<strong>Workshop</strong> Rationale <strong>and</strong> Theme<br />

We are pleased to announce the 12 th <strong>Workshop</strong><br />

on Sustainable Horticultural Production in the<br />

Tropics. The theme of the workshop is ‘How<br />

should we teach in horticulture courses? From<br />

frontal teaching to problem based learning’.<br />

Training <strong>and</strong> research provide the requisite human<br />

resource <strong>and</strong> technological solutions to support<br />

the horticulture sector. It is there<strong>for</strong>e important that<br />

training <strong>and</strong> research are aligned to the needs of<br />

the sector. This year’s workshop shall focus on<br />

methodology in horticulture training <strong>and</strong> research.<br />

This will complement last year’s workshop where<br />

content was covered.<br />

Other topics of importance to horticulture shall<br />

also be covered. The workshop is divided into<br />

categories <strong>and</strong> sub-themes (topics) as follows:<br />

ISSUES IN TRAINING AND RESEARCH<br />

[A1] Practical training<br />

[A2] Research<br />

[A3] Extension <strong>and</strong> technology transfer<br />

[A4] Higher <strong>and</strong> middle level training<br />

[A5] Delivery methodology e.g. e-delivery<br />

[A7] Examinations <strong>and</strong> evaluation<br />

[A8] Certifying bodies of horticultural products<br />

ORIGINAL RESEARCH AND REVIEWS<br />

Research work in the following areas:<br />

[B1] Horticultural production,<br />

[B2] Crop protection <strong>and</strong> nutrition,<br />

[B3] Marketing issues,<br />

[B4] Socio-economic <strong>and</strong> environmental issues<br />

Venue<br />

The workshop will take place at Bondo University<br />

College, which is located 70 km from Kisumu, the<br />

third Kenyan City. Bondo University is located a<br />

short distance from Kogello, the village where<br />

President Obama’s father hails from.<br />

Format<br />

The workshop shall be accomplished through oral<br />

presentations, panel discussions <strong>and</strong> posters.<br />

There will also be excursions to selected<br />

horticultural production <strong>and</strong> scenic sites.<br />

On the first day of the workshop, participants will<br />

be provided with books of abstracts having a<br />

comprehensive program <strong>for</strong> the workshop.<br />

The workshop language is English.<br />

Exhibitions<br />

Facilities <strong>and</strong> space <strong>for</strong> exhibiting technologies<br />

<strong>and</strong> products from the horticultural sector will be<br />

provided.<br />

Application Procedure<br />

Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in this<br />

critical event through: Presentation, Exhibition<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or Attendance. Applications may be made<br />

Where applicants are unable to use the system,<br />

they may send their abstracts to the organisers by<br />

The deadline <strong>for</strong> receiving abstracts is September<br />

30 th , 2012. The abstracts should be in English<br />

language. They should not be more than 300<br />

words <strong>and</strong> in MS Word (.doc) or rich text <strong>for</strong>mat<br />

(.rtf). The abstract should contain the aim(s),<br />

methodology, results, discussion <strong>and</strong> conclusion.<br />

They should include a title, name(s) of the<br />

author(s), affiliation, mailing address, e-mail<br />

address <strong>and</strong> telephone number(s). Authors should<br />

also state the sub-theme <strong>and</strong> indicate their<br />

preference <strong>for</strong> oral or poster presentation.<br />

Acceptance will be communicated to authors by<br />

October 15 th 2012. The closing date <strong>for</strong> receiving<br />

full papers shall be November 15 th , 2012.<br />

<strong>Papers</strong> submitted <strong>for</strong> the workshop shall be<br />

considered <strong>for</strong> publication in the African Journal of<br />

Horticultural Science.<br />
