record numbers of donors
Motivated by the one-to-one match offered by the Steans Challenge
for Scholarships, record numbers of new donors were making gifts to
scholarships by the end of the fiscal year, and the university expects
to see more records surpassed in the coming year.
Record-breaking fundraising during FY2010 demonstrated a
strong commitment among DePaul trustees, alumni, friends, faculty
and staff to the Campaign’s success and was especially remarkable in
a challenging economic climate.
Leadership gifts helped to set the record-breaking pace. Trustee
Gerald Beeson (COM ’94) and his wife Jennifer funded new and
existing scholarships across the university. Trustee George Ruff
(COM ’74) made a $500,000 gift for scholarships in the newly
established School for Hospitality Leadership. Trustee Jim Jenness
(COM ’69, MBA ’71, DHL ’06) and his wife Sharon made a major
commitment to endow scholarships in the marketing program in the
College of Commerce. University Trustee Sondra Healy (GSD ’64) and
her husband Denis made a landmark gift to help fund the construction
of state-of-the-art facilities for The Theatre School.
The next level of excellence for dePaul
In May 2010, DePaul students, faculty, staff, donors, alumni and
trustees came together at the Lincoln Park campus. They came from
around the country and around the world to celebrate not just the
Campaign, but the spirit of DePaul, its legacy of providing excellence
and opportunity, and a collective determination to enhance and
extend its mission. In the 350th anniversary year of the death of St.
Vincent de Paul, they celebrated how St. Vincent’s enduring model of
service has come to touch so many lives and so many communities.
The Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign focuses on scholarship
support and academic excellence, driven by DePaul’s Vision twenty12
Strategic Plan. A particular investment focus is student financial aid;
$100 million will significantly bolster DePaul’s founding commitment
to providing a high-quality education to all talented students who
seek it, regardless of their economic circumstances (see page 6).
Direct investment in academic excellence totaling $112 million through
the Campaign will further solidify DePaul’s ability to attract top
faculty and provide the resources they need to continue to create
and strengthen world-class academic programs (see page 8). And
the Campaign will provide $38 million in capital funds to construct
leading-edge education and performances spaces for the School of
Music and The Theatre School, whose world-renowned conservatory
programs will, thanks to the generosity of campaign donors, soon
have facilities commensurate with their scholastic excellence (see
page 10).
The enduring model of st. vincent de Paul
This report is a review of gifts made between July 1, 2009, and June 30,
2010; gifts whose impact will resound well into the future — on campus
and into lives and communities around the world. Gifts from thousands
of donors will support students, attract and retain top faculty, create
innovative programming, and build world-class educational facilities that
will extend DePaul’s leading academic reputation.
The work of DePaul University cannot achieve the next level of
excellence without the ongoing support of benefactors who provide
new and significant funding. A firm yet flexible foundation of resources
assures that DePaul’s teaching and socially based research and service
continues to benefit the world beyond campus. DePaul’s remarkable
record of success, as measured by the achievements of its students
and alumni and by the contributions of its faculty and programs to
civic life, owes much to the individuals and organizations who support
the goals and work of the university. The Campaign’s early progress is
a testament to the determination and strength of DePaul supporters.
The ambitious goals of the Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign
represent just how much stronger DePaul can be.
future generations of dreams
A capital campaign of this magnitude marks DePaul’s maturation as
one of the leading private universities in the nation. The Campaign’s
overall goal is ambitious, but its essential role in advancing the
university has been carefully considered. Discussion across the
university has derived specific campaign objectives focused on
raising the institution’s level of academic excellence and solidifying
gains in scale, quality and reputation of the past quarter-century,
while maintaining its historical commitment to students from diverse
economic and ethnic backgrounds.
St. Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of charity, created an enduring
model of volunteerism and philanthropy that remains alive in the
generosity of DePaul supporters. That model, as exemplified in
DePaul University, has blossomed into a worldwide enterprise that
continues to change lives and shape societies for the better. DePaul
meets the challenges of the 21st century with the capacity to meet
the needs of more students, more communities and more cultures
than ever. The gifts we recognize this year ensure that DePaul’s
distinctive mission will endure for generations.
