BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE
FORGIVENESS ROCK RECORD
City Slang
SLANG 736447
0602527364476
besøk i studio av bl.a. LESLIE FEIST, AMY MILLAN og EVAN CRANLEY (begge
fra STARS), EMILY HAINES og JOMMY SHAW (begge fra METRIC), SAM PRE-
KOP (THE SEA AND CAKE), JASON TAIT (THE WEAKERTHANS), SEBASTIAN
MIKE PATTON
MONDO CANE
Ipecac
IPC 119
0689230011927
MIKE PATTON (FAITH NO MORE, PEEPING TOM, TOMAHAWK etc)
presenterer Mondo Cane, hans italienskspråklige rock-møter-orkesterhybrid.
Spilt inn under en rekke opptredener rundt om i Europa, inkludert
en utendørs konsert på en Nord-Italiensk piazza. Albumet inneholder tradisjonelle
klassisk-superstjernen ROY PACI (ZU, THE EX), for å skape den unike
nye MONDO CANE-lyden.
MORE!
Get Physical/Cooperative
KMCD 001
0602527356389
MORE! er fjerde album fra Tysklands kanskje mest populære club-duo,
BOOKA SHADE. De spilte nylig for et fullstappet Rockefeller, uten at
Gjesteopptredener
av CHELONIS R. JONES og electro-pionerene YELLO.
0634457524620
mennesket bak albumdebuterende PEARLY GATE MUSIC.
Perleporten. 9/10 SUBBA-CULTCHA “…his voice delivers a muscular melancholy
“From medieval balladry to garage rock – Glasgow quartet’s brilliant second”
4/5 MOJO “Love may be abandoned, but Trembling Bells are going from strength
Trembling Bells is a triumph” 4/5 THE GUARDIAN
BLAKE JUDD (NACHTMYSTIUM), WREST (LEVIATHAN). N. IMPERIAL
(KRIEG), STAVROS GIANNOPOLOUS (ATLAS MOTH), SANFORD PARKER
De to herrere
MAI
Anti-Records is excited to announce the impending release of an impassioned new album Li(f)e by
celebrated agent-provocateur of hip hop, Sage Francis. An underground star from his years as a battle
champion, poet and founder of influential Strange Famous Records, Francis garnered even wider
acclaim with his incendiary 2005 release “A Healthy Distrust,” a timely condemnation of corporate
greed, war-mongering and American complacency. On his electrifying new album Li(f)e, Francis turns
his keen observational skills to a culture of rampant hypocrisy and, in particular, organized religion.
This album is a marked evolution for Francis. His signature wordplay, a dazzling mix of sardonic humor
and biting social commentary, is now complimented by a talented band consisting of producer Brian
Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine) and cohorts Jim Becker and Tim Rutili of the acclaimed Chicago
outfit Califone. It proves an effective soundtrack for Francis’ riveting lyrical discourse. The record’s title
Li(f)e is a deliberate amalgamation of the words life and lie. As Francis says, “What about life is a lie?
What we’re told about God is a lie. What we’re told about race, gender roles, beauty, war, food, drugs,
sexuality, capitalism, history, the nature of humankind...a gang of lies. I feel it in my gut, I think it in my
brain, I write it with my hands and I speak it with my mouth. That’s what makes Li(f)e the general theme
of this album.” To help convey his impassioned message Francis has enlisted a cadre of uniquely talented
songwriters. The album begins with a stirring Steinbeck imbued tale of prison break entitled Little
Houdini’ with music written by ex Grandaddy frontman turned solo artist Jason Lytle. “We specifically
sought out songwriters who had never worked with a rapper,” Francis explains. “And I didn’t want them
to write music they thought they should for hip-hop. The music for ‘Little Houdini’ was a long epic instrumental
piece Jason had just hanging around which I then worked my story into.” Next up is a rousing
and energetic anthem entitled “Three Sheets” with music written by Chris Walla of the band Death Cab
for Cutie. Subsequent songs feature compositions by Tim Fite, members of Calexico, DeVotchKa, and
Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse - each interpreted by Francis and the band resulting in an entirely organic
and captivating vehicle for Francis’ dramatic narratives. Li(f)e is a thought provoking and unabashedly
original album from an evolving artist with a refreshingly distinctive voice
FORHÅND 10. MAI
Just 20 seconds into the new Phosphorescent album, you hear something so immediate,
so purposeful, so damn infectious, it’s clear that something special is underway. The first album
of original material since 2007’s Pride captures the band moving into a truly extraordinary place.
Here’s to Taking It Easy is the culmination of the past three years: a grand statement,
the album we dreamed Phosphorescent would make.
Pride was a deeply personal, haunting record that Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck
recorded on his own, playing all of the instruments himself. 2009’s To Willie (their tribute to
Willie Nelson) featured Houck joined by his bandmates, rambling through the Nelson catalog
with fifths of whiskey and undeniable swagger. So if Pride was built for 5AM and To Willie
sounded just right as last call approached, where does Here’s To Taking It Easy fit?
This is the Phosphorescent record made for any time, any season.
Featuring the current live incarnation of Phosphorescent (Scott Stapleton, piano; Jeff
Bailey, bass; ChrisMarine, drums; Jesse Anderson Ainslie, guitar; Ricky Ray Jackson, pedal
steel),Here’s to Taking It Easy is the new Cosmic American Music. Recorded in the band’s
hometown of Brooklyn with outside mixing assistance from Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat
Power, Loretta Lynn, theWalkmen), this album breathes with life like nothing Phosphorescent
has ever done before. “We’ll Be Here Soon” and “Hej, Me I’m Light” hint at the narcotic haze
of Pride, while anthems like “The Mermaid Parade” and “It’s Hard to Be Humble (When You’re
From Alabama)” sound perfect pumped out of the car stereo with the windows rolled down.
“Heaven, Sittin Down” recalls the country rock of To Willie, while the stark album closer, “Los
Angeles” sounds as if it was lifted from the grooves of Neil Young’s On the Beach. Jam after
jam, Here’s to Taking It Easy brings everything together for Phosphorescent;
a classic that could be from another era, but sounds perfect right here, right now.
FORHÅND 10. MAI
When Ryan Olson decided to make a record with Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt,
it was clear to them what the result would be: a collection of drugged-up keyboards and slick bedroom
production almost exclusively inspired by 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love.” What they didn’t know was that it
would spiral into a project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from various
scenes around the country, relocating the base of operations from Olson’s Minneapolis bedroom/studio
to the Wisconsin-based studio April Base, and the genesis of a musical super-family, Gayngs. Olson
began calling upon an eclectic cast of contributors whom he thought would share his vision, and relish in
the idea of exploring uncharted musical territory within them. The first to join the cause were Megafaun
and Ivan Howard of the Rosebuds. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce were soon to follow.
By mid-2009 the studio sessions were becoming more and more frequent, bouncing back and forth
between April Base and Olson’s bedroom. In Minneapolis, Olson brought in Rhymesayers rapper
P.O.S and his fellow Doomtree artist Dessa, psych-rockers Jake Luck and Nick Ryan (Leisure Birds),
song-birds Channy Moon- Casselle and Katy Morley, jazz-saxophonist Michael Lewis (Happy Apple,
Andrew Bird), retro-pop duo Maggie Morrison and Grant Cutler (Lookbook), and slide-guitarist Shön
Troth (Solid Gold). Vocally, Gayngs is a triumph. Zack Coulter (Solid Gold) shines from the jump, floating
over the record with his airy, haunting melodies. Fans of Bon Iver will recognize Vernon’s familiar falsetto,
but will flip when they hear his Bone Thug’s-style R&B, while P.O.S. abandons his genre entirely for a
soul inspired tenor. With over a dozen people contributing vocals, it’s incredible how cohesive the album
sounds. After a year of tracking and mixing, Gayngs is officially ready to release the album, entitled
Relayted. With each song written at 69 BPM’s, and tripped-out transitions from song to song, it is truly
an audio experience from start to finish. SELLING POINTS 1. Gayngs Relayted is the first collaboration
led by Ryan Olson of Minneapolis. Its contributors include Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Mike Noyce (Bon
Iver), POS (Rhymesayers) as well members of Megafaun and The Rosebuds. 2. Gayngs is planning
a series of release shows with participation from every musician who performed on Relayted.
3. Relayted was recorded and produced at the Vernon brothers’ studio April Base, in Eau Claire,WI.
Nothing Hurts is the Sub Pop debut and first full-length for Dalston-based trio Male Bonding.
The album was recorded in the fall of 2009 in New York and was mixed and mastered by
Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound.
Made up of Robin Silas Christian (drums), John Arthur Webb (guitar & vocals) and Kevin
Hendrick (bass and vocals), and rising from a flourishing DIY scene in their adopted hometown
of Dalston, London, Male Bonding became a very real thing in May, 2008, with their first
show, at an insane house party called “RAGE!” Male Bonding was born raging and it’s been
non-stop ever since. That party evolved in to a split 7” release with PENS on Male Bonding’s
own label Paradise Vendors Inc.
(which sold out in a week).
To date, Male Bonding has dispatched seven releases including a Flipper tribute 7”
(on Domino Records) alongside PPM Allstars, Lovvers and Ponytail.
The band has toured the UK with Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls and played shows with Lovvers,
HEALTH, Fucked Up, Graffiti Island, Mika Miko, These are Powers, NISENNENMONDAI,
Magik Markers, and Finally Punk among others.
FORHÅND 18. MAI
WINTERSLEEP spent two years touring the world in support of their last album Welcome to the Night
Sky, picking up a Juno Award back home in Canada for Best New Band and playing with the likes of
White Lies, Editors and the Maccabees along the way. Unavoidable on UK radio, whether it was with
storming live favourite, “Oblivion” or the festivalhit-in-waiting “Weighty Ghost”. They did sessions for Zane
Lowe at Radio 1, 6 Music, and XFM with platitudes heaped upon them from the likes of Mojo, Q, NME,
Rock Sound, Clash, The Fly and The Word. Lesser bands would have followed up this success with a
simple rewrite.. if it ain’t broke…instead, Wintersleep have chosen to make some of the most expansive,
dynamic, dark and courageous rock music you’ll hear this year. There’s a lot of time to kill when you play
over 200 shows a year and Wintersleep have used it to their advantage. Quality time spent devouring
work by the likes of Hank Williams, Jorge Luis Borges, Nathanial Hawthorne, Flannery O’Connor and
Karen Dalton, in between understanding the dynamics of sound in a tiny space as well as the power of a
10,000 capacity room. While their lyrics to date have focused on the personal, the songs on New Inheritors
tend towards a bigger worldview. The narrator is a voyeur, commenting on situations rather than being
in the situation itself. Without a doubt, a much more brooding, shadowy record, at times the lyrics verge
on the intentionally indecipherable - check the pre-chorus to “Blood Collection” - suggesting a menacing,
indefinable figure. Moments and memories are alluded to across multiple songs and overarching themes
of alienation and despondency crop up repeatedly. But make no mistake this is not a miserable record,
from album opener, ‘Experience The Jewel’ to the closer ‘Baltic’, New Inheritors is an album of rousing,
inspirational rock songs. Recorded in Montreal and mixed in Glasgow with Tony Doogan (Mogwai,
Malcolm Middleton, Dirty Pretty Things, Teenage Fanclub, The Delgados), Wintersleep’s sound is more
expansive, less distorted and more cerebral. For the first time, the band opted to work with both a brass
and string arranger on some songs, but rather than overpower with swathes of violins and trumpets, they
form a core part of each track rather than an awkward add-on. You may have felt like you had Wintersleep
pegged and pigeonholed but this record will undoubtedly sweep away any misconceptions and win over
a huge new audience. You may have thought you knew exactly what this record would sound like before
you clicked play or dropped a needle. But you definitely will not have been expecting this.
THE BLACK KEYS release their sixth full-length album, entitled “BROTHERSˇ, on 17th
May on V2 / Cooperative Music… Recorded at Alabama’s legendary Muscle Shoals
Sound with additional sessions at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and
the Bunker in Brooklyn, the album sees production duties handled by The Black Keys,
along with shared duties between the band, Mark Neill, and their old friend Danger
Mouse, who lends his skilled hands to a new track. Tchad Blake brings his sonic excellence
into the fold to handle mixing duties… Muscle Shoals has produced iconic recordings
from The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, and Wilson Pickett, among many others…
Carney admits Brothers is the album they’ve always wanted to make and taps into their creative
force as a duo. “Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album.
Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we’re brothers, and I think
these songs reflect that.ˇ The ghosts of Muscle Shoals inhabit Brothers’ 15 tracks. Of the album,
Auerbach says, “We like spooky sounds… like Alice Coltrane, where a dark groove is laid down.
That’s the headspace we tried to get into for this record.ˇ The album includes the Danger Mouseproduced
song “Tighten Upˇ and a cover of the Jerry Butler classic “Never Gonna Give You Up.ˇ
Its been an remarkable couple of years for THE BLACK KEYS… Their last album, 2008’s
“Attack & Releaseˇ, was by far their most successful to date, and the year culminated with
them playing a sell-out show at Brixton Academy in London… Early 09 saw Black Keys
singer/guitarist DAN AUERBACH venture out on his own with a critically-acclaimed solo
album, “Keep It Hidˇ, that covered a variety of musical styles from psychedelia and soul
via gospel and bluegrass. Late 2009 saw the Keys spread their wings further with their
celebrated BLAKROC project, an exhilarating collaboration between themselves and a
star-studded line-up of influential hip-hop artists that included Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon,
HARVEY MILK
A SMALL TURN OF HUMAN KINDNESS
Hydra Head
HH 666206
0634457525627
FORHÅND 18. MAI
Harvey Milk’s “A Small Turn of Human Kindness,” is the difference between watching a movie
like Irreversible vs. watching a movie like Independence Day. Both good films, however the first
stimulates a foreign mixture of emotions that require you to sleep it off, whereas the latter
concludes with you feeling comfortable with the fact that you’re a lazy, wasteful, culturally
sequestered American who has sat through this fucking movie way too many times in his/her
life! So, I think you get the idea, “A Small Turn of Human Kindness,” is as dense and as heavy
temperamentally as it is musically. The seven songs so subtly bleed together that the listener
has no choice, but to view the entire album as a linear orchestration with a singular ebb and
flow. A rising and falling action, refined to hell and back. And so, all of these things lead me to
believe that any and all true Harvey Milk fans will eventually argue this record as the band’s
finest work. Or at least the vinyl version will become the quintessential mantle-piece for a
generation of suburban children slumming it in the inner city you know who you are!
BIO:
Harvey Milk is a sludge/noise rock outfit formed in the early 1990’s from savannah,
Georgia. Harvey Milk disbanded around 1997. Due to increased popularity while the group was
no longer active, the band reformed (around 2008). Hydra Head released the bands first new
record after the hiatus, “Life the Best Game in Town....” “A Small Turn of Human Kindness” is
BETTYE LAVETTE
INTERPRETATIONS: THE GREAT BRITISH SONGBOOK
Anti
EPIT 70292
8714092702927
FORHÅND 25. MAI
BETTYE LAVETTE brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on her latest CD, INTERPRETATIONS:
THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK, due May 25 on Anti-. While BETTYE’s Grammy-nominated 2007 disc The Scene
Of The Crime went to the source to find triumph over her own anguish, INTERPRETATIONS looks to the past this
time for inspiration and uncovers common ancestry in seemingly divergent musical paths. Produced by BETTYE, Rob
Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13-song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led
Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, before concluding right where the very idea for INTERPRETATIONS started:
BETTYE’s visceral show-stopping rendition of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors,
which appears here as a bonus track. That performance – which first brought BETTYE together with Stevens (the
event’s producer) and Mathes (its musical director) – served notice that BETTYE is no mere singer. As an extraordinary
interpreter of song, she doesn’t merely mold a piece of music to suit her tastes; she is a conjurer of deep, emotional
truths: “Bettye LaVette punched a hole right through her version of Pete Townshend’s ‘Love Reign O’er Me,’ letting all
the song’s emotion pour out in a way that its creators never conceived,” observed the New York Daily News. Townshend
himself came up to Bettye after her performance, took her hands into his and said, “You made me weep.” Throughout
INTERPRETATIONS, her performances are a revelation not just of raw emotion, but of the inexorable ties between
British rock ‘n’ roll and the American blues and R&B, which when combined, catalyzed popular music. That Lennon,
McCartney, and so many others who crossed the Atlantic in their wake, were deeply influenced by American music is
no great secret. What BETTYE demonstrates here so convincingly is the degree to which rock ‘n’ roll and American
soul remain bound by bloodlines. The Beatles’ pre-psychedelic Rubber Soul classic “The Word” takes on an almost
religious fervor, while Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” is transformed from a majestic pop song into a stark,
almost desperate expression of devotion. Profound alienation becomes intense longing on Pink Floyd’s “Wish You
Were Here,” and the wistful naiveté of The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin” matures into a deep and unshakeable
lament. BETTYE inhabits these songs, revitalizes them and exposes the humanity that makes these 13 tracks not just
pop songs, but enduring works of art. Such mastery hardly comes as a surprise to at least one legend featured here.
Elton John (whose “Talking Old Soldiers” appeared on The Scene Of The Crime) offers this endorsement of BETTYE’s
impassioned take on “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”: “Bettye LaVette has always been a wonderful singer – I
have been a huge fan for many years. To my delight and surprise she recorded an amazing version of ‘Talking Old
Soldiers’ – a song that nobody else has covered – and made it her own. “Now she has recorded ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go
Down on Me’ and has done exactly the same – but this time with a much more familiar song. I am truly touched by her
picking these songs and can only hope that this album brings more attention to this incredible artist.”
Saint Bartlett opens up with a grandiosity yet unheard on a Damien Jurado album. It strips
away the many layers of paint from the house down the street where we know Jurado has
occupied for the last decade. The new coat is exhilarating. It makes the whole neighborhood
shine. It’s a modest grandiosity; still homegrown. The mellotron swells, heavenly handclaps
ring in stereo and big drums create a sky for the songs to fly in. And the words.Words spring
forth from within the volcano of Jurado, full of hope. There’s so much hope, in fact, that
album opener “Cloudy Shoes” turns into a call-and-response with himself, as though it were
a dialogue between two halves of himself. “I wish that I could float up from the ground / I will
never know what that’s like”
Heavy stuff. Richard Swift’s Spector-esque production is spot-on. He ferries Jurado across
the river, where the metamorphosis occurs. He then ferries him back, and it is through Swift’s
lens that we see Jurado not as a folk singer, but as a mystic — somewhere between Van
Morrison, ScottWalker and Wayne Coyne. Saint Bartlett was made entirely at Swift’s National
Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.
Get ready to celebrate a new sort of Sabaoth. GLENN DANZIG -- the man, the myth, the muscles, the
MISFITS mastermind and, of course, the master of many talents, ranging from composer to comic book
publisher -- is ending a six-year dearth of new music.
The album is his ninth and was produced by DANZIG himself. It was recorded in Los Angeles throughout
the course of 2009. The multi-tasking DANZIG handled bass duties for most of the album and even played
drums on the song Black Candy.
Deth Red Sabaoth is 11 songs strong, and some song titles include The Revengeful and On a Wicked Night.
There is also the two-parter called Pyre of Souls; part one is said to be dirgy and opens with an acoustic
guitar, a piano and DANZIG’s signature vocals, while part two erupts with electric guitar fury.
Longtime DANZIG cohorts guitarist TOMMY ViICTOR of PRONG, who has worked with the singer since
1996, and drummer JOHNNY KELLY of TYPE O NEGATIVE/SEVENTH VOID, played on the album, which
marks the first time KELLY -- who has intermittently sat behind the kit for DANZIG live shows since 2002 --
has actually recorded with DANZIG.
The album has a natural feel, thanks to the way the iconic DANZIG attacked the recording process,
choosing to steer clear of studio trickery and technology. “I think that fans will really dig this new album,” said
DANZIG in a statement. “I’ve been told several times that the album has a cool vitality to it, that it sounds
energized, and I got that feeling when I was recording it. I wanted to have an organic sound, bigger and
thicker, so I went out and bought some 1970’s Kustom tuck ‘n’ roll bass amps to play some of the guitar
parts through. You’ll hear real reverb, real tremolo on this album, which sounds completely different than the
stuff that’s done with computer chips.”
From that description, it sounds like Deth Red Sabaoth is going to be beefier than DANZIG’s arms, which
look like they could crush walnuts! The visually-arresting artwork for Deth Red Sabaoth was designed by
award winner JOE CHIODO, who has worked on dozens of graphic novels and comic books, most notably
X-Men Unlimited. It makes total sense, as DANZIG is a noted comic book fan and publisher; CHIODO also
works on DANZIG’s own Verotik publishing line.
DANZIG will tour in support of the album, with dates to be announced imminently. STEVE ZING, who played
in SAMHAIN with DANZIG, will play bass on those dates.
LIMBONIC ART RETURNS WITH ARGUABLY THEIR PRE-EMINENT OPUS “PHAN-
TASMAGORIA”. A TRUE MASTERPIECE OF WAGNERIAN BLACK METAL ART!
Formed in 1993, LIMBONIC ART for a short time existed as a four-member project. It wasn’t until
inventor DAEMON met up with local musician MORFEUS, however, that the true nucleus and
unconventional concept of the band was found. With the duo thus sorting all areas of what most
would consider a “normal” band relationship, DAEMON and MORFEUS completed a four-track
rehearsal tape that would merely hint at the band’s distinctive take on symphonic Black Metal.
Fastward to 1996 and shortly after hearing the band’s only recorded material; Nocturnal Art
Productions owner SAMOTH (of EMPEROR fame) instantly offered LIMBONIC ART a recording
deal. That autumn the band’s much-revered debut, Moon in the Scorpio, was recorded and later
released. In Abhorrence Dementia (1997), Epitome of Illusions (1998) Ad Noctum/Dynasty of
Death (1999) two collectable box sets (2000 and 2001 respectively, Hammerheart Records) The
Ultimate Death Worship (2002) followed, finding the band further widespread acclaim. Touring,
festival appearances, including their headline (and US debut) at the 2001 Milwaukee Metal Fest,
as well as outside interests (ZYKLON, DIMENSION F3H, etc) kept the duo amassed in creative
outpourings through the early millennium. After 2002s The Ultimate Death Worship, the band broke
up. Since the departure the two members have been active on different fronts, DAEMON with his
black-thrash metal band SARCOMA INC and REVOLT, and MORFEUS with DIMENSION F3H,
both releasing full-length albums. 06.06.06 the two members, DAEMON and MORFEUS, decided
to bring back the dark powerful entity LIMBONIC ART. The comeback album Legacy of Evil was
released worldwide in the fall of 2007 and was a successful return. Now in 2010, LIMBONIC ART
returns as a one piece, only with original member DAEMON, as the one and only song-writer
and craftsman behind the entity. LIMBONIC ART returns with arguably their pre-eminent opus
Phantasmagoria. A true masterpiece of Wagnerian Black Metal art! The Daemonic Era is here,
your ride now awaits!
FORHÅND 7. JUNI
It is fitting that ten seconds into Blitzen Trapper’s fifth full-length record, front man Eric Earley utters that most sacred
of rock ‘n’ roll tropes: “For to love is to leave or to run like a rollin’ stone,” he sings in the harmonized verse that leads
off the album’s epic title track, “Destroyer of the Void.” As is the case with just about every musician or band that
has employed the Blues’ greatest simile—Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, Van Morrison, the Temptations, the Rolling
Stones—Blitzen Trapper is unabashed in its embrace of tradition.
Over the course of their four full-lengths albums to date, including their revelatory 2008 Sub Pop release Furr, the
Portland band has already made that much clear. And, Earley’s considerable poetic talents and his band’s hardearned
chops have gained them a growing international audience. The band’s continuing exploration of American
music that spans from the ‘60s folk movement to the country sounds of the ‘70s, to the pop balladry and prog rock
of the ‘80s has earned it notice ranging from Rolling Stone magazine to late-night network television to Yo Gabba
Gabba, among a great many others. Destroyer of the Void takes Blitzen Trapper one step further, building on the
band’s seamless marriage of the familiar and the fantastic to, literally, create an otherworldly experience.
But there is more to Blitzen Trapper than those traditions. More than anything, the band credits its music to its Pacific
Northwest home. It is there that the six members came together ten years ago and formed a creative cauldron
from which would emerge numerous novels, a locally-celebrated play based on the film Manos: The Hands of Fate,
innumerable art projects and, of course, a flood of fantastical songs. Destroyer of the Void is only the latest work to
emerge from this world, but it is one where their musical community is on full display.
During two distant and brief breaks from the band’s near-incessant touring for Furr—one in January 2009 and the
other in January 2010— Earley and a few of his bandmates entered the attic studio of the lauded Portland musician
and studio engineer who had recorded Furr standouts “Lady on the Water” and “Black River Killer,” Mike Coykendall
(Bright Eyes, M Ward, She & Him). In those two winters, in that old attic, Coykendall worked with Earley to bring life to
these songs, including material the songwriter had been working on for years, most notably the piano ballad “Sadie.”
The producer wasn’t the only local luminary to fill out the album. Preternatural musical siblings Peter Broderick (Horse
Feathers, Efterklang) and Heather Woods Broderick (Efterklang) wrote the album’s string arrangements, while folk
standout Alela Diane lent her angelic vocals to the duet “The Tree.”
The heart of Destroyer of the Void, though, is still found in Earley’s meticulous songwriting. Here he is firmly in storyteller
mode, expanding on the mythical world he created on Furr. That album introduced listeners to a ragged but
beautiful world populated by mysterious killers, anthropomorphic narrators and benevolent women living in watery
ways. Here, those characters are joined by a wandering tailor, a black-eyed lover, a flower-tongued balladeer and,
of course, a host of lost lovers rolling along the road of life to a truly original American soundtrack.
HereWe Go Magic is a five-piece band made up of members Luke Temple, Kristina Lieberson,
Michael Bloch, Jennifer Turner, and Peter Hale. They originally came together in New York in
early 2009 through a series of chance encounters, overheard conversations and supernatural
occurrences.
From disparate musical backgrounds, the five found immediate common inspiration in a
collection of unique 4-track recordings created by lead singer Luke Temple. These recordings
were released in February, 2009 as the self-titled HereWe Go Magic (Western Vinyl).
Since this initial spark the band’s creative momentum has been unwavering. Together they have
developed a broad array of musical material and honed an explosive live sound all their own.
They spent much of 2009 on successive North American and European tours with bands such
Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear, and theWalkmen, before retreating to a house near East
Branch, NY to record their second full length LP.
Pigeons, set for release on Secretly Canadian in late Spring 2010, was produced and recorded
by Here We Go Magic over four months in the late Summer and Fall of 2009. The band plans
extensive touring in conjunction with its release.
The Gaslight Anthem’s third album reveals a remarkably powerful rock ‘n’ roll outfit honed by two years
of nearly non-stop touring. Singer/guitarist Fallon’s passionate lyrical approach has grown more personal
and introspective, his raw throated vocals stronger and more resonant against the band’s pulse-pounding
dynamic force. The album burns with the spirit of soul, the energy of punk, and the artistic ambition of any
hall of famer you’d care to name. AMERICAN SLANG is the battle cry of a great band finding its own voice
and using it to shout to the rooftops and beyond. The Gaslight Anthem hit the road hard in 2008 and never
looked back. After two straight years of touring supporting the release of their break-through album THE
’59 SOUND, the band returned home in November 2009 and took a well-earned month off before getting
back to work. For AMERICAN SLANG The band was determined to be true to their influences while not
being defined by them. Where in the past The Gaslight Anthem may have seemed overly reverential to
its inspirations, the goal here was to stake a claim for the band’s own individuality. “We had to figure out,
what are we doing?” says Fallon. “What do we have to say? What makes us different than everybody
else? So with this one, we worked really hard, to find out what we’re made of.” AMERICAN SLANG turns
up the dial on the band’s love of soul and classic rock, while still flying the flag of its hardcore roots. Songs
such as “Bring It On” and “Orphans” provide the exhilarating answer to Fallon’s musical question, what
if the Rolling Stones played with breakneck energy of Stiff Little Fingers? The stirring title track, with its
mordant acknowledgement of “when it was over/I woke up alone,” served as a kind of songwriting mission
statement for Fallon. Though his lyrics remain populated with finely etched characterizations the overall
focus is more self-directed and concise. “I was hiding a lot of things in imagery before,” Fallon says, “I was
using pictures and distractions to get my point across. This one was more about just telling it how it is.
Being like, ‘Look, I’m gonna let you in on this. This is my world and what I deal with.’” With its astonishing
range and undeniable urgency, AMERICAN SLANG is The Gaslight Anthem laying it all on the line, giving
it all they had to give. Achieving their dreams only served to fuel The Gaslight Anthem’s already limitless
ambition, driving the band to test their mettle as artists and as men. “It gave us the opportunity to get to see
what we were made of,” Fallon says. “Not a lot of people get that. It’s like, do we belong here or is there
somebody better? We’ll see what happens. To us, we did our best and that’s the thing that really matters.”
