Membership
The Society for Neuroscience is the largest professional society
dedicated to the study of the nervous system, with more than
42,000 members from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and
80 other countries.
Society Mission
To advance the understanding of the brain and nervous system
by bringing together scientists of diverse backgrounds, by
facilitating the integration of research directed at all levels
of biological organization, and by encouraging translational
research and the application of new scientific knowledge to
develop improved disease treatment and cures; to provide
professional development activities, information, and
educational resources for neuroscientists at all stages of their
careers and increase participation of scientists from a diversity of
cultural and ethnic backgrounds; to promote public information
and general education about the nature of scientific discovery
and the results and implications of the latest neuroscience
research; and to inform legislators and other policymakers
about new scientific knowledge and recent developments in
neuroscience research and their implications for public policy,
societal benefit, and continued scientific progress.
Membership Categories
• RegulaR — Any person who has done research relating
to the neurosciences is eligible for regular membership.
Applications shall follow procedures defined by Council.
• RegulaR Postdoc — Any person who has obtained
their doctoral degree and is currently working in a
postdoctoral trainee program.
• student * — Students enrolled in programs at degreegranting
institutions of higher education are eligible to
apply for student membership. Student membership shall
terminate at the end of the first membership year in which
the student is able to apply for another class of membership
after completing or otherwise leaving the degree granting
program. Former student members shall be eligible for
election to another class of membership according to the
same procedures and criteria as other scientific workers.
• affIlIate — All persons interested in the Society’s
objectives but not eligible for regular or student membership
may be appointed to affiliate membership. Categories of
affiliate membership shall be as defined in the Resolutions
to Bylaws.
note: Affiliate members are NOT entitled to submit
abstracts for the annual meeting.

Year 2012 Reduced Dues Country List
In an effort to support neuroscientists and students residing in resource-restricted areas of the world and to encourage international
participation in the Society and its programs, the Society for Neuroscience is pleased to offer reduced membership dues to residents
of the countries listed below. The countries are divided into three categories using the World Bank’s categorization of countries by
income level. SfN’s Reduced Dues Category I corresponds to the World Bank’s category of “low-income economies” (having a gross
national income (GNI) per capita of $1,005 or less). SfN’s Reduced Dues Category II includes countries in the World Bank’s categories
of “lower-middle-income economy” (having a GNI per capita of $1,006-$3,975) SfN’s Reduced Dues Category III includes countries
in the World Bank’s categories of “upper-middle-income economy” (having a GNI per capita of $3,976-$12,275). These lists are
updated annually by the World Bank and SfN makes adjustments as needed. Reductions and categories are based on an individual
member’s work and residence address. Members working and/or residing outside these geographical locations will be required to pay full
membership dues.
