Meeting demand for
versatile chemical MA
Sasol-Huntsman is one of Europe’s leading providers of maleic
anhydride (MA), the most important ingredient for unsaturated
polyester resins. Tebodin recently completed a second MA production
line at the Sasol-Huntsman facilities in Moers, Germany.
Sasol-Huntsman, a joint venture
between Sasol Chemical Holdings and
Huntsman Corporation, decided on
an expansion of its MA plant to meet
the expected significant increase in
demand for this important chemical.
The production capacity in Moers
was raised from an annual 60,000 to
105,000 tons with the construction of a
second reactor and purification section.
The new line operates independently to
ensure uninterrupted production, even
during maintenance work of catalyst
replacements.
Tebodin Indonesia is quite a new office.
Yet we have three sizable projects in
Indonesia in progress. We utilize our
specialists from other Tebodin offices
- mainly Tebodin China and Tebodin
new Indonesian employees. This way
we secure that both Tebodin business
principles and local knowledge are
applied. This way our new, yet very
experienced, Indonesian employees
quickly absorb the Tebodin standards
and culture.
says Guido Halbach at the Gelsenkirchen
office. ‘The engineering and construction
works in this large EPCM project were
organized in close collaboration with
Sasol-Huntsman. The engineering
stage involved 108,000 manhours.
Construction time between January 2009
and February 2010 came to more than
350,000 hours. The installation of the
largest package unit, the absorber, was
shown on German television.’
Challenges
Tebodin Germany used the engineering
tool Comos PT in the disciplines process,
piping, electrical and instrumentation
for the first time. This posed some
considerable challenges but, even if the
project was not without its technical
difficulties, by the end of February
all components were commissioned
properly and the first product was
manufactured. ‘The project was finished
in time, on budget and to the full
satisfaction of Sasol-Huntsman.’
Safety awareness
Tebodin also achieved the goal of zero
lost-time incidents and was invited to
provide safety awareness training during
the project, on-site and in one of the
client’s conference facilities. ‘The project
findings and the small gaps between
theory and practice were very fruitful
in terms of discussions between the
participants. This has helped to deepen
safety awareness for everyone involved’,
Mr. Halbach concludes.
Strategic water storage
and recovery in Abu Dhabi
Tebodin Middle East is taking on the detailed engineering of the
pipeline system for a strategic water storage and recovery project
in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The almost complete dependence on seawater desalination makes the Gulf
countries vulnerable to any emergency that disrupts production. The current
water tank system in Abu Dhabi would last for just two to five days.
After studying different options for the creation of a strategic water reserve,
Abu Dhabi decided to implement Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) by using
the overcapacity of the desalination plants.
EPC contractor ACC-POSCO assigned Tebodin to the detailed engineering for
the pipelines, piping, mechanical, civil, electrical, instrumentation, control and
SCADA system. The total length of the pipeline system is around 135 kilometers.
Tebodin will dedicate an estimated 42,000 man-hours to the project.
The ASR technique tops up existing ground water layers with desalinated
seawater. This enables long-term quality storage, while a large-scale surface tank
system would need the water to be frequently recycled and refreshed. The main
advantage, compared to conventional storage, is a drastic cost reduction.
‘How do we provide equal quality all over
the world?’
How does a globally active company maintain unity in its culture and service level? Highly skilled and
committed employees who have the drive for exceeding clients’ expectations and impressing them
with their solutions and performance is key to answering that question, says Tebodin’s Director Human
Resources, Ms. Niriti Mehta.
Ms. Niriti Mehta (right) with
HR colleague Ms. Nienke Tigchelaar
‘We want clients to feel secure that we
are ready to meet all challenges and
bring best solutions to them,’ says
Ms. Mehta, ‘and that they can do so
in all sectors and in all parts of the
world. Many of Tebodin’s clients are
global companies, who need to count-on
similar service levels on all their projects.
Similarly, each client in a particular
sector must be equally satisfied as any
other client in that same sector, no
matter where they are geographically.’
Design of electrical substation
Reliable engineering
partner for ABB Mr.
ABB Switzerland has counted
on Tebodin Hungary for the past
15 years. The latest challenge
is to make steel structures rigid
enough to prevent any damage
to innovative high-voltage
switchgear.
ABB is a global leader in power and
automation technologies. The ABB
Group operates in over 100 countries
and employs about 117,000 people.
The company produces components and
systems for power plants, transmission
and distribution grids. ABB Switzerland
specializes in high-voltage equipment.
‘We help our customers to use electrical
power effectively’, says ABB engineer
Mr. Mario Janjic, who is responsible for
the steel construction of substations.
Framework for continuity
Ms. Mehta has a broad view of what
goes in the company’s many local offices.
‘Our job at corporate HR is to provide
frameworks and best practices for the
development of our employees.
Within that framework, we ensure
that new joinees are involved in the
Tebodin style in a strong and powerful
onboarding process. This is the beginning
of their journey within Tebodin and we
want them to be well equipped
to perform to their best.’
‘We put great efforts to enable our
people to develop their talents to
their full potential and expose them to
technical and managerial development
paths which would lead to career paths
that match their skills and ambitions.
In addition to offering people a career
and switching, protection and control
equipment. Using its own SF6 GIS (Gas
Insulated Switchgear) system, ABB can
make substations ten times smaller,
according to Tebodin project manager
Mr. Zoltán Horváth. ‘This innovative
technology carries 220 kV to 1100 kV
and is much more secure in operation
than conventional substations. However,
it also requires more precision in other
components, such as high accuracy and
safety in the supporting steel structure.’
The ABB team at Tebodin designs steel
structures for various parts of the world.
Mr. Horváth: ‘Every site presents special
conditions and design criteria. Structures
in Siberia have other specifications than
those for deserts or areas with a high
risk of earthquakes or hurricanes.
We We have been working for ABB for over
15 years now, with one one project following
the other. We designed more than
that suits their ambitions, we keep a
close watch on the succession pipeline
for management positions. All of this
to ensure continuity and a high level of
service throughout our organization.’
All of this is supported by various
interventions, tools, training programs
and expertise; all designed to bring the
best value to our employees and through
them, to our customers.
Integral part of the team
‘While clients will often deal with their
local Tebodin office,’ says Ms. Mehta,
‘they can rest assured that those offices
have the full backup from the entire
Tebodin network. “Helping each other”
is at the crux of the culture of Tebodin.
‘Always close’ is what we live by when it
comes to working across borders.’
Mr. Janjic says ABB is more than satisfied
with the speed and accuracy of the
design team at the Tebodin Budapest
office. ‘We know we can rely on Tebodin
for steel supporting structures and
Making the most of small gas fields
Canadian oil & gas company
Vermilion relies on Tebodin to
maximize natural gas production
from its Slootdorp location in
the Netherlands.
Vermilion develops and optimizes
mature production locations in Western
Canada, Western Europe and Australia.
The company has been producing natural
gas from small fields in the northern
Netherlands since 2004. The Dutch
government stimulates the development
of small fields in order to preserve the
larger reserves in the Slochteren field.
Kingspan Hall of the Year
In the Hungarian city of Szeged, the tramway system has recently
been redeveloped. With its design for the maintenance depot,
Tebodin Hungary has won the Kingspan Hall of the Year award.
The original depot hall in Pulz Street had to be renewed and extended with a new
service hall for maintenance work. Tebodin prepared the permit and the as-built
design documentation in 2007 and 2008. Special attention was paid to preserving
the style of the old service hall in the new building parts.
The project scope included the arrangement of the grounds surrounding the
building, a new service hall and workshop, the extension and rebuilding of the
existing hall, and the demolition of unnecessary building parts.
Tebodin Hungary, in cooperation with the construction company, made an
impressive presentation of the results in a well-known architecture magazine.
Contenders for the award were public buildings completed in 2010, in which
Kingspan sandwich panels were applied.
‘Our company modifies wells and surface
facilities to improve the gas flow and
processing efficiency’, says Vermilion
project manager Mr. Marten Bolt.
‘We are drilling new wells and planning
to increase production levels this year.
Currently we produce gas from six fields
including the Slootdorp field. This is
a tail-end production location and
we need a compressor to
make the
most of it. Tebodin is well known for it
expertise in compression technology.’
Project manager Henk Zilverberg at the
Tebodin office in Groningen headed
the team that started work on the
basic engineering in June 2009. ‘The
compressor will raise the pressure to the
desired level and send it on to the gas
A new biopharmaceutical laboratory in one year
For pharmaceutical company
Synthon time is money. BAM,
Tebodin and architect Broekbakema
were able to guarantee the fast
track realization of Synthon’s new
biopharmaceutical laboratory
and office building. Starting with
architectural sketches in March 2010,
fully furnished biopharmaceutical
labs and offices were delivered to
Synthon March 31 st 2011.
Mr. Joost van Raaij (left) and Mr. Koen Kodde
In the early 1990’s Synthon was
founded to develop and produce generic
medicines, which are equivalents of
original pharmaceutical products.
These high-quality affordable alternatives
allow people everywhere to have access
to better healthcare. Now Synthon is
building on the success of its small
molecule generics business by taking
a leading role in the development of
biopharmaceuticals.
Speed and transparency
To facilitate a rapid expansion of their
biopharmaceutical activities, Synthon
needed to speed up the design and
construction process for its new
pharmaceutical laboratory and office
building in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Mr. Koen Kodde, head of engineering
Biopharmaceuticals at Synthon, is very
of long-lead items in the compressor
package. The detail engineering stage
involves installing the compressor at the
Slootdorp location. Tebodin is able to
deal with any question that may arise in
the oil and gas sector. Our performance
in this first project for Vermillion has
marked the start of a new business
partnership.’
Currently, Tebodin is indeed working
on several other projects for Vermillion,
such as a water injection facility on an
old gas field and facilities on a newly
drilled winning location of which
Mr. Marten Bolt (Vermillion, left) on site with Mr. Folkert Kaman (Tebodin)
pleased with the completion within a
year. ‘Normally, these kinds of projects
take two to three years. A new approach
was required and BAM, Broekbakema
and Tebodin were able to deliver. They
also have a great track record on safety
and staying within budget. We realized
we needed a fully integrated building
team, with the engineers, architects and
builders working together as closely as
possible, in order to make a success of
this project. As we have worked with
Tebodin before, we knew we could
pull it off.’ However, as Tebodin project
manager Mr. Joost van Raaij explains,
working together as a tight unit was not
enough in itself. ‘Every party has put all
cards on the table to achieve this kind
of speed. We implemented a project
target cost model and demanded full
transparency in terms of all costs from
all parties. This was a critical success
factor in managing the project scope and
cost. All issues could be resolved quickly
based on their value to the project,
through collective commitment
to the targets.
Synthon’s new biopharmaceutical laboratory and office building
the construction starts in May.
Furthermore, Tebodin will work on
the replacement of the cooling agent
Freon with a more environmentally
friendly agent. This latest project
including the construction is foreseen
to be finished shortly after
summer 2012.
Speed and team work
A key factor contributing to the
acceleration of the construction process
was the decision to start building before
the design was completed. Mr. Van Raaij:
‘The design and procurement activities
were planned and executed in the sequence
of the construction activities, i.e. from
foundation to roof, structure to façade,
installations to internal finishing, and so on.
This put a big strain on the entire team to
make the right decisions at the right time
and keep each other well informed.
Mutual confidence between the parties
was pivotal in our achievement. We’ve
also benefited significantly by the use of
Lean principles, which aim at improved
efficiency by optimizing processes.’
In the end, the innovative cooperation
between Synthon, Tebodin, Broekbakema
and BAM has resulted in a very effective
project and significant savings in both
time and money.
The third bottom line
‘Sustainability is not good for business, it always costs too much and it limits
creativity.’ Most times, I discuss my ideas on sustainability with an audience
that already understands the importance of sustainable development.
However, sometimes, I still meet people that have no idea what sustainability
means. And those people always react like phrased in my first line.
Why is this the first reaction to environmental awareness? You could simply
say, it originates in the early seventies, when traditional production became
confronted with the real costs. Clean water, air, or soil could be a huge cost if
the operation had not been designed for that. That’s why we all have the idea
that sustainability always reduces profit.
But is that true? If we just consider the way we make profit, it does not only
depend on the investment in our installation. In fact, the profit depends on our
position in the market and whether that position is competitive enough. First
private enterprises became a success, because of the understanding of classical
economics. And so, the first bottom line for successful business is a proper
knowledge of market mechanisms. However, many of those early successful
industries were very unhealthy for the workers.
Just consider for a minute, how much money could you make in your business
nowadays, if you did not need to pay for employment conditions or if you
could hire more people, because they get a very low salary? Slaves would be
the best! So here the second bottom line appears. Of course we care for our
employees and we do no longer consider proper conditions too expensive
or too complicated to implement. Furthermore, since the seventies, as John
Elkington stated in his famous book “Cannibals with forks”, modern business
faces a triple bottom line. This third bottom line, by definition, makes our
business competitive, with no harm to people and no harm to the planet.
Here we are trailing behind. We still consider, for example, the destruction of
fragile ecosystems or mining in political unstable regions as part of the normal
way of doing business. And we consider it too expensive and too complicated
to change that. However, it is as unethical as using slavery for reduction
of employment costs. So let’s really start with taking this third bottom line
seriously and make it part of regular business, just like end-of-year bonuses
and healthy state-of-the art offices.
Largest wind
farm project in
Poland
Last year, international investment
company Green Bear Corporation
asked Tebodin in Warsaw, Poland,
to deliver consultancy services
and multi-branch detailed design
of a new wind farm. With an
output power of 48 MW, the
wind park at Linowo will be one
of the largest in Poland.
A walk through the park
Tebodin project manager Mr. Łukasz
Lewandowski relates the details of the
project: ‘Technical roads with crossings,
entrances, assembly platforms and crane
pads on the operating area, hardstands,
lay-bays, and foundations for 22 wind
turbines including technical installations.
The wind turbines are Vestas type V90
2.0 with power up to 2 MW each.’
A topographical survey and geotechnical
ground investigation were also part of
the project for Mr. Lewandowski and six
designers. It was the first time the Polish
team worked on a wind farm.
Pro-active support
Green Bear, with project manager
Ms. Magdalena Łabaziewicz,
commended Tebodin Poland on their
pro-active support in the administrative
procedures which led to timely project
completion. The project started mid
August 2010 and finished on schedule
with Tebodin obtaining the building
permit for the turbines and complete
driveways network on schedule at the
end of January 2011.
This project is, however, only the first
stage of a larger development by this
new client. Tebodin has been asked to
present proposals for two more stages
of the Linowo wind farm, which are a
30/110 kV power connection station,
110 kV power line and three more
wind turbines.
For DMV-Fonterra Excipients,
a major plant modernization in
the Netherlands was recently
brought to a successful
conclusion.
Foxhol, a village in the northern
Netherlands, is surrounded by potato
fields. Potato starch is the main
ingredient for the superdisintegrants
produced by DMV-Fonterra Excipients
(DFE), a joint venture between
Royal FrieslandCampina of the
Netherlands and Fonterra of New
Zealand. The joint venture is market
leader in pharmaceutical lactose and
superdisintegrants. Disintegrants
make tablets quickly break down and
dissolve in water. Both lactose and
superdisintegrants are ingredients
that are used to produce solid dose
medicines such as tablets.
Modernize and expand
‘Worldwide demand for
superdisintegrants is growing fast’, says
DFE supply chain manager Mr. Hans
Weverling. ‘Several years ago, it was
decided to modernize and expand the
thirty-year old Foxhol plant, rather than
move production to another country
altogether. This choice, motivated by
the plant’s great track record and staff’s
that the factory will be able to start
producing 2,000 hydraulic excavators
per year as of October 2013.
Adapting to new Russian
legislation
In the course of the last eighteen
months, Tebodin Russia has been
working hard to meet new legal
requirements and stay at the
forefront of market developments.
All licenses in the field of construction
and engineering in Russia had to be
changed on 1 January 2010, after the
government licensing was replaced by
a system of registered self-regulating
organizations (SRO’s). For each type of
activity, the respective SRO permit is
required to perform any construction or
design works.
Being a member of the International
Designers Association and International
Builders Union, Tebodin has since
worked continuously to expand the list
of permitted works. A prerequisite for
obtaining SRO permits is a sufficient
number of licensed personnel, in the fields
of both engineering and management.
Tebodin organized training programs to
enhance employees’ competencies in
regulatory and technical aspects.
The most recent step was made in April,
when a total of 36 specialists of Tebodin
Russia had attended these improvement
courses. As a result, Tebodin received
permits for an additional six different
types of design works for highly
Conference on Czech
industrial zones
Mr. Krˇížek of CzechInvest
With a strong position within
the industrial sector in Czech
Republic, Tebodin was invited
as an opinion maker at the
international conference ‘Industrial
Zones in Czech Republic’, held
in Prague.
Strategic industrial zones
Czech Republic offers prepared industrial
zones in the heart of Europe for all types
of investors, big and small, foreign and
domestic. A total of 1,539 hectares of
available space awaiting visitors are in a
handful of strategic industrial zones.
The conference on these industrial
zones was organized by investment
and business development agency
CzechInvest, in cooperation with the
Ministry of Industry and Trade. The event
featured representatives of the Ministry
and CzechInvest, the Association for
Foreign Investment, individual industrial
zones, investors and other experts
including Mr. Jan Bobek on behalf of
Tebodin Czech Republic.
Convincing benefits
‘The composition of investments in the
Czech Republic has changed recently
and industrial zones are adapting to the
trend. They can be used not only for
big projects,’ says Mr. Miroslav Krˇížek,
CEO of CzechInvest, adding: ‘Some
industrial zones are having higher number
of projects, some are less busy, however
the essential fact is that it is beneficial
to invest in the hearth of Europe. To
bring an investor into strategic industrial
zone requires team of experts focused
not only to finding the investor, but also
responsible for after care.’ Mr. Krˇížek
continues: ‘Our objective is to convince
investors that they will benefit from
entering into industrial zones. It is evident
that we play a key role in the fact that
companies such as Hyundai, Solar Turbines
and Škoda Auto have chosen strategic
industrial zones for their projects.’
Mr. Jan Bobek of Tebodin
Strong position
Tebodin has been involved in the
preparation of all three of these
investments mentioned by Mr. Krˇížek;
Logistics get the green light
P3 found the ideal Slovakian location for international logistics.
Proximity to a gas pipeline required assurance that safety would
be guaranteed. Tebodin provided accurate and convincing
documentation.
An easy flow of goods between Slovakia and its surrounding countries,
the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary – that was the goal of European
leading developer and asset manager of logistics parks PointPark Properties
(P3). They found their ideal location in the city of Lozorno, situated near the
D2 highway in the Bratislava region. In order to obtain the necessary zoning
and building permits for their planned distribution center, P3 had to convince
the permitting authorities of the safety of their plans in the vicinity of a
high-pressure natural gas pipeline.
Watertight documentation
Tebodin’s offices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia joined forces in the bid
for a contract to prepare the zoning and building permit documentation.
‘We beat the competition partly because we were able to offer a favorable
price,’ says Mr. Ondrěj Chaloupecký, project manager for Tebodin, ‘and after
a successful first round P3 asked us directly to continue our work in the
second phase.’
‘Local authorities rightly demanded watertight guarantees that safety in
the region would not be compromised’, says Mr. Pavol Podskoč, head of
development P3. ‘The expertise that Tebodin brought to the table enabled us
to clearly substantiate the validity of our designs. We highly appreciate their
work and look forward to working together with them in the future.’
Construction of
European Music
Center to build
talents
It’s not often that the signing of
an agreement is accompanied
by music. However, that was
the case when the ceremonial
start of the cooperation between
Tebodin Poland and the European
Penderecki Center for Music was
celebrated in style.
The European Music Center
Practice, perform and play
Tebodin Poland won the tender to act as
project supervisor for the construction
of the European Penderecki Center
for Music in the town of Lusławice
in Tarnow county, near the great
polish composer’s property, Krzysztof
Penderecki. The center will contain
a concert hall seating 550, with
accompanying educational, social and
residential facilities, substantial grounds,
parking lots and technical infrastructure.
It will be equipped with all necessary
equipment for the music sector.
A vision for music
The vision is to create a place where
young artists, mainly pianists and
composers but also vocalists and
instrumentalists, from Poland and other
parts of Europe will improve their
ability to interpret music created and
directed by modern living composers.
The center is to be a cultural institution
of international concern, unique in terms
of what it offers and its effects on the art
and artists from Europe and the world.
Constructing culture
The agreement was signed by Ms.
Adrianna Poniecka - Piekutowska,
Director of the Penderecki Center, and
Mr. Rafał Strugała, office director of
Tebodin Poland in Cracow. The project
is funded by the Minister of Culture, the
Malopolska Region and the Krzysztof
Penderecki Academy Association.
Construction works will start in 2011
and the Center will be ready to accept
the talented youth from around the
world starting from 2012. The next step
for Tebodin is to prepare and proceed
tender procedure for general contractor
of the investment, to erect an object that
will serve generations of young artists
from Europe and the world.
Traffic study in Gdańsk
How to protect the environment
while allowing traffic to flow
more easily in and out of Gdańsk?
Tebodin Poland is currently
conducting a case study for the
city authorities into the upgrade
of a crucial traffic junction and its
surrounding area.
Built in the 1970s, the Szadółki junction
in the southern part of Gdańsk no longer
meets the requirements of modern
traffic, nor of the current building
and technical regulations. The city
is therefore planning to expand and
upgrade the junction and widen and
reconstruct two of the roads it connects.
The initial program for reconstruction
includes four variants.
With a full range of services and an extensive knowledge network Tebodin assists clients in various market sectors:
Food & Beverage market
Providing the world’s population with food and beverages of an exceedingly high
quality forms the challenge for companies active in the Health & Nutrition sector.
Many of these multinational companies seek to develop production facilities
close to consumer markets.
This often means production on a truly global scale.
Tebodin has supported and is servicing many reputable multinationals in the
realization of (production) assets in many different countries. Providing a
consistent high quality service throughout the Tebodin network of offices is
paramount in this respect.
All Tebodin offices operate under the same regime when it comes to quality,
occupational safety, health and environment.
Rolle, project coordinator on behalf of
the city, ‘is an important node in the
flow of traffic between Gdańsk, the other
cities in the Tri-City area and the national
highway network. It is situated in a
closely built-up area, at a short distance
from two other reconstructed junctions,
the Karczemki and Kowale junctions.
All consequences of the four variants,
including the environmental ones, need
to be carefully considered before we
reach our decision.’
Building on expertise
‘This is our first contract from the
city of Gdańsk,’ says Ms. Katarzyna
Kos´ciukiewicz of Tebodin Poland, ‘and
we were able to bring our accumulated
expertise in infrastructure to the table at
the tendering stage.’
The contract for the preparation of a
‘concept design of split-level junction
turned the void into a graduation project
for students Mr. Tom Reijers and
Mr. Wesley van Dinteren, on plausible
chances of failure of tank containers.
From August 2010 to February 2011,
they conducted independent research
with many parties involved in the use
of tank containers.
Several Tebodin
clients generously
supplied
information
from the field.
The investigation
resulted in a broad
view of the subject
and issue, creating a
for all parties involved
in assessing the risks of
Groundbreaking conclusions
Mr. Broeren: ‘Conclusions are that
the use of tank containers for the
so in that light it is very innovative. The
results can be used widely, and the report
is getting due attention: an article has
already been placed in a Dutch hazmat
magazine and we are now organizing a
symposium on the subject.’
Clean water and sanitation
in Burkina Faso
In Burkina Faso, one in five
children never reaches the age
of five. Step by step, UNICEF is
turning this shameful statistic
into a thing of the past. Its
Water & Sanitation Program,
supported by Tebodin, is
bearing fruit in one of the
world’s poorest countries.
About 10,000 people who previously
did not have access to clean drinking
water are now within close distance of
one of 32 newly created water wells.
The project also made it possible for
families to acquire ‘rickshaws’ for easy
water transport.
A total of 5,000 families now have
their own private squat toilet, which
provides hygiene without the need for
water. The people in the villages were
first educated about their
proper use and 170 local mason
bricklayers received professional
construction training.
Tebodin World, July 2011
Led by the women’s movement
‘Association Chant de Femmes’,
9,500 women in 107 villages have
learned about hygiene, the benefits of
washing hands frequently, safe food
preparation, water storage and good
child and baby care. Especially women
can make great contributions to their
family’s health situation, and will pass
on the new habits to their children.
In 129 other villages, 10,000 more
women are due to be trained in
the same manner.
The many positive local reactions have
prompted new initiatives and extended
the Program’s reach from 70 to
over 220 villages and a total of
350,000 people. However, the work
is not done yet. The Program will
continue until at least 2015 to cover
the entire country and allow every
child a good start in life.
