Sunday Songs
Barges
Out of my window, looking at the night,
I can see the barges flickering light.
Silently flows the water to the sea
As the barges too go silently.
CHORUS
Barges, I would like to go with you,
I would like to sail the ocean blue.
Barges, are there treasures in your hold?
Do you fight like pirates brave and bold?
Out of my window looking at the night
I can see the barges flickering light.
Starboard shines green and port is glowing red,
I can see the barges dead ahead.
CHORUS
How my heart longs to sail away with you
As you sail across the ocean blue.
But I must stay beside my window clear
As I watch you sail away from here.
CHORUS
NOTE: According to Girl Scout legend, the young woman who wrote this song did so
from her hospital bed. She was inspired by the sights of the harbor outside her window,
and dictated the first two verses of the song. After she died, her Girl Scout friends wrote
the last verse for her.
1
Circle Game
Yesterday a child came out to wonder,
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar.
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star.
CHORUS:
And the seasons, they go round and round,
And the painted ponies go up and down,
We’re captive on a carousel of time.
We can’t return, we can only look
Behind from where we came,
And go round, and round, and round, in the circle game.
Now the child moves ten times round the seasons,
Skated over ten clear frozen streams.
Words like, “When you’re older” must appease him,
And promises of “some day” make his dreams.
CHORUS
Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now,
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town.
And they tell him, “Take your time, it won’t be long now
‘Till you drag your feet to slow those circles down.”
CHORUS
So the years spin by and now the child is twenty,
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true.
There’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty,
Before that last revolving year is through.
CHORUS
2
Edelweiss
The Cruel War
The cruel war is raging and Johnny has to fight;
How I long to be with him from morning ‘till night.
I long to be with him, it grieves my heart so,
Won’t you let me go with you? No, my love, no.
Today is Sunday and Monday is the day
That your captain will call you and you must obey.
Your captain will call you; it grieves my heart so,
Won’t you let me go with you? No, my love, no.
I’ll tie back my hair, men’s clothing I’ll put on,
And I’ll pass as your comrade as we march along.
I’ll pass as your comrade; no one will ever know.
Won’t you let me go with you? No, my love, no.
Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, I feel you are unkind,
For I love you far better than all of mankind.
I love you far better than words can e’er express,
Won’t you let me go with you? Yes, my love, yes.
The cruel war is over and Johnny has come home,
But his head hangs in sorrow, for he walks alone.
She died by his side. No one will ever know,
Won’t you let me go with you? No, my love, no.
Edelweiss, edelweiss,
Every morning you greet me.
Small and white, keen and bright,
You look happy to meet me.
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow,
Bloom and grow forever.
Edelweiss, edelweiss,
Bless my homeland forever.
3
Four Strong Winds
CHORUS
Four strong winds that blow lonely, seven seas that run high.
All those things that don’t change, come what may.
But our good times are all gone and I’m bound for movin’ on.
I’ll look for you if I’m ever back this way.
Think I’ll go out to Alberta, weather’s good there in the fall.
Got some friends that I can go to working for.
Still I wish you’d change your mind if I asked you one more time,
But we’ve been through that a hundred times before.
CHORUS
If I get there before the snow flies and if things are going good,
You could meet me if I sent you down the fare,
But by then it would be winter, not much for you to do,
And those winds they sure blow cold a-way out there.
CHORUS
4
Grandfather’s Clock
My grandfather’s clock was too tall for the shelf
So it stood ninety years on the floor.
It was taller by half than the old man himself
Though it weighed not a penny’s weight more.
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born
And was always his pleasure and pride,
But it stopped short never to go again when the old man died.
CHORUS
Ninety years without slumbering, tick tock, tick tock,
His life’s seconds numbering, tick tock, tick tock,
But it stopped short never to go again when the old man died.
In watching its pendulum swing to and fro
Many hours did he spend as a boy.
In childhood and manhood the clock seemed to know
When to share in his sorrow and joy.
For it struck twenty four as he entered through the door
With a blooming and beautiful bride,
But it stopped short never to go again when the old man died.
CHORUS
My grandfather said that of those he could hire
Not a servant more faithful be found.
For it wasted no time and it had one desire:
At the close of each day to be wound.
For it kept in its place not a frown upon its face
And its hands never hung by its side,
But it stopped short never to go again when the old man died.
CHORUS
It rang an alarm in the still of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb.
And we knew that his spirit was ready for flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
But it still kept its rhyme with a soft and weathered chime
As it silently stood by his side,
Then it stopped short never to go again when the old man died.
CHORUS
5
I See The Moon
I see the moon and the moon sees me.
The moon sees the one that I want to see.
God bless the moon and God bless me
And God bless the one that I want to see.
Seems to me that God above
Picked you out for me to love.
Picked you out from all the rest
Because he knew I loved you the best.
I see the moon and the moon sees me.
The moon sees the one that I want to see.
God bless the moon and God bless me
And God bless the one that I want to see.
Long and Rocky Road
6
Kum Ba Yah
Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah,
Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah,
Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah,
Oh, Lord, kum ba yah.
Someone’s cryin’ my Lord, kum ba
yah…
Someone’s singin’ my Lord, kum ba
yah…
Someone’s prayin’ my Lord, kum ba
yah…
Kum ba yah, my Lord, kum ba yah …
Down a long and rocky road there’s a place I long to be.
Down a memory laden pathway there are many friends I see.
And that long and rocky road comes back to life when leaves turn green,
And I hear the birds a-singing and the laughter of the stream.
CHORUS
So I’ll go back to Waukeela, I’ll walk that road again.
Yes, I’ll go back to Waukeela, ‘cause I love to be there when I watch
That long and rocky road come back to life when leaves turn green
And the voices of the children re-echo in my dreams.
When the cabin door opens wide and you hear the bugle blow
And you see our flag unfurl then you know camp’s on the go.
In the evening watch the glow of the campfire’s radiant light
And around Crystal Lake it makes such a lovely sight.
CHORUS
As the candle boats sail on and the last farewell is made
And you see old autumn starting on its colorful parade
Then that long and rocky road turns to shades of brown and gold
And we’ll close our eyes and dream of the memories we still hold.
CHORUS
Oh Waukeela, You’re in my Heart
All my bags are packed,
I’m ready to go
To Waukeela Camp for Girls.
Can’t wait to see my friends when I get there.
I’ve traveled for so many miles,
Memories flood back and see the smiles
Of our camp amidst the tall pine trees.
CHORUS:
So sing with me and smile again.
Tell me that you’ll be my friend.
Promise me we’ll meet again next year.
Oh Waukeela, you’re in my heart.
Let’s hope that we won’t have to part.
Oh camp, please never end.
The bugle’s blowin’, dawn has come.
Another day has just begun.
Already I feel as though I’m home.
Throughout the day we swim and play
For soon the month will pass away,
And sadly we will have to leave our camp.
CHORUS
To my friends I want to say,
“Thank you for these happy days.
I can’t believe it’s time to leave so soon.
But we’ll be back again next year,
So don’t you shed another tear.
I’ll think of you each and every day.”
CHORUS
7
Pine Tree
One Tin Soldier
Listen children to a story that was written long ago
‘Bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley far below.
On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore they’d have it for their very own.
CHORUS
So go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend;
Do it in the name of heaven, you can justify it in the end.
There won’t be any trumpets blowing come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they’d kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom: With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there.
CHORUS
Now the valley cried with anger, “Mount your horses, draw your swords!”
And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward.
Now they stood besides the treasure on a mountain dark and red,
Turned the stone and looked beneath it, peace on earth was all it said.
Whenever I see a pine tree,
Waukeela, I think of you.
It brings back fond memories to me
Of all the things we used to do.
Whenever I think of friendship
I think of those we knew.
You taught us how to be loyal,
You taught us how to be true.
We’ll remember you.
CHORUS
8
Pooh Corner
Christopher Robin and I walked along
Under branches lit up by the moon.
Posing our questions to Owl and Eyore
As our days disappeared all too soon.
Well I’ve wandered much further today than I should
And I can’t seem to find my way back to the wood,
CHORUS
So help me if you can, I’ve got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one,
You’d be surprised, there’s so much to be done,
Count all the bees in the hive,
Chase all the clouds from the sky (Chase those clouds away),
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh…
Winnie the Pooh doesn’t know what to do
He’s got a honey jar stuck on his nose.
He came to me asking help and advice
And from there no one knows where to go
So I sent him to ask of the Owl, if he’s there,
How to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear,
CHORUS
Sing one verse through with “la, la, la,”
So help me if you can I’ve got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one,
You’d be surprised there’s so much to be done,
Count all the bees in the hive,
Chase all the clouds from the sky (Chase those clouds away),
Back to the days of Christopher Robin…
Back to the ways of Christopher Robin…
Back to the days of Pooh.
9
Puff the Magic Dragon
CHORUS:
Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and ceiling wax and other fancy stuff.
CHORUS
Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sails.
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes would bow when e’er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name.
CHORUS 2X
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys.
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened: Jackie Paper came no more,
And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
CHORUS 2X
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain.
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend Puff could not be brave,
And Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.
CHORUS 2X
One grey night it happened, Puff woke from a dream.
He thought he heard a familiar voice and Jackie’s smile, it seemed.
He looked around his cavern, and over by the door
Was a little boy with a piece of string and a smile he’d seen before.
He said, “Hello, I’m Billy. My dad told me your name.
He said I’d find you in your cave along the cherry lane.”
Puff that mighty dragon smiled in his joy.
He’d never be alone again for this was Jackie’s boy.
CHORUS 2X
10
River is Flowing
The river is flowing, flowing and
growing
The river is flowing back to the sea.
Mother, carry me. Child I will always
be.
Mother, carry me back to the sea.
Sparks
11
Rose, Rose
Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose,
Shall I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at my will, Sire.
At my will.
Sparks are flying high and low ‘round our campfire bright.
Girls reflect the fireside’s glow, full of camp’s delight.
As the sparks to embers turn at the closing of the day
We know that stars and moon so bright guide us through the night
To another day.
Taps
Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky,
All is well, safely rest.
God is nigh.
Tell Me Why
Tell me why the stars do shine.
Tell me why the ivy twines.
Tell me why the sky’s so blue.
Tell me, Waukeela, just why I love you.
Because God made the stars to shine,
Because God made the ivy twine,
Because God made the sky so blue,
God made Waukeela, that’s why I love you.
Today
CHORUS
Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries; I’ll drink your sweet wine.
A million tomorrows may all pass away
E’er I forget the joys that are mine today.
Now I’ll be a dandy and I’ll be a rover,
You’ll know who I am by the songs that I sing.
I’ll feast at your table; I’ll sleep in your clover
Who knows what tomorrow may bring.
CHORUS
I can’t be contented with yesterday’s glories,
I can’t live on promises winter to spring.
Today is my moment and now is my story
I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing.
CHORUS
The Water Is Wide
The water is wide, I can’t cross o’er
And neither have I wings to fly.
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I.
There is a ship that sails the sea.
It’s loaded deep, as deep can be.
But not as deep as the love I’m in,
I know not how I sink or swim.
For love is gentle and love is kind
And love is sweet when first is new.
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like morning dew.
The water is wide, I can’t cross o’er
And neither have I wings to fly.
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I.
And both shall row, my love and I.
Wee Baby Moon
There’s a wee baby moon lying on its back
With its wee baby toes in the air
And it’s all by itself in the deep blue sky
But the wee baby moon doesn’t care.
Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone? Gone to young girls, every one.
When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone? Gone to young boys, every one.
When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?
Where have all the young boys gone? Gone to soldiers, every one…
Where have all the soldiers gone? Gone to graveyards, every one…
Where have all the graveyards gone? Gone to flowers, every one…
