Welcome
We welcome you to the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Diseases of Zoo and Wild Animals
2012 in Bussolengo/Verona, Italy. By being part of this unique international annual gathering,
you are contributing to advancing key research on diseases of free-ranging and zoo
animals.
Parco Natura Viva, which jointly organises this conference, is located on gentle hills covered
in oak woods near the Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. It hosts a great diversity of animals
and comprises three different parts – the Fauna Park, the Safari Park and the Extinction
Park. Whereas the Fauna Park can be explored by foot, the Safari Park can be visited by
car and is specifically dedicated to African mammals and birds. In the Extinction Park you
have the chance to see statues of extinct animals and to learn about their time on Earth.
As a member of the UIZA (Italian Union of Zoos and Aquaria), the EAZA (European Association
of Zoo and Aquaria) and the WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquaria), the Parco
Natura Viva is involved in various national and international projects whose aim is the
breeding and preservation of endangered animals. It also promotes initiatives to reintroduce
endangered species into the wild, supports educational projects and in situ conservation
programmes, and financially supports organisations which safeguard the survival of
specific species (e.g. the Parrots Trust and the <strong>International</strong> Snow Leopard Trust).
As the Parco Natura Viva is ideally located between the Lake Garda in the west and Verona
in the southeast, you will also have the chance to visit the city of Verona, which is not only
famous for its opera festivals and as setting for Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet but
also for its urban structure and architecture for which it has been awarded world heritage
status by UNESCO.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME - GENERAL INFORMATION
Oral presentations. All oral presentations will take place at the conference centre of the
Parc Hotel in Castelnuovo/Peschiera del Garda. There will be four plenary talks, one at the
beginning of each morning session and one at the beginning of the Thursday afternoon
session. The last plenary talk will be held on the Saturday morning session. Contributed
talks will be held in ten sessions. All contributed talks consist of a twelve-minute presentation
followed by three-minute discussion. Chairpersons will keep a strict schedule.
PowerPoint presentations require a USB-stick or CD-ROM containing all necessary files. For
technical reasons, individual laptops will only be hooked up to the beamer in exceptions.
Posters are displayed in the main conference building and can be viewed at all times.
Posters are arranged alphabetically. Contributors of posters are requested to present their
posters in person during the poster sessions (Thursday and Friday afternoon during the
coffee break). Poster mounting starts on Wednesday, 16 th May, at 15:00. Posters should be
on site until Saturday, 19 th May, at 13:00.
Workshops 1 - 5 are scheduled for Wednesday 16 th May (for times and durations please see
below) and all of them will take place at the Parco Natura Viva. We will have a registration
desk at the main entrance of the Parco Natura Viva. The Parco Natura Viva staff will be
there to welcome you from 07:30 until 10:00. You will receive a conference bag with an
identity workshop badge, a notebook and a Parco Natura Viva map.

There will be volunteers to help and guide the groups.
You may have lunch at the Parco Natura Viva’s SIMBA Self Service Restaurant, open 12:00 -
15:00. The price is about 10.00/15.00 €; there are vegetarian options available. Please take
your identity badge with you and you will get 50 % discount. In the Park there are also other
bars where you can have a sandwich or a fruit salad.
Parco Natura Viva is located out of town so the nearest place you can reach takes about 30
minutes walking and there you can have a pizza at “Casolare”; prices from 15.00 € to whatever
you want to spend.
Roundtable discussions (parallel sessions) are scheduled for Friday 18 th May (17:00 - 18:00)
at the conference centre of the Parc Hotel.

Student Award. Students should indicate at the registration office that they are eligible for
the Student Award.
Rudolf Ippen Young Scientist Award (RISA), EAZWV/IZW. The “Rudolf Ippen Young
Scientist Award” was awarded for the first time in Madrid in 2010, in memory of the
internationally acclaimed scientist Prof Dr Rudolf Ippen, who passed away in March 2009.
The award will go to a young scientist whose research demonstrates challenging and innovative
ideas and/or offers useful practical or theoretical knowledge to the work of a broad
spectrum of zoo and wildlife veterinarians, biologists or other wildlife scientists.
Application for 2013. Please send your CV, list of publications (at least one as first author),
and a pdf copy of one or two of your most significant publications to:
2013@zoovet-conference.org.
Student presentation and poster awards. A jury will grant three awards to the presenting
authors of the best student presentations and three awards to the presenting authors of
the best posters during the closing session scheduled between 12:15 – 12:45 on Saturday,
19 th May. Students and poster authors: please be at the closing session!
Abstracts of all scientific contributions to the conference are published in the “Proceedings
of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Diseases of Zoo and Wild Animals 2012”. In this
“<strong>Conference</strong> Programme” booklet, the page number at the end of the title of each contribution
indicates the page number of the corresponding contribution in the published
proceedings.

SOCIAL EVENTS
Welcome evening (ice breaker). Wednesday, 16 th May, 19:30 - 21:30. We will meet at the
terrace of the Parc Hotel and greet colleagues over a variety of drinks, cold soups, salads,
cold and hot canapés and desserts. The theme of the evening will be “Get together and be
cool”.
Festive evening: One night at Lake Garda. Thursday, 17 th May, 20:30 - 24:00. Enjoy a dinner
at “La Loggia Rambaldi”, a restaurant located in a 16th-century building overlooking the
harbour of Bardolino. A shuttle bus will leave from Parc Hotel at 20:00 and will return to the
Hotel at 24:00.
Students’ night out. Friday, 18 th May, starting at 20:00. The students will meet for a delicious
and chummy BBQ. Exact time and place will be announced at the Student’s General

followed by a wonderful buffet dinner. There will be return transfers from Parco Natura
Viva to the hotel, from 23:30 to 01:00.

Excursion to Heller Garden and Sirmione. Sunday, 20 th May, 08:45 - 19:30. We will meet at
08:45 at the Parc Hotel and head to Sirmione, a gorgeous village on the tip of the Benaco
peninsula, at the southernmost end of Lake Garda. The historic centre is delightful with
narrow streets, aristocratic houses and small piazzas. By boat you will get to Gardone
Riviera where you will explore the nearby Heller Botanic Garden – faboulous gardens which
take advantage of Lake Garda’s climate and feature a mix of plants from all over the world.
Lunch will take place at 13:00 in a restaurant in Gardone Riviera. After lunch, we will visit
Heller Garden.
After the excursion the bus will take us back to the Parc Hotel, where it will arrive approximately
at 19:30.
Accompanying persons are very welcome to participate in all social activities and evening
programmes provided that a place is booked for them by a conference participant. Please
inquire at the conference office for details.
