Meet Jose Ruiz
An Inspiring Message from One of Our Kids
I never thought that I would actually be up on the stage at Artfest...I
usually volunteer behind the scenes. Our Boys & Girls Club, and the
family that comes along with it, really has done so much for me. I have
had so many amazing experiences here. The staff and friends have all
contributed to the young man standing here before you.
For me, the Club is a place where I can be myself and have a great
time...
Letter
Zane Smith
Awarded
Executive of
The Year
.........................................................
Our very own Zane Smith was
named Executive of the Year for
the Pacific Region (over 900 clubs
in the 7 states) of the Boys & Girls
Clubs of America. The following
letter was the nomination as
submitted to the Pacific Region
Leadership Team.
Congratulations to Zane and his
family, and to our
Boys & Girls Clubs family here in
Kern County!
From the Boys & Girls Clubs
I am writing in support of the nomination of Zane Smith as Executive of the Year. It is hard to imagine
a better recipient than Zane.
I have known Zane since the mid-1990s, when I first joined the board of the local Boys & Girls Club
soon after Zane had been hired as its Executive Director. At that time, the Club served a few dozen
children with a handful of employees out of an old, rundown building on a shoestring budget. Now the
Club serves nearly 5,000 children at 52 locations on a $4.5 million budget. How did the Club get from
there to here? There is a long answer involving the construction of a new main site, the leasing of other
sites, entering into contracts with local school districts, putting together a great staff of employees, and
extensive fundraising. But the short answer is Zane.
In the late 1990s, Zane, with help from the board and community, obtained the necessary financing
and oversaw the construction of a new facility. That facility, which is large enough to serve over 200
children at a time, has served as the Club’s main site since its construction. Zane also has located
other sites to lease in Bakersfield and local communities. This has enabled the Club to serve children it
could not otherwise reach, including those in small communities with few programs for kids.
Over the last few years, Zane has turned his relationships with local school district officials and
his knowledge of government funding into contracts to provide afterschool programs. Under these
contracts, the Club provides programs to over 4,500 additional students on nearly 50 school campuses.
The administrative fee included in the contract price also has greatly improved the Club’s finances.
Zane has thus dramatically increased the number of children the Club serves, while improving the
Club’s finances. When Zane was hired, the Club’s finances were in dire straits. In fact, there were times
Zane would forego his own salary or benefits to keep the doors open. Under Zane’s leadership, the
Club has shored up its finances in three primary ways.
First, the Club has greatly expanded its fundraising efforts. The Club holds annual events such as a
golf tournament, a wonderful event in the mountains with wine and food called “Heart of the Mountain,”
and Artfest, the Club’s signature event that is centered on auctioning works of art created by the Club’s
members. In addition, Zane and other employees assist other nonprofits with their fundraising events.
As a result, the Club not only gets a share of the proceeds, but it helps enhance the Club’s “brand” in
the community. These fundraising events initiated under Zane’s leadership have been crucial to the
Club’s financial survival.
Second, Zane has built a personal relationship with local donors. Zane’s sincerity, personality, and
instincts are vital to cultivating those relationships. Without Zane’s personal efforts, the Club would not

eceive nearly as much in personal donations. Third, as stated above, Zane has been
able to obtain contracts with local school districts. The administrative fee included in
the contracts has greatly helped the Club’s finances. The Club has been able to grow
because of its reputation and programs. The Club’s reputation and programs result
from the dedication, creativity, and hard work of the Club’s employees under Zane’s
leadership. Zane provides the necessary direction to the Club’s employees, and then he
gives them the freedom to make it happen, always crediting the employees themselves
for the Club’s accomplishments.
An executive director also cannot work better with a board than Zane. I have served
on the board for six years over two stints, including as the current president. Zane has
always acted with the appropriate deference to the board, keeping us informed and
implementing the board’s decisions. Zane not only has my personal utmost respect, but
that of the other board members as well.
Thank you for considering Zane’s nomination as Executive of the Year. I cannot
imagine a better candidate.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey W. Noe
The New Suburu Club
...............................................................................................................................
When our friends at the YMCA
announced publicly that they would be
closing their doors, we only had a brief
moment to mourn this loss because,
instantly, our phone rang. It’s amazing the
things that can and cannot wait. You can
wait to wash your car, change a light bulb,
get the dog groomed, or fix the disposal.
You can never wait when it comes to
the needs of children. We immediately
reached out to the Executive Director at
the YMCA to let him know parents were
contacting us and to find out how we
could help. He shared that he and his
staff were referring YMCA families to us
for service and confirmed that their afterschool
program at Suburu School (part
of Lakeside School District) would have
to be cancelled unless the Boys & Girls
Club could establish a partnership with the
school district.
We contacted Gary
Mullen, Superintendent of
Lakeside School District
the same day to see if
there was something the
Boys & Girls Club could
do to fill the gap in service
that would occur in just a
few short weeks with the
first day of school rapidly
approaching. Gary agreed
to allow us to submit a
proposal. We received the
“green light” three weeks
before the doors were to open for the first
day of school and we were told to plan
for approximately 40 children. With the
enthusiastic support of Principal Sandy
Ramay and school staff, we were able to
get our classrooms in order, host a parent
meeting, and enroll over 75 children for
the before and after-school program.
It is wonderful how quickly people
will rally around children. We have had
a tremendous response from Suburu
families. The school staff welcomed us
with open arms and generous hospitality.
Our Board provided the seed money and
moral support to take on this project. We
value our new collaboration with Lakeside
School District and with great respect;
we recognize the YMCA’s actions of
putting children first under such difficult
circumstances.
BGC BRIEF / FALL 2012 bgclubsofkerncounty.org 5

Jose Ruiz
Finding Friends and Inspiration at The Club
My name is Jose Ruiz and I am a proud member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. I’d like to take a moment to
thank my mentor, Natalie Martinez, for cheering me on and for making so many of my dreams come true.
I never thought that I would actually be up on the stage at Artfest...I usually volunteer behind the scenes. Our Boys & Girls Club,
and the family that comes along with it, really has done so much for me. I have had so many amazing experiences here. The staff and
friends have all contributed to the young man standing here before you.
For me, the Club is a place where I can be myself and have a great time. I am surrounded by encouragement, affection, and a sense
of belonging. I have been given a lot of opportunities to do things that I never thought possible. Through our leadership development
club known as Keystone, I have attended conferences and traveled to other states to meet with kids from across the country. I have
visited college campuses that I never even heard about or considered for my education. I have met community leaders that taught me
new things and showed me all of the things that I can be as a future leader in my community.
I recently got to travel to Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center with my friend Julian and one of my Club Mentors - Justin
Ahart. I got to meet Olympic Champions, made new friends with kids from all over the nation, and I got to have an Olympic Training

experience...I know what you’re thinking....
no, I didn’t hurt my knee trying to beat
a world record...my mom purposely
scheduled my knee surgery for after the
trip so I wouldn’t miss out on Colorado!
As I worked on this message, I kept
asking myself, “what could I tell you that
would help you understand the importance
of my Boys & Girls Clubs.” Everything
comes back to what would kids like me
do without the Club? Where would we
go? How many children would make bad
choices? How many of us would feel
lost? Where would we build
robots with our friends from
Chevron? Where would we get
to volunteer like we do at San
Joaquin Hospital? Who would
help us finish our homework,
teach us to paint, keep us safe
on the internet and help our
dreams come true?
The Club is a commitment.
You don’t just walk in and
things are handed to you. As
hard as our staff works, the
kids work just as hard. We
are expected to show respect.
We are expected to get good
grades. We are expected
to have a good attitude. We
are expected to pitch in when
someone needs help. We are
expected to represent the Club
when we go on field trips. We
are expected to be role models. We are
expected to play, have fun and be the best
Boys & Girls Club member we can be. We
are expected to do a lot for what we get...
but that’s what life is all about.
Now why the Boys & Girls Club? Where
can I go - where I am the most popular kid
around? Where can I go to be accepted
for who I am and where I come from?
Where can I go that I make a difference in
a big way? Where can I go that my voice
is heard? Where can I go that is exciting
and makes me think anything is possible?
I will tell you...it’s at the Club! Last year,
my mother, my brother and I moved to
North of the River which is a big distance
from the Club. The staff encouraged us
to keep coming and arranged bus passes
to get to and from the Club. It isn’t easy
- I get out of school and have to run for
the bus...now it’s kind of a fast hobble,
I ride the bus with my brother for about
45 minutes and work on homework. Get
to the Club...go to some activities or
meetings, or chill with friends...then it is
back on the bus for the ride home. I feel
like I’m going to a job because I want
to get there on time and I know that if I
don’t, I will be missed. The bus isn’t fun...
not just because of the homework, but
because it takes so long to get to the Club
and I can’t always find a seat. For me, the
Club is worth it...because it is where I want
to be and where I know that no matter
what has happened during my day...the
Club will be there to make me feel better.
As a member of the Club, I am expected
to go to college. The Club helps you
figure out how to get there from wherever
you are coming from. I have learned
about financial aid, I have learned about
scholarships, I have learned that college is
Where can I go to be
accepted for who I
am and where I come
from? Where can I go
that I make a difference
in a big way? Where
can I go that my voice
is heard? Where can I
go that is exciting and
makes me think anything
is possible? I will tell
you...it’s at the Club!
possible. I plan on studying business and
because I love fixing cars...I hope to one
day open my own repair shop. The Club
is trying to connect me with a really good
mentor who owns his own repair business
and has kids that attend the Club. If I
succeed, someday I want to mentor kids
at the Club and fix the Clubs vans for free
so the Club can take kids on field trips.
I was recently asked what one thing
touches your heart at the Club - I had
to really think about this for a long time
because there are so many things that
happen every day. Then I realized
what it was... a van goes everyday to
the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter and
brings the kids that live there back to the
Club all day to have fun for the summer,
Christmas and spring vacations. Without
this program for the homeless shelter
kids, I would never have even heard of the
Boys & Girls Club, become a member and
would not be standing before you.
Thank you for allowing me to share with
you my Boys & Girls Club experience.
