Welcome to <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Status</strong> and Future of <strong>the</strong> World’s Large Rivers<br />

On behalf of <strong>the</strong> Local Organizing Committee I want to<br />

warmly welcome you to <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Status</strong> and Future of <strong>the</strong> World´s Large Rivers in<br />

Vienna.<br />

The pressures and impacts <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> World’s Large Rivers<br />

have increased greatly in recent years, as a c<strong>on</strong>sequence<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir exploitati<strong>on</strong> to meet human needs. Large rivers<br />

are particularly exposed to problems of multiple uses,<br />

often with c<strong>on</strong>flicting aims. This c<strong>on</strong>ference aims to<br />

provide a global forum for a wide‐ranging discussi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

key issues related to research <strong>on</strong> large rivers and to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

effective and sustainable management, involving both<br />

scientists and decisi<strong>on</strong> makers.<br />

More than 550 abstracts covering all relevant topics and rivers (from <strong>the</strong> Amaz<strong>on</strong> over <strong>the</strong><br />

C<strong>on</strong>go, <strong>the</strong> Yellow River to <strong>the</strong> Siberian Rivers) were submitted to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference and we<br />

are happy to welcome more than 400 participants coming from 73 nati<strong>on</strong>s (including all<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinents) at this important event. After <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference a Wiley‐Book and special issues<br />

of relevant SCI journals are aimed to be published.<br />

Based <strong>on</strong> a declarati<strong>on</strong>, being agreed by <strong>the</strong> participants, a global effort will hopefully be<br />

started to assess <strong>the</strong> existing and future needs of large rivers in order to better integrate<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir use, protecti<strong>on</strong> and restorati<strong>on</strong> and to devise an acti<strong>on</strong> plan. This may also include a<br />

next Large Rivers <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Beside interesting scientific talks and discussi<strong>on</strong>s I wish you all a very nice stay in <strong>the</strong><br />

springtime in Vienna. Enjoy <strong>the</strong> social activities and those that join <strong>the</strong> Post‐<str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Field Trips I wish an interesting day outside at <strong>the</strong> Danube River or in <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park.<br />

will be c<strong>on</strong>trolled within <strong>the</strong> vehicle (ticket validati<strong>on</strong> machines can be found in all subway<br />

stati<strong>on</strong>s and in <strong>the</strong> buses and trams). More informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> public transportati<strong>on</strong> can be<br />
