Going, going, gone
One of the largest eyesores in Chalvey
has gone – as part of a multi-million
pound regeneration scheme for the area.
The old Chalvey Play Centre, derelict for many
years was demolished in May, opening up
views of the recreation ground.
The site, which had become a magnet for antisocial
behaviour, has now been completely
cleared and there is a clear view from Chalvey
High Street to the brand new early years
centre.
The Chalvey Early Years centre opened in
January in part of the old Thames Valley
Community Centre and has been completely
refurbished.
Refurbishment work on the other half of
Thames Valley Community Centre is also well
underway with the community building
expected to open to the public in August 2011.
John Rice, assistant director of environment and
regeneration, said: “The demolition of the old
play centre is just one part of the regeneration
of the Chalvey area.
“Chalvey is being transformed in front of
people’s eyes and it is looking very positive for
the future.”
As well as spaces for community groups, the
new community centre will be a place where
everyone will be able to meet and feel at home.
It will include:
• a self service library with access to books and
information from across the borough
• improved adult and family learning facilities
and IT suite
• a relaxed meeting area and refreshment
facilities
• a large hall for community events with a
kitchen
Andrew Stevens, assistant director of culture
and skills, said: “With the new early years
centre and the new community centre opening
soon, residents are seeing major changes in
their neighbourhood.
“We are also encouraging local ownership of
the new facilities through involving the local
community at each stage of the
redevelopment.”
Children are already enjoying the benefits of the regeneration with the early years centre which opened in January
Heart of Slough
All aboard…Slough’s new bus
station opens for business
Slough’s iconic new bus station opened to
residents in May and the word on the
street is local people love the modern
new design. Taking 11 months to build,
the station forms part of the visionary
£450 million Heart of Slough project to
revitalise the town centre.
The facilities in the new bus station include a
café, newsagent and waiting areas, together
with offices for the bus operators.
Designed by Matthew Bedward, of Bblur
architecture, the form of the building comes
from the idea of different wavelengths of light
inspired by Slough’s famous astronomer,
William Herschel, and his renowned infra-red
experiment. The building is clad in aluminium
panels which create a softly textured metallic
surface which will change character with the
varying light conditions.
The innovative bus station design provides a
landmark building in the transport hub area of
the Heart of Slough project. The same architects
are also designing other public areas ensuring
a harmonious style which will lead people from
Citizen captured the bus station just days before it was completed last weekend
the bus and railway stations into the town
centre.
Demolition of the old bus station will continue
in June.
Citizen asked people on the street what they
thought of the new bus station now it is
complete. Below are some of their
comments.
“It’s certainly different, it’s not what you expect
a bus station to look like”, said Kim from
Langley.
“It’s certainly impressive, especially when you
get close up”, said Kiran from Cippenham.
“It looks like a snake with a big head”, said five
year old Luca from Colnbrook.
“It looks very futuristic and that’s good, I like
the fact that Slough is choosing unusual
designs to build, it means we are moving
forward”, said Shazia from Britwell.
“I was a little unsure about it when it first
started being built but now that it is finished it
looks great, very unusual”, said Surinder from
central Slough.
The winner is
…The Curve
Slough residents have voted to call the Heart
of Slough’s new library and cultural centre
The Curve.
At the end of last year Slough Borough
Council asked residents to suggest names for
the new facility. From around 100 names put
forward, three were shortlisted and the
council once again called on residents to
vote for their favourite name - The Curve, The
Wave or The Pulse. The Curve was a clear
winner with the public, followed by The Pulse
and The Wave.
Forming part of the Heart of Slough
development, The Curve will house a new
library, learning facilities for adults, a café
and a cultural centre. Slough Museum will
also be part of the new facility when it
opens. The Curve will let visitors use the
library service, engage in study, relax in the
café, attend performances, engage in public
debate and visit exhibitions.
Residents have been able to choose not only
the name but also tell the council what
facilities and services they wish to see in the
new building. Consultation with local people
revealed that study spaces, a café for
meeting friends, a greater range of books
and a warm relaxing environment were just
some of the things residents wanted to see
in The Curve.
Building work on the new library and culture
centre is due to start in 2012 and should be
completed in 2013. The existing town centre
library will continue to operate as normal
until The Curve opens.

Pathway to colour
A newly created wall on Britwell has been
transformed into a bright and welcoming
mural thanks to Slough Borough Council
and local young people.
Working with artist Spencer Lowe, young
people designed and created the new mural
which runs the length of the pathway between
Monksfield Way and Wentworth Avenue.
Twenty-eight young people took part in art
workshops to help come up with ideas and
sketch books were distributed across the estate
so local people could add their ideas.
Another brick on the wall - the mural created by local young people
Inspiration was taken from the local area, the
landscape and the activities the young people
take part in - including the airport, the trading
estate, football and music.
Now, 42 metres of wall, split into 24 panels,
have been stencilled with more than 1,000
squares.
Vinay Vyas, community safety project officer,
said: “By working with the council and Spencer,
local young people have made a really positive
contribution to the local area.
“When we put the wall up, it was assumed local
young people would take the decoration into
Could you help school children get to class
safely?
Lollypop ladies - or to use the official title
School Crossing Patrol Officers - are needed
across the borough to help children get to
school without having to dodge the traffic.
Crossing patrols are required at Elmshott
Lane, Cippenham, Trelawney Avenue, Langley
and Long Furlong Drive, Britwell in the
mornings and afternoons, during school term
time only. The hours will be around six hours
per week.
You will need basic road awareness, be able to
work on your own and use initiative and ideally
have a basic first aid qualification.
In return, a full uniform and training will be
their own hands with graffiti and tags, but
instead it is now a colourful and bright mural.
“Everyone who has come past has made
positive comments about it, and I think it helps
brighten up the pathway and helps people feel
less concerned about using it.”
He added: “The final panel of the wall says
‘Made in Britwell’ because it certainly was, and
has left a lasting image local people can be
proud of.”
The work on the pathway wall was run by
Slough Borough Council with funding from the
BAA Heathrow Community Fund.
provided - and there is, of course, the
adoration and smiles from the children.
Britwell regeneration starts
here and now
The regeneration of Britwell has started
with the installation of 67 metre
hoardings around the site for the new
community hub.
And, with help from the local neighbourhood
board, the council’s cabinet were set to make a
decision on a designer and contractor for the
new building.
Plans for the community hub include:
• a new Britwell Library
• a new Britwell MyCouncil
• adult education facilities
• a crèche
• a training kitchen
• a café
• community meeting rooms
• outside spaces, including outdoor reading
areas
Residents of the Wentworth Avenue flats have
also been given the good news that they will
be moved out sooner rather than later, as three
pieces of council-owned land in the area are to
be used for housing.
The Jolly Londoner and the old library and
garage site on Wentworth Avenue and the site
of the old Newbeech House on Long Readings
Lane, will be freed up for new social housing.
Together, the sites will provide around 33
homes and building could start as early as
November this year.
The housing will be made available, on a prior
consideration basis and under the usual
property size to family ratios, to the current
residents of the flats.
John Rice, assistant director environment and
regeneration, said: “The Britwell regeneration
is moving very quickly and with the hoardings
going up, residents have the first major sign of
the physical part of the project beginning.
“A contractor will be chosen who will make the
idea of a community hub become a reality and
plans are already in place for new housing.
“One of the main issues we have heard, from
talking to residents, is the wish to have the
Wentworth Avenue flats emptied and
demolished as soon as possible.
“By freeing up these parcels of land for social
housing, we can move the tenants out of the
awful block of flats and into brand new homes
sooner than we originally thought.
“The tenants of these flats have been living in
unsuitable conditions for too long and they
asked us to make the flats one of our first
priorities.
“This shows our commitment to do as we
promised, which is moving the tenants to
better accommodation and getting rid of the
flats once and for all.”

The Britwell board
The Britwell neighbourhood board has been
created to represent local residents and help
the council make decisions as part of the
regeneration project.
The Britwell board mirrors other similar
boards in Manor Park, Colnbrook and Chalvey
and will work with the council and other
organisations and agencies in Britwell.
In May, they had the chance to see ideas from
three companies bidding to be the ones
chosen for the new community hub.
After the three presentations, everyone on
the board got the chance to ask questions
before rating and ranking the options and
choosing which one they preferred overall.
That information, including the comments
made and any questions asked, was fed back
to the council’s cabinet before they made the
final decision.
Tracy Lightfoot, a resident of Britwell for more
than 40 years, and a member of the new
board, said: “Seeing the presentations was
really good, they really opened my eyes.
“The project is further forward than I thought
it would be, and I would like to see residents
involved more but I see my role as ensuring
the community is at the heart of the centre
and it is what they need and want.”
Yvonne Roles is also part of the board. She
said: “I am quite excited. This is the first time
we have been included in anything like this
and getting the chance to have our say on
which design we like the best, is very good.
“Regeneration on Britwell is something that
has been talked about for years and I am
really pleased something is finally
happening.”
Darren Morris, a Britwell resident for several
years and another member of the new board
shared Yvonne’s excitement.
He said: “It is a very exciting time for
residents as we can really influence what is
happening in our area.
“It is important our voices are heard and that
what we think and the opinions we give now
and in the future translates into how the new
hub will look and feel.”
The shop is
open for
business
The Britwell regeneration shop will be open
at regular times from now on so local
residents can pop down and have a chat
with the council officers involved in the
regeneration.
The shop will be open twice a month on
Wednesdays, during the day for one session
and in the evening for the second session.
The sessions are:
• Wednesday 8 June - 12noon to 1.30pm
• Wednesday 22 June - 5 to 6.30pm
• Wednesday 6 July - 12noon to 1.30pm
• Wednesday 20 July - 5 to 6.30pm
• Wednesday 3 August - 12noon to 1.30pm
Citizen of the Year -
Martin has been a volunteer and all round
‘Roped in’ back in the day when the legendary
former Mayor George Brooker ran the trust,
Martin has become one of the pillars of the
organisation, doing everything from being a
handyman to running evening and weekend
activities for members of the Slough and
District Sports Association for the Disabled
(SADSAD) which is part of the trust.
After receiving his award, Martin, who is
known for his modesty and his tendency to
shun the limelight, said: “I am humbled. It is a
nice thing, a really nice thing to receive.
“There is a small band of people who run the
club, it isn’t just me, and they all deserve
recognition.
“We are all committed to helping people with
disabilities and keeping the club going.
“I got involved in the club when my kids were
but now everyone is enjoying themselves,
having a dance and lots of fun.”
Martin’s wife Moira, who Martin admits has
been volunteering with him throughout, said:
“Martin always wants to play old music but we
make sure there is some modern music in there
too. The young people don’t want to listen to
old people’s music all the time!
She added: “I don’t understand how some
people don’t want to be, or can’t be around
people with disabilities.
“We get so much out of it, so much enjoyment
and that is why we have been taking part for
good.”

New education
programme
to help people with
type 2 diabetes
A new, interactive education
programme for people who have been
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for
more than one year starts this month.
Diabetes Education & Awareness for Life
(DEAL) PLUS is a group education
programme run by the NHS Diabetes service
in east Berkshire and builds upon the
service’s existing DEAL Education
programme.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when not enough
insulin is produced by the body for it to
function properly, or when the body’s cells
do not react to insulin (known as insulin
resistance).
Around 90 percent of all adults in the UK
with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
The programme will consist of six hours of
education split into two sessions. The first
session will be facilitated by a diabetes
Council tax scam warning
Slough Borough Council’s trading standards
team is warning residents to be on their guard
for a council tax scam after a resident gave her
bank details to con artists over the phone.
The resident was called by someone claiming to
be from the council tax department of the local
authority, offering her a refund if she gave
them her financial details.
Unfortunately, the lady did give her bank
details and, of course, there has been no
refund.
www.slough.gov.uk
specialist nurse and the second by a
diabetes specialist dietician.
Claire Rowell, senior diabetes specialist
nurse and education lead explains: “We’ve
developed the DEAL PLUS programme to
enable people with type 2 diabetes to take
control and develop their knowledge of the
condition, medications and the right diet for
them further, whilst having the support of
healthcare professionals and the other
group members to set personal goals.
“This will help them to improve glycaemic
control and quality of life.”
The sessions will run at the Diabetes Centre,
King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor on
consecutive Thursday mornings from
9.30am to 12.30pm.
People who have been diagnosed with type
2 diabetes for more than one year can book
by contacting Anne Debowy, diabetes
education coordinator on 01753 636370.
The council has had previous calls about this
scam over the past year.
Angela Satterly, from Slough’s trading
standards, said: “The council will never cold call
someone like this and ask for bank details,
whether to do with council tax or not.
“This type of deception is worrying, and
reinforces the fact we all have to be protective
of our personal information.
“Whenever you receive a phone call, always ask
yourself if the information you give could be
June 2011 Slough citizen
used by someone else, and if the answer is yes,
you should think carefully before passing it
over.
“Don’t feel pressured into giving information
over the phone. You can always hang up, and
call the person back, so in this case you could
check with the council to be 100 percent sure
whether the request is genuine or not.”
Anyone wanting to contact trading standards
should call 01753 875255.

Tackling climate change
in Slough
Slough Forward - the town’s local
strategic partnership - has, this week,
released its climate change strategy.
The strategy sets out a range of measure
designed to help everyone reduce the
borough’s carbon footprint and sets out actions
to help the borough cope with predicted
climate change.
The council is also doing its bit with targets for
lowering emissions and there are proposals on
encouraging residents and business to take
part.
The strategy was developed over a 12 month
period in full consultation with members, key
partners, council employees, stakeholders and
residents.
Councillor Satpal Parmar, commissioner for
environment and open spaces, said: “Our aim is
to reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent across
council operations by 2014.
“This is a challenging but achievable target and
necessary if Slough wants to show leadership in
meeting the global climate change challenge.”
You can find full and condensed versions of the
strategy on the council’s website at
www.slough.gov.uk.
Bike in the borough? Join us.
Local cyclists are being invited to be part of a
brand new forum where they can get involved
in all issues around biking in Slough.
Slough Borough Council’s transport team want
to connect with the borough’s cyclists to find
out their ideas on new cycle routes, cycling
provision in Slough and any problems with
biking in the borough.
Regular meetings will be held and cycling
experts and people from the industry will be
invited as well.
Savio De Cruz, team leader from the council
transport team and Andrew Allen from the
June 2011 Slough citizen
Cycling Touring Club (CTC), said: “We want to
get local cyclists together in an informal
setting so we can talk to them about how to
improve and promote cycling in Slough.
“We want to get more people involved with
cycling in Slough and the best people to talk
to about that are residents who already do it.”
The first meeting will be held on Tuesday 21
June from 7 to 8.30pm in the Bentley
Education Centre, Herschel Park.
For more information contact Andrew Allen
citizen June 2011 Slough www.slough.gov.uk SAFER COMMUNITIES 15
And the ball is in the air
Summer is here and soon so will the
school holidays.
Children everywhere, in the parks, at the shops,
on the street - everywhere but in school.
To some, a blissful six weeks of enjoyment,
playing and having fun, but to others the onset
of noise, inconsiderate behaviour and endless
ball games.
Esther Deacon, community safety project
officer, said: “With the onset of the warmer
weather and longer daylight hours, children
and young people tend to play outside for
longer.
“And open windows and doors mean it is more
likely people can hear what is happening
outside their homes.
“People sometimes complain to us about ball
games being played in unsuitable areas -
perhaps too close to houses, parked cars or
roads; children and young people making too
much noise, too late and when approached
they either ignore it or are abusive.
“And then on the other hand, children and their
parents sometimes complain they should be
able to play near their own homes.
“There needs to be a balance between those
who want to enjoy peace and quiet in their
homes and neighbourhoods, and the need for
children and young people to play safely and
enjoy the neighbourhood they live in.”
She added: “The playing of ball games is not
against the law.
“We take a neutral, balanced view on the issue
of ball games and expect residents to take
responsibility within their own neighbourhood
and work together to reach a compromise.
“However, in extreme cases of deliberate
nuisance we may use our powers to intervene.
“We hope that a renewed level of respect
prevents further action being taken.”
Report anti-social behaviour
If you do need to report serious nuisance
caused by ball games please contact:
• Thames Valley Police non-emergency
line on 0845 8 505 505 or
• Slough Borough Council’s anti-social
behaviour hotline on 01753 875298.
To help residents, the community safety
team has offered the following top tips:
For residents
Residents should keep the following in
mind:
• Children and young people will want to
be active and play near to their home.
• Within reason there will be some noise
generated by children playing, especially
after school, evenings and weekends.
• In some neighbourhoods there may be a
limited number of grassed areas for
children to play.
• It is better for children to be active than
not.
• Talk to your neighbours if you think it is
becoming an issue. Be considerate of their
opinions and needs. Try and reach a
compromise on what is acceptable.
• Whilst the playing of ball games is not
generally a matter for the police, if
criminal damage is caused to your
property as a result, or you are verbally
abused, you are encouraged to report this
to the police and obtain a reference
number.
For parents, children and young people
Children and their parents should:
• Respect others’ right to have a safe and
peaceful environment.
• Ensure that children make every attempt
to prevent balls hitting someone else’s
house or property and use a soft ball.
• Keep the noise down and keep control of
the ball - don’t let your play become antisocial.
• Avoid playing ball games after dark.
• Do not use foul and abusive language.
• Remember roads and garage blocks are
not for playing on; be aware of road
traffic for your own safety.
• Older children and young people should
use the parks and larger play areas.
• Parents - consider taking children to the
park and play areas, perhaps share this
responsibility with other parents.
