Dear Friends,
As we open new opportunities for growth, we are steadfast in our values of local leadership, sustainability,
and social justice. We begin by partnering with visionary pioneers who are transforming their communities
and their countries. We empower them with the tools, knowledge and resources to turn big ideas into big
changes. Now, Green Empowerment is on the cusp of dramatic growth.
In 2011 alone, we have helped thousands of people improve their lives with clean water and electricity.
In these pages, you’ll read about specific projects that helped people take tangible steps out of poverty:
irrigation that boosts farming income, power for small businesses, pure water for the first time, an orphanage
that turns on the lights, and many more. In addition to the community projects of clean water and renewable
energy, we connected grassroots leaders by establishing peer-to-peer networks and training on small
wind power and biodigesters. We are also designing a curriculum on micro-hydropower, through a USAID
(U.S. Agency for International Development) grant with Arizona State University, to spread our accumulated
expertise to other countries around the world. While continuing to deepen our long-standing partnerships in
countries where we’ve been successful, we are reaching new geographic areas, including Africa.
Finally, we are excited to announce a grant from USAID to provide drinking water to 15,000 people in the
Philippines, using innovative ram pump technology. As our first direct USAID grant, this marks a milestone
in the growth of Green Empowerment, and demonstrates how we can leverage donations from individual
supporters, like you, into life-transforming projects for thousands of people.
Your contributions are essential to assist more people in the year to come.
Thank you for your continued support.
With gratitude,
Accomplishments Building International Networks
Working with a small, outstanding staff, and within a lean
budget, Green Empowerment and its partners in 7 countries
had a fantastic year. Project and program accomplishments
for 2011 include:
4 5
Accomplishments Building International Networks
Served 1,150 people with improved access to clean
water and 2,128 people with electricity in their homes,
powered by renewable energy — to expand opportunities
for small businesses, improve health and alleviate poverty.
Assisted with the training of over 163 entrepreneurs,
foreign government officials, and in-country
Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) leaders in
small wind, biogas, and clean water technologies
so they can be even more effective in developing
projects in their own countries to benefit thousands
more people.
Led over 50 U.S.-based university leaders and dedicated
professionals on project site visits to educate, train,
partner, and inspire.
Over the last three years, access to water from an
irrigation system enables Toño Campos to extend his
growing season, and expand the crops he can cultivate
to include bananas, yucca, avocados, mangos, and
vegetables, in addition to staples of corn and beans.
Micro-Hydropower Training Through Vocational
Training and Education on Clean Energy
Green Empowerment is coordinating the development and delivery of training and
consulting services for micro-hydro technology around the world as a core associate
for the VOCTEC program through USAID.
RedBioLAC
Network of Biodigesters for Latin America and the Caribbean
The 2011 RedBioLAC symposium held in Puebla, Mexico was co-organized by
Green Empowerment. Fifty-four biogas professionals from 14 countries spent a
week attending technical presentations, participating in a panel on micro-financing,
conducting informational meetings, and visiting farmers to see biodigesters at work.
WindWorks
Scaling Up the Use of Small Wind Turbines in Latin America
The WindWorks Symposium in Peru attracted attendees from 9 countries. Over 100
participants were present for technical presentations, a trip to a wind tunnel, and site
visits to existing off-grid wind turbines at small businesses and a rural orphanage.

In Mindanao, Green Empowerment supported
a 11kW micro-hydro system which was installed
in the villages of Datalnay and Dlumay by
longtime local partner, SIBAT. The system
powers household lighting and a communal
grain mill, improving health and economic
opportunities to more than 1,500 people.
Assisted SIBAT with funding for a dormitory
located at its Sustainable Agricultural Training
Center (SATC). The additional housing doubles
the number of farmers that can participate in
trainings each year.
Accomplishments By Country
A solar water pump was installed to deliver
water directly to homes in El Jocote, providing
clean water to 220 people. Subsequent studies
and workshops were conducted on sanitation,
watershed management, and hygiene.
In El Roblar, in-country partner Asofénix
installed a solar mini grid project for
five homes using a locally-fabricated turbine.
The micro-hydro projects completed in El Plan
and Bejuco bring electricity to 470 people.
Cookstoves were
built with families in
San Jose de Bocay.
The cookstoves are
adapted to the
needs, use and local
customs to decrease
smoke inhalation and related illnesses, and
significantly reduce firewood consumption.
Rosario Herrera with her new cookstove.
Peru
A 500W wind turbine was installed at an
orphanage for basic electricity and food
refrigeration.
Water is now piped to homes in San Antonio
and Chorro Blanco, serving 825 people.
Held health workshops and sanitation.
Completed a micro-hydro power project
in Suro Antivo, supplying electricity to
225 people, and began a micro-hydro project
in San Miguel de Pauca with 175 people.
450 people in the community of Sallani
now use biosand filters for clean water,
improved cookstoves, eco-latrines and
solid waste management.
Taught GIS to local partner and government
agencies for planning rural electrification
using renewable energy in the Amazon.
Installed solar panels to provide 115 people
in Alto Peru with electricity.
Borneo, Malaysia
A Green Empowerment associate, working
with in-country partner TONIBUNG, installed
a 5kw micro-hydro system providing electricity
for Babalitan’s 300 residents and a school.
Madagascar
In collaboration with the California Academy
of Sciences and Sunpower, a 7kW solar PV
installation was completed at a biodiversity
research station in Madagascar.
Thailand/Burma
Green Empowerment secured funding to
put solar power on two new health clinics and
five new humanitarian training centers with
in-country partner Border Green Energy Team
(BGET). Thousands of internally-displaced
people will benefit from the care at the clinics.
The first of 12 solar powered irrigation systems
Health assessment surveys were completed
proved very successful in El Jocote, increasing
Improved health of hundreds of people in
to compare communities with water and
and extending crop production.
the Sacred Valley with a new lightweight
energy to those without these basic services.
water filter and health outreach.
6 7
Marta depended on her husband to fill buckets with water and bring them
back on a mule. Since he needed to get out to the fields before the scorching
heat of day, he would leave for water at 2 am. The wait for water could be
long behind people waiting from neighboring communities. She described
the old water source as a shallow, spring-fed hole, dug out on the side of a
riverbed. Now, clean water is piped directly to her home in El Jocote.
