First Grade vs Wests at Grammar.
Hello all. Welcome to another
great first grade report.
All the boys were very
excited about playing at our
new home ground, no one
more so than Bullet who
has now started providing
lunch to a gourmet standard.
Simmo won the toss
and elected to bat on a
dampish wicket, but with a
soaked outfield it was the
right call. Our superstars
opened the batting and
Simmo got a good one early,
which brought birthday boy
Nicho (30 th ) to the crease.
He and Dagga helped themselves
to a few runs and got
us to lunch at one fa 60.
Nicho got out soon after
lunch for 20 odd. Trumpy
and Dagga took us to 100
before a Wynnum collapse
saw us 8 fa 180 at stumps.
Week 2 started with a lot of
ass, play was delayed for two
hours due to a wet pitch.
Puss and Rhino were at the
crease but not for long as
Puss got one that jumped
off length, and Poole fell to
a bunger, leaving the worlds
best jack not out (and looking
good).
West’s chasing 190 for victory.
Laughlin and Carlson
opened the bowler, both
bowled tight but without
success. Simmo brought
himself on and was unplay-
able. He picked up the first
four to have West’s 4 fa 90
at lunch. A run out after
lunch and another couple to
Simmo had West’s 9 fa 140.
Jonesy showed so good work
in the outfield to run out
some nuffie, West’s all out
144. Four overs remained in
the day, the worlds best jack
thought he would show
everyone how good his batting
was, then realized he
was jack for a reason, after
being an hour and a half
late on pull shot, out first
ball of the innings.
Dagga 50 odd a few other
blokes 20.
Simmo 6 fa Benny 2 fa a
couple of run outs.
Wynnum Manly 190 (Broad 53,
Nicholson 28, Watts 27, Seng 28,
Murnane 3/29) & 2/12 defeated
Wests 157 (Paulsen.S 37, Forward
33, Simpson 6/74, Laughlin
2/35) .
Honour Board.
In starting the season with 5 wins from 7 games we had our best round against Wests (4 from 6) in 10 seasons. The losing grades
were very competitive with threes 9/274 and fours 249 but unable to secure a win. The policy of using experienced players in
leading roles in these grades promises to produce results. Thirds with the services of life members Wayne Broad (374) and Ian
Duncan (300) have the benefit of players having played over 600 matches for the Club. Broad is playing his 31st season and Duncan
his 23rd. Similarly fourths with David Humphries (142) and Craig Thomas (100) have plenty of experience. There are another
10 current players who have played between 100 and 150 matches to contribute their experience. With record player numbers
we are fielding a sixth grade in the Warehouse comp for the first time in many years to give as many players as possible a
game. These guys had a good win against Macgregor.
After enduring Coach
Niven’s tumultuous preseason
training regime the
Second Grade Team traipsed
out to dis-Graceville with
what seemed like a very
strong team “on paper”.
We arrived to find a very
good deck which I was going
to have no hesitation in batting
on, however I invariably
lost the toss and we were sent
in to the field.
We started off well with both
Hutcho and Dolf bowling a
very good line and length,
but at 4 for 45 the weather
intervened and we were
forced to take an early lunch.
After the lunch break the
ball became very wet and
sodden thus not allowing me
to bowl Mal’s darts. Hutcho
told me that he was going
well and was right to keep
going as Charlie replaced
Dolf.
A couple of the Wests players
put on a few runs but
none of them could handle
Hutcho’s pace or class at this
level as he finished a 28 over
spell with 7 for 84 which
enabled us to limit Wests to
a total of 202.
We had to endure five overs
late in the day and Mal
opened the batting with
Prowsey as Deano and Hughesy
had a Soccer Granny to
play in. We managed to finish
the day none down.
Day two showed much of the
same with regards to the
wicket – it was a belter with a
very fast outfield.
Second Grade vs West at Graceville.
Mal nicked one in the first
over and Deano joined him
soon after to have us at 2 for
14.
Hughesy strolled to the
crease and promptly hit the
spinner back over his head
for six to get off the mark for
the season.
Hughesy and Prowsey batted
well before Hughesy went for
26 and then Shaky watched
one roll back on to his
stumps for 6.
Prowsey and I then put on
80 odd and we passed them
5 down for a very good win
but we weren’t done yet.
Prowsey got his well earned
ton and I nicked one for 42
before Rabbs came out in his
first senior game for the club
and proceeded to smash
them all over the park.
Prowsey was finally dismissed
for a brilliant 143 firmly
planting his name in front of
the First Grade selectors after
his hard pre-season work.
Rabbs kept smashing them
and Hutcho joined in for his
customary 25.
Rabbs ran Charlie out and
Dolf, batting for the first
time in his life at number
11scored 20 not out in a 50
run partnership for the final
wicket before Rabbs finally
missed one to be dismissed
for an excellent 75.
A team total of 368 was an
awesome start to the season
particularly as it is the highest
Second Grade score in
over five years.
Page 3
We had to bowl 13 overs at
the end but couldn’t get any
bonus points in the field.
In all it was a great win with
many good individual performances
but more importantly
a solid all round team
performance.
We look forward with great
anticipation to next round
when we hopefully play Wiggles
and Spiersy who are now
playing for Beenleigh.
Mappers.
Letters to the editor.
Dear Editor
Why am I continually picked
in fourth grade when I
clearly have the ability to play
seconds. Can you explain the
selection policy to me?
Wayne Scott ,chairman of
selectors, has generously
agreed to answer this query.
I am ….… sick of you ………
….… asking me about ………
selections. If you …… well
checked your …….. results
you ……….. ………would not
have to ask me stupid ………
questions.
Coach Wayne Niven when
asked for his comment, replied
-
I am ….… sick of you ………
….… asking me about ………
selections. If you ……well
checked your …….. results
you ………. ……….. would not
have to ask me stupid ………
questions.
Ed. We hope that has cleared
up any misunderstanding.

Travel Tips by Dizzy
People from certain countries
need an entry clearance to enter
the UK for any reason. Entry
clearance in the form of a passport
sticker is required for all nonvisa
colonials who intend to play
cricket in the UK .
If you have a valid UK visa, you
will not normally be refused entry
to the UK on arrival unless your
circumstances have changed, you
gave false information, or you did
not tell the entry clearance officer
important facts when you applied
for your visa.
The visa tells the immigration
officer at a UK port of arrival:
· the purpose of your travel;
· how long you can stay in the
UK; and the latest date that you
can enter the UK.
Normally, you may enter and
leave the UK as many times as you
like during the validity of your
visa.
Visa Requirements for the
Highly Skilled Cricketer Programme
(HSCP)
You are strongly advised to submit
your application in good time.
This programme is designed to
allow individuals with exceptional
personal skills and experience to
come to the United Kingdom to
seek and play cricket.
It is a new way of allowing individuals
to migrate to the United
Kingdom. It aims to provide an
individual migration route for
highly skilled persons who have
the skills and experience required
by the United Kingdom to compete
in the cricketing world.
Who was that masked man?
Welcome to the first Smithy
report! I have taken it upon
myself to report on the goings
on within the inner
sanctum of Wynnum players.
This involves all players,
coaches and officials.
The first topic of conversation
is will Wayne Broad
ever retire? He has realised
that a certain J. Poole is rapidly
closing in on his title as
the highest scorer for the
great Sea Eagles! Sword has
decided that this year he will
dominate 3 rd grade bowlers
from around the Brisbane
Grade scene! It started with
the domination of a Wests
3 rd grade attack on the picturesque
Boundary St No2.
Sword was apparently ecstatic
when he was informed
that 6 th Grade runs count as
he thinks he will be able to
dominate this Grade at age
73. Gary Craig’s 12 year old
son smashed them in 6 th
Grade so Sword is licking his
lips.
My next area of concern is
one William Evans! For
someone who has a day job
as a furniture removalist I
found it quite unusual and a
little concerning that he was
lecturing fellow Wynnum
players on why he didn’t
agree with the great Greek
Philosopher Socrates. I find
it hard to believe that William
would have any knowledge
of a man who was born
400 years before Christ!
However I believe he is lecturing
on this subject this
Saturday at the Port Office!
Lets hope Bulla has some
knowledge on the subject as
he has no idea of how to
pick up
women!
At one of
the first social functions for
the year Nicho’s 30 th Birthday
there were a few stories
told, for me there were a few
highlights. Probably high on
the agenda was Nichp standing
on the kitchen bench
downing Jager Bombs however
all and sundry were very
disappointed with his showing
in fight club in next
doors apartment!
Rabnott better known as
Spot also made an absolute
clown of himself when everyone
realised that he had 3
beers and was absolutely
blind—at least now we know
Ryan Poole can go drink for
drink with someone in the
club! Spot blind however was
in good form when was asking
Nutty how old he was.
When Nutty replied with 26
Spot then proceeded to tell
Nutty that he thought he
would be old enough to be
his Dad! Then Spot asked
“mate when I am in Brisbane
can you be my Dad?” One K.
Poole also made himself look
like a clown that night by
trying to teach one of the
female patrons of the party
how to go Ten Pin Bowling!
From all reports she wasn’t a
fan! But lets be honest who is
a fan?
There has been a few rumblings
around the club with
the amount of overs some
people are bowling! Our 1 st
Grade captain bowled 35
straight on Saturday then
gets all the accolades for taking
6 fa. If any other hero in
Page 5
the team bowled 35 straight
into a wet patch they would
have got 8 fa come on mate
give some of the other guys a
go! Mappers also tried to
bowl Hutch into the ground
28 straight! Hutch must have
been dying for a bunga! However
Mappers thought he
would prove a point and let
no other chucker bowl and
the final result was 7fa for
Hutch! A better result than
the A grade captain however
come on boys other guys pay
their fees how about giving
them a go!
Who could forget our chairman
of selectors he apparently
got 6 fa 11 what a joke!
I think he was playing against
a blind team and he took the
bell out! I have seen 6 year
olds bowl better than that
guy! Next thing you know he
will be into Nivo’s ear about
all the hard work he been
putting in at training etc.
Look out Humpho he wants
your spot!
That just about rounds
things up for the first
Smithy report however during
the course of the year
there will be guest columns
by club legends the Toecutter,
top gunner Ivor Hill
and of course who could
forget the Rat’s guest panel
after the Uni game!
Good luck against those
Grass Cutters from
Beenleigh!
Over and out!
Smithy.

Fourth Grade vs Wests at Graceville.
* Even though Brisbane has
Level 4 water restrictions,
our first week of cricket for
the new season was a drizzly,
cold day. During warm ups,
the pitch looked hard and
the weather was clear. …we
then won the toss, elected to
bat….and it poured down!!!
The umpires got us on at
3pm, with the Wests covers
having some wonderful holes
at one end - on a good length
for a left hander.
* Our openers, Thommo &
Hazo were not fazed and put
on a fantastic first wicket
partnership of 98 before
Hazo snicked one for 39. By
this stage, the Wests boys
had dropped their heads, the
ball was stuffed and we were
on top. The next half hours
play saw Aldo trapped LBW
for 9 and we were 2/122. We
made it to 143, right at the
end of the day, when we lost
3 quick wickets to their offie
bowling darts…and it was a
hat-trick for him. We ended
up finishing the day 5/148.
* An early start week 2 saw us
playing 90 overs for the day.
We were hoping to set them
around 250+ off around 50-
55 overs - given that it was a
hard pitch with a quick outfield.
After SOC was run out
for 23 and Humpho gunned
for 18, we slumped to 9/203.
Some enterprising batting
from no 10 Southy (31) and
No 11 Weier (14 not) put on
46 for the last wicket and
gave Wests a chase of 250 to
win off 64 overs (the same
number we faced for our
249!)* Wests lost their
first wicket for 15 when
Weier bowled their opener,
however, we struggled to
dismiss the top order.
Humpho came on and
picked up the other opener
when the score was 34.
However, from there the
ball stopped swinging and
the runs started flowing. It
was a bit like highlights
cricket as the Wests boys
played and missed, snicked
for 4's, then launched the
ball to the boundary.
* Our goal was to have
them 5 down with around
100 to get off 20 odd
overs…we just struggled to
take the wickets. Humpho
knocked over the number 3
when the score was 94,
then the the Wests boys put
on 102 for the 4th wicket
to be 4/196 - young Hazo
took the wicket. Aldo took
another one to have then
5/212 & Hazo again
bowled well to get another
6/238….* in the end, Wests
got the runs in the 62nd
over despite a really hard
fight from the Wynnum
boys…it was a great game of
cricket to watch due to the
fact that the boys never
gave up. Though we grassed
a couple of chances, the
fielding/catching was exceptional.
* Sometimes, in
cricket as in life, you don't
always finish on the right
side of the ledger…this was
one of those times, however,
I am sure that the
hurt from this loss will hold
us in good stead for the rest
of the season.
Fifth Grade vs Wests at Boundary St 3.
Wynnum Manly 137 (Podagiel 30,
def Wests 99 (Scott 6/11).
The start of the 2006/07 season
hit an early speed bump,
with the Wynnum 5’s, like
every other team in Brisbane,
showing up to play in annoying
rain to find the covers still in
use. After a frustrating hour
long wait, the skies finally
cleared enough for the covers
to be removed and the toss
decided—Wade continuing last
season’s trend by losing and we
were sent in to bat. With the
deck in fairly good shape we
were pleased to be sent in,
knowing that the wet pill
would cause Wests a few headaches
and hopefully assist the
Wynnum effort. With this the
season had finally begun, Jonty
and Dan Rogers heading out
to the middle to get proceedings
underway. Shortly after
the start of play, the showers
returned and didn’t leave for
the afternoon but the game
trudged on the outfield and
pitch both a little worse off
as a result. Runs became
hard to come by, with the
wet conditions turning possible
boundaries into singles
and twos and slowing the
run rate down considerably.
Both openers were removed
after making starts and Pody
and Brooky set about stabilizing
the scorebook in the
tough conditions. The pair
began a gutsy partnership till
Brooky hit one that slowed
right up in the covers and he
was run out, the old legs not
quite getting him home. A
few more quick wickets fell,
with Pody still not out batsmen
and before we knew it
we were in strife at 5 for 60
odd. In came the Wynnum
debutant Rhett Parker and
another promising partnership
was grafted out. The
pair added another 20 until
Pody was dismissed for a
hard earned 30, bowled trying
to hit one into the surrounding
mangroves. Rhett
became the new rock, batting
with Azza, Tom the Pom and
Evans till he was bowled on
24. Stumps were called at 9 –
131, leaving us with plenty to
work on in the nets on Tuesday.
We resumed play a week
later to blue skies, chirping
birds and a rock hard deck –
one of the finest I have seen
in my extensive tenure at
Boundary 3. Unfortunately
Scotty was quickly removed,
leaving Will with the red ink
and Wests with a total of 137
to reel in. Knowing the task
ahead of us we took to the
field keen as mustard, determined
to have a win in our
first fixture.
From the start the pressure
was outstanding, Scotty and
Helen of Troy bagging an
early pole each putting the
Graceville boys on the back
foot. The bowling and fielding
of the team was commendable,
runs proving hard
to come by for Wests who
were evidently troubled by
Scotty, the big fella claiming
two more. Just when we had
Wests where we wanted
them at 4 for not many, our
standards fell away and a 4 th
wicket partnership shaped to
cripple our early hard work.
Rog eventually broke the
pair with a mixture of relief
and laughter – our makeshift
keeper Pody having coughed
up a complete sitter the ball
before!! Scotty came back on
to tie up the danger man
who was eventually removed
for 45 trying to slash a Tom
Mumford bunger through
point only to find the middle
of Rich Blackburn’s outstretched
claw, Webcke pulling
off a screamer much to
his own surprise.
The ball was now back in our
court, with the depleted
Wests tail firmly on struggle
street and the Wynnum boys
closing in on a round 1 victory.
Evans and Scotty removed
the final 3 poles in no
time; Wests all out for 99,
locking in our first innings
win. Every bowler proved
consistent and patient on a
great batting deck and
Helen, Evans, Mumford and
Rog were rewarded with a
wicket each. However from
the start it was unquestionably
the Wayne Scott show –
big Shrek claiming the amazing
figures of 6 – 11 off 18
accurate overs. Scotty was
outstanding, bowling with an
endurance and determination
no one thought his physique
would allow, making us
young blokes feel lazy and
slow. Well done Scotty.
Thanks also to Steve White
for filling in, the senior member
in the field nearly taking
a Schweppes classic in the
gully to top Webcke’s effort
and making us all laugh with
his animated banter.
With time remaining we
went back into bat and with
a mixture of questionable
decisions and stupid shots
we crumbled to be all out for
96, Pody the lone bat worth
a mention with a crafty 47 –
making him top score in
each dig and setting his season
in motion. This 2 nd innings
effort proved to be a
valuable wake up call for the
side, showing the need to
work harder than ever at
training.
The day was rounded out
with a shaky rendition of the
club song (another area to
improve in) and a few
goldies, the Wynnum 5’s
happy to start the season on
a winning note.
Next week we take on Souths
at Boundary 3 and look to go
2 – 0 to assert our presence
on the Roy Tanner Shield.
Volume 7, Issue 1 – Round 1.
Day 1
Sun was shining when we
arrived at Dunlop Park &
looked at a wet wicket. It
started raining delaying the
toss. Cameron Trask won the
toss & sent Wests into bat,
but again before play commenced
it rained again.
When play eventually got
started Shaun Pearce opened
the bowling with 3 maidens.
At the other end we opened
with Cameron Trask to see if
his mediums would suit the
conditions. Cameron broke
through clean bowling the
opener for the score to be 1
for 11 in the 10 th over.
West’s batsmen dug in with
the wet conditions making
scoring difficult and bowling
hard with a wet ball. They
took the score to 49 before
Chris Downes struck having
the batsmen caught beautifully
down low at first slip
with the score on 49 in the
18 th over. The next over Chris
Stack removed the other
opener caught in short midoff
by Trasky without any
addition to the score.
Wests again consolidated taking
the score to 72 in the 32 nd
over when Lachy Williams
trapped the batsman LBW to
a ball that skidded through.
West then went to lunch
when it started to rain with
the score at 4 for 80.
The rain was quite heavy over
the lunch break and when the
covers were removed there
was water on the pitch in a
large area just short of a good
length at the southern end
thanks to holes in the covers.
The umpires said they would
look at the pitch in an hour
Under 18’s vs Wests at Dunlop Park.
but with the amount of water
on the pitch were not confident
at getting back on.
Youngie asked their coach for
rags to soak up the water
which he went and got them.
Youngie and a couple of their
fathers mopped up the water
and they got grass clippings
and rolled them in & when
the umpires looked at the
pitch it was right to play.
In the 2nd over after lunch /
rain break Pearcy got one to
jump a bit & had their next
batsman caught at short midoff
by Trasky. The very next
ball was an action replay and
West’s had tumbled to 6/ 85.
West held on to finish the day
at 6 fa 105 off 47 overs, with
Pearcy the pick of our bowlers
taking 2 for 15 off 12 overs.
Day 2
The weather was fine and the
pitch looking quite good.
Stacky struck in the 3 rd over
having the batsman caught
behind by Rhys Estall with
the score on 109. We then
had some erratic fielding giving
away a few overthrows
before Lachy Williams had a
direct hit from mid off to
have Wests 8 for 117. With
the 1 st ball of his next over
Stacky and Rhys combined
for another wicket. 5 balls
later Stacky clean bowled the
last batter and West’s had
succumbed for 117, with
Stack ending up with 4 for 35
off 11 overs and Pearcy having
figures of 2 for 18 off 15 overs
which included 7 maidens.
Jake Harris and Fergie Reid
opened the batting and got us
away to a good start before
Fergie was brilliantly caught
one handed down low and
wide by the keeper when the
score was on 24. Jake was
joined by Luke (Mullet) Waters
and continued the good
work before Jake was out
caught behind for 27 when
the score was 56.
Cameron Trask joined Mullet
but was out shortly afterwards
for our 1 st “duck” of the season.
Downes was next in and
he and Mullet batted sensibly
and went about building a
partnership before Downesie
was bowled for 22 at 4/ 109.
Mullet was out for a well compiled
42 shortly afterwards
when we were 4 runs short of
victory, caught behind flicking
at a ball down the leg side.
Rhys Estall was joined by Lachy
and scored the required
runs just before lunch. Lachy
went shortly after play resumed
for 2. Schultzy came
and went for none and we
were now 8 for 138. Marshall
Ross and Rhys took the score
to 147 before Rhys was caught
after making a valuable 22.
Stacky was last man in and he
& Marshall remained not out
when we declared at 9 for
154, leaving us and hour and
a half to try and obtain some
bowling bonus points.
We got only 2 wickets in the
2 nd inning with Stacky getting
the first wicket caught and
bowled when the score was
20. The other wicket fell at
48 when Schultzy enticed the
batter to try and hit over the
top to have him brilliantly
caught one handed by Stacky
at mid on. Wests finsihed the
day on 77 for 2. with our spinners
Schultzy and Marshall
getting a bowl.
Page 8
Batting we saw Mullet score a
good 42 with Jake batting well
for 27 being our main contributors.
They were well supported by
Downesy and Rhys both scoring
22. In the field Trasky took 3
catches at short mid off while
Rhys got 2 catches with the
gloves and Fergie took a great
catch at slip. Lachly’s ground
fielding was good and he was
rewarded with a run out.
we can build on this against
