All grade 8 students earned a “Pass” on <strong>the</strong> DELF<br />

and will be awarded <strong>the</strong>ir Level 1 Certificates in<br />

coming weeks! Congratuations to Asma Rekhif,<br />

Hammad Sarwar and Aadam Samiullah for scoring<br />

better than 90% on this exam! Congratualtions<br />

also to for scoring better than 80%.<br />

This shows solid achievement and <strong>the</strong> examiners<br />

expressed <strong>the</strong>ir appreciation again and again for<br />

<strong>the</strong> courteous behavior of LAS students. They<br />

noted that <strong>the</strong>y do not find such well-behaved<br />

students in o<strong>the</strong>r schools in town. Congratulations<br />

to Ms Jafar for her work and for <strong>the</strong> achievement<br />

of her students.<br />

Grade 8 Semester Exams – May 2012<br />

Student and Parent Information<br />

Excerpt from <strong>the</strong> MS Student Parent Handbook,<br />

p 15<br />

• Given that one of <strong>the</strong> purposes of <strong>the</strong> middle<br />

school experience is to prepare students for<br />

<strong>the</strong> rigors of high school, grade 8 students will<br />

take semester exams in each of <strong>the</strong> five core<br />

subjects at <strong>the</strong> end of semester two (math,<br />

science, social studies, language arts, and<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r French or Urdu).<br />

• The exams will be cumulative, covering<br />

knowledge and skills taught throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

semester.<br />

• The weighting for <strong>the</strong> exams shall be <strong>the</strong> same<br />

as one unit test and will count as part of <strong>the</strong><br />

fourth quarter grades.<br />

• Students who are absent on <strong>the</strong> day of <strong>the</strong><br />

exam are subject to a 10 percent grade<br />

reduction.<br />

General<br />

• Exams will be held from Thursday, May 24th,<br />

Friday, May 25th and Monday, May 28th.<br />

Makeup exams will be made up in <strong>the</strong> afternoon<br />

on Monday, May 28th. Examinations must be<br />

taken at <strong>the</strong> prescribed times.<br />

• Exams will be held in <strong>the</strong> MS Language Arts<br />

and Social Studies classrooms.<br />

• Examinations are scheduled so that students<br />

take no more than two exams per day.<br />

• The exam periods fall during <strong>the</strong> regular first<br />

and second period timings of 7.40 to 9.10 am<br />

and 9.25 to 10.55 am.<br />

• Students will be assigned to an exam room<br />

and be seated randomly.<br />

• Students are expected to arrive by 7.30 am at<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest. The exams will start on time and<br />

students who are late will not be allowed sit<br />

that exam.<br />

• Mobile phones will be collected before <strong>the</strong><br />

exams, as usual.<br />

• Students are to bring <strong>the</strong>ir own water bottles,<br />

pens and any o<strong>the</strong>r equipment required for<br />

<strong>the</strong> exams.<br />

Guidelines<br />

• Respect <strong>the</strong> examination times and be early.<br />

You are expected to report for attendance<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> exam rooms at 7.30 and 9.20 am.<br />

• No talking, whispering or any action that might<br />

be considered by <strong>the</strong> proctors as inappropriate.<br />

There is zero tolerance for such behavior. Any<br />

talking will result in a zero for <strong>the</strong> exam.<br />

• Oversleeping, traffic and such do NOT<br />
