman challenge.
other highlights include the Gourmet Festival at Venue
5 to compliment the Gourmet Pantry, and our Visiting
Artist Anaïs Pitalier from France, who will be holding
demonstrations at tony smibert’s gallery (Venue 6). our
heartfelt thanks to tony for his support of this year’s event.
this year’s official opening will be held at McLachlan
studio (Venue 10) with the generous support of our hosts
Mary and Hugh McLachlan.
the annual stallholder Awards will be presented on saturday,
november 5, at the community complex (Venue 5).
AnAïs PItALIeR
French artist Anaïs Pitalier is an
expert in authentic reproductions of
historically important artworks from
the masters such as Da Vinci and
Duccio. she studied the restoration
of paintings in Florence, Italy, and
also restores wood sculptures and
gold frames.
“I studied european techniques,
mostly Italian/ French middle ages,
with egg tempera, natural pigments
(stones, precious stones, plants, etc)
and real gold leaf as the technique
was in this time,” Anaïs said.
“the main goal in restoration is
to give back to artworks their first
objective (religious or historic, for
example) and allow them to pass
through time.”
During the tasmanian craft Fair,
Anaïs will be working with wellknown
tasmanian artist tony smibert,
who has his own gallery just outside
Deloraine (Venue 6). tony is a visiting
artist researcher at tate Gallery in
London on the techniques of JMW
turner, painting reconstructions
of turner’s works for the gallery’s
conservation department.
tony and Anaïs will be
demonstrating their techniques
during the craft Fair, as well as
tutoring one or two tasmanian artists
during the event. there will also be
some examples of Anaïs and tony’s
historic reconstructions for sale, as
well as an exhibition of their works.
I would like to welcome
all new stallholders to
the tasmanian craft Fair
for 2011, including our
emerging Artist Pete Mattila,
a blacksmith who creates the
most spectacular artworks out
of forged steel.
I would like to make
special mention and thanks
to the tasmanian craft
Fair committee and their
associates, as well as the
many service clubs and
community organisations whose untiring work is integral in
making the tasmanian craft Fair a success.
All funds raised through the craft Fair go straight back into
the community via Rotary projects, so keep an eye on the
website www.tascraftfair.com.au throughout the year for
updates on where the money is being distributed from 2011.
enjoy!
