FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…
Last week the school held AFL and Rugby League Awards
Nights. These nights are a wonderful opportunity for
parents and students to dress up, enjoy a formal occasion,
celebrate the successes of the season and expose students
to some very important messages in relation to success at
school, in football and life. It was a delight to hear the
stories of AFL past students Daniel Haynes (airconditioning
apprentice), James Nelis (AFL Development
Officer) and Ryan Thompson (electrician). At the Rugby
League night, Josh Jaggle (contracted with the Broncos
National Youth Competition in 2012 and employed as a personal trainer and a
fitter of car exhausts) delivered an excellent speech and he and Joel Bailey (who
has debuted for the Broncos Nation Youth Competition and is contracted to play
Queensland Cup for Norths in 2012 and is employed as a life guard and labourer)
were informative and entertaining in a “Talking Football from the Couch” session.
The past students delivered messages concerning the importance of being prepared
to work hard to get what you want, the need for resilience when you get injured
and want to get back playing and the importance of taking advantage of
opportunities.
On Tuesday 25 October at 7:00 pm the musicianship of our instrumental/music
students will be on display at the Sandgate DSHS Annual Showcase Concert. It
starts at 7:00 pm in the Performance Hall.
On Wednesday 26 October Sports Awards Night is scheduled at 6:00 pm for a
6:30pm start in the Performance Hall.
The high standard of work of our Art students will be on display in an exhibition,
“Reality is the Illusion” at the Artrageous Art Gallery, Loftus Street Deagon. The
opening will be between 3:30-4:30 On Friday 28 October 2011.
Academic success will be celebrated on Wednesday 2 November in the
Performance Hall at Awards Night starting at 7:00 pm and the week finishes with
Dance Night on Friday 4 November starting at 7:00 pm in the Performance Hall.
At Sandgate we believe it is important to educate the whole child including
academically, emotionally, socially, culturally and in sport. With the focus on
NAPLAN and OP results over the past few years, our celebrations at the end of the
year remind us that such testing is only a small part of what constitutes a good education for
young people. At Sandgate we are proud to say that we do achieve the vision of our school
“to expand the horizons of our students” giving them the skills and attitudes to pursue their dreams,
contribute to the community and most importantly to become decent human beings.
Finally, because Valedictory has been scheduled for Wednesday 16 th October, the P&C meeting
has been rescheduled to Wednesday 9 November. It will be the final meeting of the year and
we will be discussing the future of the Building Fund.

PRINCIPALS BREAKFAST
On Wednesday 12 October 2011, we had 25 of our local Principals
and Year 7 Teachers join us for Breakfast on the verandah of our
new CRIMS facility. Our visitors were wonderfully catered for by
our Year 11 Hospitality Students and our exceptional Music
Students provided live entertainment while they dined on their
delicious breakfast. Mr Ferguson launched the 2012 Primary Links
Program, where Year 6 & 7 Primary School classes visit our school
and participate in special classes in Science, Maths, Industrial
Technology and Hospitality. Mrs Gentle outlined our vision for the
CRIMS centre and other new facilities. Ms Kroker demonstrated
some of the outstanding work done by our IT students. These
students wrote a training module to show teachers how to use the
Learning Place site in their classrooms. Following Ms Kroker’s
presentation, the visitors were taken on a conducted tour of our new
facilities around the school, including the Mathematics wing of the
CRIMS centre, and the refurbished classrooms underneath F Block.
The breakfast was very well received by our visitors who made
many favourable comments about the outstanding nature of our
new resources. Our thanks to all the staff and students who
contributed to the success of the day.

WEAR RED ON DAY FOR DANIEL
By wearing red on Day for Daniel students
and parents will be joining tens of thousands
of people across Australia in making the day
a success.
Denise and Bruce Morcombe have actively
promoted child safety in Queensland since
2005 through the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, and they have
invited Queenslanders to help promote child safety awareness by
wearing red on 28 October.
The foundation aims to make the world a safer place for children
through Day for Daniel, an annual event which helps educate
children about their personal safety.

GUIDANCE OFFICER
The Australian Government has launched the Young Worker
Toolkit for young people aged 15-24 years old. The Toolkit is an
online reference tool that has been optimized for smart phone
browsing. The Young Worker Toolkit is available at

SAFE PARTY TIPS
As the end of the year approaches and the festive season begins
many of our Year 12’s will embark on Schoolies week. It is
important to remember a few safety tips to help you have fun, stay
safe and remember the night before.
YOU ARE IN CONTROL
• Know your own limits and plan to party safe
• Who will be affected by your choices and actions?
• Think about the consequences of your actions
• If your not in control – who is?
IF DRINKING ….. KEEP IN MIND
• You don’t have to drink to have a good time
• It’s ok not to drink – make up your own mind about
drinking
• Eat before and while you are drinking
• Mixing drinks can be dangerous! Know what you are
drinking – drink spiking happens!!
FRIENDS FOR LIFE
• Look out for your friends at all times
• Help them if they are in need…. no matter what the
situation
• Always let friends know where you are and what you are
doing…. they need to look out for you too!
• Call home or for help if you need to!
• Make it home safely….. together!

VICKY WILSON CUP
Recently Sandgate’s Vicki Wilson Cup team played in the State
Finals at Mt Gravatt. From 178 teams Sandgate made the top 16
teams in the state. The girls played 7 amazing and hard fought
games to place 5 th in the state. This is a massive achievement and
the girls should be extremely proud of themselves. Each girl in the
team made a huge contribution to this result and each and every one
of you should be proud of your individual input. The top four
placing teams at the end of the weekend were all private schools
and so we are very proud to be able to say that Sandgate is the top
placing state school in netball across the state.
A special mention needs to go to Kellie Drew for her Merit Award,
she was one of 16 players chosen for her effort, ability and
consistency over the weekend. We would also like to thank
everyone who came out to see the girls play throughout the whole
competition; they have really appreciated your support. Particular
mention must go to Mr Monaghan and Mr Lucas for making it
there for the State Finals.

RUGBY UNION 7-A-SIDE
On Tuesday, 11 October, our year 8 and 9 students played in a
7-a-side Rugby Union competition. When we arrived at Shaw
Sports I was surprised at the number of teams attending and upon
hearing we had to play 7 games on the day. All this was going to
be a big effort for all the players, and it was hot.
To our year eights credit, they decided they would stick together as
a team knowing they would possibly have to play teams made up of
year 9s. I thought they were brave but ultimately would struggle.
How wrong was I! Four wins, 1 draw and 2 losses to end up third
on the day. Well done year 8.

Congratulations must also go to our Year 9 team who went through
the competition undefeated to make the final.
The year nines were then invited to play the final against Kedron 1.
As we drew against Kedron in the previous game and we knew they
had played Rugby Union before, we come up with a new game plan
to take out the final. It was not going to be easy as Kedron really
worked together well as a team. They started very well clearing out
the ruck area with aggression and skill. We could feel the contact
from the side line. Kedron scored the first try and we were 5 nil
down. The boys absorbed all the impacts from Kedron and started
backing each other up and scored the next try. Half time came and
the boys were exhausted from the day but keen to go out and give it
all they had. Sandgate went out and played with a great display of
footwork and passing to score another three tries to beat Kedron in
the final 20-5. Well done year 9 as it was a hard battle but you
stuck together. They came out number 1 on the day!
A special mention has to go to Kruis Collins and Jake Dalton, two
year 12 students, who assisted with the teams all day. Thanks.
Also it was great to have the support of many parents on the day
and I am sure the boys appreciated your support. I personally
would like to thank all the players for their behaviour on the day. I
was very proud to be a Sandgate Teacher with such fine students on
display for all to see. The way you played, your sportsmanship
and the manners demonstrated on the day were a credit to you and
your families.

Due to the end of year functions the next P&C meeting has been
brought forward one week to the 9 th November 2011 at 7 pm in the
Common room above Café Ibis.
This will also be the last P&C meeting for 2011.
Special notice is also given that the Building Fund within the P&C
constitution will be discussed at this meeting.
DANCE NIGHT
It’s that time of year again! The Sandgate District Annual Dance
Night will be held on Friday, November 4 in the Performance Hall.
The night showcases the hard work that our dance students have
put into their studies throughout the year. The concert will
commence at 7:00pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. Tickets will
be sold at the door and can be purchased for the following prices:
Adults $7, Primary School children $5 and Family Pass (2 adults, 2
children) $20. Please come and support the talented students here at
Sandgate District State High School; it’s not to be missed!
