of the report, “a Nation at Risk.” Former
New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein
stated in Atlantic Magazine (June 2011) that,
while spending in education has doubled, gains
made in schools are negligible and the high
school graduation rate has continued at about
70 percent. Add to this the pressure on teachers
who are being confronted with a rating system
based partially on student achievement?
Walt Gardner in Education Week (May 16)
feels these views are “half-factors.” Isn’t it then
fair to ask if the pressures for achievement will
diminish these important personal relationships?
Gardner refutes Klein’s assertions that improvements
have made under his leadership by asserting
the schools still need further improvements.
Klein cites the scores of the National Assessment
of Educational Progress as an example of lack of
proficiencies while Gardner feels many students
do show a “basic” level of proficiency.

Elia, concludes that politicians have undermined
respect for education. Respect for learning and
a safe environment are goals worth striving for

Questions are now being raised about
whether the intense pressure on teachers to raise
student scores will diminish the important personal
relationships that build trust. Gardner in
Education Week (May 16) stated that in some
heavily unionized states students have much
higher NAEP scores than states that have no
union contracts. Do teachers who think they are
getting more job protections feel more comfortable
about forming appropriate academic relationships
with students?
Children need all the help they can get to
receive the best possible education and these
studies show this is not an easy task. Let’s at
least credit the Mount Vernon School System
for a program that helps the students graduate
high school.
