Note from the Principal
Semester 2
Term 3 - Friday 24 August 2012
Dear parents and carers
Welcome back to semester 2. This is a very busy term for all Year 12s who
are now close to the end of their schooling. Year 10s and 11s are now well
into their new subjects for this semester. We have already held our parent
teacher evening for Year 12 students and this enabled teachers to provide
timely advice to parents about student progress. Year 12s have also had
presentations on Goal Setting and Time Management, Managing Stress
and Increasing Confidence, Health and Well Being. Students have been offered the
opportunity to participate in more detailed workshops related to these topics.
Thank you to parents who attended our Years 10 and 11 Awards presentations. It was with
great pleasure that we presented students with certificates recognising their academic
achievement and effort for semester 1. Thank you also to parents and students who completed
our school perception survey. We are in the process of analysing data from the feedback
you provided.
I would like to welcome Tim Burch, Nerida Henschell, Yoko Yonezawa, Cassandra Dodd,
Megan Parry, Kathy Guy, Sarah Dilley and Rebecca Hooper to the teaching and support staff
of the College. This semester we have three exchange students from Germany who are here
from 6 weeks to 12 months. Thank you to the host families for supporting this program.
Welcome also to new parents and students who have joined the College this semester.
Next year, Casuarina Senior College will be the host school for the new Sports Education
Development Australia (SEDA) program. The program will be open to all Year 11 and 12
students in the Darwin region and will be based off site. Students accepted into the program
will be studying for a Certificate II and III in Sport and Recreation which contributes to completion
of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education. Further information about SEDA can
be viewed at www.sedagroup.com.au
This week also has our talented Dance students performing Gurramatji at Festival Park for
the Darwin Festival. Our students have been selected to perform this work which is a modern
day Swan Lake Story. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. Performances are free and are on at
6pm Tues 21st – Thurs 23rd August, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August. Also this week
is our CSCs Talent Quest where students will be performing for the school to showcase their
performance abilities. Our next newsletter will feature winners of the different categories.
Another event for your calendar is the Year 12 Drama performance Dark Matters which is
being held at Brown’s Mart on 5th and 6th September. The Year 12 Drama class are
performing excerpts from five contemporary Australian writers. Tickets will be sold at the door
each night for $10. Come along and support our students who have been working hard for
this production.
I look forward to seeing you at one of our students’ performances or at the Years 10 and 11
Parent Teacher evening on 11th October 5 – 7pm.
What’s been happening at CSC
Casuarina Senior College (CSC)
students and Voyage band worked
together to raise awareness and
funds for Youth Cancer.
Students in the Year 11 Personal Learning Plan (PLP)
organised a lunchtime activity as part of an assignment on
citizenship. Entry fee was $2 or a used mobile phone with
all proceeds going to Youth Cancer. CSC band Voyage and
other music students performed. The students raised $100
and collected a few mobile phones. They are collecting used
phones until the end of term with collection boxes supplied
by Youth Cancer located around the school.
CementFiz
Clontarf
We are pleased to announce that on Monday afternoon
the Clontarf Year 10 group successfully raised $1000 in an
hour for the Cancer Council.
The students were assisted on the day by our long term
and valued partners Cridlands. Staff from Cridlands helped
the two Clontarf teams compete at separate locations
(Smith St Mall and Mitchell Centre) in a head to head contest
to see which team could raise the most money in one
hour. Students were amazing ambassadors for both CSC
and Clontarf, with many bystanders commenting on the
outstanding conduct of the students. A special mention to
Peta Butler from Cridlands and our very own Mark Brown
for organising such a fun event!
On the 15th June 2012 six students from CSC presented a
piece of very well received physical theatre in the Chamber
Crescent theatre in Malak. This piece focused on the subject
of teen suicide as this is a major issue in the NT and students
felt that they should try to reach out to those experiencing feelings
around this subject. The students along with Linzi Adams
and April Yeo worked outside of school time to devise a piece
of original work that told the story of one boy’s struggle with
suicide. This is the first production of a new company that is
being formed called CementFiz. This company focuses on
using physical theatre to explore issues that are important to
young people in the NT and is supported by DCA.
Anyone interested in becoming part of the company should
contact LInzi Adams or April Yeo.

Turtle Times on Bare
Sand Island
Seven CSC students embarked on an
unforgettable adventure that involved
experiencing turtle research first-hand. They
joined Dr Michael Guinea from CDU on Bare
Sand Island to help with beach patrols at night,
tagging and measuring of turtles, monitoring
nests and releasing hatchlings. At night
students came up close and personal with female
flatback turtles laying their eggs on the beach.
Students were also involved in caring for
hatchlings and releasing them into the sea.
It has to be said that turtle hatchlings are
extremely cute and so the excitement was great
when the first hatchlings were poking their heads
out of the sand. But it was not only the turtle side
of things that was very popular amongst the turtle
team. Swimming with hatchlings, mud bathing,
fishing and relaxing with a book were some of the
favourite pastimes. This was the first time that
CSC was able to become involved in the project,
and it is hoped that we will be able to put this
turtle trip on the annual CSC calendar.
Casuarina Senior College hosts International Exchange
Students from Germany during Semester Two 2012
This semester we have been fortunate to be hosting exchange students from Germany Europe.
Adrian Beck and Viktoria Steingass are in Darwin for six weeks. They arrived at the beginning of
the term and will leave on 4 September.
Other International students at school are: Sophia Rommel, Deborah Diemer and Devden
Balapitiya (Sri Lanka).
The students have come to Darwin to experience the Australian everyday life, discovering new
people, situations and attending school as well as enjoying a cultural experience and
improving their English language skills. International learning and knowledge propels students
towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community
perspectives both from the host group and the visitors. They attend classes at year 10 & 11
level. They should be applauded for attending school during their holiday time in Germany.
Hello from the SRC
SRC
The SRC is on fire. Last term was tremendous. We would like to thank all those who
supported us on our journey. A special thanks to Dr Chris Burn MLA our local member
for Johnston who provided us with 2 tickets to Bass in the Grass. Those tickets were
used as prizes for a raffle and raised money for the SRC. We also organised the
Biggest Morning Tea for teachers, staff and students for the Cancer Council. A big
thank you to all staff and students for their amazing participation during this event. On
the 28th of May, we were privileged to welcome United Nations Youth
Representatives, as he travels around the country to hear issues that affect youths
both locally and nationally. This was an amazing opportunity for the students of CSC
to express their concerns and to learn more about the United Nations.
Darcey Cowan – Certificate II in Business
Hi my name is Darcey Cowan and I recently completed the
Certificate II in Business through the International College of
Advanced Education. My main focus in completing this certificate
was to learn new skills in the Admin/Reception area of work. My
duties included telephone duties and message taking, handling
customer enquiries, kitchen duties, preparing for meetings and completing 12 work
booklets. I really enjoyed completing this certificate as I got to meet a lot of new and
interesting people, especially the hospitality students who were also at my workplace
completing their certificates. I had a lot of support from my trainer and work mates
and learnt many new skills which I hope to use in future employment. I would
thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in the business area
of employment.
Northern Territory Indigenous Women’s Rugby
League Team
Pauline Schober has been coaching rugby league for 5 years, and this year will
coach the Northern Territory Indigenous Women’s Rugby League Team (Territory
Ochres) in the National Arthur Beetson Murri Rugby League Competition in Ipswich
at the end of September. This is Pauline’s second year of coaching the NT
Indigenous women’s team. Last year the competition was held at the Gold Coast
and NT came 5th out of the 12 women’s team, not a bad effort for the first season of
women’s rugby league in the Northern Territory. This year our goal is to finish in the
top 3.
This competition is also an opportunity for our Territory female players to be
assessed by the National Indigenous AllStars selectors and the Australian Jillaroo’s
selectors. Two Casuarina Senior College students, Nathalia Wauchope and Donica
Sarikon, have been selected to represent and play in the Northern Territory team.
Last year Nathalia Wauchope was selected in the National Indigenous AllStars
squad and was also invited to join the Junior’s to Jillaroo’s program with the
Australian Women’s Rugby League (AWRL).
Pauline was also appointed Head Coach for the NT Titan’s Women’s Rugby League
team.
Sport
The following CSC students were chosen to attend the Northern Territory Indigenous U16
Championships at the Tallebudgera Active Recreation Centre, Gold Coast 11 to 13 August.
