Welcome to the Project Catalyst Symposium! We are pleased that you are able to join us on March 4 th and 5 th , 2009. The aim of the symposium is to integrate our collective insights into a picture of what a successful global solution to climate change could look like, and to define three or four practical steps for Project Catalyst to take to support that solution. Enclosed is information on the agenda and symposium logistics. Pre‐reading materials will be emailed to you tomorrow. As many of the sessions are interactive, knowledge of the pre‐reading materials is important and will enable you to engage fully with the discussions and debates. Agenda The full agenda for the two days is enclosed. Agenda choices Optional Sessions An optional session will run at 8:00 on both mornings of the conference. If you would like to join either of these sessions, please let us know when you register on arrival. Optional session 1, Wednesday March 4 th : Overview of the global abatement cost curve version v2.0 In this session we will discuss the findings and methodology of the McKinsey Global GHG Abatement Cost Curve v2.0. Questions to be covered include: What are the different sources of abatement and what will it cost to reach a 450 ppm pathway? How is the cost curve calculated? How can it be used to inform understanding of policy choices? Optional session 2, Thursday March 5 th : Overview of carbon finance In this session we will discuss the basics of carbon finance. Questions to be covered include: What is the difference between cash flow and investment capital investments, and why are they important? What is the role of carbon markets? What are the different types of carbon market, and why do carbon prices differ? Breakout sessions There will be three problem‐solving break‐out sessions over the two days of the conference: 1. Critical choices for a global agreement 2. Proposals for elements of an agreement 3. Making it work – case studies The aim of the symposium is to stimulate integrated problem solving. Therefore, while some of you may want to stay in the sessions aligned to your working groups, you are also free to choose break‐out sessions not directly linked to those groups, and to use the sessions to contribute to an integrated view of the solution. The second and third sessions build on the previous sessions and therefore, to make the most of them, we ask that you follow one breakout session thread over the two days. The recommended breakout threads are shown on the enclosed ‘map’. Each breakout has pre‐reading materials that we recommend you read prior to the start of the conference on Wednesday. These materials will provide you with what you need to know to play an active part in each session. You will be asked to indicate your preference of breakout sessions when you register. Please be aware that in order to ensure effective discussion and debate the size of the breakouts will be limited and you may not get your first preference break‐out group.
