The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation<br />

– <strong>SA</strong> Branch Inc- (<strong>ACHPER</strong> <strong>SA</strong>) are pleased to release <strong>the</strong> program<br />

for <strong>the</strong> popular annual Secondary Conference for educators within<br />

<strong>the</strong> fi elds of Health & Physical Education in <strong>the</strong> Middle and Senior<br />

Years. This popular conference will be held on Monday 6th and<br />

Tuesday 7th December, <strong>2010</strong> at Flinders University, Sturt Gym,<br />

Bedford Park.<br />

This 2 day conference will provide high quality professional learning<br />

in preparation for 2011. We encourage delegates to participate in a<br />

variety of workshops and take advantage of this valuable networking<br />

opportunity with teachers and specialist presenters. Ideas of best<br />

practice will be explored within <strong>the</strong> fi elds of Health & Physical<br />

Education.<br />

We are delighted to have Jane Woodlands-Thomspon present a<br />

keynote session to open <strong>the</strong> conference for <strong>2010</strong>. We encourage<br />

you to join over 100 educators who enjoy <strong>the</strong> Conference offerings<br />

annually and promote activities to your colleagues.<br />

Keynote Speaker -<br />

Jane Woodlands - Thompson<br />

Jane Woodlands - Thompson has been<br />

<strong>the</strong> Adelaide Thunderbirds Netball Side<br />

Head coach since 2008. She has <strong>the</strong> best<br />

win:loss record in <strong>the</strong> ANZ championships<br />

fi rst 3 years. In her three years as coach,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Thunderbirds have improved each<br />

year from 3rd place in 2008, 2nd place in<br />

2009 and in <strong>2010</strong> 1st place, winning <strong>the</strong><br />

Championship 52 goals to 42 defeating <strong>the</strong><br />

highly regarded New Zealand Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic.<br />

Jane has an extensive career as a netball coach, in addition<br />

to a successful playing career. In her time as Thunderbirds<br />

coach, Jane has transitioned <strong>the</strong> highest number of athletes<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Australian Diamonds squad from <strong>the</strong> ANZ program.<br />

Jane has also been part of <strong>the</strong> National High Performance<br />

Coaches program in <strong>2010</strong>, as well as being a Diamonds<br />

Assistant Coach.<br />

Jane will share some of <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong> Thunderbirds past<br />

season, and outline <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>the</strong> head coach and coaching<br />

team, and importance of planning, goal setting and teamwork<br />

in achieving success. An educator herself and a strong<br />

advocate and supporter of <strong>ACHPER</strong> – we are delighted to<br />

have Jane attend our Conference and offer a talk that will<br />

inspire and challenge all present.<br />

1.1 Korfball, Sport in <strong>the</strong> Mixed Zone<br />

Not only is korfball <strong>the</strong> world’s only truly designed international mixed team<br />

sport, encompassing equality and cooperation; it is also a sport that will take<br />

your class seconds to pick up yet years to master. This course will give you<br />

a practical introduction to <strong>the</strong> game, and provide you with enough material<br />

to establish your own 5 week lesson plan. Practical. Presenter: Adrian<br />

Terrace, North Adelaide Korfball<br />

1.2 Sport skill acquisition – moving beyond <strong>the</strong> information<br />

processing model<br />

Developments in sport skill learning <strong>the</strong>ory have moved <strong>the</strong>oretical understanding<br />

of sport skill acquisition away from linear information processing towards nonlinear<br />

and constructivist ‘constraints’ based skill learning <strong>the</strong>ory (CBSLT). This<br />

session will overview CBSLT. Implications for sport teaching approaches will<br />

be discussed. In particular, how CBSLT has been identifi ed with a TGfU/Game<br />

Sense approach. This workshop will involve participants developing or modifying<br />

a sport unit of work to be consistent CBSLT. Please bring along an existing sport<br />

unit plan if you can. Presenter: Shane Pill, Flinders University<br />

1.3 Gaelic Football<br />

Gaelic Football is a fun, fast, skill full game with less stoppages and contact<br />

than traditional AFL. It is played by both genders and is suitable for all<br />

<strong>secondary</strong> students. Practical. Presenter: Tom Javor, Gaelic Football <strong>SA</strong><br />

1.4 Secondary School Volleyball<br />

Everything you need to know about teaching Secondary School aged volleyball<br />

successfully. Includes drills, skill models and handouts on everything covered<br />

in <strong>the</strong> session. Practical. Presenter: Simon Phillips, Volleyball <strong>SA</strong><br />

2.1 Games Sense Approach to Teaching<br />

This is a practical session that uses <strong>the</strong> Game Sense philosophy to introduce<br />

students to Rugby League and <strong>the</strong>n to develop skills and game strategies.<br />

This model has been very successful in high schools and is recommended<br />

for <strong>secondary</strong> teachers. Practical. Presenter: David Cohen, Rugby <strong>SA</strong><br />

2.2 Lawn Bowls...not just for old people!<br />

This session is relevant to teachers of <strong>secondary</strong> students. Mini-games,<br />

skills drills and technique demonstrations will be provided. Please wear fl atsoled<br />

2.3 Hockey for Students<br />

Hockey is a fast and exciting sport. This session will offer practical ideas<br />

for teaching hockey. “Lets Hockey” is a program that teachers students <strong>the</strong><br />

basics of hockey in a fun and <strong>sa</strong>fe environment with a focus on participation<br />

for all. Practical. Presenter: Dale Stephen, Hockey <strong>SA</strong><br />

2.4 Basketball for Secondary Students<br />

Basketball <strong>SA</strong> presents an interactive session on practical teaching skills for<br />

basketball. The session includes fun games to play. Also outlined will be all that<br />

Basketball <strong>SA</strong> has to offer you, your students, <strong>the</strong>ir parents, and your school<br />

(ranging from coaching courses to school clinics, holiday programs, links with<br />

<strong>the</strong> 36ers and lightning, etc). Practical. Presenter: Tracy York, Baskeball <strong>SA</strong><br />

3.1 Stage 2 PE in 2011 – Planning for <strong>the</strong> changes to <strong>the</strong><br />

course and its assessment<br />

An opportunity to explore what <strong>the</strong> changes to <strong>the</strong> course are, how moderation<br />

requirements will be met and to interact with o<strong>the</strong>rs who are mapping <strong>the</strong>ir course for<br />

2011. The hope is we will all walk away from this session, better prepared for <strong>the</strong> fi rst<br />

year of <strong>the</strong> “New <strong>SA</strong>CE” at Stage 2. Presenter: David Serotzki, Concordia College

3.2 Floor Hockey<br />

Floor hockey is a high energy game and can be played in a fun and <strong>sa</strong>fe<br />

manner, indoor or out. This is a fast and exciting way to motivate students in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir PE classes. Practical. Presenter: Bill Benedictson, St Michael’s College<br />

3.3 Play with Purpose to Teach Touch Football<br />

This workshop will show you how to use game-centred instructional<br />

strategies for sport teaching explained in PWP to teach Touch. PWP<br />

encourages <strong>the</strong> use of a spectrum of instructional strategies in a gamecentred<br />

environment. This is a practical workshop, so dress to be active.<br />

3.4 Refresh, Revive - Utilize<br />

Engaging Students in Health Lessons – easier <strong>sa</strong>id than done? Explore lesson<br />

ideas and cross curriculum opportunities for engaging learning experiences.<br />

4.1 Cricket Made Exciting!<br />

A game that is often seen as diffi cult to coach and manage with many<br />

complex skills as well as <strong>the</strong> perception of being ‘boring’! This session<br />

will look at <strong>the</strong> philosophy of Game Sense for learning within <strong>the</strong> cricket<br />

context using activities for small groups to a full on game and how it can<br />

be manipulated to achieve effective skill outcomes. Practical.<br />

4.2 Keeping Kids Active - Commercial<br />

Discover how <strong>the</strong> Polar Kids R Active program utilises learning models, lesson<br />

plans and heart rate monitors to increase <strong>the</strong> physical activity of your students. This<br />

interactive session inlcudes an introduction to <strong>the</strong> online models and a practical<br />

lesson plan. Practical. Presenter: Leon Burckhardt, Polar Kids R Active<br />

4.3 Badminton Techniques<br />

Practical session focusing on badminton techniques for high school players.<br />

The session will cover all shots used in badminton combined with some fun<br />

4.4 Teaching Grassroots Football<br />

This session aims to help grassroots coaches and teachers perform<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir role more effectively, by giving clear guidance on <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

role and <strong>the</strong> kinds of activities <strong>the</strong>y should include in <strong>the</strong>ir sessions with<br />

students. This is an excellent way for teachers to learn <strong>the</strong> basic “tools<br />

of <strong>the</strong> trade” so that <strong>the</strong>y feel more comfortable about teaching football.<br />

5.1 Introduction to School Squash<br />

The Squash session will offer teachers <strong>the</strong> skills to run a “fun” squash<br />

session. It will incorporate match play and basic target drills with <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

modifi ed equipment to make <strong>the</strong> game easy for beginners to enjoy. Teachers<br />

will be given <strong>the</strong> basic instruction for all levels and will be playing games in<br />

under ten minutes! You learn best by doing! Practical. Presenter: John<br />

5.2 Play Practice and <strong>the</strong> model of skilful play - Theory<br />

Have you heard about Play Practice but aren’t entirely sure what it is or<br />

perhaps how to truly implement it? This session will introduce you to <strong>the</strong><br />

3 keys of Play Practice and highlight its underpinning model of skilful play,<br />

assisting you to accurately analyse, compare and appraise <strong>the</strong> teaching of<br />

games. Presenter: Scott Adams, University of South Australia<br />

5.3 AFL Recreational Football and SEPEP<br />

Learn <strong>the</strong> ins and outs of <strong>the</strong> newest version of Australian Rules – AFL<br />

Rec Footy. Experience <strong>the</strong> Sport Education in Physical Education program<br />

and see how AFL Rec Footy can be used to deliver fun and enjoyment,<br />

in a <strong>sa</strong>fe and educational environment. Practical. Presenter: <strong>SA</strong>NFL<br />

5.4 Lacrosse<br />

An introduction to <strong>the</strong> fun fi lled game of lacrosse for your school sporting<br />

curriculum. Lacrosse is a great game and is one of <strong>the</strong> fastest games on two<br />

feet! It’s a great sport for children to develop agility and good hand/eye coordination<br />

as well as an opportunity to make new friends and be a part of a<br />

Session Six 1.00pm - 2.15pm<br />

6.1 “Teaching Students to be Food Detectives” AND “Are<br />

your students Smarter than Smoking?”<br />

This session will give you practical ideas to empower and engage your<br />

children in learning about Healthy Eating. Help your students take<br />

ownership of <strong>the</strong>ir own health and guide <strong>the</strong>ir nutritional choices with<br />

examples of food labeling and “portion distortion”. Presenter: Kirsty<br />

Crouch, <strong>ACHPER</strong> (<strong>SA</strong>)<br />

AND <strong>the</strong> second part to this session will outline <strong>the</strong> latest information<br />

around young people and smoking as well as showcase <strong>the</strong> resources<br />

6.2 The Play Practice approach to teaching and learning<br />

Flag Football<br />

Flag is a highly suitable game for Upper Primary through to Senior<br />

Secondary students but it is rarely taught. This practical session will take<br />

participants through <strong>the</strong> model for teaching and learning Flag Football with<br />

novice participants, highlighting <strong>the</strong> Play Practice methods being used,<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> relevant elements of skilful play and au<strong>the</strong>ntic assessment<br />

6.3 Baseball for Secondary Students<br />

Baseball like all o<strong>the</strong>r sports involves <strong>the</strong> teaching of basic skills. The<br />

mastering of <strong>the</strong>se skills is essential in all sports. This session will offer a<br />

range of practical strategies for your classes. Practical. Presenter: Ron<br />

6.4 ‘Learning with mobile technology’ - Commercial<br />

With <strong>the</strong> trend towards personal, mobile, 24x7 connected devices, free<br />

software applications, and rich media <strong>the</strong>re is so much that can be<br />

done to engage students in learning. Bring your own notebook, laptop,<br />

netbook, smartphone, or iPad if you’re lucky and we’ll explore a number<br />

of technologies that can be used in and out of <strong>the</strong> classroom. Wireless<br />

will be available for this session. Hopefully, you will be able to explore<br />

some of <strong>the</strong>se yourselves. If you don’t have one of <strong>the</strong> above, <strong>the</strong>n we’ll<br />

6.5 Golf for Secondary Students<br />

This session will be practical and aimed at <strong>the</strong> Teacher who wishes to<br />

introduce Golf at School. The presenter will introduce you to golf and where<br />

7.1 A Model Class Structure to Get Students Creating &<br />

Choreographing Dance<br />

Participants will be guided through a warm up and dance class organi<strong>sa</strong>tion<br />

<strong>the</strong>n taught a simple movement phrase. Small groups will be given different<br />

tasks to manipulate <strong>the</strong> phrase resulting in ideas for teachers to facilitate <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

student’s creative and choreographic skills. Practical. Presenter: Cherie<br />

7.2 Netball for Secondary Schools<br />

This session will outline intermediate skills that will provide you with <strong>the</strong><br />

essential knowledge for running netball programs in <strong>secondary</strong> school. The<br />

skills session will demonstrate warm ups, drills, passing, modifi ed games and<br />

specialist positional techniques neces<strong>sa</strong>ry in <strong>the</strong> game of netball. Practical.<br />

7.3 Leadership in Secondary Schools<br />

This session will walk you through a very simple way you can conduct an<br />

audit of your PE program, giving each participant <strong>the</strong> opportunity to identify<br />

<strong>the</strong> ‘good’ and <strong>the</strong> ‘things we can do better’ in your current programs. Please<br />

bring a copy of your <strong>2010</strong> PE program, as a working document for this session<br />

as we will make a start on <strong>the</strong> auditing process during <strong>the</strong> session. Presenter:<br />

7.4 Touch Football - anyone, anywhere, anytime<br />

Touch Football is a great minimal contact game to play with girls and boys of<br />

all ages. You will learn some new skills & drills, obtain teaching resources and<br />
