Agenda:
t was the best of times, it was the worst of times — a
phrase written many years ago, but as history is said to
Irepeat itself, that phrase constantly repeats itself as well.
Since our last publication, much has occurred and much
more will never see print. People will, or may be mentioned
herein, yet others, many more, will be remembered, but
never mentioned. I attribute that not to whether one occurrence
or event is more important than another, but actually
to how the remembrance comes alive again in my mind
while writing. Therefore, if something is left out, or a person
is not referred to, please remember the original event was
the moment.
Since my last article, Lady Hope and I have been
extremely busy and have traveled extensively throughout the
jurisdiction of Khartum, and, as well, outside of our region.
In February, your Divan hosted a meeting at which Mr.
Victor Drury, the Campaign Director for Shriners Hospital
for Children, Canada, spoke to us in regard to the progress
of the new hospital that we, the Shriners, are building in
Montreal. This is a new fundraising project, which is looking
for $28 million, representing funds required from the
Canadian Shrine Centers — $25 million towards the building
itself, and the remainder towards a seat on the research
committee at McGill University. We, nobles, have been
asked for a pledge of $230,000 over a ten-year span, based on
our membership and previous contributions. Your Divan
eagerly approved that pledge, since those funds were available
in our Transportation accounts, and that item was
thereafter confirmed by the membership.
In May, our Assistant Rabban Rick Holberg and his
All nobles are reminded of the following Stated Meetings:
Illustrious Sir Harry Rosenbaum, Potentate/CEO
Illustrious Sir Jack Hooper, P. P., Recorder
Lady Georgette, and myself and my Lady Hope, attended the
2012 Hospital Conference in Montreal, where we had the pleasure
of presenting the firstinstallment of $23,000 to the Chairman
of the Board of Governors. Nobles, this facility will be a
state-of-the-art edifice and will be completed in 2015. You are
all responsible for a small piece of it. Congratulations and a
job well done.
I have advised some of my clients to agree to donate to
Khartum Shriners upon their death, thereby helping
Khartum Shriners financially. We must remember to remind
the people we know, that donations through testamentary
bequests are always thankfully accepted, and an excellent
way of continuing one’s presence amongst us.
The Pipes & Drums unit, accompanied by myself and
Illustrious Sir Ray Bell, P. P., again sojourned to Sioux Falls
SD, El Riad Shriners country, to participate in their annual St.
Patrick's Day parade. The band again lead the parade,
Potentate . . . continued from page 4
following myself; Illustrious Sir Ray Bell, P. P.; and Illustrious
Sir Don Jensen, Potentate of El Riad Shriners, who
accompanied them in holding the unit banner. The streets of
the center of the city were lined by thousands of onlookers
who enjoyed every moment. Our Pipes & Drums not only
participated in the parade, but were busy barnstorming at
numerous hospitals and schools as well.
In March, Lady Hope and I and several Divan members
and their ladies had the pleasure of attending the Daughters
of the Nile, Sphinx Temple No. 116, installation ceremonies,
wherein Queen Patti Hillier assumed the chair of office. The
following week, your Divan had the pleasure of hosting the
Honored Ladies Luncheon, which was a sight to see. The
chairman, our Director Bert Manalang, and Lady Tina,
remarkably transformed our activity room into a scene out
of a celebrity wedding. Great job indeed, and I am passing
on the accolades I received on your behalf.
These were a few of the events we attended. Others we
attended on behalf of Khartum Shriners were the Ladies
Auxiliary meeting at the Rehabilitation Hospital and the
Potentate’s Ball in Bismarck ND. While there, we also
attended a Hospital Screening Clinic sponsored by the Twin
Cities Hospital.
Lady Hope and I also attended the installation ceremonies
of the officers of Winnipeg Chapter of the Order of the
Eastern Star, wherein the Grand Matron, Nanette McGill,
and Grand Patron, Barry Homenick, were installed. Later in
May, we were accompanied by our Recorder, Illustrious Sir
Jack Hooper, P. P., and Lady Faye, and attended the Grand
Session for the Order of the Eastern Star, an excellent display
of what can be accomplished when one rehearses.
We also attended the Gathering of the Clans and the annual
Donkey Races. I also traveled to several circuses from Thunder
Bay to Brandon. I thank Chief Rabban Andrew Skene and
-5-
Oriental Guide Jack Hildebrand who filled in for me at the Flin
Flon and Norway House circuses while Noble Rick Holberg
and I were in Montreal at the Hospital Conference.
Speaking about the circus, we give a great big thank
you to Circus Chairman Kevin Davis for a job well done . He
had never been on the Circus Committee before this year
and did a superb job. We will see great things in that area in
the future. While I am thanking a first timer, let me as well
thank Noble Hamish Barrit, who has assumed the role of
Chairman for our major fundraiser for Khartum Shriners
for 2012, the raffle of a 2012 Hyundai Sonata hybrid vehicle.
Lady Hope and I attended the Grand Lodge of Manitoba
communication, at which I had the pleasure of seeing
one great friend, M.W. Bro. Chibu Uson, step out of the
office of Grand Master, while another, M.W. Bro. Al Hadley,
assumed that high office. This was also the first time a
potentate had the pleasure of placing a grand master’s fez
upon his head at his installation before anyone else was
installed. I shall remember that moment forever. Immediately
after the fezzing, his first order of business was to permit
me to leave, so that I would be able to meet up with
Lady Hope and Oriental Guide Jack Hildebrand and Lady
Lynne to attend the Potentate’s Ball for Kem Shriners in
Grand Forks ND. The following day, the four of us, together
with fourteen other members of the Divan and ladies, met
in La Riviere MB to attend and help out at the Pembina Valley
Shrine Club fish fry, which was a huge success. I understand
that about 600 people were served that afternoon.
Without the help from our Divan, this could not have been
The following week, thirty-one individuals participated
in the Twin Cities Hospital Bus Tour, chaired by Illustrious
Sir Jack Hooper, P. P., and assisted by Lady Faye (who did
most of the work). We toured the hospital and spoke with the
staff—a reawakening of what we do as Shriners, and why we
do it. We also thank Illustrious Sir Frank Spevak, Potentate;
and Illustrious Sir Jim Berg, P. P., of Osman Shriners, for
arranging a magic show by a fantastic artist who performed
in Las Vegas and on America Has Talent. It’s surprising how
Lady Hope and I, together with Illustrious Sir Frank Spevak
and Lady Joan, had occasion to travel together to attend the
Ceremonial and Potentate’s Ball for Zor Shriners in New
Rockwell WI, while the rest attended the Mall of America
and took a Mississippi river tour.
Now that summer is upon us, so are the various parades.
The first I attended was in Boissevain MB accompanied by
the Brandon Shrine Club, who came out in full force to show
our colors as Shriners.
Lastly, nobles and ladies, let me again thank you so much for
all you do to support Khartum Shriners. Without your support,
we would be unable to accomplish all that we do for our kids.
Please continue to remember, that we do what we do, for
the love of a child. God Bless.
don’t hesitate to get your tickets early,
be a Chinese auction, draws, lots of fun
Hospital Report
By Noble Craig Houston, Khartum Hospital Chairman
he Khartum Shriners Hospital
program is still as busy as ever.
TBy the end of June, we will have
sent physically challenged children
104 times to our “Temples of Mercy” in
Montreal, Minneapolis, Boston, and
Chicago. We will also have sent one
patient to Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital
for surgery on the advice of
Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada,
Montreal, medical staff.
Costs incurred to date are $48,000,
not including the $23,000 which was
presented, on behalf of Khartum, by
Illustrious Sir Harry Rosenbaum,
Potentate, Khartum Shriners, to the
Board of Governors of Shriners Hospitals
for Children Canada, Montreal,
during his recent visit there in May.
Khartum Shriners have committed to
donate $230,000 over the next ten years
to the new hospital building project .
We also presented a cheque in May
2011 for $100,000 towards the “Endowed
Francis Glorieux Chair in Musculoskeletal
Research.” We at Khartum
have given a reasonable amount
towards the $127 million required for
the new hospital.
Another Small Miracle Evolves at
Shriners Hospitals for Children
Canada, Montreal
This is Luke’s second time at
Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada,
Montreal, and this time it is for surgery
to have the Ilizerov device
implanted.
Below is Jocelyn’s (Luke’s mother)
first report of the visit to Montreal, similar
to what many parents are thinking
about whose children we are privileged
to send to our Temples of Mercy so that
they can have a better quality in life.
"The last few days have been long ones.
But we want to say a very big thank you
to those of you who have been thinking,
praying, and supporting us in various
ways. We have truly felt the love and support
of many and we have not felt alone.
For those of you who attended the
Niverville fundraiser for our family —
thank you!! We were blessed beyond what
words can express.
To those of you who have sent or are
sending Luke encouragement of some sort,
we are excited to encourage him along in
-8-
this journey. . . thank you!
Thursday was filled with pre-op
appointments. It went well and Luke almost
seemed excited (in his words, "I like this
place") to be here in this hospital for a couple
weeks (we are still not sure how many days
exactly). The hospital is equipped with
video games, TV, snacks of choice, play
room, good food, and amazing staff. It is a
very different experience compared to most
hospitals. The Shriners do know how to
do it right I have to say! We got a night
pass and we were able to go back to the hotel
to enjoy a swim and for Sherwood to recover
more (he has been fighting some virus).
Friday morning we were up bright and
early. We made it to the hospital by 6:30
(5:30 our time). Everything went smooth
and we felt Luke was at peace until the last
ten minutes or so. Any parent who has ever
walked through surgery with a child knows
that the hardest part is often passing them
over at the doors to the operating room. This
again rang true for us yesterday as Luke didn’t
want to let us go.
The surgery went well. They finished a
half hour early. It was scheduled for three to
four hours. They did not have to cut bone at
this point. They just cut soft tissue and
placed on the Ilizerov device. They had said
he has fifteen pins going through his leg and
foot. But I only seem to count eleven this
morning. Luke slept until the evening and
,
woke asking about the Jets and to play Wii.
Hospital Report . . continued from page 8
The night was one I was dreading as we
have had past experience that maybe drilled
some fear into us. But he did amazingly
well. Which is a blessing and answer to
prayer. The main medication would have
worn off some time during the night. He
remains on morphine, Tylenol, antiinflammatory
drugs, and antibiotics.
So now we wait and continue to pray.
For what you may ask . . . these would be the
concerns:
1. That they would continue to manage his
medications well.
2. That infection would not occur (as these
are open sores where the pins go in).
3. Peace in the journey for Luke. As this
device remains on for three months and followed
by casts for three months.
4. Strength as they do the tightening of pins
(this is a daily occurrence which can be
dreaded).
5. General health (for Luke and our family).
6. That they would get the correction they
need to get in the next three months so that
they do not have to go back and cut bone at
the end of the three months prior to the three
months of casting.
7. Final prayer request would be that as
Luke's foot gets gradually placed into this
new straight, hopefully pain-free position
that it would stay in place permanently
(not curve again as this can happen).
8. Oh . . . and grace for the weekly flights for
Sherwood and Luke as they fly out to Montreal
every Sunday for a Monday appointment
for three months.
Again, thanks for all your love and
care. We truly have felt God giving us peace
beyond our understanding. Love, Jocelyn,
Sherwood, Luke, Isaiah, Elijah and
Jayden.”
Luke after surgery
Only through the eyes of a family
do we get the real stories of Shriners
Hospitals for Children’s small
miracles. Luke has successfully come
through his surgery and is making
good progress. On April 3, I received
this message from his dad (Sherwood).
Dear Mr Houston:
Here are some photos I took this morning, it
had been hard work, but Luke is doing so
well. The physiotherapist is the best we've
ever had. She had Luke doing things that he
winces at when we try on our own (and he
even looks forward to the new challenges
each day).
The school is also very special. His
teacher came in at 5:30 A.M. yesterday to be
with a girl who was having surgery — it is
obviously more than a job to her.
I feel that the school is helping Luke's
mind, but more importantly, nurturing his
heart during a delicate time.
All this means more to us than words
could ever describe. Thank you for opening
this door which will give my son a gift of
more freedom.
In deep appreciation,
Sherwood again e-mailed me
another photograph of Luke painting
the toenails of one of his nurses. In his
e-mail he noted:
“Only at Shriners." The nurse let Luke
paint his toe nails as payback for pulling out
Luke's stitches. What a great guy. Just like
you say, it's all about kids.
Finally, Luke was discharged and
when he arrived home, all his friends
were outside his house to greet him
Normally, when patients have the
Ilizarov surgery, they must stay in Montreal
for a couple of months to complete
the various surgery programs. But, in
talking with Dr. Hamdy, Chief of Staff
at Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada,
Montreal, (he was also Luke’s surgeon),
it was decided that Luke could
go back every two weeks for checkups
and physiotherapy, while Dad was
given the task of being chief nurse at
home. Thanks to the generosity of
WestJet, there was no problem in flying
Luke and his dad out several times (out
one day and back the next).
During the last visit in April, CTV
Montreal advised that they wanted to
do a program about the schooling set
up in Shriners Hospitals for Children
Canada, Montreal, and that Luke
would be featured in this event. When
Sherwood advised me of this, it
dawned on me that this would be a
good opportunity to get CTV Winnipeg
involved in the picture and work along
with CTV Montreal.. Our Public Relations
Chairman, Ross Holt, alerted CTV
Winnipeg, and in discussions with
them and the powers that be in Montreal
Hospital, I was able to give CTV
Winnipeg the story of Luke, and they
interviewed the family at their home.
CTV Winnipeg also came to the airport
to film our sending Luke and his Dad
off to Montreal, with his Mother
Jocelyn and siblings Isaiah and Elijah in
attendance.
CTV Montreal did their interviewing
on the schooling while Luke was in
Montreal and the combined segment
was put together and shown on CTV
Winnipeg on the 6 P.M. news on Friday,
May 11, 2012, and on CTV Montreal on
Monday, May 21. Both segments were
well put together.
On their arrival back in Winnipeg
from Montreal, our two faithful
Komedians, Bobo and Todo, were on
hand to greet them. Thanks, nobles. If
you attended the first show of the Winnipeg
Circus, you would have seen
Luke as the Honorary Ringmaster.
working on the final drawings, and will
be going out for bids shortly. The construction
Oriental Band
By Noble Bernie Gross
reetings from the members of the
Oriental Band and their ladies to
Gall Khartum nobles. The reason the
Oriental Band ladies are included in this
message is that they fully support the members
of the Band and receive little recognition.
So it is a small matter to offer them a little
attention and recognition by including
them in this message.
The Band members have decided that
we will participate in the parades at
Pinawa, Gimli, and Morden this year. As
usual, we will be accompanied by several of
our ladies to show their support, not only
for the Band but also for the Shrine. The
Band is fortunate to have our ladies join us
whenever possible at any of our parades.
they seem to enjoy being part of our interest
in helping the Shrine meet the needs of our
kids. The Band finds the ladies’ support
invaluable.
We have, as a Band, participated in a
couple of the circuses, namely Selkirk and
Winnipeg. In Selkirk, we played once and at
Winnipeg twice, at the morning and afternoon
shows. We would like to have played
more but given our small numbers and the
advanced age of the bandsmen, we really
could not do any more. If we get younger
members to join our unit, no doubt we will
be able to participate more.
It is my unfortunate duty to report that
a family member of one the bandsmen has
passed away recently. The ward of Noble
Drum Band, and he sincerely hoped
there would be a 39th. In addition to the
show on stage, we were given the
opportunity to mingle with the kids.
Talking to them and giving them a pat
on the back gave us a warm feeling and
made us proud to participate in a real
way in what Shriners are doing, not
only in Khartum country but across
Cliff Hardy and his wife
Dianne for 32 years, Cecilia
morning, June 2, 2012.
Cecilia was a special person
and was well known among
the nobles of Khartum as she
attended many Shrine parades
and functions. She was a proud
supporter of the Band along
with Dianne. Cecilia was made
an honorary Band supporter
and presented with a certificate
at our Ladies Evening at
Maxime’s restaurant. Cecilia
was very proud to be recognized
by the Band and was
delighted in receiving the certificate.
The Band will sorely
On June 1, we bid farewell to one of
the most popular members of the Band
— Noble Robert (Bob) Caughlin. Not
surprising was the packed house at the
Windsor Park United Church. After a
long and tough battle with cancer, his
body gave in. Our condolences go to
Mary and the families. Goodby my
friend — until we meet again.

We were given a demonstration of how the “portable
sling” is used. This sling makes it easy to lift the patients from
their wheelchairs or car seats. Another of our donations last
year was a “floating wheelchair.” A young family borrowed
this item and were able to take their family on a beach holiday
for the first time. Illustrious Sir Harry Rosenbaum and
several Divan members attended. Sir Harry congratulated
the Ladies on their efforts on behalf of children. Our other
special guest was Waverly, a patient of the Rehab. Waverly
shyly presented a bouquet to President Darlene as a thank
you from all the patients. Waverly was exited to receive a gift
from President Darlene. The staff served refreshments and
the Ladies received a small token of appreciation.
Our Irish night festival played to a full house. The first
group of entertainers, the Colleen Morrison Trio, rendered
sing-a-long Irish tunes to an enthusiastic audience. Following
a short intermission, two students from the U of M Faculty
of Music took the stage. Singer Sara Clefstad won over
the crowd with her outstanding voice and charming stage
A long standing tradition is the Potentate’s Tea held following
our April meeting. Illustrious Sir Harry made a presentation
about the new Shrine Hospital in Montreal. The
Divan poured tea and coffee without a mishap. The Divan
ladies assisted in seeing a delicious array of fancy sandwiches
and dainties. It was a lovely afternoon.
The Bridge and Card Party Luncheon is a favorite. We
have a faithful following who never miss. They claim our
Fun and fellowship was the theme for our 87th annual
members’ dinner. The Mistress of Ceremonies and convener
of the evening was Bernie Blackman. Rarely does anyone
attain 69 years of membership. Aimee Ibbott has reached that
pinnacle and we were pleased to honor her on this occasion.
We teased Aimee that she is the only one who joined the
Auxiliary at the age of ten. Recipients of the 25-year pin were
Kay Fournier, Jean Macauley, and Jean McIntosh. Fifty-year
certificates will be awarded at a later date to Kay Brooks and
begin our preparations for the Fall Ceremonial, with final
rehearsals at 5:30 P.M. on September 12, 19, and 26. During the
Fall Ceremonial on September 29 at the Victoria Inn, the lessons
learned in the allegory are meant to fill life’s best expectations,
presented by the following ‘noble’ cast assembled by Ceremonial
ime marches on and so does the band. Each and every
spring for the past 28 years, the band’s marching sea-
Tson starts with our trip to Sioux Falls SD. This year, a
combination of St. Patrick’s day falling on Saturday and
record high temperatures brought out huge crowds to the St.
Patrick’s Day parade. In addition to promoting the Shrine to
the many thousands of people who lined the parade route,
we also played our usual round of schools, hospitals, seniors’
homes, and Veterans’ halls to much applause and enthusiasm
including the occasional, and unbelievable yells of Go Jets Go
from the parade route.
We congratulate the new members who joined us for the
first time in Sioux Falls who, along with the Potentate, are
now baptized members of the Sioux Falls, Sisters of St. Patrick
parish of Parade nuns.
In May, we held our second Gathering of the Clans event.
As a band, we spent most of the month preparing for this
event and the band did a great job. The first set provided the
crowd with a selection of bagpipe tunes familiar to most
Please phone our new Secretary Tim Mclsaac at 897-5647.
Now before each day is done, remember to enjoy some
fun!
people. The second set gave us a chance
to perform some more challenging
pieces, well done and greatly appreciated
by the audience. I would say that
this was a successful night.
-3241 We also did our Shrine duty by performing
at circuses in Selkirk and all three performances in
Winnipeg. Of course, our spring wouldn’t be complete without
Relay For Life events in support ” of the Canadian Cancer
Society. This year, we have performed in Winnipeg, Steinbach,
and Lac du Bonnet. Despite torrential rain, we performed
as the opening act of the Teddy Bear’s picnic for the
27th year. Finally, this year we marched in the 100th anniversary
Transcona Hi Neighbor festival parade, played for residents
at Tuxedo Villa, and piped in the graduates at CDI
college.
No one can say we don’t keep up a busy schedule. Looking
ahead to the summer, our big upcoming events are the
Gimli parade and our performance at the Scottish pavilion at
Folklorama. In between, we have a number of local events
that, along with our practices, will keep us busy as usual. As
always, we are looking to increase our numbers so we can
continue to promote the Shrine charities for many years to
come. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the
most active unit in the Shrine, please let us know.

Designating beneficiaries for
your TFSA
So you’ve got a Tax-Free Savings
Account that you’ve grown to $20,000
over the last four years. That’s great.
But what happens to it if something
happens to you?
The rules around TFSAs are quite
generous. Most jurisdictions in Canada
let you designate a successor holder
and/or other beneficiary for your TFSA
outside of your will (as an alternative to
making a designation in your will).
Going outside the will means the funds
won’t go through probate. Probate
takes extra time and fees. You have a
number of options:
1. Designate your spouse or common
law partner as the successor
holder. On your death, they take
over the account with no tax
implications (unless you had
exceeded your contribution limits).
Only your spouse or partner,
as defined by the Income Tax Act,
can be a valid successor holder.
2. Designate other beneficiaries.
Your TFSA will be closed and the
funds distributed to your beneficiaries,
with no tax implications on
your estate if you haven’t exceeded
limits. If your beneficiary has
unused TFSA contribution room
available, they can contribute the
funds to their own TFSA. If you designate
your spouse or partner, they
would have to apply to make an
exempt contribution to their own
TFSA so that it doesn’t count as a
contribution.
3. Do both. If you designate both a
successor holder and a beneficiary(s),
on your death the successor
holder becomes the holder of
your TFSA. If that person has died
before you or is no longer your current
spouse or common law partner,
the TFSA funds are distributed
to the beneficiary, as above.
4. Make no designation for the
TFSA in your contract. The funds
will be distributed according to
the terms of your will.
Any excess contribution at the time
of your death will be subject to a 1% penalty
per month for each month the
excess existed up to the month of death.
Of course, while you are living and
mentally able, you can always change a
designation. Note that under the third
option above, you must redesignate
both your successor holder and your
beneficiary each time you make a
change to either.
-16-
I would be happy to meet with you
to discuss your TFSA beneficiary
options as part of your overall estate
plan. Gifting to Shriners Hospitals for
Children is definitely a worthwhile consideration.
Pembina Valley Shrine Club Fish Fry
he Pembina Valley Shrine Club held their 15th annual
Fish Fry in La Rivière on Sunday, June 3. It was a terrific
Tday and about 613 were served fish, beans, cole slaw,
buns, and ice cream cups. The Pembina Valley Shrine Club
thanks the 40 volunteers, including Shrine members from other
clubs, for their time and hard work.
Noble Elwyn Brown, president of the Pembina Valley Shrine
Club, presented a cheque for $1000 to the Potentate, Illustrious
Sir Harry Rosenbaum. These funds help cover the travel costs to
Shriners Hospital for Children for children accompanied by one
adult from the area. Since 1998, the Pembina Valley Shriners have
raised more than $35,000 with their barbecue.
We are pleased to welcome a new member to the Club,
Noble Rick Kenderdine and his Lady Vivian. We look forward
to your participation in the Club as well as all the
parades with the Brandon Car Patrol.
Three of our nobles were recently honored with life
memberships in the Club. Noble Bruce Kent is a longtime
member who over the years contributed to the well being of
the Club in his unassuming manner in so many ways and
without any fanfare. Noble Keith Lawrence is known for his
dedication and work with the Circus and especially for
working faithfully to ensure the success of program sales
and advertisements which generated great revenues for the
Circus. Noble Don Maloney is a Past President of the Club
and served as Club Secretary for many years. He too was
involved with the Circus, notably working on local and
rural school ticket sales. Congratulations, nobles, we are
pleased that you have been recognized for your contributions
over the years.
I am sorry to report the recent passing of a former member,
Don Gardner. In his time with the Club, he worked diligently
with the Circus committee in various promotions
and with promoting Club activities. We extend our sympathies
to his Lady Judy and family.
Dennis and Alvin Taft were pleased to
have good volunteer support from the
nobles, a number of Masons and
friends of the Shrine. The ladies’ novelty
sales team chaired by Ladies Judy
Kindrat and Lynn Mills report very
good results again with help from all the ladies. A final
report will be presented at the September meeting. Many
thanks to everyone for all your help.
Shelden Eggum
Parents: Clint Eggum and Jeannine Boulet
Shelden Eggum, from Brandon, will be turning 13 in
July and has a congenital deformity of his right foot with the
absence of the lateral aspect (i.e., ten bones and two toes).
Along with his hypoplasia of the right foot, his tibia and fibula
in the right leg are two inches shorter than those in the
fter 18 years of dedicated service
as the Recorder for Khar-
Atum Shriners, Noble Don
Murray, Recorder Emeritus, decided to
retire in order to spend more time with
his good lady Ruth and slow down a little.
Don’s Masonic career began as a
young member of the Demolay. On September
26, 1957, he was initiated into
Norwood Masonic Lodge #119, being
raised to the Sublime degree of a Master
Mason on March 27, 1958.
As a young Mason, Don was seeking
more knowledge in Freemasonry and
began his long association with Scottish
Rite, Valley of Winnipeg, on November 6,
1975. Don served as Most Wise Sovereign
for the Rose Croix Chapter in 1988. The
Valley of Winnipeg awarded Don the Walter
C. McDonald Medal for Meritorious
Service on December 16, 1994. The
Supreme Council of Scottish Rite
awarded Don the 33° on September 13,
1990. Don was then made the Deputy for
Manitoba and the Nunavut Territory
from 1997 to 2006.
Noble Don received his red Fez on
October 26, 1984. He was immediately
snapped up by the Director’s Staff, and
became a tireless worker for the Unit. In
January 1994, Don began serving Khartum
as our Recorder until retirement in
-19-
foot in position and give his leg the lift it needs. The shoes he
wears are also fitted with a special lift.
Shelden was 2½ years old when he was first
approached by Bart Hawkins to become a Shriners patient.
His first visit to the Montreal Shriners was on May 31, 2002,
and he has been given exceptional care by the Shriners ever
since. Their doctors have been keeping a close eye on him
and are now in the process of determining the best time to
operate, likely within the next year. The operation will
involve scratching the growth plate in his “longer” leg in
order to stop it from growing, so that his shorter leg can, in
essence, “catch up.”
We are very grateful for the outstanding care that the
Shriners have provided Shelden and our family. As you can
see, he is a healthy, active young lad with a lot of enthusiasm
for life. He has always remained positive about his situation
and feels very thankful and blessed that he is able to be
involved with sports and other activities just like any other
12-year-old boy.
Thank you, Shriners!!
Recorder Emeritus Donald Murray Retires
November 2011. One of the biggest highlights
in Don’s Shrine career was in 2007
when Illustrious Sir Jack Hooper presented
him with his new Fez and title of
Recorder Emeritus, an honor which Don
proudly wears to this day. As many of
you know, being the Recorder / Secretary
of any organization is an enormous
responsibility which requires a person of
dedication and knowledge regarding the
procedures, rules, and regulations of the
Order. Don has faithfully served eighteen
potentates over the years, making things
run smoothly and efficiently .
Over the years, Don and Ruth have
enjoyed camping with their son and two
daughters, playing golf, fishing, and traveling.
Recently, they sold their house in
Windsor Park and moved into a new condominium
in Transcona. If you have a little
time on your hands, Don and Ruth
would love to have a short visit with their
old friends, or a friendly phone call.
Noble Donald A. Murray, Recorder
Emeritus, on behalf of all the past potentates,
Divan members, and all the Shriners
that you have served over the years, we say
thank you, not only for your hard work
and dedication to Khartum, but for your
friendship as a brother and noble. Take
care and God bless.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, and we’ll see you all at the first
fall meeting in September.
If you are a noble thinking about
joining the Provost Corps, come on out
to one of our meetings. You will be kept
busy and naturally, meet some really
nice nobles to show you the ropes.
Come out to a meeting and learn what
we are about. Our next few meetings
are on August 8, September 12, October 10, and November 14.
All meetings are on a Wednesday and start at 7:00 P.M.
We wish all our shut-ins the best and hope that they all
have speedy recoveries. We extend our condolences to those
who have lost a loved one recently.
start this report off on a sad note —
the visit of the Black Camel to our
Igood friend Jack Codd on April 19
just after the submission of our last
Khronicle report. Jack will be
extremely missed not only by the
Skooters and their ladies but by all of
Khartum and Shrinedom. Jack worked
tirelessly for any and all Shrine functions,
was bigger than life, and always
instilled fun into everything he did. As
Illustrious Sir Harry wrote “When
there was a raffle to run, there he was;
when there was a function to organize,
there he was; and when there was a
master of ceremonies needed, there he
was. This sums up Jack nicely, always
willing to help, no matter how big or
small the task at hand. The turnout by
Shriners and others at Jack’s service
indicated the love and respect everyone
had for Jack. The Skooters nobles
and ladies are sure Jack is in heaven
and is having the angels blow up balloons
for his next party. As Jack would
say”the party must go on.”
On May 6, the Ruff Riders and
Skooters cohosted their annual Donkey
Races at Shrine House. A good
time was enjoyed by all. If you have
never attended, you are missing a
great, fun-filled afternoon with
lots of prizes. A few changes are
planned for next year like not forgetting
coffee and Jack’s cake.
Nobles Joel Segal, Bill Porter,
and Jack Carmichael participated in
the Selkirk Circus. The Skooters also
participated in the Winnipeg Circus
and Jack Carmichael arranged for and
set up the Khartum sales tables with
help from Lady Heather Carmichael,
Noble Les Fawley, and myself. Several
Skooters traveled to Brandon on Friday,
June 8,spent the night (along with
Noble Don’s vintage libations), and
then participated in the Travelers Day
parade on Saturday. They were joined
by their ladies including nonriders
Noble Don and Lady Eleanor Graham
and Lady Shirley Codd. We were all
extremely happy that Lady Shirley was
able to join us for the trip. We were
pleased that our Brandon ”friends”
invited us out and we were treated like
royalty after the parade back at the
Brandon Shrine Centre. Thanks, guys.
After a quick trip back to Winnipeg
on Saturday and some sleep, we were
back at it early on Sunday morning
directing traffic for the Children’s Rehabilitation
Hospital Cruising the Crescent
fundraiser event in which the
Skooters have been involved for many
years. Our duty is to help the Winnipeg
Police Service with traffic control and to
see that all the children and participants
are safe. These kids are absolutely fantastic,
and, despite their issues, bring
smiles of joy to everyone’s faces.
I must mention our participation in
the Transcona Hi Neighbor Festival
parade on Saturday, June 2. This
marked the 100th Anniversary of
Transcona and the parade was the largest
and longest parade route ever.
Khartum had a great turnout and complete
with bands which was great to
see. A parade is not a parade without a
band or two. Transcona folks are
friendly and the Transcona Legion
kindly provided a nice lunch for us
after the parade.
The Skooters are all signed up for
the parades in Selkirk, Altona, Gimli,
and Morden. A large contingent of us
are going to the Midwest in Grand
Forks. With the new limits on things
you can bring back to Canada, you had
better hide the plastic now, guys, or
leave it at home. Sorry, ladies.
“Loonie Tunes” Fun Night
Flag Patrol
By Noble George Einarson
ello, nobles and ladies of Khartum Shriners. I trust
you’re having a wonderful summer and support-
Hing all our events and outings.
To bring you up to date with some of our early activities,
they were record setting events. For example, on Wednesday,
t
May 9, he Fife & Drum Band with five Patrollers marched
and played for the children, adults, and staff at the St. Amant
Centre. More then 180 people enjoyed the presentation and
the visits as Shriners went over to say hello directly to the
kids. This was the 13th consecutive time that the Fife & Drum
Band has attended and then been invited back for the next
year. Following the stirring presentation, the coordinator
invited us for coffee, donuts, and a bowl of soup. Please say a
prayer of “thank you” to all their staff — they do an incredible
job! Also, it was great to have Noble Ted Sherbrook marching
again with his favorite flag.
Another record-breaking event occurred on May 26 at
the Children’s Hospital Teddy Bears Picnic at Assiniboine
Park. The Shrine Patrol and Pipes & Drums attended for the
26th consecutive time. It was a little damp but more than
15,000 people showed up over the
daylong event. Again, congratulations
to all who attended — it makes you
“proud” to be a Shriner in supporting
this terrific event and our community.
On April 10, Noble Dave Parker —
lovingly referred to as our “Senior Statesman,” received his
50-year jewel in Keystone Masonic Lodge from the Grand
Master of Manitoba. Noble Dave also had his father’s 50-year
jewel on hand. Congratulations, Noble Dave, for a wonderful
accomplishment and dedication to our craft.
Our Khronicle has early deadlines, so sometimes we
have to guess and predict the activities of our unit.
We had good turnouts for the circuses in Kenora, Selkirk,
and Winnipeg, plus a mini parade for the Transcona celebrations.
Now I’m guessing that we will have a terrific turnout at
the parades in Lac du Bonnet, Selkirk, Morris, Winnipeg
Beach, Gimli, and Morden. All these towns and communities
appreciate the Shriners participation, and it gives us an
opportunity to “carry the colors” across the province.
August 9 - 11 highlights the Midwest Shrine gathering in
Grand Forks. The Patrol colors will be on hand with help
from the Fife & Drum Band, the Divan, and Provost nobles.
We need their support and are pleased that they are able to
join us on various outings.
Now as we approach autumn — after having a marvelous
summer, the Patrol will be involved in the sales of car raffle
tickets, Christmas cakes, calendars, and Grey Cup tickets.
And, of course, several of our super sales ladies like Sylvia
Hanson, Ivy Payne and Jo Brown will again be helping the
Patrol. Thank you so much!
If someone is feeling under the weather or in the hospital...
a get well card or phone call makes all the difference in
the world. So Nobles and Ladies please take the time to
brighten up some ones day. You'll feel good also!
I must mention the dedication and commitment of our
executive nobles of the Patrol. President Carl, Captain Wilf,
Treasurer Wayne, and Past President and Chief of Staff Bruce
have all worked so hard to keep things going. And let’s not forget
their ladies who support them — taking messages, reminding
the nobles of meetings and outings, and keeping them on
track, and of course giving them the “ok” to have all that fun.
Well that's about it for now. It’s always a pleasure to meet
and greet other nobles and their ladies to share in the camaraderie
and support of our great philanthropy.
Take care and be safe!
If the units/clubs don’t participate,
They will become open game for any unit/club
aggressive. Nobles, we all have to “wake and
and smell the coffee.” Your Membership committee
is not going to preach doom and gloom if
we are not successful at this venture. If we continue
to "sit on our hands," our growth and capabilities
will continue in the direction they have
been going for the last 5 ? 8 years, that being
steadily downwards.
Our numbers have been keeping somewhat
level and Imperial still recognizes us as a
Silver Temple. IIIustrious Sir Harry will be
receiving the official Silver Membership
Award at the forthcoming Imperial Session.
We now have about 956 Khartum nobles registered
with Imperial Headquarters. That number
changes often, but we are having Master
Masons join Khartum. It is not a static or
regressing situation.
For the nobles who have been following
our activities, I ask humbly, “Have you
replaced yourself yet?” If yes, and you know
who you are, I thank you! For those who
haven’t, please take the time to sit and think of
who would be a good Khartum Shriner. You
obviously would know better than anyone
else. After all, you are a Khartum Shriner !
In closing, your Membership Committee is
always open to suggestion, ideas, and
constructive criticism. If you have any of these,
please let me know.
Have a great summer and try to attend as
many of the parades and events in which
Khartum will participate. Strength in numbers,
Drum & Bugle Corps
ur summer has been busy with
scheduled circuses and parades
Oand, of course, plans being made
for the Midwest.
The Drums Corps has been busy
attending several circuses, the first being
Kenora. We had a relaxing and enjoyable
bus trip there, joined by our Illustrious
Potentate, and Flag Honor Guard. After the
first show, a wonderful dinner was hosted
By Noble Jack Goods
by the Lake of the Woods Shrine Club. President
Rick thanked them for the courtesy
before continuing for the second show.
Then it was a quiet trip back home.
The next day was the Selkirk circus, and
it was well attended by all capable nobles.
President Rick thanked all and encouraged
everyone to make sure the Winnipeg circus
was just as well attended. The Drum Corps
had a many members turn out for the two
-31-
shows, afternoon and evening.
The next parade on our
schedule was Lundar, an
important parade. The Drum
Corps has earned a reputation
as a good band, and takes
credit for choosing the
Interlake Queen for the summer
(the units’ vote really doesn’t
count, but the competition
and conversation after makes it
an interesting bus trip home).
The Midwest is settled and
a good-sized group is planning
on going. The hotel is reserved
for twenty double rooms and
reservations are still open.
Those going are looking forward
to a good time, as it is
being hosted by Kem Shriners
in our neighboring city of
Grand Forks.
President Rick is giving
serious attention to Ukrainian
night this fall, with dancers,
music, and good food. It is one
big fun night so be prepared to
attend and bring friends.
Noble Rick hopes to fill the
room — it will be one great
Ukrainian gala night.
Noble Phil Sexton has been
missed all summer due to his
illness. He was unable to
attend many functions. Noble
Phil is a dedicated Shrine
Mason, gives a lot to keep our
other material things that keep
our Winnipeg Shrine fraternity
in operation. Thanks, Noble
Phil — you are a true Shrine philanthropist.
We all wish you a
Although the increase was only by one member, it is still
encouraging that our organization is attracting members.
Several other Canadian temples realized an increase in membership.
Congratulations, ladies!
A letter recently received from the
Director of Nursing and Patient Care
Services advised that the moneys sent
to the Montreal Hospital from the
Piggy program purchased a special lightweight wheelchair,
a shower commode, and various patient gifts. This is the
money raised from all those piggies who just keep on giving.
Even though pennies may not be in circulation in the near
future, nickels, dimes, quarters, and other coins can still fill
those piggies. Another letter received was a thank you for the
generous donation of 12,010 Campbell soup labels and Prego
lids. These items add up to points to purchase equipment
and supplies needed for the classrooms in the various Shrine
hospitals. The children, even in hospital, have classrooms
that keep them up to date in their education. A letter of thank
you was received from the Administrator and the Special
Education Teacher of the Montreal Hospital. They acknowledged
receipt of nine — that is 9 — huge boxes of pre-op dolls,
quilts, clothing, and stuffed animals. Each child enjoys
choosing his or her favorite quilt that our ladies create with
so much “Nile Love.” The pre-op dolls are also a favorite of
the children as the hospital educators use the dolls in preparation
for each child’s upcoming surgery. Each child is happy
to be able to keep their special pre-op doll. The Sphinx Temple
ladies have been busy and they are happy to know all that
they do, while having fun, is appreciated and enjoyed by the
patients of the hospitals. This past year, 601 items were
donated with a total value of $7,928.00.
This year, Sphinx Temple’s donations from April 1, 2011,
to March 31, 2012, totaled $14,744.59. This is only a small part
of the total donations made by the eleven Daughters of the
Nile temples for this year. The Canadian Trust Spreadsheet
showing all donations for April 1, 2011, to March 31, 2012, to
the various programs from all Canadian temples totaled an
impressive $521,083.56. That is a fantastic amount and ladies,
you should all be proud. Quite a feat and one to be able to
hopefully repeat.
Supreme Queen Suzie Schumacher will be making her
official visit to Sphinx Temple in August. A ceremony of Initiation
will be held on Sunday, August 26, at the Masonic
Memorial Centre.
A Piggy Picnic will once again be held at the Shrine Centre,
on Sunday, September 16, where we acknowledge all the
ladies who have contributed to the Piggy Program and celebrate
all the donations the Piggies make in order that we can
fulfill the wish list of the Montreal Hospital.
Sphinx Temple sadly mourns the loss of two of our members,
Princesses Lorna Moffat and Mavis Burr. To those who
are in sorrow or distress, our thoughts and prayers are with
you.
Sphinx Temple, along with the other concordant bodies
of the Masonic family, will be attending the various parades
throughout the summer. We wish everyone a happy and
healthy summer.

Perfect Pitch: Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada
Patient who was Born Deaf Chosen as Ambassador for our
22-Hospital System for his Singing Talent
Jeremy Gabriel from Quebec City (Quebec) (l.) and Hunter Woodhall (r.) from Syracuse (Utah) have been selected as Shriners
Hospitals for Children’s patient ambassadors for 2012?2013. The announcement was made on July 4, 2012, after the premiere of their video:
“Two Worlds Apart—One Place of Hope” during the Imperial Session of Shriners International (National Convention) in Charlotte (North
Carolina). Jeremy took the stage in front of over 10,000 Shriners from throughout the world to perform a song and share his story.
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care
at the health care system’s 22 facilities annually. Throughout the year, the Ambassadors will share their stories to inspire others and raise
awareness for the hospital system.
The Artist:
He has sung for both Celine Dion and the Pope; he has recorded two albums and co-authored a book. He was born deaf.
Jeremy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City (Quebec) was born prematurely with severe facial malformations and other complications
requiring intensive care. Jeremy was finally diagnosed at 6 months with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. In addition to
head, skull and facial deformities, children with this condition generally have absent or malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss.
Jeremy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada at the age of 5 for treatment. There, the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D.,
a plastic and craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) implant which would allow him to hear.
Thanks to a special program funded by Daughters of the Nile Canada (international charitable organization of women related to Shriners),
Jeremy received his implant in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery, Jeremy was fascinated with sound, and discovered he could sing. In
fact, he has perfect pitch. Jeremy is scheduled for additional facial reconstructive surgery later this year.
“Without the life-changing BAHA implants thanks to the Daughters of the Nile, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and Dr. Lessard, I
would have never been able to hear, let alone sing ”expressed Jeremy. “ Now that I have been chosen as patient ambassador for the entire
hospital system, I will be able to share my story and instill hope in families living through difficult situations. It is truly an honor to be named
ambassador and speak on behalf of the hospital system throughout Canada, the United States, and Mexico” he added.
Jeremy now attends a high school specializing in performing arts, where he is an excellent student. He is preparing for a career in the
music business.
