New moon discovered
orbiting Pluto
THE WORLD THIS WEEK
Scientists studying data from
the Hubble Space Telescope
have found a fifth moon
orbiting the dwarf planet Pluto.
It was seen in images taken in
June and earlier this month. The
new moon is just a speck in images,
so scientists will only get
more information when NASA’s
New Horizons probe sends
back detailed images of the Plu-
to system in 2015. Until 2006,
Charon was Pluto’s only known
moon. That year, Nix and Hydra
were discovered, followed by
P4, in 2011. — Agencies
WALTER WINCHELL A FRIEND IS ONE WHO WALKS IN WHEN OTHERS WALK OUT
Garter snakes are very
small and thin snakes
with three longitudinal
stripes in many
different colours. The
name ‘Garter’ comes from the
comparison of these snakes to the
fancy garters that were used years
ago to hold men’s socks. These
snakes are fast, alert and
intelligent.
Garter snakes are docile and
harmless to people, though they
may bite in self-defence. When
alarmed, they may coil and strike,
many flatten their bodies, making
the stripes on their back more
prominent. They also discharge
musk, which has an unpleasant,
sweetish odour, from glands at the
base of the tail.
Characteristics
Garter snakes have slim and agile
body. They have dark and distinguishable
head. These snakes
can differ in appearance from region
to region. Their colouring
can be of many shades of green,
blue, yellow, gold, red, orange,
brown, and black. But generally,
they have three stripes on their
backs, one down the centre and
one on either side of it. These
stripes run the length of the
snake’s body and can be blue,
green, yellow or white. Garter
snakes have hard, dry scales and
are cold-blooded. Underneath
their scaly skin, snakes have internal
organs and bones like those of
other vertebrates. The backwardpointing
teeth and throat muscles
are used to work the prey slowly
down into the stomach.
The red and black, forked
tongue of these snakes is used as a
detection device. They pop out
animal
stories
their tongue to collect chemicals
in the air. They then place their
tongue back into mouth and insert
the fork into a special organ,
called the Jacobson’s organ, on the
roof of their mouth. The snake
uses this process to detect scents
like pheromones from other
snakes and their next meal. They
also gather information about
their environment from their
sense of smell.
Garter snakes are one of the few
snakes that give birth to live
young. Females give birth to
about 20 to 30 young, but 85 have
been born in one litter. The young
snakes are on their own immediately
after birth. They are 7.5 to 9
inches long and are fully capable
GARTER SNAKES
of hunting. They reach maturity in
three years.
Size
The length of garter snakes
ranges from 20 to 30 inches although
some may be longer.
Feeding Habits
Garter snakes are opportunistic
hunters. They will eat almost any
animal that they can catch. Their
main foods are earthworms, frogs,
fish, leeches, tadpoles and sometimes
mice. They also eat snails,
crickets, grasshoppers and birds.
Venom of these snakes is neurotoxic,
slowing down the movement
of a prey animal while it is
consumed.
Habitat
Garter snakes are most commonly
found in Canada and central
United States. They are found
in parks, meadows and woodlands,
wherever there are ponds
and streams nearby. They live in
colder temperatures and they
need to hibernate in winter. They
will find shelter in cracks in the
ground where the frost doesn’t
reach.
Lifespan
Garter snakes live for two years
in the wild and six to 10 years in
captivity. — Agencies
Childhood days
Many years ago
When we were in junior class
How we used to play
together
In the playground everyday.
It seems like yesterday
Our childhood world
Of ice-creams and cotton
candies
In the hot summer days
That we wished never to
end.
When we played cricket all
day long
And those talks
About our dreams and future
Until we get tired.
But all those days have
passed so fast
And we are left alone
But still I want those days
back again
Can’t those days return?
The Chronicles of Narnia
sold for £30,000
An original copy of a book
from The Chronicles of
Narnia signed by the author
CS Lewis has been sold at
an auction. The winning bidder
paid £30,000 for the
book which was one of the
first to have been printed
around 1950. It was signed ‘Jack
Lewis’ which is rare — Jack was
the nickname CS Lewis used with
close friends and family. The stories
of Peter, Susan, Edmund and
Lucy were bestsellers for over 50
years.
THE HIMALAYAN TIMES, SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 2012
In the first story —
The Lion, The Witch
and The Wardrobe
— they find their
way into a magical
land called Narnia
through the back of
a wardrobe. They
have to battle a
witch, but are saved
by Aslan the lion.
The story was made into theatre
productions, TV dramas, and in
2005 became a Hollywood movie.
Two more Narnia movies were
made — Prince Caspian in 2008
and Voyage of the Dawn Treader
in 2010. — Agencies
My best friend
Resha is very naughty but a little
haughty
Very talented, it’s a guarantee
Beautiful with her nose big
Handwriting so nice and loving to
cheat
She always shouts at others
But never bothers
She has a clever sister and no
brother
Talking too much with her big
mouth
With her two best friends who cry
when she leaves
Without her the class is silent
Waiting for laughter when she is
upset
Her hair is curly which remains
short all the year
But when her sister pulls it, it
becomes bare
Then, Resha realises that she
should never pull others’ hair
She always stands first in her class
with her nose red
But never compromises to become
late
She is always ready who is never
slow and steady
She is very hard-working and
sometimes funny
Who asks ideas for others to make
her hair a stare
She plays games by sitting and
loves chatting
And always dreams of being
successful
She does not need her legs to run
When she is caught by a don.
I’m missing all my beloved friends.
