SYNOPSIS
Clockhead sits alone, with only the clocks he
has been customising and “humanising”
for company. The woman he loves has left.
He revisits places they had been, each one
evoking new memories. Through these
flashbacks we start to see the cracks begin
to show. He has to find her so they can fix
what has been broken.
STereOSCOPIC 3d; THe MakINg
Of CLOCkHead
Clockhead is Ireland’s first short to be
shot in stereoscopic 3d, produced using
new post-production technology from the
Sigmedia research group of Trinity College
dublin. Stereoscopic 3d post-production
is a delicate art, requiring that the image
manipulations on both left and right views
are matched, and typically doubling the
effort in post. for this project, Sigmedia
developed a unique suite of software tools
for the leading post-production platform
NUke.
for many years, we in the Sigmedia
group of Trinity College dublin have been
enthused by the technology behind the
motion picture industry. Our research
efforts were rewarded in 2007 by a
technical academy award. With the rise
of stereoscopic 3d post-production, we
have been developing new ideas that will
enhance the post-production pipeline and
advance the art of stereo post-production.
This short doubles as a showcase for some
of our technologies and is part of our larger
SfI funded research programme in content
aware media processing.
of science and engineering, among them
ICT. Bold research in numerous disciplines
continues to transform the potential of ICT.
fields that have already contributed to ICT’s
following the success of her Bandytoaster
“groovy dancing girl” videos which have
amassed over 8 million views to date.
In 2009, she choreographed and performed
in her first live action short film,“Solo duet”.
dr. françois Pitié is currently a research
fellow at the Sigmedia group of Trinity
College dublin. He has extensive experience
in developing tools for post-production and
has been involved in multiple european
research projects on video restoration and
multiview cinema, including a 9-month
Marie-Curie post-doc at The foundry, the
leading company for digital post-production
software development. He holds a Ph.d. on
video segmentation under Professor anil
kokaram from the University of dublin,
anIl kOkaRaM
anil kokaram has been researching new
algorithms for visual media processing
since 1989, and is probably best known
for his work in automated film restoration.
after a long time with the Signal Processing
group at Cambridge University, he started
the Sigmedia group in Trinity College
dublin in 1998, where he is now associate
Professor in the electronic engineering
dept. Sigmedia has been “making media
useful” since then, and has published over
100 research papers in the area of digital
video processing. Since 2000, anil has
been learning from many people in the
film and broadcast industry and, in 2007,
was awarded a Science and engineering
academy award together with colleagues
at The foundry, for the use of motion in film
editing tools. In 2004, he started a small
company in the video processing space
which was acquired by google in 2011.
He hopes that this production will push
Sigmedia to continue to solve problems that
matter in the world of film creation.
