First Grade vs Gold Coast at Grammar.
Teecy here, I’ve decided to
take over the reins and add
some artistic flair and intellectual
wit to what has been a
substandard and quite frankly
embarrassing newsletter.
I don’t think Benny Laughlin
or whoever has been writing
the first grade report could
articulate the movements of a
dead person. I turned up to
Brisbane Grammer and of
course Simmo asked me what
I would do if I was captain. I
said “Captain Nowhere” and
he said, “Nah, skipper of this
team you idiot”, I reckon he
is the idiot. I told Simmo to
call heads and of course he
called tails and they won the
toss and batted. I knew from
the start that Nunz and
Benny wouldn’t have much
influence and that I’d be required
to win us the game. I
coached Simmo through his
spell and without my advice
he wouldn’t have picked up a
couple of lucky poles. I eventually
got a bowl after Simmo
had clearly over bowled himself.
I ended up bowling really
well, took 2fa and was
unlucky not to grab more
wickets but Simmo bowled
himself way too much before
I came on. I think he ended
up with a fluky 5fa, talk about
being blessed!!
I told Simmo and Dagga to
watch Scott Brant’s inswinger
and leg cutter as his taking
early poles was the key to
defending their low total of
170. I knew they wouldn’t
last and both fell to Brant
early as did Justin Poole
who should probably drop
down a batting position
behind me.
I came in next and easily
kept Brant out only to get
an absolute Jaffa of an
inswinging leg-cutter from
some bloke at the other end
and was given out caught
behind even though I deliberately
played inside it. I
watched Captain Nowhere
Nicho and Bobby Flynn
carry us through to the second
week only to play terrible
shots to get out.
I watched some bloke called
Doran who they tell me is a
leggie take 3 quick ones. I
heard he has my spot in the
state squad and I’m sure
when people realize that the
only seam he should be
spinning is in a sewing class
that I will claim what is
rightfully mine.
I predicted the rain would
come and wash us out as I
dabble in meteorology and I
was right with the game
ending in a draw.
Obviously the highlight of the shortened round was Alex Wood’s 9/36 in Third grade. This is the best ever return in third grade surpassing
Brett Constable’s 9/40 v University in February 1986. It is the best bowling performance in 10 seasons and the fourth best in the Club’s history.
Woods adds this performance to his Under 18’s 8/53 v Redlands in September 2003.and 7/50 v University in November 2004.
Wynnum Manly History by Charlie. Page 3
As I have had a bit of spare time recently I decided to find Wynnum’s highest innings total which was in the semi final of 1980-81.
Wynnum finished on top of the premiership table and played fourth placed South Brisbane which included the Australian captain
Greg Chappell. After resuming at 2 for 309 Wynnum batted through the second day to post 8 for 656. The Courier Mail report labelled
the innings “the height of absurdity”. However, under the regulations they needed only a draw to progress to the final where
they then defeated Western Suburbs to win their initial first grade premiership and the first of three consecutive wins. The win was
part of eight finals appearances under Captain coach John Bell from 1977 to1984. This innings is the only occasion where three batsmen
have scored centuries. There were also four fifties scored. Of the top seven batsmen, only Greg Ritchie, then a current Shield
player, failed to score 50. Opener Peter Monaghan scored 104 which was the first of his four semi final centuries. Note Wayne Broad
played in the highest two first grade innings and the highest second grade innings.
Volume 7, Issue 4 – Round
Recollections by Sword.
As we all can see the dressing
room complexes are well and
truly on the way. Completion
is expected by Christmas.
This new chapter in the history
of the Wynnum Manly
Cricket club got me reflecting
on the past and what the club,
over the years, has used for
clubrooms.
When I first joined the club,
then known as Balmoral Wynnum,
some 37 years ago I
rolled up to Bulimba Park
where we had 2 concrete practice
wickets and a couple of
dodgy turf practice wickets, we
had no lights and no dressing
rooms.
We played our lower gradegames
at Bulimba and 1’s &
2’s at Wynnum Memorial
Park which had 2 very small
dressing rooms and a basic
canteen facility. In the mid
70’s we started to practice at
the Clem Jones centre at Carina.
In 1976, then known as
Wynnum Manly, we officially
moved to Carina, which had
reasonable turf practice wickets,
no lights, a 2 dressing
room complex and the proverbial
canteen and can bar.
In the early 80’s the club
made, at the time, a controversial
decision to up root again
and develop grounds at
Boundary Street, which was
initially a large farm. It was
controversial because everyone
believed we had excellent facilities
(probably the best in
club cricket at that time) at
Carina and the support of
former Lord Mayor Clem
Jones, who played a few games
as a sprightly 50 year old.
When we moved to Boundary
Street, we were subjected to all
sorts of jokes and I recall listening
to an end of day radio
report, where the commentator
made mention of our
having to move a herd of
cows from the field to start
the game. Another famous
story was of a snake crawling
onto the field during the
game, of course we had the
mozzies and a sewage treatment
plant adjacent to the
cricket fields (where the junior
soccer ovals are now).
As is always the case at Wynnum,
we are masters of
scrounging and we managed
to beg, borrow and more
often steal whatever we
needed at the club. In the
case of dressing rooms and a
club room we managed to
permanently borrow (steal) 2
timber sheds and a TRAM.
The Tram was famous for
many a good bonding session
as it is now called, most
notably a warm stubby and
cold pie at 6am one Sunday,
just prior to the usual weekend
working bee. (For those
current players who don’t know
what “working bee” means. It is
when club members get together
and offer free labor to do something
for the betterment of their
club.) Our President at the
time Noel Gorman was the
expert scrounger and was
eventually successful in obtaining
a grant to build our
first stand alone Besser block
structure which housed 4
smallish dressing rooms and
the old Canteen again. This
is now being used as the
Club office, toilet and
kitchen. This complex was
ideally positioned between
our 2 fields with No.1 cricket
being the current No.1 Soccer
and No.2 cricket was the
current No.1 cricket.
Functions and bonding sessions
were popular and one
in particular that was well
attended was for a member’s
birthday party with the “Fata-gram”
stripper doing her
stuff and her proud father
working on the cassette
player. Dagga and Dustin (as
8 year olds) took turns to
stand on each other’s backs
to look through the window,
of course only interested in
the music and laughter.
For those wondering about
the fate of the tram, it was
burnt (we received a good
insurance pay-out) and buried
in the area near the junior
soccer fields.
In the mid 90’s the cricket
club joined with the Soccer
club to develop an all year
round facility. More grants
were secured and a bigger
complex was built and a
Sports Club—the Gateway
Club was formed. The Sports
club started with a bang and
initially generated a healthy
income to pour into the
grounds and the sports involved.
Our dressing rooms were still
the initial Besser block structure.
Again we secured more
grants to upgrade and extend
the fields, including the moving
of the no.1 cricket to its
current position in 2000 and
building a new no.2. No
dressing rooms were ever
built on fields 2&3.
The Sporting Club did not
keep pace with industry
trends and ultimately failed.
The Qld. Lions offered to
develop the complex and
take over the management
(of the Moreton Bay Sports
club). We then gave up our
rooms and shared the demountables.
With another
Major facilities grant in 2005
Page 4
we had the opportunity to purpose
build, not 1, but 2 dressing
rooms.
Situated beside the Northern
sightscreen Cricket field 1 will
have two large dressing rooms, a
scorers room, umpires room and
space to socialize after games.
With the wider Verandah it
should give a wonderful viewing
position for players and spectators.
Fields 2 & 3 will have 4
large dressing rooms, umpires
room and Verandahs and again
ideal viewing.
In my 37 years at the Club the
most vivid and fond memories
have been the camaraderie after
games of members in all grades,
discussing the highs and lows of
the day’s play. When this socializing
was strong the club was successful.
I can say that I even
learnt a lot about the game from
those discussions.
Due to the many changes we
have had over those 37 years,
many past and current players
have not had the opportunities
for such interaction. It is the
club’s intention to open the club
room directly after the day’s play
not just for 1 st and 2 nd grade who
are playing there, but for the entire
club to return and report on
the days events. We will acknowledge
our history by installing
statistics and memories on the
walls so that current and future
players can appreciate what has
gone before them and give them
a reason to play with honour
under the Wynnum emblem.
I propose that we name the club
room with some tag, say the
“Eagles Nest” and everyone attempt
to come back each Saturday
for an hour or so. It has already
been decided to name the
complex on no1, the “Noel Gorman
Pavilion” in recognition of
Noel’s work in the past. This will
be done at an opening function
in the New Year.

The Club Executive regards
this newsletter as an important
part of the communication
of the newsletter depends
on the continued contribution
from Club members.
A vote of thanks to those
contributors who have responded
done.
The content of this newsletter
does not necessarily
reflect the opinions of the
executive of the Club or of
the editor.
Heading down the Gold
Coast is always fun in Second
Grade – if not for the
inevitable sledge fest against
the Dolphins but for the
night out that always ensues
with a stay away from the
swamp!
But more on that later.
After a more than tumultuous
week at the selection
table with half of the club
pulling out week 2 of this
round with uni exams, weddings,
funerals, injuries or
just generally not giving a
damn we stumbled onto
Kerrydale with a team which
in no way resembled the
teams of the previous 3
rounds.
Trasky did us a huge favour
helping out from Under 18’s
but Hughesy caused us even
more grief when he busted
his hamstring at training
during a fantastic running
drill set up by Nivo that will
never grace Boundary Street
again!
With Nutty going to First
Grade for the second week
and Stoney replacing him we
were desperate to field first
and I was more than overjoyed
when I lost the toss
and their skipper told me
that he wanted to bat first.
My feelings had changed
about 3 hours later when I
looked at the scoreboard and
they had made their way to 1
for 160 odd, but as usual
Gold Coast took the gas
against some good bowling
by us and they could only
manage 280 from this position
of strength.
Second Grade vs Gold Coast at Kerrydale.
Nutty again bowled well with
no luck, Dolf bowled some
great half volleys to get five fa
and Mal continued to bowl
well picking up another 3.
Phatt bowled some 20 odd
overs and still has none for
the season.
The second week saw a lot of
rain fall on Kerrydale but it
held up considerably well
under the circumstances. We
looked to be a chance of
getting on at about 2.30pm
after I tried to call it off half
an hour earlier but their skipper
was worried that his ball
might get a little wet in the
puddles whilst we chased 280
off 50 overs (AMAZING!).
So we were forced to endure
the same boring stories from
Stoney for almost the entire
day as he recounted (yet
again) his supposed glory
days when he could actually
bend his back and touch his
toes (almost). He has since
put a bill into LePetit to replace
his slippers which got a
little damp whilst trudging
the outfield looking for a
missing (and supposedly winning)
TAB slip.
Week ones drink was a
goody yet it was mysteriously
not well attended. Phatt,
Mal, Dog and myself met up
with Phatts mate Cub for a
couple of quiet drinks at the
local watering hole after enduring
an hour long phone
calling mission back at the
unit by an unknown person
who has since been accused
by a number of the First
Graders of keeping them up
past their bed time the night
before yet another do or die
Page 5
one day game. As usual there are
no stories to recount from the
drink as everyone was on their
best behaviour and tucked up in
bed by 10pm.
Letters to the editor.
From the selection table:
I’d like to acknowledge the work
done by the captains and selectors
in getting teams on the paddock
for Round 4 and the spirit
in which players accepted those
selections.
This round presented challenges
like no other for there were 15
players unavailable over both
days for a variety of reasons. This
over-stretched the slash rule
which allows only two players to
be substituted in each team.
This season the captains work
well together, mindful of the
needs of other’s teams, to select
teams as balanced as they can.
Well done to those players who
stepped up to support the Club
rather than play for themselves by
changing personal arrangements.
This is what makes this Club’s
spirit great – in times of need
individuals were prepared to put
the Club first. As the old adage
goes “When the going gets tough,
the tough get going.”

Survival Tips by Hutcho
Kitchen survival techniques
when catering for your mates
during late night entertaining.
Chips are quick to prepare and
are a low food cost. They're
popular all year round, any
time of day or night. Not all
potatoes will produce good
chips. Good chip potatoes
need a high solids content to
ensure a distinct, mealy texture
and hearty flavor. They also
absorb less oil, producing crispier
chips. The low moisture
content means less shrinkage
for improved yield and extended
plate coverage. Proper
storage temperatures are necessary
to avoid sweet or dark
chips so don't keep your potatoes
in the refrigerator if you
are going to make chips.
Chips made from peeled potatoes
should be chilled after
cutting in cold water for 10
minutes before frying, to ensure
maximum crispiness and
so they don't stick together
while frying.
Always use clean oil to fry potatoes.
Make sure oil is the
proper temperature before
frying potatoes. Frying potatoes
in cold oil will result in more
oil absorption by the fries. The
oil is the proper temperature
when the fries don't sink when
dropped in and bubbles remain
on top of the oil. Many
people have found they get
crispier chips by blanching
potatoes in hot oil to pre-cook
chips and then finishing them
in a final fry before serving.
Remember to keep an eye on
the chips while cooking as they
can overheat.
Who was that masked man?
Well this week the top three
grades and U18s played the
pretty boys from the Coast.
Fourth grade played Valley 2,
5’s played Uni and 6’s played
the students of Griffith Uni.
Have a look at sixth Grade.
Didn’t have the best start to
the game when only half of
them found the ground. In all
my years I have never heard of
anything like that - guys it’s a
University with lots of parkland.
To top it all off they
were all out for 30 well 6 out
is all out. Then they got to
chase leather all around the
campus with the students
smashing a quick 240.
How about A grade and didn’t
the rain save those clowns.
They did well to bowl the
Coast out for 160 odd and
surprise surprise Simmo
bowled half the overs and got
half the wickets. Every week he
bowls half the overs. Give
someone else a gooo. Other
guys are pressing for selection
especially Nunns. Surely he
can’t be too far from a Bulls
berth – after all they gave Sullivan
a game.
This brings me to the batting.
At the close of play the first
day we were 4-80 with all the
super stars gone. J.R. Poole
might have scored almost the
most runs for Wynnum in A
grade but surely averaging 13
he won’t be able to hold his
place for much longer. Maybe
we should get Winfield Blue
as sponsor and tell him 1
packet for a 50 and a carton
for a 100. Worst than that
though the
Tasmanian
recruit
“L” (Teecey) is averaging only
7. Maybe we need to bring
his brother up from Tassie
for a little incentive to double
the score.
At 4-80 overnight the Wynnum
batting order looked a
big chance to collapse. I for
one wasn’t surprised to see
us lose 4 quickies to be 8-
100. Then the coach started
his rain dance and thankfully
was rewarded as it pelted
down. If Pretty Boy Doran
had had two more overs at us
we were gone cause Carlson
had no idea and Benny can’t
play spin the save himself!
Second Grade went down
the Coast and Nutty got 5 fa.
Hang on – no he didn’t - the
old fellah got it wrong. Dolf
got the 5 wickets and according
to Mappers he bowled
some of the best half volleys
and bungers to get 4 of his 5
poles caught at mid off or
cover. Two’s chased plenty of
leather to end up bowling
the Coast out for 280. But
from all reports the boys
were more keen to watch
Phat get smashed at Melbas.
Melbas has a famous drink -
the Fishbowl and apparently
Phat knocked back 3 of these
and at $37 each I hope he
wasn’t paying for them.
Young Rabnot had his first
Melbas’ experience but apparently
wouldn’t join Poole
in the fish bowl stakes. He
was happy just sitting on lolly
water as in a Benny special.
Page 6
This brings me to third
grade and the Woodsy
show. 9 for 37 if you don’t
mind – what’s going on?
Obviously he has taken
Smithy’s advice and has
learned to throw the ball up.
He has always bowled too
phlat in my opinion. Captain
Sword obviously waited far
too long to bring him into
the attack—coulda got the lot.
That just about finishes my
rant for the week. Good luck
against those North’s posers.
To quote the coach “I hate
those Storm players”.
Over and out from Smithy.

Valleys are always a tough
team to play as they have
long term players such as
Kempnich and Dudgeon, so
it was a shame that this
match was washed out after
only 10 overs of play week 2.
It was a real positive that we
batted the full 90 overs of
play in the match and only
lost 7 wickets…the previous
opposition scores against this
side this season have been
140, 160 and 208…as such,
an impressive batting effort.
We won the toss (for a
change!) and batted. Marty
"Jess" Grant was unlucky to
be LBW for 5 after he and
Hazo put on 20 for the first
wicket. We then got to watch
the Hazo and Richo show as
they took the score to exactly
1/100 off 40 overs at tea.
The boys took the score to
132, putting on our highest
partnership for the season of
112, before Hazo fell for 49.
The going was slow due to a
combination of a slow wicket
with variable bounce, some
full straight bowling and
neagtive field placements…or
as Hazo commented at Tea
"they're playing old mans
cricket…they're trying to bore
us out"…the boys showed
great powers of concentration
to focus on the job at
hand. A fantastic "Vice Captains
knock" from Richo,
who obviously relished taking
on his new responsibilities
in the side.
We tumbled to 4/147 losing
Richo for 79 and Pebbles for
not many…SOC Allen and
"Doc" Phillips tried to re-
build and got us to 173 before
the Doc was unluckily given
out stumped. Simo decided
not to hang around too long
and was also a bit unlucky to
be adjudged LBW after nearly
getting off the mark.
Woody and SOC batted well
to see out the day - 80 overs -
6/212.
Week 2 saw SOC go early,
then "Kosi" Conwell and
Woody batted solidly to take
us to our final score of 7/248.
Humpho and Benny Davidson
were passengers in this game,
however, we felt we contributed
to the team result by
looking ominous on the sidelines
with our pads on!
A special mention to Simo for
responding to the "Valleys
Official" who, late in the day,
decided to check the scores
and give us a roasting for batting
so slow…Simo diplomatically
explained to the gentleman
"Sir, it really is a little
harsh for an elder statesmen
such as yourself, who may
never have played the game
before, to be advising us young
fellows on what we should be
doing in a game of cricket,
and that perhaps, you may
care not to comment so vigorously
in our presence"…or he
said something like that???
A strong team performance
boys…lets go get Norths next
week!
Fifth grade went into the
fourth round fixture with high
hopes of another victory after
beating Redlands at home last
week to keep our great start to
the season at three from three.
Rhodesy lost another toss
which wasn’t unusual and we
were told to have a bowl.
Probably not the best toss to
lose as the wicket looked good
and the outfield lightening
fast but we went out to field in
a positive manner. We were
on the back foot early as Uni
started quite well hitting some
early boundaries and getting
off to a flyer. At the first
drinks break they were none
for about 60 odd and starting
to look dangerous. However
the strong Wynnum outfit
bounced back with a couple of
quick wickets swinging the
momentum a bit our way.
Another strong partnership by
the away team and it looked as
if Wynnum were heading for a
tough day in the field. But
again showing that Wynnum
fives are going to be the team
to beat this year we bounced
back taking a few sharp wickets
and eventually cleaning the
tail up for not many. The
wickets where shared around
with some tight bowling from
Southy bagging 3 and Tommy
Manvell also snagging 3 poles.
DJ Rogers also contributed
with 2 as well as Helen of
Troy. We ended up bowling
Uni out for a total of 197
which we where happy with
considering the start they had.
With about an hour and a bit
left in the day our game plan
was keep wickets to a minimum
and score a few setting
up ourselves for the second
week to take the match. Rhodesy
and Gibb opened the
batting and started quite well
and looked comfortable in the
middle with Gibb playing
some fluent shots through the
off side but soon edged one to
slip where the juggling act
took place with the ball touching
about three pairs of hands
before Gibb was finally dismissed
in the teens. This
brought in White Russian aka
Captain Roof aka Pody. Only
there for the one week’s play
Pody decided to steady the
ship with Rhodesy but unfortunately
soon after Rhodesy
guided one to gully as if it was
catching practice. Brooky was
called to the crease to form
the lethal left hand combina-
tion. Both batted extremely
well and hung around to end
of the days play with Captain
Roof 27 n.o. and Brooky one
more with 28 n.o. and ending
the days play at 2 fa 88 setting
up the win for the next week,
which was unfortunately
spoiled by the rain and only
ending up with a draw.
Rhett
Women
Finally the Wynnum 1 st
grade ladies have got a team
on the field and had a resounding
victory. With a
first round bye and then an
unfortunate forfeit due to
lack of numbers, the 1 st
grade girls reconsolidated
to bowl Sandgate/Redcliffe
out for 134. Trish Brown
claimed 3/19 with great
support from Clare Thompson
3/10 (our resident kiwi
who is sounding more and
more like an Australian
everyday). We will test that
theory next time when we
have the opposition 6 for. I
would also like to welcome
Taija Davis to our club.
Taija is a 15 year old State
High student who is currently
in the Under 17
Queensland Squad. Not
short on confidence, you
can find Taija bouncing the
Taverner and Ray Weir
Cup boys on Friday nights
in the nets instead of bowling
to her own teammates.
Page 8
Taija picked up her first 1 st
grade wicket last week and
had the figures of 1-21.
Well done. All other bowlers
picked up one each as
well except for 16 year old
Alice Nicklin who went
wicketless, after last year
claiming the aggregate for
1 st grade wickets. She may
find herself relegated to
keeper if she keeps up these
performances as our wicketkeeper
is the form bowler
in the nets at the moment!
Following week, Wynnum
scored 6/303 (Clare is still
a kiwi), with Julia Price
scoring 120, Nicole Quinn
(Qld Under 19 squad member)
scoring an aggressive
43 and Lyndall Daley who
this year has been elevated
to Cricket Australia Cup
Squad, an impressive 76
not. This, however, is the
end of our 2 day rounds
until February so it will be
back to one-day cricket next
weekend. Well done girls.
Julia
