Abstract: Complexity and size of organic molecules in chemical and
pharmaceutical research grows constantly, making their synthesis more
and more challenging. Recent developments in the transition metal catalyzed
cross coupling reactions make this method an efficient and fast
way of synthesizing organic molecules. The coupling of non-activated
alkyl halides however is still very problematic. Efficient solutions for this
important class of compounds were found during our research work. We
prepared a well-defined and easily synthesized nickel pincer complex
[(MeN2N)Ni-Cl]. This complex is an efficient catalyst for Kumada and
Sonogashira coupling of non-activated alkyl halides and direct C-H alkylation.
The activity and selectivity of the catalyst was checked on a wide
range of substrates. The products of the reactions were separated in
good to excellent yields. The reactions are chemo-selective and tolerate
many important functional groups. Moreover, in the presence of different
halide atoms in the molecule, several coupling reactions can be done
consecutively, allowing access to compounds bearing several functional
groups. One of the biggest advantages is the versatility of this catalyst,
allowing the use of the same catalyst for a wide range of coupling reactions.
Utilization of this catalyst and developed methodologies in the laboratorial
and industrial processes can improve and facilitate the synthesis
of important organic compounds and pharmaceutical products.
We are one of the best European postgraduate programs in
Chemistry with a high quality and impact publicaon record.
We have more than 175 PhD students with excellent academic
and research record.
In 2011 and 2012, two students from our program received the
EPFL thesis award, the highest graduate student disncon in
EPFL (only 2 awards are given every year).
In 2011 and 2012 around 30 students won awards for best
presentaons or posters at different internaonal events.
Our postgraduate students provide important teaching service to
the students at EPFL and UNIL, and they receive excellent
teaching evaluaons.
The EDCH has a very well organized structure and it has
demonstrated a connuous improvement in almost all
performance metrics.
EDCH promotes and financially supports students to follow
conferences and workshops outside the EPFL.
Research in the laboratories of the EDCH faculty members is at
the forefront of all modern research areas in chemistry and
chemical engineering, and our faculty are leaders in their areas
of experse as it is demonstrated by their publicaon record and
its impact factor, and the number of awards they receive every
year.
The students can select from a large number of advanced and
interdisciplinary courses in EPFL and abroad.
TIPS FROM PHD STUDENTS
Swiss Course on Medicinal Chemistry
There are mainly pharmaceutical Companies and about 10-
20 PhD students out of 150 participants.
It takes place every two years. The subject is the discovery
of new drugs and there are many conferences on different
drug classes, with examples (eg. How this drug is now used
on the market - since the discovery of the active molecule
until the final drug ).
The lectures are very clear and well presented. There is
much to learn and perhaps it is good to encourage PhD
students to participate. It helps to give a purpose for those
involved in Synthesis that may not see the aim sometimes.
It can of course also create some links with people already
working in Pharma Industry either in Switzerland or
elsewhere.
What did you find useful?
Peer review of our own texts
Everything was very useful, in particular practice in
writing the title, abstract and introduction.
Good discussion in the group about scientific
writing.
I learned a lot about how to structure an article and
how to write clearly
