Issue<br />
everything leaks, even gaskets! It is the rate of this leak which is critical.<br />
The lower the leak, the less the financial loss from escaping product<br />
and less the environmental impact.<br />
An erIKS Gasket Technology customer, an ethylene plant, estimated it had<br />
50,000 joints, each having a gasket in place. Although the existing gasket<br />
specification was fit for purpose, erIKS engineers calculated that if a better<br />
gasket design was employed, significant improvements could be made.<br />
Solution<br />
erIKS engineers recommended the modification of the existing gasket<br />
specification to one in accordance with German ta-luft specification.<br />
The ta-luft specification has very stringent criteria on leakage rate and<br />
is the basis of erIKS Gasket Sustainability criteria. erIKS recommended<br />
the selection of frenzelit specialist SSTc ta-luft reinforced graphite material.<br />
With a proven leak rate of only 0.00008 mbar.l/s.m, it is estimated that<br />
ethylene product loss will be reduced by 50 tonnes per year.<br />

erIKS Gasket Technology core competence centre offers a full<br />
technical advisory service in addition to a comprehensive cutting<br />
service. Both cnc waterjet cutting and cnc oscillating knife cutting<br />
techniques offer unprecedented product accuracy, whilst the use of the latest radan<br />
‘nesting’ software ensures maximum material utilisation practices are employed. A local<br />

rX PT30 is a high quality, private brand<br />
sheet jointing comprising of a mixture of<br />
polyaramid and inorganic fibres, bonded<br />
with a nBr binder. It is a general purpose<br />
gasket material, suitable for hot and cold<br />
water, steam, oil, fuel, gases and other<br />
general duties. colour: Orange.<br />
RX PT50<br />
rX PT50 is an alternative private brand<br />
aramid based sheet jointing. Again<br />
it is suitable for general purpose low<br />
temperature applications, including water,<br />
steam, oil, fuel gases and other general<br />

composite rX PT150 and rX PT160 are a PTfe based<br />
group of products capable of sealing chemicals right across<br />

and at pressures from 85 bar down to vacuum. Typified by<br />
low creep, sustained service capability and robustness and<br />
has numerous advantages over many alternatives including<br />
pure and filled PTfe and envelope gaskets.<br />
RX PT150<br />
Blue Modified PTfe sheeting. High<br />
performance biaxially orientated sheet<br />
sealing material containing PTfe with<br />
hollow glass micro spheres. excellent<br />
resistant against cold-creep and very gas<br />
tight. <strong>Seal</strong>s with low bolt force. Universal<br />
chemical resistance and can be used for<br />
several flange materials: steel, plastic, glass<br />
and ceramic lined. Temperature from<br />

RX PT160<br />

Graphite laminates<br />
A semi-rigid laminated material manufactured from high<br />
purity exfoliated graphite reinforced with nickel or stainless<br />
foil or tanged stainless steel. It is suitable for sealing against<br />
steam and most other media with the exception of strongly<br />
oxidising reagents. recommended for use at 350ºc and for<br />
pressures up to 2900psi. General material grades available<br />
from erIKS Gasket Technology include:<br />
RX Egraflex Tanged Graphite<br />
rX egraflex is a graphite laminate<br />
sheeting reinforced with a 316 stainless<br />
steel insert. A universal material for (petro)<br />
chemicals. Used in high pressure and<br />
high temperature applications. Available<br />
in 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm thicknesses.<br />
rX egraflex Tanged Graphite is a<br />
graphite laminate reinforced with a tanged stainless steel<br />
core. recommended for applications involving high sealing<br />
stresses and where high blowout resistance is required.<br />
The inclusion of the steel reinforcing layer gives rise to a<br />
robust sheet. can be used to seal a wide range of media,<br />
with the exception of strong oxidising agents, at extremes of<br />
temperature and pressure.<br />

Flexitallic Thermiculite ®<br />
Thermiculite ® 815 is a high temperature<br />
sheet sealing material comprising chemically<br />

temperature sealing applications. Maximum<br />
recommended temperature: 800ºc<br />
(1470ºf). Maximum recommended pressure:<br />

Frenzelit NovaMicA ® THERMEX<br />
novaMIcA ® THerMeX is the brandnew<br />
gasket material with extremely high<br />
temperature stability. It is based on<br />
processed phlogopite mica resistant<br />
to continuous temperatures of up to<br />
1000ºc. Suitable for extreme thermal<br />
and mechanical applications, especially exhaust.<br />
Novus Hi-Temp<br />
A mica/silicone based high temperature<br />
sealing material. for use as sealing material<br />
between flanges, can be in the form of<br />
sheets or cut gaskets. Application exhaust<br />
pipes, gas turbines, up to 1000ºc.<br />
Spiral wound Gaskets<br />
A comprehensive stock of SWG<br />
manufactured in accordance with ASMe<br />
B16.20 is available for immediate delivery.<br />
Spiral wound gaskets are used for high<br />
pressure and temperature applications.<br />

The camprofile offers a safe, effective seal under the<br />

flexibility and recovery characteristics, allowing seal integrity<br />
under pressure and temperature fluctuations, temperature<br />
differential across the flange face, flange rotation, bolt stress<br />
