Message From Leadership
This past year has been another successful year for the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County.
We would like to take this opportunity to express out gratitude to the many people who have
helped us continue our mission of improving the lives of the youth of Portage County.
We are grateful for the vision of Mayor Halverson, the Stevens Point Common Council, the
leaders of Mid-State Technical College, and most of all the residents of Stevens Point for
supporting the referendum to pave the way for the relocation of MSTC to downtown. The
relocation of MSTC to downtown will allow the Boys & Girls Club the opportunity to establish
a permanent location in Stevens Point, which will ultimately increase the number of Stevens
Point youth that we will be able to serve. We continue to communicate with the parties
involved in an effort to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.
Our sites throughout Portage County, including Madison View Apartments (in the summer),
Junction City, Jefferson Elementary, Plover, Almond-Bancroft, Gateway Report Center, and The
Club downtown, continue to experience increased attendance and use. This is especially true
during the summer months. Our Board of Directors and staff have recently formed an “Impact
Committee” to focus on evaluating the needs of the families and youth in Portage County
and what programs and resources are best suited to meet these needs. We do know this –
the more youth attend the Boys & Girls Club, the more their overall well being is improved.
We understand and strongly believe that the Boys & Girls Club needs to be good stewards of
the financial support we receive by ensuring our programs and resources are implemented as
efficiently and effectively as possible in addressing the needs of the community.
This past year, the residents of Portage County continued to generously invest in the members
and programs of the Boys & Girls Club. Our “It Just Takes One” Annual Campaign was successful
despite a challenging economy. We met our goal by raising just under $190,000. Our special
event fund raisers, including Portage County Taste of Wine & Cheese, Passport to Paradise,
and Tour de BGC Bike-a-Thon all met their respective goals and were well attended. We are
grateful for the many donors and supporters who help to keep our doors open to youth in
Portage County. Our donors allow us to continue to charge just $10 per youth per year for an
annual membership. By charging such a nominal fee, the Boys & Girls Club is able to allow any
youth and family to participate. We could not do this without your continued support.

Wayne Semmerling
Wayne Semmerling was recruited to join the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors in 2009. Since
joining, Wayne has been a very active member of the Board of Directors, participating on the
Portage County Taste of Wine and Cheese Fundraiser planning committee as well as serving as the
chair of the PR and Marketing Committee.
Wayne first came to Stevens Point when an opportunity arose for Wayne’s father to purchase
Security Fence, which brought their family to Stevens Point. Wayne currently serves as the Vice
President and Sales Manager of Security Fence and Supply in Appleton and Stevens Point. He is a
4th generation Semmerling in the fence industry.
Wayne attended UWSP from 1993 to 1996, graduating with a major in communication and a minor
in business. During his time at UWSP he was a member of PRSSA and became very involved with
UWSP’s radio station 90FM-WWSP, where he served as Station Manager for 2 years.
Upon graduation Wayne took an internship in the promotions and music departments at WXRT
Chicago in the fall of 1996. In early 1997 he moved back to Stevens Point to work full time in the
family business and took an opportunity to again host a radio show on 90FM called “Then and Now”.
Wayne has been married to his wife, Shannon, for almost 13 years. She’s been his best friend and
she also has a passion for helping out in this great community of ours. Wayne and Shannon love to
travel, and try to do so whenever they are able to. Wayne also enjoys cooking and, apparently, he is
pretty good at it!
In the warmer months, outside of other outdoor activities, you’ll likely find Wayne and Shannon out
on their boat enjoying the waters of Wisconsin.

Youth of the Year
Dustin Mortensen is this year’s Youth of the Year
recipient. Dustin was recently awarded a $1,100
scholarship at this year’s Boys & Girls Club of
Portage County Youth of the Year Banquet to
go towards his college tuition. He has goals of
pursuing either professional sports in Hockey or
a science degree in Biochemistry.
Dustin grew up in a large family of two older
brothers and two sisters. Growing up in a large
family taught Dustin to be generous with his time
and cooperative with others. He demonstrates
these characteristics at The Club by trying new things and getting others to participate. He has
attended The Club for seven years and is the current president of the club’s leadership group,
Keystone Club. As president of Keystone, Dustin helped spearhead an effort to raise money for
toys to be donated and sent to children effected by the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster.
Dustin spends his time at The Club participating in many different activities and helping others.
He helps other club members with their homework and helps the staff clean until the last chore
is done each evening. He is an out-going and well-liked member with a talent for motivating
others to be interactive at The Club. Dustin loves to volunteer whether it is helping a staff
member at the Boys and Girls Club or working at the Salvation Army. He likes to prepare meals
and he has been doing that for the Salvation Army for almost a year.
He attends High school at Northland Lutheran High School near Wausau, WI. Dustin is a
proficient student and chose to attend this school because of the smaller class sizes and
because it fits with his religious background.
Dustin has developed into a caring and generous young man and we are so pleased to be able
to recognize him. The Northland Lutheran High School Administrator, Rick Grundman, was
definitely right when he said, “He is respected by his peers and has a deep compassion for
others. That compassion often manifests itself in action. His classmates know him and respect
him as someone who truly cares and will do whatever he can to help others.”

Program Highlight
LEAP
The LEAP concept was formed after a handful of professional staff and board members
attended a conference and were inspired by a reading program offered by the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Milwaukee. The first step we took was forming a committee tasked with
coming up with a program that could be facilitated within the Clubs. The committee
decided that the primary goal of LEAP should be to instill a sense of enjoyment for
reading by offering a program focused on fun and interaction.
The books and corresponding activities are stored in thematic bins; each containing 1-2
read aloud books, 25-30 other books, and a few activities to coincide with the theme.
The initial goal was to have twenty-five bins within the first six months, each being pieced
together and donated by a community individual, business, or organization.
Leap has been an active program at the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County for a year.
We are proud to say that we have thirty bins with different themes and are currently
working on setting up a fund to create more bins. The LEAP program is facilitated at each
site except for the teen club. The program takes place two times a week for an hour.
During the first half hour a book is read from the bin, followed by activities relating to
the theme. Children remain motivated with the LEAP program through the rotation of
the bins every two weeks. Staff also keep participants in suspense by not revealing the
new theme until LEAP begins each week. LEAP occurs at the same time as Power Hour,
allowing an option for children who do not have homework to complete.

Twice a week our Club members come prepared to workout with one of The
Club staff. Sweat your pants off is meant to be a “fun” experience including
activities ranging from exercising to 1980’s jazzercise videos to going swimming
at the Ramada Inn.
COOKING CLUB
Cooking club is an exciting hands-on learning experience where teens prepare a
snack or dinner for themselves and their peers. Every week members get to learn
how to make a different dish and sit down together as a group and enjoy the meal
together. Dishes have included grilled ham and cheese, penna rosa, and tacos.

Approach to Impact
WHY THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB IS NEEDED
NEEDS
The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County has recently formed a committee of individuals
tasked with establishing a strategy for increasing and evaluating the IMPACT of the Boys
& Girls Club. The first step was to identify 5 key “ASSUMPTIONS” or rationale as to why
the Boys & Girls Club is needed in our community. Next, we developed a strategy that
would help us address our assumptions.
• There is a gap, in Portage County, in the opportunity for some youth to engage in
positive, structured and safe activities, after school and on
weekends, especially in rural areas.
• Portage County youth need more positive social skills development
and interactions, ultimately benefiting their relationship with the community.
• Many of our youth don’t have enough opportunity for more direct interaction with
positive adult role models outside the home and school.
• Other than what youth receive at home, there is not enough academic
support and reinforcement for what they’ve been taught in school.
• Youth in Portage County need more support in their health and
lifestyle decisions.

LEAP Volunteer
Leslie McClain is a professor in the
School of Education, UW-Stevens Point.
She teaches undergraduate courses in
content literacy for future middle and
high school teachers. She also teaches
graduate courses for teachers seeking
their Reading Specialist license. She
has been a professor in the School of
Education for 25 years and during this
time also served as Associate Dean and
Head of the School of Education for 12
years. Her research interests center
around effective literacy practices,
as well as wisdom and compassion
in education. She has presented
at numerous conferences and has
published in various journals including
the International Journal of Educational
Leadership, Journal of School Leadership,
the Hmong Studies Journal. Leslie lives
in Plover with her dog, Maddie. She
enjoys walking, reading, and gardening,
in her spare time. Prior to living in
Stevens Point, Leslie lived in Lawrence,
Kansas. She earned her Bachelors
Degree and PhD from the University of
Kansas in Lawrence. She also taught
high school English in southeast Kansas.
Leslie became involved with the Boys
& Girls Club through the work of the
Club’s new literacy program, LEAP. She
has served on the Advisory Committee
for the program and helps with the
design and implementation of the
program. She feels the work of this
program is “essential to young learners
and readers. It is our hope that we can
instill an on-going love of learning and
reading, while giving them a chance to
read together, explore books and their
meaning, and see adult role models who
also appreciate the benefits of reading.”
When asked about the highlights of her experience with the B& G Club she responded:
“Many. The intentions of the Boys and Girls Club, and the benefits they are offering to
children in our community is astounding. The staff are such responsive, caring adults.
And of course – working to instill an appreciation for literacy in young people – is key! I
am so grateful to be a part of helping out with this good work.”

Being Yourself
Youth Editorial

Yokwi! That was hello in Marshallese which is the main language of the Marshall Islands
where I, Jordan Bechtold, was born. Being born in a different country already gave me individuality.
Individuality means to be you and nobody else. I am very unique and proud of being unique. If people
say turn right I’ll be one of those who will turn left, provided left is the right way to go. If you
have ever heard of “March to the beat to your own drum”, which means be yourself; that would be
what I do. So read on my friends who I can’t see, and discover who you are.
Sometimes being yourself can be very hard to do. Some people might not like who you
are, what you stand for, or your thoughts and belief. You can’t change their opinions, but you don’t
have to believe them. If you want to sing then sing! If you want to dance then who is there to
stop you?
Lots of famous people wouldn’t get where they are if they were afraid to be them.
Examples are some of your favorite singers like Lady GaGa, Ke$ha, Eminem, and Michael Jackson. Other
examples are movie stars like Jack Black, Johnny Deep, Will Smith, and Jim Carry. These people are
or were themselves every day, no matter what everyone else thinks.
If everyone acted like everyone else then how would we know who’s who’s? If you ever
looked in the mirror then you see your reflection. If you acted like everyone else then no one would
know who you are. Nobody would be remembered for anything. Everyone wants to be remembered,
but do you want to be remembered for whom you are or who you could’ve been?
So to end this fun one sided conversation I’ll ask you again. Who are you? If you know who
you are then be proud of what you are (unless you’re a bad person like a robber or a murderer,
if you are then shame on you!). If you ever met me or my friends then you would know I’m not
your average person. If they don’t like who I am then I tell them “I’m going to walk how I want
to walk, I’m going to dance when I want to dance, and I’ll talk how I want to talk. You can’t change
me and I can’t change you.” Like fingerprints no one is the same. Even though we may look alike we
aren’t the same. So one way to wrap this up is Yowke, which also means farewell.

AUTO BODY PROGRAM
The kids at Gateway and a few other kids from other sites
have a chance to use some of their time learning aspects of
auto body repair. With the auto body program, headed up
by volunteer Charlie Fernandez and Gateway Report Center
Director JR Wynne, the kids get to work one-on-one with
auto body professionals at Pat’s Car Star in Plover.
Students start by learning the basics on how to repair a small
dent in a steel panel and each student repairs their own
panel. They fix the dent, prime it, prep it for paint, paint the
steel panel, and then finish it by putting their own designed
pinstripe on the panel. When they are done, they get to take
their finished product home to show what they have learned
during this six-week course.
This program is truly important because it is a self-confidence
booster and knowing that the kids can really take a project
from start to finish increases their self-image and the vision
they have for themselves in the future.
Helping Kids Realize Their Potential
When interviewing Pat Arnold, co-owner of
Pat’s Car Star, he said,
“I really enjoy watching these
young people come the f i rst night
not knowing what to expect. As
each week goes by I get to know
their skill level better and they feel
more comfortable in the work they
are performing. By the last class
we all know each other and I feel
as much pride in the product they
produced as they do.”
