PREFACE
The Year 2012 – recalling a fantastic Centenary Festival and entering our 101 st year . . .
As many of you are aware, the Southend Musical Festival celebrated its Centenary last year. My thanks to all
concerned in making the 2011 Centenary Festival so successful and enjoyable. Overall numbers were up by
295, which is a fantastic achievement, especially given the current financial climate – the £1,000 worth of
centenary prizes given by Peter Parsons no doubt helped to encourage more entries, but teachers have also been
extremely supportive and all the additional publicity for the centenary year must have played a part in raising
awareness. All our centenary Adjudicators were very well-received and the standard in all Sections was
astonishingly high.
Individual Sections did very well in terms of setting up and running their sessions – so well done to all
Convenors and Section Secretaries. Pam Dewey took on the role of Chief Steward – another significant
reduction of the General Secretary’s workload.
Special Centenary Events . . .
The Centenary Year was marked by several special events and, as previously mentioned, a bumper number of
entries to the Festival. The Centenary Book was published and a book launch took place in Leigh, at “The
Atelier”, followed by a book signing at Waterstones in Southend (our thanks to Sir Teddy Taylor for attending);
the floral clock on the Cliff Gardens depicted our Centenary Logo; the Festival Archive was on display at
Southend Library, together with a wonderful set of posters designed by Julie Lafferty; a grand Dinner/Dance
took place at Saxon Hall on 16 th September; posters advertising the Festival were on display at Council sites
throughout the borough; and the Festival itself had special classes and prizes, and a lucky programme draw.
The Syllabus and Programme too reflected the Centenary, with special cover designs, our medals and badges
were in the centenary colours of red and gold – and of course, thanks to a generous anonymous donation, our
Centenary certificates were also very special (a one-off design, and, for the first time ever, automatically overprinted
with individual details, rather than having to be hand-written).
The Festival itself, running from Friday 11 th to Saturday 26 th November, followed by the Prize Winners’
Concert on Sunday 27 th November, was the culmination of a wonderful Centenary Year. The centenary classes
– especially the amazing 11-entry centenary class in the Woodwind Section – were extremely enjoyable, in
particular those in which pieces originally set in 1911 were performed. Beautiful glass keepsake trophies were
awarded to the winners of our centenary classes.
Special thanks . . .
As ever, we are so grateful to our Festival Sponsors – who either support individual classes or contribute on a
more general basis towards our running costs. We should acknowledge in particular Alfred Music for
continued sponsorship of the Piano section; Benfleet (previously ABC) Music, who enable us to publish our
Syllabus and results on-line at www.MusicInEssex.info; Brian Nicholls of WebWright, who maintains the
Music in Essex website and is always on hand to answer queries and support the Festival, the Piano Pavilion
for continuing to sponsor the Senior Piano Recital and Allegro Music, who donate annual prize vouchers.
Particular mention must be made with regard to the very generous donations made to mark our Centernary: to
Peter Parsons for £,1000 prize money, John Robertson for sponsoring the Ivy Wright class and increasing the
prize to £100; and to our anonymous donors who funded the production of our centenary certificates.
Farewell . . .
It is with some sadness that we record the standing down of several of our valued helpers. I would like to say a
personal thank-you to Eve Garwood, who in her role as Sponsorship Secretary was responsible for obtaining
significant funding from KeyMed, in the form of our Festival stationery; Julie Lafferty, who worked so hard on
Centenary projects and produced the Centenary Book; Sue Greengrass, who has been Section Secretary for
Singing for nine years and a great help to Liz Elliott, our Convenor; Roger Calton, who has been our
Independent Financial Adviser for fifteen years; and of course Harry Worsfold, who has been our Treasurer for
fifteen years; it has been a delight to work alongside Harry, and we all appreciate that he has done far more in
the role of Treasurer than could ever be expected – as a token of our gratitude to Harry, we have invited him to
become an Honorary Member of the Festival.
7
Welcome . . .and hello again!
Firstly, we welcome Anne Jones, who shadowed Sue Greengrass last year and now takes over from her as
Singing Section Secretary, and Pam Dewey, who carried out Chief Steward duties for the first time last year
and has agreed to stay on. We are delighted to welcome Richard Medcalf, who will be taking over from Harry
as our Honorary Treasurer – Richard will also continue in his role as Awards Officer; and Nicholas Bard, who
has agreed to assume the role of Independent Financial Examiner. Finally, it is lovely to welcome back Sue
Greengrass – in a different role, as Festival Archivist – and Harry Worsfold, who will become Friends and
Members Secretary.
The November 2012 Festival . . .
As we embark upon the next 100 years of the Southend Musical Festival, we hope that it will continue to go
from strength to strength. The 2012 Festival will run from Friday 9 th to Saturday 24 th November, with the Prize
Winners’ Concert on Sunday 25 th November. We have re-sequenced the Sections this year, so do ensure that
you are aware of the start and end dates for each Section (on the cover of this syllabus).
New and changed classes this year . . .
Changes have been made in the following Sections:
Singing: One member of an ensemble will be able to “sing up” in Vocal Duets and Show Song
Ensembles; the age range for Junior Song Recital is now 16-17 years
Piano: Two new “any age” classes: one for music written pre-1950 by a female composer; the
other for Advanced Set Piece; the time limit for Any Age Duet has been increased to 6
minutes
Strings: Several classes are now for Viola as well as Violin; plucked strings have been split out
of the early Grade classes; the mandolin solo class has been replaced by a Latin
American plucked strings class
Speech & Drama: A new Verse Speaking class for 5-year-olds has been introduced.
New awards . . .
This year sees the introduction of three new trophies: The Joan Bransgrove Memorial Trophy donated by
Joan’s husband – this will be awarded to the winner of the Piano Solo (set piece) 8 years class; The Basildon
Youth Theatre Challenge Cup presented to the Festival at last year’s Prize Winners’ Concert by former
members of BYT, who came from all over the country to give a splendid performance – the new trophy will be
awarded at the Adjudicator’s discretion for a Junior (12 years or under) performer in the Speech & Drama
Section. The last of this year’s new awards comes from your own General Secretary. I am donating The
Annette Forkin Challenge Trophy - for the 15 years and under Chamber Music class within the Woodwind
Section.
And finally . . .
We are looking forward to the 2012 Festival, as we set out on the road to another one hundred years of
supporting music and drama performers of all ages and abilities. We hope that you are able to join us in some
capacity this year – if not as a performer, then as a teacher, parent/guardian, audience member or Festival helper
– we would love to see you this coming November.
With all good wishes for a very happy summer.
OBJECTS OF THE FESTIVAL
When our Festival was founded in 1911, the first Syllabus set out the Objects of the Festival, which are repeated
below. These timeless sentiments have been, and continue to be, honoured during the Festival's long and happy
life:
1. To encourage the study, performance and appreciation of good music by holding
Annual Public Competitions.
2. To afford the Competitors the opportunity of having their qualifications tested by
eminent musicians.
FESTIVAL HELPERS AND STEWARDS
To ensure the smooth running of the Festival, the services of at least six stewards are necessary at each of the
three-hour sessions on each day; we also need helpers to provide refreshments during these sessions. There are
several other positions which need to be covered, not all of which require you to be present at the Festival itself.
We would welcome any offer of help, however much time you have to spare. The work is rewarding and the
company is congenial!
The Chief Steward, Pam Dewey (01702-582527), would be only too pleased to chat to you about ways in which
you may able to help.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Copies of the Syllabus and Entry Forms are available from the following outlets, and the Committee wishes to
2. Child Protection Policy
Guided by the British & International Federation of Festivals, the Festival has implemented an updated Child
Protection Policy in accordance with the principles set out in the Protection of Children Act and the Children &
Vulnerable Groups Act. The CPP is printed at the end of this Syllabus.
It is of the utmost importance that the parents / guardians / carers and teachers of competitors under the age of
18 (or vulnerable adult competitors of any age) make themselves aware of our CPP and their part in its
implementation. It is also particularly important that, where parents / guardians/ carers are not personally
attending with their children, they should be satisfied that they will be accompanied to the Festival and
adequately supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf.
3. Festival Policy on the use of Cameras and Video/Audio Recording Equipment
Please note that we do NOT allow cameras, video recorders or audio recorders in the Performance Hall; the
presence of such equipment would make it impossible for the Festival to guarantee adherence to the following
rulings:
(i) Child Protection: the permission of the parent or guardian of every child under 18, or vulnerable adult
of any age, must be obtained if a photograph or recording is made of that child/vulnerable adult;
(ii) Copyright: every person recording would have to have an appropriate current licence from the
Mechanical Copyright Protection Society – this licence would have to be checked by the Festival on the
day; every person recording must have the permission of the owner of the venue and of ALL
performers; adjudicators’ words are copyright and written permission must be obtained before they can
be reproduced; the Festival is always responsible for upholding copyright and would therefore be
ultimately liable for any breach.
In addition to the above, the use of cameras and/or recording equipment can be disruptive and off-putting for
the competitors, to the detriment of their performance – a significant amount of hard work will have gone into
their preparation for this performance and it is only fair to them that we do everything to ensure that we provide
the best possible platform for them on the day.
4. Time Limits
Competitors are reminded that spoken introductions count towards their use of the time limit.
undertake an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau. All Stewards and Helpers are
recruited by personal recommendation and are issued with job descriptions, a copy of this Policy and
associated procedures; the General Secretary maintains a register of all Festival volunteers. All Stewards
are identified at the Festival by ribbons with name badges. The Officer in charge of each session will be a
Committee Member, and will wear an identifying red ribbon. If any concern arises for a child or vulnerable
person participating in the Festival, then the Officer in charge should be contacted so that the matter can
be discussed in a quiet area. Every problem will be taken seriously, and will be documented and dated in a
Festival Incident Book, which is held at each venue during the Festival and retained by the General
Secretary thereafter.
5. The Festival will make every effort to ensure that Parents/Guardians/Carers and Teachers are informed of
will look to the British & International Federation of Festivals for support and that body in turn will look to
other agencies for good practice, most notably the NSPCC and Arts Council of England policy guidelines.
