distinguished graduate of the year award
Daniel G. Yankelovich ’42
Like the 52 Distinguished Graduate
awardees that came before him, Daniel G.
Yankelovich ’42 has brought honor and
pride to Alma Mater with his contributions
to society. If you’ve ever wondered what
other people are really thinking, then
you’ve got something in common with
this year’s recipient. Yankelovich has
made a long and influential career based
on people’s opinions. His more than 40
years as a leading social science researcher
has meant that countless people across the
country and the world have read and relied
upon the results of his polls and analysis.
After his time at Alma Mater, Yankelovich
went to Harvard, for both undergraduate
and graduate studies. He followed that up
with post-graduate work at the Sorbonne.
He went on to teach at prominent schools,
such as Harvard’s kennedy School of
Government, Tufts, nYu, the new School
for Social Research, uC Irvine and uC
San Diego, where he is currently a visiting
scholar in the social sciences.
The roster of companies that he has
founded or directed is just as impressive.
In 1958, Yankelovich founded the research
firm Yankelovich, Skelly and White. It
was his creation of the new York Times/
Yankelovich Poll in the 1970s, a regular
staple in the newspaper which ultimately
became the new York Times/CBS Poll,
that brought national name recognition.
He also founded Public Agenda in 1975, a
public policy think tank in new York that
recently introduced the “Anxiety Index,”
which reflects the public’s comfort level
with the u.S. position in the rest of the
world. Yankelovich founded his most
recent firm, Viewpoint Learning, in 1999.
It focuses on business and public policy
and conducts dialogues on corporate
trust equity, health care, environmental
sustainability, federal budget priorities
and more. He currently contributes as
a member of the advisory board to the
Blackstone Group/Toyota and as a trustee
of the uCSD Foundation and the Concord
Coalition. He is a long-standing member
of the Council on Foreign Relations,
and many people the world over have read
his byline on a number of articles in
Foreign Affairs.
named by PR Week as one of the 10 most
influential people of the past century in the
arena of public affairs, communications
and public relations, Yankelovich is the
director emeritus of CBS, uSWEST, the
Meredith Corporation, Loral Space and
Communications, Diversified Energies and
ARkLA, and trustee emeritus of Brown
university, the kettering Foundation and
the Educational Testing Service (ETS),
where he also served as chairman.
He has credited his BLS education with
providing him the solid foundation
for rigorous study that he has relied on
through so many achievements. This
