Intelligent Temperature Protection 

• To protect the driver from overheating but prevent lamps 

will extinguish a new protection has been integrated called 

“Temperature Protection”. 

• In case the temperature exceeds T case + 10 degrees the 

lamps will be dimmed to the minimum level. Result will be 

that temperature in the luminaire will be lowered and 

power-losses will be reduced. 

• To limit unnecessary cycling a hysteresis is build in the 

driver. Temperature needs to be lowered to a certain level 

before the driver will switch back to the nominal value. 



Programmable 

The DynaVision Product family is programmable via DALI commands. If offers 

maximum flexibility and opportunities to reduce stocks (through the option of 

changing the lamp configuration on the driver)

possible now using:

b. the DynaVision PC tool 

� The DynaVision PC tool can be used to

Frequently asked questions (1/3) 

Xtreme Gears - General Questions 

• Can I replace fixed output with DALI drivers? 

– Yes, the dimension and thermal behaviour is similar with fixed output of Lumistep. 

• Can I use CosmoPolis 45W with DALI? 

– Begin 2011 a specific dimmable 45W system will be introduced, lamp will be dimmable to 30W 

(=66%) 

• Can I use DALI drivers together with a Dynadimmer? 

– This is not needed, the new drivers have an integrated programmable Dynadimmer. Special 

PC-tool tool is needed to enable and program this feature. 

• Can I use it together with an SDU to dim via a pilot-line? 

– This not needed, the new DALI drivers can be controlled directly by the pilot line. Just connect 

phase-Neutral directly on the DALI to dim. These DALI lines are fully sdurge protected 

(10kV/5kA) 

• Are DALI drivers available without the Xtreme Surge Protection? 

– No, DALI drivers are only available with the Xtreme surge protection, es indicated also the 

DALI lines have this Xtreme lightning protection. 

• When should I choose for Surge Protection? 

– Surge protection is always advised, in some circumstances the startXtreme may be use (see 

selection tree) 

• Other suppliers also claim the 10kV protection; what is the difference? 

– The difference with Philips Xtreme is the high sustainable current (5kA) in the protection circuit 

to prevent internal components will be damaged at lightning strokes. 




• How is lifetime of Philips drivers specified? 

– The Xtreme lifetime of 80.000 hours is specified as operation hours at continuous worst case 

conditions such as maximum Tcase temperature (80°C), low mains voltage (198V) and low lamp 

voltage (85V). Competition gear’s lifetime is normally specified at nominal conditions and is 

limited to 50 or 60.000 hours. 

• Can the lamp start in a dimmed mode? 

– Yes, Philips calls this feature “Adjustable Power Output” and can be set via the DALI input. 

Special configuration software will be needed. 

• Will also a 1-10V interface be available? 

– No, the 1-10V functionality will not be supported anymore because most functions are now 

integrated (SDU, Dynadimmer). For replacement old driver we recommend to remove the 

additional components or replace 1-10V unit for a DALI version. 

• Is the behavior of the DALI version same as the existing Xtreme versions 

– Yes, temperature and EMI behavior is similar with fixed output and LumiStep 

• What does designed for 100ppm mean? 

– Design and manufacturing is set-up for maximum 100 pcs per year returned from the field out of 

one million products sold. This extreme reliability has been achieved by Philips long time 

experience in outdoor lighting during design and our quality testing procedures. Actual 

performance so far is confirming this performance. 




• Where to get the DALI command set? 

– DALI standards have to be requested at DALI consortium (www.dali-ag.org). 

• Will it work with other DALI systems than Philips Starsense? 

– All components that make use of standard DALI are able to control the DynaVision DALI Xtreme 

gear 

• Are there private DALI commands? 

– Philips has integrated private commands via so-called memory banks, these commands are for 

Philips use only since they are not supported by international norms. Philips could change the 

commands over time. 

• Where can I found more information 

– On the internet further information can be found on our OEM webpage: www.philips.com/oem 

• How can I set/read DALI? 

– Any DALI controller can be used to read or set DALI parameters. Philips will release a software 

package that will work with several DALI interface modules. If needed your local Philips contact 

will be able to help you.

Feature description 

1-10V: 

Analog input for electronic driver, 10V or open is 100%. 0-1V is minimum value of light (level is depending on lamp type) 

Benefits: Simple dimming interface 

Lumistep: 

Pre-programmed dimming sequence controlled by switching on/off. Three different timing available 6, 8 and 10 hours 

dimming. Dimming level is fixed on 60% (power) 

Benefits: Simple dimming without external control, timing determined by on/off cycle (last 3 nights) 

DALI: 

Universal Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. 

Defined in standard EN62386, all Xtreme drivers are supporting part 101, 102 and 203 

Benefits: Digital universal dimming interface to communicate with DALI compliant control systems 

LineSwitch: 

Interface for easy dimming via pilot-line or external sensor (presence) 

Dimming to preset-level (default 60%) can be controlled by applying directly a 208-277V between DALI lines
