Romanian Companies Dominate Telecoms<br />
Industry Ranking<br />
Romania’s telecommunications market,<br />
which is the largest in the region of<br />
Southeastern Europe, dominated the ranking<br />
in the sector this year as expected.<br />
Romania, a country of 21.5 million, has six<br />
wireless operators, all of which entered the<br />
2009 ranking.<br />
The largest of them, Orange Romania,<br />
topped the ranking in the sector with a<br />
total revenue exceeding 1.0 billion euro.<br />
The company had 10.471 million clients<br />
as of end-June.<br />
The second and the third-ranked companies,<br />
Nokia Romania, a unit of Finnish supplier<br />
of telecommunications equipment Nokia,<br />
and former monopoly Telekom Srbija, also<br />
posted a total revenue in excess of one billion<br />
euro each.<br />

Besides Orange, the other five Romanian<br />
telcos that entered the 2009 ranking were<br />
the local units of global telecoms giant<br />
Vodafone and Greece’s Cosmote, Romanian<br />
telecommunications group RCS&RDS, and<br />
Romtelecom, majority-owned by Greece’<br />
OTE.<br />
Romania’s mobile phone penetration rate<br />
rose to 118.2% at the end of 2009 from<br />
113.8% a year earlier, data of the country’s<br />
telecommunications regulator ANCOM<br />
showed.<br />
The number of mobile telephony subscribers<br />
in Romania rose by 3.7% last year to 25.4<br />
million, while the number of fixed-line<br />
subscribers fell by 0.7% to 4.09 million.<br />
The top three Bulgarian telecoms also entered<br />
the 2009 industry ranking. The country’s<br />

Herzegovina<br />
biggest wireless operator, Mobiltel, part<br />
of Telekom Austria, led the ranking of the<br />
Bulgarian telecoms. It was followed by<br />
Cosmo Bulgaria Mobile, part of the largest<br />
Greek telecoms group OTE that operates<br />
in Bulgaria under the Globul brand. Third<br />
among the Bulgarian representatives was the<br />
Bulgarian Telecommunications Company<br />
(BTC), operating under the Vivacom brand.<br />
Besides telecoms operators, the only other<br />
companies that entered the 2009 ranking<br />
were Nokia Romania and the Croatian<br />
manufacturer of telecommunications<br />
equipment Ericsson Nikola Tesla, of which<br />
Swedish telecoms equipment giant Ericsson<br />
owns 49.07%.<br />
