38 | SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2009 | STUDENTS REPORT: ECOLOGICAL SUPPORT FOR THE STYRIA LINE THE ARTERIES OF THE GREEN HEART Looking out the window while driving through Styria, the masts follow you quietly. Highways and power lines run along the landscape, hand in hand. That’s how it was meant to be: “Wherever we can, we follow the course of the highways and run the lines in tandem”, says one of our guides. These are the main arteries of modern life. Wind and hydropower are among the most efficient sources of energy available in Austria. Stable power lines are needed to fully use the potential of alternative energy. The old power grids could still transport, but with high energy losses, and were very instable because they were overburdened. The new energy supply system is not only more efficient, it also allows for power to be transported reliably from the producer to the consumer. TO THE BEAT OF OUR GREEN HEART On the way home, the green heart on the highway that says “Styria” has taken on a new meaning. Hot on the heels of sustainability, side by side with the experts. This experience has made us aware of how important sustainability is, and the great responsibility it brings. That morning, our trip to Styria was dotted with snow, but now the clouds have lifted and the red evening light shines upon us. More and more, the blood in our veins is turning from red to green. Herbs or weeds? Hard to tell without a closer look!
