RABBI AARON D. RUBINGER’S MESSAGE 

Dear Friends, 

In the Book of Psalms there are 15 particular psalms 

known as Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). These 

were psalms that people wrote concerning their 

“going up” to Jerusalem. One that is particularly 

well known is Psalm 126 which is used liturgically 

in the Birchat Hamazone (grace a� er meals). 

What makes this psalm so powerful and so descriptive is that it was 

wri� en by someone who had returned to Jerusalem a� er having been 

in the Babylonian exile. Speaking for all those with him, upon arriving 

in Jerusalem, the psalmist penned so movingly: 

When the Lord restored our exiles to Zion (Jerusalem), it felt like we 

were dreaming! Then our mouths were full of laughter, joyous songs 

were on our tongue! 

You see, it felt like an absolute miracle to them! If felt so unbelievable 

in their eyes to, at last, see the fulfi llment of their highest dream, and 

so their joy truly overwhelmed their emotions. 

Dear congregants, as we dedicate our new beautiful synagogue 

campus in Maitland, I must say, both for me personally, but, also, I 

know, for so many of you, that this too feels like we must be dreaming, 

doesn’t it? Has it not succeeded our wildest expectations? Five years 

ago, or even 3 years ago, did you really, really imagine that it would 

turn out like this? This “dream,” this absolute miracle, was made 

possible by those who, during the most diffi cult of economic times, 

donated so generously and by those who worked so incredibly hard 

on one of a whole host of commi� ees related to the construction of 

our new synagogue. 

But not for a moment do I imagine that God’s support was not by 

our side! None of this, I know, would have been possible without the 

help of God who inspired us with the needed courage, who instilled 

within us a deep sense of purpose and who gave us the tremendous 

will and determination to make this dream into an actual reality. 

Hodu L’Adoshem Ke Tov, Ke L’olam Hasdo 

Great is the Lord’s love for us. 

And the faithfulness of the Lord is everlasting. Hallelujah!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A NOTE FROM YOUR CANTOR 

My fellow congregants, 

The dedication of our new 

synagogue in Maitland is now 

in our past. I fi nd it interesting 

that many of our congregants 

still have not taken a tour of the 

new synagogue. If you have not 

done so, I encourage it. With an 

eye to detail, it is a beautiful and 

very functional facility in many ways. We still 

have much to do, and you will see small 

improvements and changes over time. Some of 

the changes and additions will be prior to the 

High Holy Days; others may be into next year. 

I would also encourage our congregants to use 

the facility. It is perfect for B’Nai Mitzvah and 

weddings, and has many other uses. We recently 

had our fi rst wedding and the comments were 

absolutely wonderful. We have many ways to 

accommodate you and your guests, and the 

congregation as a whole. Please do not hesitate 

to contact Sharon White for additional information 

regarding having your, or your business’, event, 

whether large or small, at Congregation Ohev 

Shalom.

Dear Friends, 

A few months ago I told you that 

the Geboff s and the Robucks 

would be leading a trip to Israel 

in June, 2012. Planning has 

continued and I am now able to 

give you more detailed 

information. The trip will leave 

on June 11 and return June 21. The itinerary is very 

exciting and includes some new stops that I have 

personally not visited before. Rather than write an 

entire article detailing the itinerary, there is a fl yer, 

soon to be replaced by a brochure, in the synagogue. 

You can pick one up or you can call and have one 

sent to your residence. More importantly, we have 

actual pricing. I realize that pricing is usually the 

number one question everyone has. Here is a brief 

outline of the pricing, based on 45 participants. 

• $2,945.00 for each paid adult, based on double 

occupancy 

• $2,710.00 for 3rd person in room over age 12 

• $1,985.00 for child 12 and under staying with 

parents 

• $1,735.00 for each child 12 and under staying 

with parents, maximum 2 children per room (total 

of 4 people in a room) 

• $2145.00 for each child 12 and under staying in 

a separate room – usually connecting. Minimum 

2 children 

• $4,240 for each adult, single occupancy 

Airfare is not included, so you need to fi gure that 

in to your cost. The fl ight leaves from New York, 

so many people will use points or miles for that leg 

of the fl ight. They can also be used for the trans- 

Atlantic portion if accepted by El Al.

RABBI DAVID KAY’S MESSAGE 

Haveirim Y’karim – 

Dear Friends – 

As most of you know, Joanne 

and I spend the fi rst two weeks 

of the fi rst summer session at 

Camp Ramah Darom, the 

Conservative movement’s 

regional overnight camp in the beautiful 

mountains of northern Georgia. In addition to my 

teaching and other duties , my favorite part of 

being at camp is seeing the 30-40 Ohev Shalom 

young people there as campers and staff . 

I can’t describe how amazingly upli� ing it is to 

see a community of 700 campers and staff “doing 

Jewish” 24/7. For so many of our campers – and 

those from the far-fl ung area, covering states from 

Texas to the Carolinas, which Ramah Darom serves 

– camp is one of the most signifi cant experiences 

in their lives. The friendships forged at camp – 

whether Ramah or elsewhere – and through other 

summer youth programs of the Conservative 

movement such as USY on Wheels and Israel 

Pilgrimage, truly last a lifetime. 

The strength of those friendships and the value 

of the community which creates them were in 

evidence this summer especially, when a freak 

boating accident claimed the life of one of the 

oldest group of campers at Ramah Darom. In the 

hours and days which followed, Joanne and I were 

awestruck and humbled. The response of the 

campers, the staff , the camp administration, and 

the family of the young man showed us what a 

community – and a Jewish community in particular 

– is truly meant to be. 

We should be deeply proud of our regional Camp 

Ramah and of our Conservative movement for 

cultivating the soil and planting the seeds which 

produced this inspirational reaction to an 

unthinkable tragedy. We should be especially 

proud of our own young people, who were a 

signifi cant part of the beautiful thing that grew 

out of the sadness. 

An important part of what makes the camp 

experience (as well as the Kadima and USY 

experience) so meaningful and signifi cant, are 

Shabbat services. It’s hard to put a name to what 

makes it so special – it’s the energy, the melodies, 

the singing, the participation, the ru’ah . . . all this 

and more. We can’t reproduce the synergy of 

hundreds of middle-schoolers and teens at their 

own program – or of dozens of college students 

at Hillel, or young adults at a havurah in someone’s 

living room – but we can bring the essence of that 

experience home. 

On August 26th, we’ll be launching a monthly 

Erev Shabbat service which will do just that. The 

style, format, and melodies will come from Jewish 

summer camps, Kadima and USY, Hillel and 

havurot. So if you’re wondering what it is that 

makes kids count down the days until camp each 

year, you’ll fi nally have the chance to fi nd out. Be 

sure to join us!

COS Sisterhood 

Like the sands of the hourglass, so are the days of 

summer fl eeting by. The thoughts of vacations, 

ge� ing the kids off to camp, and enjoying a carefree 

lifestyle are quickly turning into thoughts of summer 

ending, ge� ing the kids ready for school and 

returning to a life of structure. 

Not to worry! Your Sisterhood sisters are here to 

help with the transition. Take a break and spend 

Sunday a� ernoon, August 7th, playing Mah Jong 

at COS. You should have already received the 

invitation to Mah Jong, Munchies and Mimosas. It 

promises to be not only an a� ernoon of fun and 

relaxation, but one to let your hair down and forget 

the ensuing “rat race.” Please take note that all 

proceeds will be used to replace some of the worn 

Eitz Haim prayer books. 

Sisterhood looks forward to welcoming you at the 

Family Schmoozarama at Westmonte Park on 

Sunday, August 14th at 5:30 p.m. This subtle end to 

summer is a wonderful way to share your family 

experiences, swim, BBQ and to just spend time 

together. 

Because the High Holy Days are in late September, 

Sisterhood has decided to hold the Paid Up 

Membership Brunch on Sunday, September 18th. 

This aff ords us the opportunity to welcome our long 

standing members, our new members and all those 

who will be choosing COS as their spiritual home 

before the holidays.

Thanks from the Move Committee 

Last October, at its fi rst meeting, the Move Commi� ee 

set at its goal, “ To provide an effi cient and cost 

eff ective move to our new building with a minimum 

interruption to daily operations.“ These goals have 

been achieved and it is now time to recognize all of 

those who have given of their time and energy. 

The Move Commi� ee members who established 

the move plan, inventoried all of the items to 

be moved, and provided constructive 

r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s . T h e P r o f e s s i o n a l , 

Administrative and Education Staff s who packed 

their individual areas, the Maintenance Staff who 

time and again loaded and unloaded portable 

shipping containers, and the members of our 

congregation and their families who volunteered 

to make this move possible. 

The Gi� Shop move was organized by Mardi Shader, 

who with volunteers from the Sisterhood and friends 

and family, packed, loaded, moved and unpacked 

the Gi� Shop inventory. 

The move of furniture, graciously donated by Mary 

and Hilton Geartner and Avie Abramowitz, was 

organized by Eric Schwartz and accomplished with 

the help of members from the Men’s Club. Richard 

Schwartz and Bart Neuman were responsible for 

pu� ing together the team of volunteers for the major 

move Memorial Day weekend and for obtaining 

trailers supplied by Alan Bloom and Bart Neuman 

and a truck provided by Ed Danuff . Since the move 

had to be accomplished in stages to accommodate 

a Bar Mitzvah and summer camp, it was necessary 

to repeatedly call upon the Men’s Club to provide 

volunteers, and they came through every time. Lisa 

Schwartz and Roz Fuchs helped identify those items 

in the kitchen that were to be moved. 

The congregation owes each of you a heart felt

I’m all for egalitarianism, and I’m totally comfortable 

with including the names of the Matriarchs in the fi rst 

paragraph of the Amidah as we now do. Recently, 

though, one of my children asked me how we can change 

such an important prayer a� er hundreds of years. So 

. . . how can we? 

Dear OOTMOB – 

- Out of the Mouths of Babes 

One of the single most important moments in the 

development of Jewish liturgy was the invention 

of the printing press. Before mass production of 

books made printed matter accessible and 

aff ordable for the general public, the only way to 

make copies of documents was through the timeconsuming 

and expensive process of manuscripts. 

In the ancient and medieval worlds, these handwri� 

en books were largely in the possession of 

the wealthy and the privileged – and the majority 

of Jews tended to be neither. Although Jewish 

communities made sure to have Torah scrolls, 

and manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinic 

texts available for public reading and study, it was 

cost-prohibitive for there to be a full copy of the 

liturgy available for each individual worshipper, 

or to expect everyone to aff ord his or her own. 

The basic structure of the mat’bei’a shel t’fi lah – 

“the seal of prayer,” the statutory core of each 

service – is laid out in the Mishnah, the authoritative 

collection of Rabbinic law dating back some 2,000 

years. For the Amidah, the central prayer of each 

service which takes the place of the mandatory 

by Rabbi David Kay 

sacrifi ces laid out in the Torah, the general theme 

and concluding line for each of the 18 (later 19) 

blessings are described. Without a copy of a 

standardized text before them, Jewish worshippers 

must have recited memorized text or improvised 

around the required themes, concluding with the 

closing lines recorded in the Mishnah. 

The specifi c content of the blessings of the Amidah 

was therefore rather fluid. Authoritative 

manuscripts from the Geonic and medieval 

periods, dating back over 1,000 years, display 

variations in the texts of the blessings of the 

Amidah and include forms which diff er from 

those we consider the “traditional” versions today. 

In fact, variations in the liturgy, including in some 

of the blessings of the Amidah, are part of the 

distinction between Ashkenazic, Sefardic, and 

other well-established traditions. 

The inclusion of the Imahot (“mothers” = 

Matriarchs) in Siddur Sim Shalom, the offi cial 

prayer book of the Conservative movement, was 

the result of process of discussion, debate, and 

scholarly research. While the historical fl exibility 

of the text of the liturgy clearly allowed for changes 

or additions which were consistent with the 

mandated theme of the fi rst blessing of the 

Amidah, that wasn’t enough. There needed to be 

suffi cient reason to change a long-standing custom 

of mentioning only the Patriarchs, as well as a 

process for determining the appropriate form of 

the text for the inclusion of the Matriarchs. 

Even a summary of that process would take up 

more space than we have here. Suffi ce it to say, 

then, that the conclusion of the process determined 

that including the names of the Imahot was not 

only permissible, but could be done in a liturgically 

authentic way.


Youth and Family Education

We are FINALLY in our new 

home. The wandering for a 

year like Moses and the 

Israelites is over and we have 

reached the Promised Land! 

The boxes are unpacked, the 

classrooms and youth lounge 

are set up and we are ready for 

a wonderful year. 

I would be remiss if I didn’t say how awesome 

MACHANEH OHEV was! We had 90 campers 

and 30 staff involved in a full week of Jewish fun! 

Todah Rabbah to the Joseph and Frieda Ross 

Foundation for making it possible. 

August 21 is the fi rst day of school. Parents are 

invited to a Parent brunch and schmooze from 

11:30-12:30 that morning. The teaching staff has 

worked over the summer to plan and update our 

curriculum and how we teach. Our 6th and 7th 

grade programs have been revamped. Each 

teacher is teaching one subject so all of the students 

will have all the teachers and we will also mix 

each class so they can be with many diff erent 

friends. Our 7th graders will be having their own 

Minyan with Cantor Robuck each Sunday 

morning. Our K-3rd graders start each Sunday 

with Havdallah and 4th and 5th graders have 

Mini Minyan each Sunday. In January our 3rd

Minyan so they can start to learn the prayers on 

a more challenging level. 

We welcome Ann Pardes to our staff . Ann will 

be teaching Gesher Pre K and comes to us from 

South Florida. Ann has served as the director of 

several Early Childhood centers both in the Jewish 

and general community. She has taught for many 

years and we look forward to her sharing her 

knowledge and experience with our Gesher 

children. Ivy Wolfe and Be� y Monroe will be 

teaching our Kitah Gan/Kindergarten classes. 

Miss Be� y as many of the children know her has 

taught many of our early childhood classes and 

worked with the youngest children at 

MACHANEH OHEV. Mrs. Wolfe taught Pre K 

last year and is now back in Kitah Gan, a grade 

she has taught for a very long time. 

We have had a great response to our new policy 

of welcoming children in grades Pre K-2nd to our 

school for one year without their families being 

members. Our hope is that once they are here, 

they won’t want to leave! 

The focus for the year for the teaching staff is the 

“practice of teaching.” As a staff and individuals, 

we are looking not only at what we teach, but

how we teach. Learning in most ways has to be 

experiential. We learn by doing. Teaching is a 

relationship between teacher and student, among 

students, between parents and teachers, Madrichim 

and teachers and Madrichim and students. That 

dynamic is crucial in creating an environment of 

respect and trust where learning can take place. 

On August 14 everyone is invited to meet their 

teachers and fi nd their classrooms from 11:30- 

12:30. 

I am excited to share some of the new programs 

that we are off ering for our children and families. 

For our 2-4 year old set, in addition to the existing 

Mishpacha Mania, Kabbalat and Kibbitz, Shabbat 

Shindig and Happy Hours and Kinderkumsitz, 

Ela Crespin will be teaching “What’s Jewish 

About…?” This is a parent assisted class one 

Sunday a month form 10-noon. Each class will 

focus on everyday things such as animals, food 

and the family and teach what is Jewish about 

them. Hebrew, stories, cra� s, movement will all 

be part of the class. Kinderkumsitz will take place 

at 11:30 on the same weeks. Families enrolled in 

“What’s Jewish About…?” will automatically 

participate in Kimderkumsitz but others may join 

at 11:30. 

We are all very proud of our wonderful youth 

groups and know what a powerful impact they 

make on the Jewish identity of our youth. We are 

introducing MACHANEH OHEV LITE for 

children in grades K-3. MACHANEH OHEV LITE 

will meet 4 times during the year to expose the 

children to the world of youth group. A fee will 

be charged for each program and COS members 

and children who are enrolled in school are 

welcome. 

Several times a year we are off ering a Family 

Service and Shabbat dinner geared toward families 

with 2-5th graders but not limited to this age. 

Dinner will be from 5:30-6:30. Services will begin 

at 6:30. We will use the Siddur Shema Yisrael that 

our 3rd graders receive at their Siddur Dedication. 

The service will include most of the Kabbalat 

Shabbat and Maariv prayers as this is what the 

children are learning. To help participants learn 

the tunes and engage in the service if they don’t 

know the words, Cantor Robuck will be playing 

the piano. One of the Rabbis will also be there to 

tell a story. 

Of course our amazing Youth groups are gearing 

up for another wonderful year. All of our youth 

groups will have their opening events on August 

28! We welcome Ben Robuck as our USY advisor 

and Michele Davidson as our Kadima advisor. 

Ellen Zollman will continue to be our Olim advisor. 

There are so very many other wonderful programs 

we are off ering for our families, parents and youth 

and we hope that you will take advantage of all 

of it. 

I look forward to a meaningful new year in our 

new home.

The heat of the summer is upon us and that 

can only mean one thing. It’s almost time for 

our Annual Membership Brunch! This year 

our event will take place on August 28th at 

10:15 on Sunday morning in the ballroom 

of our beautiful new building. Everyone is 

invited to a� end and there is no cost to a� end 

the brunch. We only ask that you RSVP by 

August 21st to mensclub@ohevshalom.org. 

Of course we would love to have you as a 

member of our Men’s Club. Our membership 

dues statements have already been mailed 

and many of you have already responded. 

Our membership dues and our Super Bowl 

Fundraiser are our only two ways that we 

raise funds during the year. Did you know 

that your Men’s Club supplies the ushers for 

Shabbat and High Holy Day services, provides 

transportation and scholarship monies for our 

USYers to a� end conventions, hosts Men’s 

Club Shabbat, provides remembrance candles 

for Yom Hashoah, assists in the Hanukah and 

Purim events for our religious school, provides 

Bar/Bat Mitzvah gi� s to each and every Bar/ 

Bat Mitzvah child and sponsors many other 

events and activities during the year. We can 

only provide these funds and services with

Our monthly bike rides will continue through- 

out the summer. Our own Tour de Maitland 

winner, Jay Alpert schedules these rides for 

us and he can be reached at 407-645-2929 or 

jayalpert@mindspring.com. Jay sends out 

monthly email blasts to publicize the start 

times and place for these rides. 

Bruce Burpee is organizing our next recess 

event and our last one was very well a� ended 

which was held at Brio Restaurant in the Winter 

Park Village. May I please remind all of us that 

this is a social event which is sponsored by the 

Men’s Club. All rules of kosherate apply even 

though we are not on synagogue property. We 

ask that you respect these rules if we are to 

continue with these programs. 

Lou Lazarus is continuing to chair the Business 

Alliance meetings which are now taking place 

on the 3rd Tuesday of each month beginning 

at 7:30 a.m. at Einstein’s Bagels in Maitland on 

17-92. Please watch for email blasts that will 

remind everyone of the upcoming meetings.

SENIORS 

As President of the COS 

Seniors and on behalf of all 

our members, we would like 

to off er to every member of every commi� ee a 

very sincere Todah Raba (thank you) for fi nding 

and building our new home in Maitland. We all 

love it dearly! With that comes a very special 

thank you to our beloved Rabbi Rubinger, who 

had a very diff erent Havdalah farewell service 

to our long life on Goddard Avenue, followed 

by the most beautiful dedication in the history 

of temples (and I have witnessed two in my 

lifetime). We are all looking forward to long life 

for us, our children, and grandchildren. For those 

of you that couldn’t make it, you defi nitely missed 

a once in a lifetime presentation. 

Now back to the normal talk about the Seniors. 

We are planning to open our season on Sunday, 

September 4th at 2 p.m., SHARP (of course in 

our new home), where we will be presenting our 

President (continued from page 3) 

Soon the High Holy Days will be upon us. Although 

they are later this year, we are working on our 

planning in anticipation of not only the holidays, 

but the months that follow. There is wonderful 

and exciting programming in the works, some of 

which has not been seen before. Programming 

that will be directed to the young, older, emptynesters 

and everyone in between. Should you wish 

to be a part of that planning, please do not hesitate 

to contact a board member, or me, so we can put 

you in touch with the right person. 

As I have said many times before, thank you, our 

Ohev Idol version of American Idol, where you, 

the people will be the judges, and prizes will be 

awarded. This show will be about 1½ hours long. 

We will provide all the ice cream (along with the 

trimmings) that you care to eat, which will be 

supplied by Serenades by Sonata. This will be 

a FREE a� ernoon – no charge – zero cost – 

gornisht! You can bring all your friends, and no 

reservations are needed. 

Now, depending on the availability of the temple, 

we have booked a show for October, but more 

about that later. Gloria Yousha and her crew will 

be performing for November, and we are 

negotiating for December. So my friends, please 

mark your calendars for the fi rst Sunday of every 

month as “Ohev Senior Day,” and remember we 

will start at 2 p.m., SHARP.

Adult Education 

The Adult Education Commi� ee is planning 

new educational opportunities, and we are 

seeking member interest in the following 

programs: 

Conversational Hebrew for beginners – 

Whether you are planning to visit Israel or just 

want to learn to speak modern Hebrew, this 

class off ers an opportunity to familiarize 

oneself with the language. 

Reading Hebrew – This beginners class is 

designed for those who currently have 

diffi culty following the Hebrew in our prayer 

books or wish to improve their reading skills. 

Conversational Yiddish – This class is for 

beginners who wish to familiarize themselves 

with the Yiddish language or wish to improve 

there Yiddish skills.

class for children age 2-4 one Sunday a month

Kinderkumsitz: Jewish music and movement 

with Rabbi Kay one Sunday a month for 

children age 2-4 and their parents. This will 

take place as part of the “What’s Jewish 

About…?” class. Participants may also come to 

Kinderkumsitz only at 11:30 on the dates above. 

There is a fee for this class. 

MACHANEH OHEV LITE for K-3rd graders 

will take place on the following Sundays from 

12:30-2: September 18 Birthday Party for the
