Dear GHC-SCW Members,
On May 12, 2011, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin
(GHC-SCW) held our 35th Annual Meeting at the Concourse Hotel in Madison.
Thank you to members who were able to attend and have your voices heard.
In case you missed it, a handful of staff from the leadership team and myself gave an
overview of the accomplishments of GHC-SCW in 2010. During the annual meeting,
Ken Machtan, GHC-SCW Board President, presided over the Open Forum to answer
questions and hear ideas from members in attendance. As usual, hearing directly
from GHC-SCW members is one of the fundamental principles of a non profit cooperative, and it is always
beneficial to the organization to explore areas of improvement based on member feedback. This practice is one
of the characteristics that make GHC-SCW unique.
Next, GHC-SCW Board Treasurer, Michael Mullee, gave a review of our strong financial health.
Mr. Mullee summarized his presentation by indicating that GHC-SCW was able to increase membership
by 2.8% in 2010, which resulted in a year end membership of 64,474 members. After Mr.
Mullee’s presentation, Medical Director, Michael Ostrov, M.D. and Chief of Staff, Mark Huth, M.D.
both shared their updates in primary care. Their updates included information about the results of our patient
satisfaction surveys, improvements to our patient transition and continuity of care, and ways in which we use
medical resources wisely.
Lastly, I had the chance to present highlights from 2010. As always, it was great to see the familiar faces of
those who have attended these meetings for many years, along with the new faces in the crowd. I covered
the community involvement of GHC-SCW, which is an area I am particularly proud of and is one of our
common values we support with enthusiasm. I focused on our commitment to providing care to needy
students in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). GHC-SCW recently received
recognition from MMSD for being a leader in the community in providing care to disadvantaged students
You cannot have an annual meeting without a Board election and members voted for Board candidates to fill
open positions for the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Ken Machtan, Michael “Mick” Mullee,
and Mary Wright for their re-election to the GHC-SCW Board!
Thank you again for making your voice heard at our Cooperative’s Annual Meeting. It is our desire to be
able to continue to service both your insurance and medical service needs well into the future.
Sincerely,
Larry Zanoni
in Urgent Care
If you have ever been treated in an Urgent Care Clinic, you have
seen physicians and nurses working to evaluate and treat patients.
If you seek services at the GHC-SCW Urgent Care Clinic
late this summer, you might be surprised to find that Physical
Therapists have been added to the Urgent Care team.
Putting Physical Therapy services in emergency rooms is an
emerging trend among hospitals across the country. GHC-SCW
would like to go one step further to be one of the first health care
organizations in the area to bring Physical Therapy to Urgent
Care.
GHC-SCW Manager
of Physical and
Occupational Therapy
(PT/OT), Diane
Harlowe, is very
excited about the
possibility of GHC-SCW
being the first health
care organization to
implement this
innovative program.
“I love to be on the
cutting edge. To get to a point where you can launch into
something that’s an improvement in care is really exciting,”
she remarked.
When patients call for an Urgent Care appointment, the pilot
program would create a direct path to a Physical Therapist in the
GHC-SCW Urgent Care PT/OT Clinic, a concept that is not
currently practiced. The pilot program will also help GHC-SCW
determine in what way this new approach has the potential to
improve patient care and see if it can be set up to reduce costs by
decreasing duplication of services.
“This is about efficient access to care for our patients. It’s
about getting the care you need when you need it,” Harlowe
added.
Through an internal study, GHC-SCW staff discovered that
1 in 5 patients came to the GHC-SCW Urgent Care Clinic
for musculoskeletal issues in 2009. Specifically, these were
issues that could have been treated directly by a Physical
Therapist and the visit to PCP might have been eliminated
altogether.
{
if you seek services at the
GHC-SCW urgent Care Clinic
late this summer, you might be
surprised to find that Physical
therapists have been added to
the urgent Care team.
{
The pilot program will begin at the end of August on a
limited basis. There will be eight PT appointments per day in
Urgent Care. Nurses will gather pertinent information from
patients requesting Urgent Care visits for musculoskeletal
pain (i.e. pain that affects the neck, shoulder, low back, hip,
etc) to determine if they should see the Physical Therapist
or an Urgent Care medical provider. If successful, the
pilot program may be expanded and include Occupational
Therapy for hand and arm injuries in 2012.
a presentation to parents and the general public on her book “So Sexy, So Soon: The New Sexualized
Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids.” While the issue can be troubling or
disconcerting, Professor Levin's approach is that there are many ways parents, teachers and others who care
about children can collectively counteract this trend beginning when children are young and working with
both girls and boys. Doing so can counteract the harm caused and help restore the emotional and physical
safety that children need to fully develop.
the GHC-SCW Quality improvement Program
The purpose the GHC-SCW Quality Improvement (QI) System is to
continuously improve the quality and safety of medical and behavioral health
care and the quality of services provided to our members.
GHC-SCW uses the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set
(HEDIS®), the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems
(CAHPS®) member satisfaction survey, complaint analysis and other
performance measures and tools to assess how well we deliver health care and
services to our members.
2010 Qi Work Plan Summary and evaluation
GHC-SCW has retained an Excellent NCQA Accreditation Status – the
highest level attainable – for 15 consecutive years. The status is based on a
recent NCQA audit and excellent HEDIS and CAHPS rates in 2010.
QI Projects at GHC-SCW Achieved Great Improvements!
GHC-SCW achieved excellent results in clinical and behavioral health
projects demonstrated in the following HEDIS results. The measures are
compared against the National 90th percentile. Nineteen measures met the
90th national benchmark and 10 measures met the 95th national benchmark.
The measures with low rate scores will be analyzed for opportunities to improve
them in the 2011 QI Work Plan.
nCQa/CaHPS (Consumer assessment of Health Care Providers and
Systems) Member Satisfaction Survey:
Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin has achieved the
recognition for improvement efforts from our valued members. GHC-SCW is
rated above the 90th percentile in the “Customer Service” category. We rated
above the 75th percentile in the “How Well Doctors Communicate” category.
Press Ganey (PG) Satisfaction Survey:
GHC-SCW started using the PG survey in January 2007, and our scores have
consistently improved. The “Overall” score improved by 2.7 points over the last
four years. Our Primary Care Providers have some of the highest scores on the
survey.
Patient Safety:
In 2009-2010, GHC-SCW has made improvements in patient safety by
addressing the following projects:
• immunization documentation improvements
• after visit summary “Derby”
• anticoagulation program
• medication accuracy
• safety net and virtual drug sample cabinets
The Patient Safety Committee has continued to monitor and respond to
patient safety issues as the committee finds opportunities for improvement.
2011 Quality improvement Work Plan
Based on opportunities for improvement identified
in 2010, GHC-SCW 2011 Focus Areas include:
• Clinical Quality Measurement Monitoring and
Improvement (e.g. diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
quality improvement, Value based care initiatives, and
comprehensive worksite wellness programs)
• Behavioral Health Quality, Monitoring and
Improvement (e.g. improve alcohol and other
drug abuse treatment, improve antidepressant
medication management, and improve member
follow-up care after hospitalization)
• Service Quality Monitoring and Improvement
(e.g. referral improvement project and data
collection for UW Health Plan)
• Patient Safety Monitoring and Improvement
(e.g. improve patient safety)
