PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back to Term 4!
Our Principal Phil Halpin is currently on leave and
as a result I am in the Principal's chair for the first
three weeks of this term. Thank you for your
messages of support and kind words.
While filling Phil's shoes is a daunting task I am
enjoying the challenge. I'd like to acknowledge
Neal Reed who is currently doing a tremendous job
supporting me as Deputy Principal. If you have any
need to contact either of us during this time please
do not hesitate to call or make an appointment.
Wednesday night saw students, parents and
teachers gather in the school library to enjoy the
2012 Gilgandra High School Public Speaking
Competition. This was a fantastic evening of
entertainment. I am always amazed by the quality
of thought and preparation that our young people
display when they are given the opportunity to do
so. I'd like to acknowledge the P&C who, by
sponsoring the competition, have, once again,
shown their valued support for the quality and
range of opportunities provided for our students . I
congratulate all of the students and staff involved
and look forward to this becoming a feature of our
school calendar for years to come.
This is an important term. As well as our usual
calendar of events this term will see the conclusion
of our assessment and reporting period for second
semester. Students need to be actively preparing
themselves for the challenge of these final
assessments.
As the term progresses our staff will be marking,
finalising assessments and preparing reports. You
can support your children, grandchildren, brothers
and sisters by ensuring that they are organised and
up to date with their class and assignment work.
Similarly, providing a quiet and comfortable study
environment and setting aside time for revision
each night can have a significant impact upon
examination and assessment performance.
Needless to say regular attendance and active
participation in class are key foundations upon
which to build success.
As the weather warms up and the days get longer
the temptation to spend more time out and about
grows stronger. Rest and recreation needs to be
left until the Christmas holidays. Now is the time to
squeeze the last drops of success and
achievement from 2012.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
On Wednesday night fifteen students from Years 7
to 11 competed in the inaugural Gilgandra High
School Public Speaking Competition. With
sponsorship from the P&C, the English faculty
played host to a selection of talented speakers, their
parents and supporters.
The students spoke with authority and conviction,
making the job of the adjudicators a very difficult
one. The place-getters were: Junior Division –
Carmen LeLievre (‘Poverty’) and Kate Banks (‘2
Things you think you need to be happy’);
Intermediate Division – Emily Lummis (‘Being
grateful for what you have’) and Rachael Knowles
(‘Public Olympics’); Senior Division – Alexandra
Brisbane (‘Bullying’) and Harrison Irvin (‘Interesting
Facts’). The Public Speaking Champion Shield was
presented to Carmen LeLievre.
Thankyou to Mr Paul Proctor and Mrs Deidre
Duncan for adjudicating on the night.

IMMUNISATIONS
Next Tuesday 16 th October vaccinations will be
given at school. For Year 7 boys, the second Hep B
vaccination will be conducted. For Year 7 girls, the
second Hep B and third Gardasil vaccination will be
conducted. The Chicken Pox vaccine will also be
offered as a catch-up for those who need it. For
Year 10 students who were not present in June,
Boosterix will be conducted. The vaccinations will
occur between 9am and midday.
YEAR 12
On Thursday 20 September we held our 2012
Graduation Dinner for Year 12 students.

all Year 12 students every success as they
prepare for their upcoming Higher School
Certificate exams.
ATTENDANCE TERM 4, 2012
With the removal of School Certificate tests and
introduction of the Record of School Achievement
in 2012, all students excepting those undertaking
Higher School Certificate will be required to
attend school up until the last day of teaching.
As school staff are involved in school
development days at the end of Term 4 in 2012,
all students are required to be in attendance until
the third last day of Term 4, Wednesday 19
December 2012. Prior to this date, programs for
students in all year groups should be based upon
the achievement of outcomes as appropriate to
curriculum and syllabus requirements.
Where parents are seeking permission for their
child not to be at school for a period of time the
matter should be dealt with using the Exemption
f r o m S c h o o l - P r o c e d u r e s .
