Common Name: Mariana wandering butterfly, Marianas rusty<br />

Chamorro Name: Ababang<br />

Scientific Name: Vagrans egestina<br />

SPECIES DESCRIPTION<br />

A very rare butterfly, endemic to the islands of <strong>Guam</strong> and Rota. Body color is primarily orange and black,<br />

with black bordering the wings. A large orange irregular shape extends from the forewings to the hindwings.<br />

Females and males are similar in body color and size. (1)<br />

LISTING STATUS<br />

A federal candidate for Endangered Species Act listing. (2) In <strong>Guam</strong>, considered a Species of Greatest<br />

Conservation Need. (3)<br />

THREATS<br />

Threats include habitat degradation and removal, competition from introduced butterfly species, disease,<br />

predation by ants, and parasitism by wasps. (1)<br />

ECOLOGY<br />

Larvae feed on a plant species (Maytenus thompsonii) that is endemic to the Mariana Islands. Adults are good<br />

fliers and can move considerable distances. (1)<br />

HISTORICAL AND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION<br />

Historically, found on <strong>Guam</strong> and CNMI (Rota), but now occurs with any certainty only on Rota. (1)<br />
