spring season at the roses.
this spring, we are delighted to
have been chosen as the world
premiere venue for popular tV
presenter Michaela strachan’s
new stage show, the really wild show,
which takes children through an a-Z of
animal related nursery rhymes.
we know that many of our audience
members keep a keen eye out for the annual
classical concert series, which usually runs
through the autumn and early spring. this
season we are pleased to welcome classical
guitarist craig ogden in february and the
hepplewhite Piano trio in april.
Live screenings are going from strength to
strength and we look forward to the fourth
transmission from the royal opera house
as they present the royal Ballet’s alice’s
adventures in wonderland.
having previously programmed a summer
festival and a halloween fright night spectacular,
Y-occupy, the roses’ group of young
programmers, are now planning a folk event
francesca Zambello’s acclaimed production returns to
the Met for its first revival since 2003. after 10 years of
siege by the greeks, the trojans rejoice at the prospect
of peace and readily accept the greeks’ wooden horse
peace offering. foreseeing death for both her father
King Priam and her fiancé coroebus, prophetess
cassandra warns her father of further calamities,
and as the trojans welcome the horse into the city,
cassandra realises that it spells disaster. starring
Deborah Voigt, susan graham and Marcello giordani.
with his louche air and taste for smoking, gambling
and women, it’s hard to believe cis farringdon is 14,
and in fact he isn’t. agatha, his mother, lopped five
years from her age when she married. at the hôtel des
Princes agatha tells cis’s godfather of her deception,
unaware cis and his stepfather are also there. a night
of outrageous mishaps ensue as trapped guests try
to avoid the law and each other. Directed by timothy
sheader. starring Patrick Barlow and Nicholas Blane.
following ‘anna Bolena’, the second opera in
Donizetti’s famous trilogy explores the relationship
between Maria stuarda and her cousin elisabetta as
they battle to be Queen. in this twisted love triangle
between the two women and roberto, the earl of
Leicester, director David McVicar chooses to pay
tribute to the romantic nature of Donizetti’s music,
rather than the historical accuracy of the period.
starring Joyce DiDonato, elza Van Den heever and
Joshua hopkins.
Michael Mayer’s new production transports Verdi’s
creation from 16th century italy to 1960s Las Vegas.
as cerpano’s wife secretly has an affair behind his
back with the Duke, his unlucky servant rigoletto
makes fun of her husband. Yet when Monterone,
an elderly nobleman, arrives to denounce the Duke
for seducing his daughter, he pronounces a curse
on the Duke and his servant as he is angered to be
the subject of their ridicule. starring Diana Damrau,
oksana Volkova and Piotr Beczala.
wagner’s most sacred opera sees leader amfortas
suffer with mortal wounds. in this final masterpiece
by the renowned composer, gurnemanz hopes that
Parsifal, a young orphan, will fulfil ancient prophesy by
developing a sense of compassion and wisdom, saving
amfortas from his inevitable death. starring Katarina
Dalayman, Jonas Kaufmann and Peter Mattei, will
Parsifal fulfil the prophesy in time or will amfortas fall
victim to his suffering?
Francesca Da Rimini (Riccardo Zandonai)
this opulent and realistic production follows
francesca who must marry gianciotto. for fear that
she will change her mind when she realises that
gianciotto is disabled, francesca is led to believe that
his brother, Paulo, is the man she will wed. too late
to change her mind on her wedding day, francesca
marries gianciotto and is angered at Paulo for
misleading her. this is the first Met revival of ‘francesca
Da rimini’ for more than 25 years and stars eva-Maria
westbroek, Marcello giordani and robert Bru Baker.
alan Bennett returns to the National with his latest play
the People, but details of the script, story line and plot
are so safe guarded that the Nt are keeping everything a
secret until the lights go up on the first performance. all
we know is that it has something to do with the National
trust and Bennett’s stimulus is his unease about visiting
National trust houses when he wrote an essay for the
London review of Books. following his sell out production
of the history Boys, the People is expected to sell out
months before the show opens at the National.
those familiar with Lewis carroll’s literary menagerie
of colourful characters will enjoy the clarity with which
christopher wheeldon portrays them in dance. the
whole company is drawn into the fun, dancing a myriad
of quirky characters: a twitchy white rabbit, a tap
dancing Mad hatter, a sinuous caterpillar and so many
more. alice and the Knave of hearts, deftly danced by
two royal Ballet principal dancers, are at the centre of
the story, and the role of the Queen of hearts, another
principal, is wittily captured with hilarious results.
Bond is back and, 50 years after ‘Dr No’, the franchise
shows no signs of tiring with the best instalment yet.
the plot puts Judi Dench’s M in the thick of the action,
as Mi6 comes under attack at the behest of a creepy
new adversary, who Bond tracks down to a remote
island stronghold. Director sam Mendes gives us all the
action, glamour and wisecracks we expect, but also
takes time to develop characters and explore Bond’s
intriguing backstory.
Based on a story so extraordinary it could only be
true, this gripping thriller recounts the covert cia
operation to extract six americans from iran following
the storming of the Us embassy in 1979. as cover,
they pose as a film crew scouting locations for a sci-fi
movie, constructing a back story so elaborate it even
fooled hollywood. it’s an impressive achievement,
intelligently scripted, impeccably acted and with
meticulous production design that recalls the great
political thrillers of the 1970s.
David attenborough narrates this spectacular 3D
documentary about one penguin’s remarkable
coming of age. three years ago, the Penguin King left
home. Now he is returning to the place where he was
born, one of the most densely packed, sought after
pieces of land in the southern hemisphere. there,
he must establish his place and find a mate. his story
is often comic, sometimes tragic, and ultimately
triumphant – a rite of passage set in one of the earth’s
last great wildernesses.
Described as ‘the King’s speech’ meets ‘Driving Miss
Daisy’, this crowd-pleasing culture-clash comedy
smashed box office records in its native france and
has gone on to become the biggest grossing foreign
language film of all time. Based on a true story, it
follows the unlikely friendship between Philippe, a rich
paraplegic aristocrat, and Driss, his young, streetwise
senegalese carer. as the two men grow closer, Driss’s
carefree attitude and playful sense of humour help
Philippe to rediscover the joy in life.
one of the most strikingly original films to emerge in
recent years is this captivating fable set in an isolated
Louisiana delta community. hushpuppy, a feisty
six-year-old with a keen imagination, lives there with
her father, whose health is deteriorating. as global
warming melts the icecaps, water levels begin to rise
and mythical creatures called aurochs are released
from their icy homes. Using all that life has taught
her, hushpuppy resolves to save her father, her
community, and perhaps even the planet.
after the triumph of ‘war horse’ comes another
Michael Morpurgo adaptation, which is also set in rural
communities of the west country and the battlefields
of ww1. tommo had always been close to his brother
charlie, but when charlie falls for Molly, who tommo
had been in love with from the moment he met her,
he is heartbroken. when they are called to the front,
they must put this behind them and help each other
through the horrors of war. Producer Guy Beauseu
will introduce the screening on Monday 21 January.
Paul thomas anderson follows the tour de force of
‘there will Be Blood’ with another ambitious period
piece. freddie Quell returns from wwii traumatised
and unable to adapt to civilian life. everything
changes when he meets the charismatic leader of
an organisation that claims to cleanse the mind of
imperfection. But as freddie is brought deeper into the
fold, he begins to question its validity. a mesmerising
drama, its searing performances and virtuoso direction
will take you in and not let go.
old technology meets new in tim Burton’s latest
masterpiece, as black and white stop frame animation
gets a 3D makeover in this horror spoof, lovingly crafted
in the style of a 1950s B-movie. after unexpectedly
hugo weaving
the silent Bollywood film that everyone is talking
about, Barfi! is an enchanting and endlessly inventive
slapstick caper, bursting with colour, music and
delightful visual comedy. for Barfi, there are many
obstacles to true love, but the fact that he is deaf mute
is not one of them. from the 1970s to the present
day, we follow his romantic entanglements with two
women, which unfolds in a series of chaplin-esque set
pieces including chases, ladders, handcarts, trains and
his very own Keystone cop.
simon lives with his sister in a drab housing complex
below a luxury ski resort, which he regularly visits
to steal from the tourists. his sister is much older,
but he is the adult in the relationship, doing what is
necessary for them to survive. this happy equilibrium
will be upset when a dark secret resurfaces. spirited
performances and expressive cinematography make
this an impressive addition to the ‘wayward child’
subgenre of world cinema, recalling ‘the 400 Blows’,
‘Kes’ and the work of Belgium’s Dardenne Brothers.
following ‘the white ribbon’, Michael haneke picked
up his second Palm d’or at cannes with this heartwrenching
story of love and death. anne and george are
a happy retired couple in their eighties. when anne has a
stroke, george insists on caring for her at home. as anne
slowly fades away, so george’s love for her is tested.
emmanuelle riva turns in one of the most affecting and
poignant performances you will see this year in a film
that is both tender and devastatingly powerful.
Peter Jackson’s the hobbit is finally with us. this first
instalment of a new trilogy follows Bilbo Baggins on a
journey to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of
dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the
dragon smaug. Jackson recreates tolkien’s Middleearth
using the same mix of breathtaking New Zealand
locations and cgi technology as his ‘Lord of the rings’
trilogy, and retains much of the cast, including ian
McKellen’s gandalf and andy serkis’ memorable turn
as gollum.
London 1962, and ginger and rosa, friends since
childhood, are enjoying teenage life, playing truant
from school, discussing religion, politics and hairstyles,
and dreaming of a life bigger than their mothers’
frustrated domesticity. the ’60s are beginning to
swing, but as the cold war gets colder, ideological
differences and a clash of desires threatens to pull
them apart. tackling many of the same issues as
2009’s ‘an education’, it is a superbly acted evocation
of a young woman’s political and sexual awakening.
recalling oscar winner ‘the Lives of others’, Barbara
follows the fortunes of a young doctor in 1980s east
germany, who has been exiled to a remote country
hospital as punishment for a crime against the state.
while her husband in the west plots to smuggle her
out of the country, she starts to develop feelings for
the hospital’s head physician. a gripping study of cold
war paranoia, which subtly cranks up the tension as it
builds towards an extremely satisfying conclusion.
the much-loved charles Dickens classic gets another
big screen adaptation, with ravishing production values
and a top-draw cast including helen Bonham carter
as Miss havisham, ralph fiennes as Magwitch and
brothers toby and Jeremy irvine as the young and
old Pip. the story of a humble orphan who becomes
a gentleman with the help of a mystery benefactor is
brought magically to life under the inspired direction of
Mike Newell, who masterfully captures the mysterious
and unsettling tone of the novel.
colin firth plays a hapless art curator turned thief
in this remake of the 1966 crime caper that starred
Michael caine and shirley McLain. as revenge against
his abusive boss, he comes up with a plan to sell him
a fake Monet. But he can’t do it without the help of
an eccentric and unpredictable rodeo queen who
bears an uncanny resemblance to his affluent target’s
late wife. also starring cameron Diaz and everyone’s
favourite baddie alan rickman, with a hilarious script
from the coen brothers.
the long gestating project to bring Yann Martel’s
extraordinary magical realist novel to the big screen
finally comes to fruition under the guiding hand of ang
Lee, and it’s been worth the wait. the story of a young
indian boy who survives a disaster at sea and finds
himself cast adrift with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and a
Bengal tiger works both as a thrilling fantasy adventure
and a deeper exploration of faith, survival and the very
nature of storytelling.
Brilliantly fusing comedy and drama, this crowdpleasing
romance centres on a man who bounces
back from rock bottom through the love of a good,
albeit slightly loopy, woman. after losing everything
and spending eight months in a mental institution, Pat
moves back in with his parents. he finds a kindred spirit
in the slightly unhinged tiffany, who slowly helps him
reconnect with life. a razor-sharp script and hugely
entertaining performances make this a sure-fire
awards contender.
charlotte rampling stars as an enigmatic femme
fatale in this atmospheric psychological thriller. after
a disastrous attempt at speed dating, anna has a
brief encounter with a jaded detective, who starts
stalking her. they eventually begin a relationship, but
the boundaries between work and pleasure blur as
twists and turns reveal anna’s dark history. Directed by
rampling’s son Barnaby southcombe as an homage
to classic film noir, London is beautifully rendered as a
twilight world where nobody is quite what they seem.
Marion cotillard looks set for her second oscar
nomination for her moving performance as a
paraplegic woman whose faith in life is restored
through an unlikely relationship. stephanie is a
successful killer whale trainer at an aqua park. when
she loses the use of her legs in a tragic accident,
she turns to nightclub bouncer ali for support and a
tenuous courtship begins. a bold, passionate and
richly rewarding story of tough love from the director
of ‘a Prophet’.
thomas Vinterberg delivers his best film since the
award-winning ‘festen’, a tense psychological drama
about the dangers of mob mentality. Lucas is a warmhearted,
well-liked nursery teacher who is trying to
rebuild his life after a messy divorce. things start to go
terribly wrong when a five-year-old girl makes a false
accusation of abuse and the tight-knit community
anchored by a harrowing performance from
Mads Mikkelsen.
mysterious power that will help them navigate through
epic and vibrant as the great country it celebrates.
the film they are calling the ‘aboriginal Dreamgirls’ is
following last year’s much-loved ‘the Best exotic
comedy set in a retirement home, this time a
countryside residence for retired opera singers. the
arrival of an aging diva sends ripples of discontentment
around the building, but they must put their differences
of seasoned British thesps, including tom courtenay,
Billy connolly, Pauline collins and Michael gambon.
and complex, with a lingering aftertaste.
recreated in astonishingly vivid detail in this gripping
and unforgettable disaster movie. Based on a real life
story, it follows a married couple as they search for
it follows Prisoner 24601, known as Jean Valjean, who
the touching, hilarious and life-affirming true story
spent much of his life confined to an iron lung. at the
age of 36, he is determined to lose his virginity and,
after consulting a priest and a therapist, engages the
services of a sex surrogate. acclaimed actor John
hawkes is superb as the witty, charismatic o’Brien, who
never let his disability get the better of him, and helen
hunt excels as the straight-talking surrogate who finds
herself falling for his infectious charm.
in May of 2011, Neil Young drove a 1956 crown Victoria
downtown toronto’s iconic Massey hall where he
introspective stories from his youth to filmmaker and
fan Jonathan Demme. weaving these stories together
with songs from Young’s impressive body of work,
Demme portrays a personal, retrospective look into
the heart and soul of the artist.
it was a foregone conclusion that Quentin tarantino,
the ultimate fanboy director, would eventually make
a spaghetti western, and it looks like he’s done it in
fine style. oh-so-loosely based on sergio corbucci’s
1966 cult classic ‘Django’ (which spawned over 30
sequels), it focuses on a slave-turned-bounty hunter
who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi
plantation owner. expect expertly choreographed
shootouts with plenty of ketchup, Mexican standoffs,
side-splitting banter and brilliant use of music.
Picking up roughly where ‘the King’s speech’ finished,
this whimsical comedy tells of King george Vi’s visit
to Us President franklin D roosevelt to ask for his
support in the impending war. seen through the eyes
of roosevelt’s distant cousin, with whom he was
secretly having an affair, the film playfully depicts the
culture clash and domestic strife of an unforgettable
summer’s weekend that will create not one but two
special relationships. Bill Murray is wonderful as fDr,
with an excellent supporting cast.
steven spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis make a
formidable partnership to take on the story of the 16th
President of america. focusing on the last four months
of his life, Lincoln struggles with the continuing carnage
in the civil war as he fights with many inside his own
cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.
after the bombast of his previous two oscarcontending
performances, Day-Lewis turns in a
surprisingly delicate yet authoritative portrayal of the
softly-spoken president.
the writer/director team behind the oscar winning
‘the hurt Locker’ revisit the war on terror with this
powerful chronicle of the decade-long hunt for osama
Bin Laden. following 9/11, an elite team of intelligence
and military operatives, working in secret across the
globe, devoted themselves to his capture. even though
the outcome is known, this riveting and revealing
exposé of the political and military machinations
behind the world’s biggest manhunt will have you on
