Access Gateway (AGW)
The Access Gateway (AGW) provides an interface to the NGN for PSTN interfaces
like analog line circuits, Basic Rate Interface (BRI), Primary Rate Interface (PRI),
and non-Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) PBX trunks, and digital loop
carrier. The AGW interface performs the same type of user information stream
processing functions as the TGW. In addition, it performs Call Associated Signaling
(CAS) management functions, notifying the CCA of changes in access line signaling
state, playing tones and announcements, and applying signaling towards the PSTN
endpoint.

Network Mediation Gateway (NMGW)
The Network Mediation Gateway (NMGW) is the interface point between packetbased
Access Networks and the NGN Core Network. It provides interworking
functions to mediate any differences in transport, signaling, and Quality of Service
(QoS) mechanisms between the Access Network and the Core Network. NMGW
functions include network protection and security, connection management, traffic
management and aggregation, and generation of tones and announcements on
behalf of Customer Gateways. Several Customer Gateways access the NGN through
an NMGW.
