Executive Director’s Report
One meal can make a difference in someone’s
life, and each and every one of us has the
power to provide it.
January 1 to March 31st we saw 336,583
client visits to our partner food banks and
meal sites and the number of people being
served continues to increase. The mix of
people needing assistance has changed. In
years past, families would go to the food
bank once a month or every other week to
supplement their income. More and more of those same families need to
go once or twice a week. Individuals are making choices between paying
the rent or mortgage, buying necessary medicine or having enough food
to feed their family. We have seen an increase in the number of seniors and
families with young children needing assistance.
In 2010, EFN began purchasing truckloads of food to keep pace with the
increasing need. This strategy allows us better pricing and the ability to
select nutritious food. Thanks to the generous donations of our many
supporters, our partner programs can count on a reliable, predictable
supply of staple items.
To budget effi ciently, we are asking our donors to consider becoming
monthly supporters. We recognize, for example, that it can be very
diffi cult to write a $600 check, but committing to $50 per month is more
manageable. Many lives would be touched by meals from EFN because of
your monthly generosity.
You can provide meals for people in other ways:

stress the importance of maintaining the state food assistance programs

Organize a food and donation drive at your workplace, school, place of worship, or
civic goup. Donation drives are more effective than food drives because EFN can turn
$1 into $12 worth of food!

in the budget. The Farmers Market Nutrition Program for WIC and
seniors, School Meals, and the Emergency Food Assistance Program
were all preserved. You made a difference in someone’s life.
• More and more of us are growing gardens than ever before. Did you
know that all of your extra produce can be taken to your local food
bank? I visited a neighborhood garden the other day in the north
end of Tacoma and saw that two of the raised beds had “Food Bank”
signs on them. All of the produce grown and lovingly tended by all
the neighbors goes to the food bank closest to the garden. Farmer’s
market-style fresh produce; it doesn’t get any better than that! Seeds
will be available in all branches of Pierce County Libraries in May. You
can make a difference in someone’s life, one tomato or zucchini at a
time.
• If you have a fruit tree or trees in your yard, please register them with
the Pierce County Gleaning Project (Page 5). You can also become
your neighborhood’s coordinator and promote the program to your
friends. In 2011, approximately 50,000 pounds of fruit and produce
that would have been wasted was gleaned and distributed. That made
a difference in someone’s life.
• There are volunteer opportunities at our warehouse and at our farm.
One person or a group of most any size is welcome to come and assist.
Without the many wonderful volunteers giving of their time we could
not operate. Please consider this hands on way to make a difference in
someone’s life.

than 15.5 million meals that we provide annually.

From an interview with Stew Bowen of Bonney Lake Food Bank:
EFN: What is the name of your food bank?
SB: Bread of Life Bonney Lake Food Bank.
EFN: What community do you serve?
SB: We serve east Pierce County (anyone who comes to us).
EFN: How long have you been in operation?
SB: 18 years.
EFN: Tell us a little bit about your program. (Who you serve,
what it’s like, why you do it)
SB: We serve lunch at 5 sites and supper at 1 site, we serve
sack meal style and we are looking at another site to better
serve the kids over the summer. Hunger does not stop
because the last school bell rings.
EFN: What does EFN mean to your food program and the
community?
SB: EFN is vital to our success providing guidance, support,
food, and encouragement. Without the support of EFN and
other partners we could not serve the community in need
with the variety or volume of items we are able to serve.
In Pierce County, 15.1% of our population is
food insecure and 20% of children do not get
enough food to eat. In the United States 30%
of all food, worth $48.3 billion, is thrown away
each year. The Pierce County Gleaning Project
exists precisely because of these two statistics.
We work to connect the dots between hunger
and waste.
We have all seen the results of food waste in
our local communities- a neighborhood fruit
tree ripens beautifully, only to have all of the
fruit fall and rot on the ground, uneaten. Meanwhile, many of our neighbors
don’t have enough to eat. Diet related diseases in low-income populations
are now on the rise due to reduced access to healthy foods like fresh produce.
It doesn’t have to be this way!
Last year, the Pierce County Gleaning Project harvested over 29,700 pounds
of fresh produce from neighborhood fruit trees, farmers markets, and local
farms. This year, we expect to increase this
number, and we need your help to do so.
What can you do?
The Pierce County Gleaning Project, a
collaboration between Emergency Food
Network and Harvest Against Hunger,
depends on volunteers to run these three
main programs:
Neighborhood Fruit Tree Harvest: We
can help you pick your excess tree fruit
and donate it to a local food bank. If you
have a fruit tree, register it online at www.
piercecountygleaningproject.org or call
(253) 383-5048. You can also volunteer to
harvest trees in your neighborhood!
On-Farm Gleans: Gleaning, the ancient
practice of harvesting excess food for those
in need, is an important way for food banks
to get produce. Every Friday morning beginning in June we host farm harvest
parties starting at Mother Earth Farm in Puyallup. Email emily@efoodnet.org

EFN Staff Profile
EFN is excited to welcome new staff
member Elizabeth Chipps-Freeman.
Elizabeth is our Associate Development
Director, a new position created to
bolster the organization’s efforts to
gain more support throughout the
community.
Elizabeth comes to EFN on the heels
of her return from managing an
orphanage in Kenya for three and a half
years. The Dunga Orphanage Project is
a nonprofi t organization dedicated to
providing for the basic human needs
of roughly 40 orphan children within a
small AIDS ravaged village in Kenya.
Most of these children lost both of their
parents to the virus. Elizabeth managed
the fi nances of the orphanage and coordinated communication between sponsors
and kids. In addition, she created many of the policies, set up a board, worked with
the Children’s Department, and worked with teachers.
Her passion for serving in Africa started when she was young, after seeing a video in
school about children in Ethiopia. “It just stuck with me,” she says. Knowing this, her
mother invited her to hear a Kiwanis Club speaker who ran a nursery school in Kenya.
Elizabeth met with the speaker and agreed to volunteer to fulfi ll her childhood dream.
After six months in Kenya, Elizabeth knew she wanted to stay longer and applied for
a permanent position with the Dunga Orphanage Project.

Experiencing another culture and helping kids at the orphanage is something that
Elizabeth values tremendously, along with the opportunity to see elephants, her
favorite animal. Still, she was happy to return to Washington to enjoy familiar foods
and to shower under hot running water.
Why EFN? “It’s an organization that I believe is important and everyone working
here seems very dedicated to the mission of the organization.” That is why after
taking a month off after returning home, Elizabeth decided to interview and accept
the position. It was easy for her to see the benefi ts of fi ghting hunger in Pierce
County, and she found ties to the work she did in Kenya. “The guardians of the
children, if they had them, couldn’t always provide basic essentials like food for the
orphans,” she says, “so part of my job was making sure basic needs were always
being met.”
Prior to Kenya, Elizabeth worked at the Seattle Children’s Home for two years as a
Primary-2 Residential Counselor, working with children who were not yet ready for
the foster care system. Many were teenager dealing with trauma, so the nurturing
she provided would help get her clients to a place where they could succeed in
foster care. Elizabeth grew up in Puyallup, attended Puyallup High School, and
majored in Social Work at Seattle University.
“Development” at a nonprofi t of EFN’s size and scope encompasses a range
of activities, including fi nding and securing major gifts from caring individuals,
sustaining annual giving, writing grants, coordinating events, working with
volunteers, connecting with corporations and local businesses, creating newsletters
and other publications, maintaining a donor database, managing social media, and
community relations. Development Director Jeff Klein has worked with Helen and
various support staff to expand the budget in order to meet the increased need in
our community, but a healthy, thriving organization needs a solid balance of multiple
funding sources. Elizabeth will write grants and help on the public relations side,
allowing for more of a focus on individual giving as a greater source of revenue. Our
goal? More money for more food to alleviate hunger in Pierce County!

VOLUNTEER!
Volunteers are a signifi cant part of Emergency Food Network’s success.
Whether it’s weekly, monthly or every so often, your willingness to
help those in need is invaluable.
Distribution Warehouse:
Groups of volunteers help out in our warehouse Monday through Saturday
with a variety of tasks. Food sorting, order building, truck loading and
unloading, and repacking are just a few of the important jobs that keep EFN
running.
Mother Earth Farm
Volunteers prepare the land for cultivation, plant seeds, weed the fi elds, and
harvest food throughout the growing season. Once food is harvested it is
immediately available for Pierce County feeding programs, often arriving
within hours of harvesting.

A Word from an
EFN Volunteer

Each October, Tacoma Public Utilities’
Community Connection Leadership
Team evaluates our programming
and makes recommendations for the
coming year. As part of that evaluation,
we take a look at the most pressing needs in the community based on current call
volume to 2-1-1. Utility assistance and food are consistently among the top needs in
our community, so, it just made sense for us to direct employee volunteer resources
toward hunger issues. We see it as another direct way we can help our customers.
We also noticed that many of our employee volunteers did not have large amounts of
time to commit to volunteering. It better suited them to have several smaller volunteer
opportunities throughout the year rather than just a few with a larger time commitment.
EFN Repacks offer our employees a chance to get to know each other as they work.
I’ve been in on some really funny conversations over a table full of frozen corn! We’ve
noticed that volunteers love this opportunity. Each time we have a Repack on the
calendar, we don’t even have to advertise it. People just ask when the next event will
be and we keep a running list.
It also helps that our volunteers
tend to be motivated and
competitive. There have also
been Repacks where the
volunteers were so focused on
working fast that the chatter
was at a minimum. Volunteers
have found their expertise,
whether it’s bagging, taping
or moving large boxes around.
Our volunteers take their work
seriously – no matter what it is,
and they are very proud of the
results! Each Monday after a Repack, someone will call, email, or stop by my desk
to tell me how many pounds of what food they packed on Saturday. It has given
our employees something fun to talk about around campus and there is an ongoing
debate about the best type of food to repack. Naturally, it’s usually the heavy stuff!
Repacking food is a very tangible activity for our volunteers. They can see their results
immediately. It has also been nice for our volunteers to see the full circle of food
assistance in Pierce County. Our employees also volunteer with My Sister’s Pantry and
FISH Food Banks. They see repacked food from EFN come through their hands as they
work at these other agencies and the whole circle just clicks. We also had volunteers
working at Mother Earth Farm last fall. So really, our employees have touched all
aspects of the food circle in our community.
I like to think that this experience has made our employees more thoughtful members
of this community. They now understand why it is important to donate items like
peanut butter and tuna to food drives rather than whatever they may have on their
shelf at home. They also seem more attentive to the needs of our community. Once a
person has an understanding of the challenges related to the most basic needs, it is
easier to understand how the entire puzzle fi ts together.

Saturday, May 12 marks the date of this year’s National
Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. This event
brings in over 300,000 pounds of food to help feed
the hungry children, seniors and adults that visit food
banks, shelters and meal sites 110,000 times each
month. All of the food donated by the community is
picked up by letter carriers and is collected, weighed,
sorted, and distributed by EFN to local emergency
food programs throughout Pierce County.

More Than Words...
Once upon a time (last year),
in the land of books and
publishing, Harlequin asked
readers, authors and fans to
help choose the recipients for
the 2012 Harlequin More Than
Words award—a national
contest that recognizes and
rewards women making
extraordinary contributions to
their community. After more
than 111,000 online votes and
7,800 Facebook shares, the
2012 recipients of the eighth
annual Harlequin More Than
Words award were chosen –
one being EFN’s own Helen McGovern! Each of the three honorees
received $15,000 for her charity. The story continues as the three
award winners are paired up with three of Harlequin’s authors to
write short stories inspired by the life and work of the recipients. The
short stories will be available in 2013 in ebook format to download
at no cost (but alas, Fabio will not be on the cover with Helen).

Next Generation Growth
at Mother Earth Farm
Maybe it’s true that the apple doesn’t fall
far from the tree. This is certainly the case
at Mother Earth Farm, where in January,
Canyon Little succeeded Carrie Little as
Farm Manager.
We are happy to welcome Canyon in his
new role, and even happier that Carrie
will stay involved with farm activities,
including caring for the 8 bee hives that
keep our produce bountiful.
Canyon spent the past two years learning the “ins and outs” of EFN’s lush,
eight-acre organic farm, which provides 150,000 pounds of produce annually to
roughly 27 food banks. These programs receive the food on the same day that
it is harvested, so hungry families and individuals in Pierce County often receive
better fruits and vegetables than the average person could purchase in the store.
Growing up, Canyon’s mom always had gardens, she was always opposed to
genetically modifi ed produce, and she taught Canyon from a young age the
importance of eating healthy and organically farmed food. The Littles settled
in Puyallup and Tacoma when Canyon was 9 years old. He attended Western
Washington University where he received a BA in Business with a concentration
in Marketing. After managing some retail stores, he went to UW-Tacoma for a
post-bach in environmental studies. When he fi nished school in 2009, he spent
time helping at Mother Earth Farm, where he had volunteered since 2001. Carrie
needed a farm assistant, and after a search, Helen McGovern, submitted Canyon’s
name to the Board.
He learned about things like soil structure, crop rotation, cover crops, drip tape
irrigation, harvesting seeds, seed germination, pruning fruit trees (thinning cuts
and leading cuts), bees, cross pollination, and more, all of which prepared him to
take over the farm when Carrie retired to work more on her family farm. Canyon
wakes early each morning to grab the 6:15 bus from Mercer Island to King Street
Station. The 6:50 Sounder Train gets him to Sumner, where he then bikes 25-35
minutes to the farm at 8am. At 4pm, he hops on his bike to return home.
Canyon says he is very optimistic about his new role at Mother Earth Farm
“because it has so much potential to have an impact on the lives of people in
need.” His goals are to increase production from 150,000 pounds of vegetables,
fruits, and honey to 200,000 pounds annually. To do this, the farm will harvest on
more days, use more volunteers, and work more closely with the Pierce County
Gleaning Project coordinator. As always, Mother Earth Farm will rely heavily on
a core of 8-10 women from the Washington Corrections Center for Women. For
years, this group has provided the core hours and skills needed to keep farm
operations going, receiving college credit for their efforts.
At EFN’s 30th Anniversary Breakfast on May 2, our community recognized Carrie
with the David P. Ottey Lifetime Achievement Award for her work at Mother Earth
Farm. She and David were a part of the farm from its roots.

That was the way it
had always been until a
meeting took place over
breakfast at a restaurant in
Bonney Lake in March of
1999. That meeting was
between Doreen Johnson
- the grandmother of an
EFN volunteer who owned
eight acres of farmland
located between Sumner
and Orting, and past EFN
Director, David Ottey.
The land in question was part of twenty acres that had been “in the family” for
more than 50 years, providing the owner’s family with vegetables during the time
Doreen grew up and also serving as a source of income from vegetables sold at
the Tacoma Market where her father dropped them off each morning on his way
to work at The News Tribune. After Doreen’s parents died, the land was split into
eight acres owned by Doreen, ten acres owned by her brother, and two acres that
were sold. For more than a decade, Doreen leased her acreage to a valley grower,
but decided that she wanted the land to do “something special” and offered to
lease it at minimal cost to provide food for those in need. Although a radical idea
in the larger emergency food community, EFN was well aware of the “seed to the
table” approach of providing low-income folks with food. A deal was cut allowing
for the project to be attempted, once two years of funding specifi c

to the project, was in hand. The funds were provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates,
Ben B. Cheney, Fuchs Foundations and Grantmaker Consultants, Inc. In 2000 the
project began.
Enter Carrie Little
In 1993, Carrie became a volunteer at the newly formed Guadalupe Gardens
urban community garden project. It was the goal of this group to provide fresh
vegetables, free of charge, to homeless and low-income people in Tacoma by
turning empty space in the economically depressed areas of that city into organic
gardens. By the end of that fi rst season, Carrie had become “the farmer in charge”
and by 1996, the project had grown from one lot to nine lots providing signifi cant
produce not only to low-income individuals but also to the community’s largest
food bank, St. Leo’s Food Connection, and largest hot meal site, The Hospitality
Kitchen.
EFN immediately sought
out Carrie Little and
offered her the daunting
task of turning the high
production, pesticideriddled
acreage into an
organic farm. Carrie,
having conquered the
task of developing
scattered urban organic
gardens, accepted the
offer of rebuilding soil
and producing food that
would go directly into the
community’s emergency
food system.
While not certifi ed,
Mother Earth Farm uses
no non-organic materials of any kind in the production of fruits and vegetables.
Since full acreage use began in 2004 (after four years of rebuilding the soil), the
farm has produced more than 1,000,000 pounds. All of this food has gone into
food banks and hot meal sites in Pierce County.
It’s not just about the food. It’s also about building community and giving
people hope.
It was Carrie’s idea to provide customers of local food banks with an annual
survey to suggest crops to plant. Based on the results of the surveys and growing
capabilities in the northwest, Carrie planned crops for the upcoming year.
It was Carrie’s efforts that developed a model program for the Washington State
Department of Corrections, bringing crews of female inmates from the Purdy
Correctional Center for Women to plant, weed, and harvest crops on a regular
basis. The success of this program led to the development of a curriculum
providing successful crew members with a certifi cate in organic farming from a
local post-secondary school. It was also Carrie who was responsible for creating
a fl ower garden at Mother Earth
Farm that was tended by a Girl
Scout Troop imade up of girls with
mothers incarcerated at Purdy.
While the mothers and daughters
were not allowed to be at the farm
at the same time, each could watch
in the development of the labors of
the other. The Girl Scouts delivered
all of the fl owers to seniors in
housing centers.
Carrie also worked to link local
school district classes with
volunteerism at the farm and to
tie that work into the curriculum of
those classes. One middle school
student, when interviewed while
weeding at Mother Earth Farm,
was asked by The News Tribune
columnist, Kathleen Merryman, how
he felt about working on the farm.
He responded by saying: “ I do
things for my family when they tell
me to, but this is different. It makes
me feel good to do something
for somebody I don’t even know.
It makes me feel like I am not just
taking up space.”
After so many years of hard work to foster a program with such a tremendous
impact, it is time for the next generation to carry on Mother Earth Farm. We wish
both Carrie and Canyon success.

hunger in the community, collect food for people in need, and play
an essential role in the fi ght against hunger. Whether it’s your child’s
school, your family’s church, your place of employment, your local Girl
Scout Troop, or any other caring group, every item and dollar you
donate to food drives makes a difference to a hungry person.
