My dear fellow Cretans,

The Venizelion 

Scholarship Endowment Fund... 

Helping to nourish bright, young minds 

From the outset, when our forefathers set their sights on 

America to be their newly adopted homeland, they realized 

the importance of education. As they settled in and began 

working in back-breaking jobs in coal mines, railroads, etc., 

they recognized that, only with a proper education, can 

they share in the “fruits” of their new homeland. They also 

recognized that they must do everything in their power to 

ensure that the ensuing generations would not endure the 

suffering they had endured, due to their lack of education. 

They worked hard in menial jobs and in their small diners 

and restaurants. They put aside as much as they could from 

their meager wages and saved, so that their children would 

be able to attend schools of higher learning. And, over the 

years, they accomplished their goals, surpassing their highest 

expectations. Today, the Greek minority is, proudly, the 

top educated group in the U.S. 

With those ambitious goals in mind, our early Cretan 

community through the PAA, committed to creating the 

scholarship program. They raised funds by doing what 

they knew how to do; baking cookies, selling raffle tickets, 

engaging in church activities. They extended their support 

to young students by giving $100 and $200 scholarships; 

scholarships that were greatly needed, and even more so, 

appreciated. Recipients of these scholarships, many years 

later, would fondly reminisce about the significance that 

those small amounts made in their lives. We need only to 

listen to Dr. Nick Vidalakis of San Francisco, a recipient of a 

very modest PAA scholarship, to recognize how important, 

albeit, symbolic was this gesture from the Cretan community. 

And Dr. Nick, it must be mentioned, has reciprocated, 

many times over, through his ongoing generosity to our 

organization. 

Since its inception, our scholarship program has awarded 

nearly 1,000 Cretan students throughout the U.S. It has 

become a cornerstone of our association and one of PAA’s 

most vital missions. As evidence, the students covet the 

recognition, sometimes more so than the monetary reward, 

as this honor validates their participation in the organization 

and their academic accomplishments, among other things. 

Each year, they compete aggressively and are deeply disappointed 

if they are passed over. 

In closing, it is important to reiterate how important the 

Venizelion Scholarship Endowment Fund is to our overall 

existence, along with the other programs, which have 

become the fabric of the Pancretan Association of America. 

Our community should be proud of our history in supporting 

our youth in their journey to higher education. PAA members 

and friends continue their active support for scholarship, 

giving thousands of dollars every year. I see a future 

of promise for this lofty commitment of our association, a 

long-standing commitment that was first introduced by our 

forefathers and continues today ever strong. Thank you all 

for making our mission a reality.

Το Βενιζέλειο Ταμείο 

χρηματοδότησης Υποτροφιών... 

Βοήθημα στην εξέλιξη φωτεινών νέων 

Αγαπητοί μου Συμπατριώτες, 

Στα πρώτα χρόνια με το που έφθασαν οι μετανάστες 

στην καινούρια υιοθετημένη πατρίδα τους, την Αμερική, 

αντιλήφθηκαν τη σημασία της εκπαίδευσης. Το ξεκίνημα 

αμέσως μετά την εγκατάσταση τους ήταν δύσκολο και επίπονο 

μια που οι μόνες διαθέσιμες θέσεις εργασίας ήταν 

στα ορυχεία, στα εστιατόρια με λίγα χρήματα και ατελείωτες 

ώρες κοπιαστικής δουλειάς. Αναγνώρισαν όμως ότι, 

μόνο με κατάλληλη εκπαίδευση, θα μπορούσαν και αυτοί 

να μοιραστούν τους «καρπούς» της νέας πατρίδας τους. 

Επίσης αναγνώρισαν ότι έπρεπε να κάνουν τα πάντα για να 

εξασφαλίσουν ότι οι επόμενες γενεές δεν θα υπόμεναν το 

βάσανο που είχαν υπομείνει αυτοί. Εργάστηκαν σκληρά σε 

δύσκολες δουλειές και στα μικρά εστιατόρια τους. ‘Eβαζαν 

στην άκρη ότι μπορούσαν από τις πενιχρές αμοιβές τους 

ώστε τα παιδιά τους να είναι σε θέση να παρακολουθήσουν 

τα καλύτερα σχολεία. Και, κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου, όχι 

μόνο πέτυχαν το στόχο τους, αλλά ξεπέρασαν κάθε προσδοκία. 

Σήμερα, η Ελληνική μειονότητα είναι η πρώτη σε μόρφωση 

στις ΗΠΑ. 

Με εκείνους τους φιλόδοξους στόχους κατά νου, η κοινότητα 

των Κρητών από την αρχή, μέσα από την ΠΕΑ, δημιούργησε 

το πρόγραμμα των υποτροφιών. Συνέλεξαν τα 

απαραίτητα χρήματα με όλους τους τρόπους που ήξεραν, 

από λαχνούς, από πωλήσεις γλυκών, με την συμμετοχή τους 

στις δραστηριότητες εκκλησιών. Εδωσαν την υποστήριξή 

τους στους νέους σπουδαστές με υποτροφίες των $100 και 

$200 που ήταν απαραίτητες και ένα παραπάνω εκτιμήθηκαν 

από τους σπουδαστές. Οι παραλήπτες αυτών των υποτροφιών, 

πολλά έτη αργότερα, πολλές φορές θυμούνται με 

στοργή τη σημασία που εκείνα τα μικρά ποσά και την διαφορά 

που έκαναν στις ζωές τους. Αρκεί να ακούσει κανείς 

το Δρ. Νίκο Βιδαλάκης από το Σαν Φρανσίσκο, που ήταν πα- 

ΜήνυμαΠροέδρου 

ραλήπτης μιας πολύ μέτριας υποτροφίας της ΠΕΑ, για να 

αναγνωρίσει πόσο σημαντική, η συμβολική αυτή χειρονομία, 

από την κρητική κοινότητα, ήταν. Και πρέπει να ειπωθεί 

ότι ο Δρ. Βιδαλάκης, το έχει ανταποδώσει, πολλές φορές, 

σε πολύ μεγαλύτερο βαθμό, μέσω της μεγάλης γενναιοδωρίας 

του, στην οργάνωσή μας. 

Από την έναρξή του προγράμματος των υποτροφιών, η 

ΠΕΑ έχει απονείμει υποτροφίες σε σχεδόν 1.000 κρητικούς 

σπουδαστές σε όλες τις ΗΠΑ. Το πρόγραμμα αυτό έχει γίνει 

ένας ακρογωνιαίος λίθος της Ενωσής μας και μια από τις 

πιο ζωτικής σημασίας αποστολές της ΠΕΑ. Οι σπουδαστές 

μας χρειάζονται την αναγνώριση, μερικές φορές περισσότερο 

και από την οικονομική ανταμοιβή, από την στιγμή που 

αυτή η τιμή επικυρώνει την συμμετοχή τους στην οργάνωση 

μας, και τις ακαδημαϊκές τους επιδόσεις, μεταξύ άλλων. 

Κάθε έτος, ανταγωνίζονται και είναι βαθειά απογοητευμένοι 

εάν δεν αναγνωριστούν. 

Κλείνοντας, πρέπει να επαναληφθεί πόσο σημαντικό το 

Βενιζέλειο Ταμείο χρηματοδότησης υποτροφιών είναι για 

την οργάνωση μας, μαζί με τα άλλα προγράμματα, τα οποία 

πλέκουν αυτό που είναι σήμερα η Παγκρητική της Αμερικής. 

Η κοινότητά μας πρέπει να είναι υπερήφανη για την ιστορίας 

της και την υποστήριξη που δίνει στο ταξίδι της νεολαίας 

μας στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση. Τα μέλη της ΠΕΑ και οι 

φίλοι μας συνεχίζουν την ενεργό υποστήριξή τους για το ταμείο 

των υποτροφιών, που δίνει χιλιάδες δολάρια κάθε χρόνο. 

Το μέλλον υπόσχετε πολλά για αυτήν την μεγάλη υποχρέωση 

της Ενωσής μας, μια υποχρέωση διαρκείας που εισήχθη 

αρχικά από τους προγενέστερους μας και συνεχίζει 

σήμερα πάντα ισχυρή. Σας ευχαριστούμε όλους που κάνετε 

τους στόχους της αποστολής μας πραγματικότητα.

I am writing to express my

the hedwig Varouh scholarship. 

It has been a busy year for me. I 

graduated high school in early June 

and started my college career at 

Penn State University on July 1, taking 

some summer courses. 

I am enjoying the college experience 

very much. While the courses 

are challenging, I have learned so 

much, and I am getting involved in 

other clubs and organizations on 

campus to take full advantage of everything 

the university has to offer.

Pittsburgh, and represent the University 

at a national case competition 

in DC. Though Carnegie mellon 

has provided me with a strong 

academic foundation, professional 

fluency, and confidence, my Cretan 

upbringing had provided me with 

just as much that has not only impacted 

my college endeavors, but 

also shaped who I am. my Cretan 

heritage, respect for tradition, 

and adventure has been reflected 

throughout my experiences and has 

instilled a drive within me to take 

chances.

of my academic endeavors, and as 

I’ve mentioned before, I only hope

PAA ARCHIVES 

As chairman of the PAA ARChIVES committee, I am encouraging 

members and chapters to check their basements, 

attics and garages for convention albums, convention minutes, 

chapter lefkomata, and old chapter or PAA photos we 

might want to display some day. 

We need anything pre 1960’s, and any items or documents 

having to do with the inception of your chapter or the 

very early years. Photographs and original documents can 

be taken to kinko’s or Officemax and scanned at 300dpi and 

placed on a CD and sent to me. make sure you identify and 

date what you are sending, as well as any names recognized 

in the photo. The OFFICIAl PAA ARChIVES SEAl will be placed 

on it, bear your chapter name or your name and will be dated. 

Past Presidents’ and Secretaries’ archives are especially 

important as they identify and document the projects and accomplishments 

of their administration that would otherwise 

go unrecognized. Included in these are photos and special 

gifts presented to PAA Presidents during their term, considered 

PAA gifts should be included in our archives for display. 

All other national board members are also encouraged to 

provide their archives as documentation of their service. 

Eventually, each administration will have a special section 

for storage and preservation of its records. 

Remember, it is easy to scan onto a cd or make photo copies 

of these documents if you choose not to part with them 

at this time.

In 1950 while Nick Vidalakis 

was attending Stanford 

University, he applied for 

and received a scholarship 

from the Pancretan Association 

of America. Inasmuch 

as the award was a modest 

$350, Nick made a personal 

resolution that he will work as 

hard as he could to make his 

benefactors proud. he also “swore” that if he was fortunate 

enough to become successful, he would “give back” to the 

organization that wholeheartedly believed in him…..the rest 

is history! 

The Scholarship program of our organization has been 

the beacon of hope for many of our younger members since 

its inception, not only for its monetary reward, but also, for 

its cultural and traditional value. 

Established by our early founders, who foresaw the vision 

that education is the key to success, both professional 

and personal, it has proven to be the cornerstone of the 

Pancretan Association of America, representing the pride 

to individuals of belonging to a unit, so set on promulgating 

knowledge while at the same time, instilling the love of the 

Cretan values of culture and tradition. 

The establishment of the Scholarship Fund was first 

proposed at the 5 th PAA National Convention in 1936 in boston 

and subsequently implemented in the following years. 

Donations were generally made in memory of a deceased 

loved one. In 1997, at the 35 th PAA National Convention in 

Washington, D.C., the Venizelion Scholarship Endowment 

Fund was established. 

The fundraising drive proudly began with vengeance 

through many volunteers’ efforts and endless pursuit in 

making this dream come to fruition. Close to $1,000,000 

was raised in a relatively short period of time creating a vehicle 

of monies to be earned by investments and distributed 

for the support of higher education first envisioned by the 

early founders.

ments. The Varouh family endowment of $150,000 was the 

seed that catapulted the fund to grow to nearly one million 

dollars. The Vidalakis family endowment of $100,000 followed, 

which was designated for use by qualified students 

who wish to study at the Universities of Crete. In 2001, 

$30,000 was raised for scholarship in memory of Joanna 

Ahladiotes who was tragically killed in the Twin Towers’ 

collapse. Similar donations for the scholarship endowment 

were made in memory of Dr. George Christakis and mr. 

michael beladakis, both of whom had been devoted and 

tireless members of the brotherhood Fraternity Chapter of 

Chicago. 

These are only a few of the very generous individuals 

who honored the legacy of their loved one and chose to 

endow our organization for the creation of more scholarships 

to benefit our up-and-coming members in their pursuit 

of higher education. 

Nearly one thousand of scholarships have been awarded 

over the years to many bright, young students who subsequently 

infiltrated the fields of business, Education, medicine, 

the legal sector, the Arts, Telecommunication, Philanthropy 

and many other fields too numerous to mention. The 

Pancretan Association of America is proud of its “offspring” 

and continues to prosper through their participation, dedication 

and expertise. 

The Scholarship fund is a long-standing institution and 

pillar of our organization and with everyone’s support, it will 

allow us to accomplish all that we set out to do. We must 

continue this effort in order to realize the vision that is the 

foundation and hallmark of our organization by supporting 

the Scholarship Program with donations and endowments.

Scholarship Honoring

Announced

I begin with the phrase: “honor your father and your 

mother.” I borrow that phrase from the Old Testament as it 

is one of the Ten Commandments. What a tremendous privilege 

it was for me to have spoken in honor of my parents at 

the Arkadi-maleme dinner-dance on November 7. 

my father was chosen to receive this year’s Cretan 

heritage Award because of his passion for Crete, his activity 

in the association, his zeal for education as evidenced by his 

work with the scholarship committee and the endowment 


fund, and he is an ardent family man. 

my father’s love of Crete began in the summer of 1960 

when he graduated from Pitt Dental School and traveled 

to Crete for the first time. he immediately fell in love with 

everything about Crete; the weather, the sea, the food and 

the lifestyle. he also fell in love with a beautiful brunette 

named Despina markakis and the pair married in September 

of that year. At the time, my mother was due to return to 

Athens for her second year of college to continue her studies 

on an academic scholarship she had received after graduating 

at the top of her high school class in Chania, Crete. She 

sacrificed her education in order to uproot her life. She left 

her parents and two younger sisters and moved to a new

country to start a family with her new 

husband. At the time, that was the 

expectation of a young Cretan woman. 

I am convinced that if my mother was 

born a generation later, she would 

have a couple degrees after her name. 

She came to the United States as a 20 

year old newlywed and returned to 

her homeland in the summer of 1965 

with three small boys in tow. Over the 

course of the next 44 years, my parents 

traveled to Crete, perhaps, more than 

50 times often going twice a year for 

Easter and during the summer. We accompanied 

them nearly every summer 

in the 70’s and 80’s. 

In 1973, my father survived a 

terrorist attack at the Athens airport 

which did not deter him from continuing 

his travels to Crete. One month 

after the terrorist attack and in his early 

40’s with three boys ages 11, 10 and 9, 

my father returned to school to study 

Periodontics for a greater challenge 

after practicing general dentistry in 

burgettstown for thirteen years, and to 

be able to afford to take his family to 

Crete more often and stay in “paradise” 

for longer stretches of time. but in my 

estimation, he returned to school primarily 

to be able to educate his sons. 

And that is exactly what occurred. Our 

parents paid for all our tuition, room 

and board. This was the case for Sam 

for six years, for Adoni for seven years 

and for me, eight. We essentially were 

on scholarship. Truth is, we were on 

scholarship from the moment we were 

born into the family and here we are 

now in our mid 40’s, and we are still on 

scholarship. 

In the weeks preceding the November 

7 dinner-dance, I had several 

chances to communicate with my two 

older brothers about our father. We 

concluded that our father is far and 

away our #1 hero, he is much more 

than our best friend, we all have a 

great relationship with him, and he 

has always been the most influential 

person in our lives. 

because our parents spent quality 

and quantity time with us, they knew us 

inside and out. So when it came time 

for us to choose our respective career 

paths, our father knew us well enough 

to advise us. When Sam matriculated 

to Washington and Jefferson College, he 

majored in English literature. Realizing 

that his eldest son had a penchant for 

numbers, my father suggested that Sam 

minor in accounting. Sam has done 

some form of accounting for over 20 

years now. When Adoni graduated from 

West Virginia University with a business 

degree and was at a crossroads 

contemplating what to do with his life, 

my father suggested he try acting. he 

pointed out to his middle son that he 

was always entertaining us with his impersonations, 

so Adoni enrolled at Point 

Park College to study acting, and that is 

what Adoni has done for over 20 years. 

With me, I initially applied to dental 

school when my father advised me that 

medical school would be a better fit 

for me. I threw the dental school application 

in the garbage and applied to 

medical school. I fittingly was accepted 

into the West Virginia University School 

of medicine on my father’s 54 th birthday. 

And that has been my profession for 

over 20 years. 

When we learned that the Arkadimaleme 

chapter was to honor our 

father, we wanted to do one better and 

also heed the advice of the aforementioned 

commandment by also honoring 

our mother. So, in the spirit of 

being on scholarship our entire lives, 

we decided that the best way to do 

this would be to initiate a scholarship 

in their honor. So I was very proud to 

represent my two older brothers on 

November 7 when I announced that we 

had endowed a scholarship to the Venizelion 

Scholarship Endowment Fund of 

the Pancretan Association of America 

in honor of our parents. In the summer 

of 2010, the very first scholarship will 

be awarded. Coincidentally, it will be 

the 50 th anniversary of our father’s 

graduation from Pitt Dental School. 

moreover, it will commemorate the 50 

year anniversary of his inaugural trip 

to Crete, and the 50 year anniversary 

of his falling in love and marrying our 

mother.

του Ακρωτηρίου, ο Δήμος

Ίδρυμα Ερευνών και Μελετών 

“Ελευθέριος Κ. Βενιζέλος” 

και οι Πολιτιστικοί Φορείς 

Ακρωτηρίου, διοργανώνουν 

εκδήλωση μνήμης, την Κυριακή 

21 Φεβρουαρίου 2010, στις 

11:30 π.μ., στο Ακρωτήρι 

Χανίων. Το Α΄ μέρος της 

εκδήλωσης θα πραγματοποιηθεί 

στον ανδριάντα του Σπύρου 

Καγιαλέ (τάφοι Βενιζέλων) και 

θα περιλαμβάνει: επιμνημόσυνη 

δέηση, προσκλητήριο πεσόντων, 

κατάθεση στεφάνων, ενός 

λεπτού σιγή και ανάκρουση 

του Ύμνου της Κρήτης και 

του Εθνικού Ύμνου. Αξίζουν 

θερμά συγχαρητήρια στον κ. 

Δημήτρη Χαλιβελάκη και όλη 

την επιτροπή για την ιδέα και 

τον κόπο που έκαναν, καθώς 

και σε όλους τους δωρητές που 

έκαναν πραγματικότητα με την 

αμέριστη συμπαράσταση των 

τοπικών αρχών, την ανέγερση 

του μνημείου του Σπύρου 

Καγιαλέ πλάι στον τάφο του 

Εθνάρχη και μοναδικού επίτιμου 

Προέδρου του Συλλόγου Κρητών 

«Ομόνοια» της Νέας Ύόρκης 

και της Παγκρητικής Ενωσης 

Αμερικής. Ετσι μαθαίνουν οι 

νεότεροι την ιστορία τους, από 

πού έρχονται και η πορεία του 

μέλλοντος γίνεται ξεκάθαρη. 

Τα γεγονότα του 1897 

ακούγονται απίστευτα για 

τις νέες γενιές είναι όμως 

αληθινά. Η βιαιότητες των 

Τούρκων κατά των Χριστιανών 

και με αποκορύφωση την 

πυρπόληση των Χανίων έκαναν 

της εχθροπραξίες έντονες που 

ώθησαν το ξεκίνημα της Κρητική 

επανάσταση του 1897. Στις 22 

Ίανουαρίου ορίστηκε έδρα της 

επανάστασης το Ακρωτήρι στο 

νομό Χανίων. Το «Επαναστατικό 

Στρατόπεδον Ακρωτηρίου» όπως 

επονομάστηκε είχε Διοικητική 

Επιτροπή αποτελούμενη 

από τους: Αντώνιο Σήφακα, 

Ελευθέριο Βενιζέλο, Νικόλαο 

Πιστολάκη, Κωνσταντίνο 

Φούμη, Χαράλαμπο Παπαδάκη, 

και Γ. Μυλωνογιάννη. 

Λεπτομερής καταγραφή 

των γεγονότων περιέχονται στο 

ημερολόγιο του Ακρωτηρίου 

που διατηρούσε η Διοικητική 

Επιτροπή μέσα στο οποίο είναι 

καταγεγραμμένα λεπτομερώς 

όλα τα γεγονότα και όλες οι 

ενέργειες των επαναστατών, 

καθώς και η έκβαση του αγώνα 

τους για την ελευθερία και την 

ένωση τους με το υπόλοιπο 

ελεύθερο κομμάτι της πατρίδας 

τους, της Ελλάδας. Καθοριστικό 

ρόλο σε αυτή την επανάσταση 

έμελε να παίξει η Ελληνική 

Σημαία που δόθηκε στους 

επαναστάτες από τον ύπαρχο 

Κανάρη, εγγονό του ήρωα της 

επανάστασης Κωνσταντίνο 

Κανάρη, και Διοικητή του 

Ελληνικού θωρηκτού Ύδρα και 

από ένα, μέχρι τότε άγνωστο, 

επαναστάτη τον Σπύρο Καγιαλέ 

ή Καγιαλεδάκη. Στις 3:30μμ 

περίπου ξεκινά ο μεγάλος 

βομβαρδισμός εναντίον 

του Στρατοπέδου όπως τον 

παρουσιάζεται στο «Ημερολόγιο 

του Στρατοπέδου του 

Ακρωτηρίου»,... « οι ήχοι των 

ομοβροντιών των πλοίων ήταν 

εκκωφαντικοί και έμοιαζαν 

με ισχυρές βροντές που 

ακούγονται μόνο όταν πέφτουν 

κεραυνοί. Οι βολιδοφόρες 

οβίδες κατά την έκρηξή 

τους, προκαλούσαν κρότο 

μεγαλύτερο από τις βολές των 

πυροβόλων. Στο πανδαιμόνιο 

των κρότων προστίθετο 

και ο κρότος καταιγιστικών 

πυροβολισμών. Η ηχώ όλων 

αυτών, πολλαπλασιαζόταν 

μέσω των βουνών του 

Ακρωτηρίου και συγκλόνιζε 

κυριολεκτικά όλη την ευρύτερη 

περιοχή, που την μετέβαλε 

σε πραγματική κόλαση. Το 

μελανό χρώμα των οβίδων, 

φαινόταν καθαρά στον αέρα.

έκρηξή τους. Αφθονος μαύρος 

καπνός και βαθυκόκκινες 

φλόγες, ανακατεύονταν με 

σύννεφα σκόνης και με βροχή 

από χώματα, λίθους, βράχους 

και κομμάτια από ερείπια που 

προκαλούσε η πρόσκρουση των 

βλημάτων στο έδαφος». 

Μια οβίδα βρίσκει τον ιστό 

της Ελληνικής Σημαίας και την 

καταρρίπτει τότε μετά από διαταγή 

του οπλαρχιγού Μιχ. Καλορρίζικου 

ο οπλίτης Σπύρος Καγιαλεδάκης 

αναστήλωσε την σημαία. Σύμφωνα 

με τον Ίερόθεο Ηγούμενο της 

Μονής Αγίας Τριάδας και αυτόπτη 

μάρτυρα τρείς φορές ανέστειλε 

τη σημαία ο Καγιαλές και την 

τελευταία κάνοντας ιστό το ίδιο 

του το κορμί. Το ημερολόγιο του 

Ακρωτηρίου γράφει για το συμβάν: 

«Τεμάχιον σφαίρας κατέρριψε 

την σημαίαν, άλλο’ ο γεναίος 

οπλαρχηγός Μιχ. Καλορρίζικος 

διέταξε να αναστηλώσωσιν 

αυτήν. Πάραυτα ο ατρόμητος 

οπλίτης Σπύρος Καγιαλεδάκης 

εν τω μέσω της χαλάζης των 

βολιδοφόρων αβίδων ήρπασε 

τον κοντόν και ανεστήλωσε την 

σημαίαν εις την προτέραν αυτής 

θέσιν. Οι επί του καταστρώματος 


της Ύδρας Ελληνες αξιωματικοί 

και λοιποί θεαταί, οίτινες μετ’ 

αγωνίας και μεγίστης ψυχικής 

συγκινήσεως παρηκολούθουν τον 

βομβαρδισμόν, εξερράγησαν εις 

ζητωκραυγάς και χειροκροτήματα 

επί τω συγκινητικώ θεάματι 

της τοσαύτης γενναιότητος 

των ολίγων εκείνων προμάχων 

του Προφήτου Ηλιού. Το 

επεισόδιον τούτο έχυσε 

βάλσαμον παραμυθίας εις την 

μεγίστην λύπην ην επροξένει 

το αποτρόπαιον θέαμα της 

Χριστιανικής αντισταυροφορίας 

και επλήρωσε δικαίας 

υπερηφανείας τας καρδίας των 

γενναίων αξιωματικών και του 

πληρώματος εν γένει της Ύδρας…» 

Ο Ίταλός υποναύαρχος 

τότε, Κανεβάρο, διέταξε την 

άμεση κατάπαυση του πυρός. 

Γράφει στα απομνημονεύματά 

του: «Μου έκανε βαθιά 

εντύπωση η ψυχραιμία των 

επαναστατών. Μου έφερε 

δάκρυα στα μάτια η στάση των. 

Μου συγκλονιζόταν η ψυχή 

όταν μετά από κάθε οβίδα 

ακουγόταν η ζητωκραυγή: 

Ζήτω η Ελλάς! Η ανύψωση της 

σημαίας με αυτόν τον τόσο 

ηρωικό τρόπο, αποτέλεσε μια 

στιγμή της ζωής μου που δεν θα 

λησμονήσω ποτέ. Η ψυχή μου 

ήταν απ’ αρχής μαζί τους, όπως 

και των πληρωμάτων μου, που 

βομβάρδιζαν με πόνο στην 

καρδιά και ζητωκραυγάζοντας 

τους γενναίους». (Εφημερίδα 

«Ηνωμένος Τύπος» Χανίων, 

9 Φεβρουαρίου 1937). Οπως 

επίσης αναφέρετε στο Το 

ημερολόγιο του Ακρωτηρίου: 

«…Μικρόν δε μετά την 

αναστήλωσιν της σημαίας το 

πυρ της μάχης κατέπαυσε, 

ταυτοχρόνως δ’ εσίγησαν και 

τα Ευρωπαϊκά τηλεβόλα.» 

Πρόσφατα η Νομαρχία 

Χανίων τύπωσε αναμνηστική 

έκδοση με τίτλο «Σπύρος 

Καγιαλές-Καγιαλεδάκης, Ο 

Θρύλος του Ακρωτηρίου». 

Μια αξιέπαινη προσπάθεια 

μια που υπάρχει και στο 

διαδύκτιο (Internet) στην 

διεύθυνση www.kayales.gr που 

συμπεριλαμβάνει μετάφραση 

σε άλλες πέντε γλώσσες. 

Ομως πιο εμπεριστατωμένη 

με πάρα πολλές λεπτομέρειες 

είναι η έκδοση του Δήμου 

Χανίων με την ευκαιρία 

των αποκαλυπτηρίων του 

Μνημείου Σπύρου Καγιαλέ που 

προλογίζεται από τότε Δήμαρχο 

Χανίων κ. Γ. Τζανακάκη. 

Η σημαντική συμβολή της 

Παγκρητικής Ενωσης Αμερικής 

δεν πρέπει να σταματήσει, είναι 

μεγάλη ανάγκη για όλους τους 

Κρήτες όπου και αν βρίσκονται 

να θυμούνται και να σκέπτονται 

το που ερχόμαστε και που 

πρέπει να πάμε. Ύποχρέωση 

όλων μας είναι να στηρίζουμε 

ιδέες και προσπάθειες που 

έχουν αυτό το σκοπό.

Gregory C. Pappas, Chairman of the PAA Foundation, Inc. 

was presented with the annual “Three hierarchs Award for 

the Promotion of hellenism” in New york City on January 

29th. 

The award was presented by his Eminence Archbishop 

Demetrios, head of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of 

America and the Very Reverend Eugene Pappas, Protopresbyter 

of the Three hierarchs Church in brooklyn, New york. 

The award, awarded annually to an individual who has 

worked toward the promotion of hellenism, is presented in 

conjunction with the commemoration of the feast day of the 

Three hierarchs. 

Previous recipients include his Excellency Ambassador 

loukas Tsilas, Executive Director of the Onassis Foundation, 

Eugene Rossides, founder of the American hellenic Institute 

in Washington DC and Antonis Diamataris, publisher of the 

National herald. 

The presentation of the award was made at the Three 

hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church, following the vesper service 

that commemorates the three saints who each worked

tirelessly for the preservation of Greek philosophy and 

thought in the early Christian church. In the Greek Orthodox 

Church, Saints basil, Gregory and John Chrysostom are 

grouped together in a single feast day on January 31st and 

are commemorated throughout the world for their dedication 

to Greek education.

The PAA, in coordination 

with its chapters, continues 

to present a series of events 

dedicated to the Splendor 

of our Greek and Cretan 

Culture and heritage. This 

series will include theater, 

concerts, and presentations 

on Erotokritos, kazantzakis, 

and the Cretan diet, just 

to name a few. Our goal is 

to continue our efforts to 

reconnect older generations 

with their origins and inspire 

younger generations to keep 

our traditions alive in the 

years to come.

στις Ελληνικές παροικίες την θαυμάσια 

κωμωδία, «Της Αγάπης τα Παθήματα», 

από τον αξιόλογο θίασο «Θέατρο 

Κρήτης» που έρχεται από την Ελλάδα. 

Η σημερινή εποχή που είναι γεμάτη 

από άγχος, και αγωνία στην προσπάθεια 

μας να ανταποκριθούμε στις ανάγκες 

της, το γέλιο η χαρά και το τραγούδι, μας 

είναι περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά 

απαραίτητο. Στην Κρήτη και γενικότερα 

στην Ελλάδα έχομε πολύ πλούσιο και 

αυθόρμητο χιούμορ που σε συνδυασμό 

με την εκφραστικότητα της Κρητικής 

διαλέκτου μπορεί να προσφέρει 

ανεπανάληπτη ψυχαγωγία.

τις πρωτοβουλίες, είναι να φέρομε τις 

παλιές και τις νέες γενεές πιο κοντά στις 

πολιτιστικές παραδόσεις και έθιμα της

και Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου.

Haiti disaster 

Relief Effort 

“I am only one; but still I am one. 

I cannot do everything; but still I can do something. 

I will not refuse to do the something I can do.

Since this was an effort the success of which 

is attributed to a number of individuals, I wish to 

begin by saying “ThANk yOU” to all the members 

of Pasiphae; Omonoia, and labrys, who contributed. 

Special thanks goes to manouso kandounato 

for his valuable help. Thank you, also, to 

manoli kouroupaki; Nickola zoulaki; and Stavro 

zoulaki of hellas Fm. 

Finally, a “special” thank you goes to some 

of the non-Cretan Greeks of Astoria. For, when 

they learned from hellas Fm of our effort to collect 

emergency relief items, they did not hesitate 

to brave the freezing cold; and deliver, whatever 

they were able to contribute, to the designated 

concentration point–the Omonoia Cretan house, 

at 32-33 31st Street, Astoria, New york. 

Last, but certainly not least, I wish to thank 

Mr. John Kriara, Omonoia’s newly-elected President. No 

sooner he had taken the oath of office, when he volunteered 

to borrow Panagioti Rodami’s, whom we thank, van. 

He also helped to load and unload it. 

by now we are all aware of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake 

centered just 10 miles off haiti’s capital Port-au- 

Prince, on January 12, 2010. It destroyed most of the capital, 

including buildings and infrastructure and impacted 

over three million people. As of February 12, Direct Relief 

International reports that “an estimated 200,000 people are 

dead, 1.5 million displaced and 194,000 injured.” 

Probably all of you know that haiti is the poorest nation 

in the Western hemisphere. A nation where five U.S. dollars 

is enough to feed a family, for one week. yet, as if that 

were not enough, this major earthquake has devastated sections 

of its capital and knocked out telephone communications 

throughout the country. It also destroyed much of the 

already fragile and overburdened infrastructure in the most 

densely populated part of the country.

In view of such a devastating 

catastrophe that 

struck haiti, the rest of 

the world’s nations, rich 

and poor alike, had to; and 

somehow did, become one. 

Not philosophizing, by any 

means. however, one cannot 

help but wonder: Why 

should it take such a horrendous 

event, for people 

to exhibit their humanity? 

Obviously, this multinational 

humanitarian effort 

must have been extremely 

difficult. Not only did they 

have to deal with destroyed 

infrastructure; but they also 

needed to provide help; 

and not hinder the efforts of 

the search teams that were 

working there. In addition, 

they had to make certain 

that all of the volunteers 

would be safe, when they 

got to haiti. 

As a member of the 

Cretan Women’s Association 

Pasiphae, I am well aware of 

its philanthropic activities, 

through the years. At our 

General meeting of January 

15, the motion to donate 

the amount of $1,000 (One 

Thousand Dollars, ) towards 

the victims’ immediate medical 

needs, was unanimously 

passed. Added to that was 

$660 (Six hundred Sixty 

Dollars,) from the collection 

box, at the Annual Vasilopita 

luncheon. The amount of 

$1,660 (One Thousand Six 

hundred Sixty Dollars,) was 

donated through the Red 

Cross. On January 17, at 

Omonoia’s monthly general 

meeting, the members voted 

to give Pasiphae an additional 

$1,000 (one Thousand 

Dollars) to donate to this 

cause. We thank them for 

that. (When the new board 

has “settled down,” and we 

receive this amount, we will 

make sure and give it, where 

it was earmarked for.) 

however, having learned

that haiti was the first nation to recognize 

our motherland Greece in 1821, 

when she gained her independence 

from the barbaric occupation by the 

Turks, I knew that as hellenes, we had 

to do more. And we did. … 

Realizing that the American Red 

Cross; the Salvation Army and other such 

organizations were accepting monetary 

donations only; and that the earthquake 

victims needed everything a person 

needs in order to survive, I decided to do 

some research. I was primarily interested 

in organizations that would fill both immediate 

and long-term needs of the haitians. 

Organizations such as: Direct Relief; 

NOAh Ny (National Association for the 

Advancement of haitians;) and EDEyO. 

This is one of the organizations that have 

joined forces with The Dreams for youth 

Wutang movement to coordinate haiti 

relief efforts in New york and New Jersey. 

Edeyo, which means “help them” 

in haitian Creole, is an independent 

not-for-profit organization dedicated to 

improve the future of children in haiti by 

rebuilding dilapidated schools, supplying 

students with learning materials, and 

providing them with nutritional support. 

For your information, my decision 

to work with Edeyo was made after I 

was informed that: a) in 2007 it had 

opened the doors of its newly-renovated 

school in bel Air, one of the poorest 

shantytowns of haiti’s capital, to its 

first group of students. That school 

was providing free education and a 

daily meal to over 300 boys and girls. 

So, Edeyo was already championing the 

children’s causes. 

b) Edeyo Inc. is recognized as a taxexempt 

organization under Section 501(c) 

(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and as a 

public charity qualifies for the maximum 

charitable contribution tax deduction. 

100% of all donations are spent on program 

activities in haiti. The staff in the 

U.S. are volunteers who work from their 

homes so, unlike larger organizations, 

there are no salary or overhead office expenses. 

(Something worth remembering, 

if any of our members wish to make some 

kind of monetary donation to haiti.)

And c) Edeyo’s response to the disaster, 

which is: to continue supporting 

the children of haiti. They plan to rebuild 

the school, finding ways to support 

the children and their families, to improve 

their educational programs; and 

to introduce mental health programs to 

help the children and their families cope 

with the trauma that they have experienced; 

and still are experiencing. 

my dear Cretan brothers and 

sisters, can any of us even begin to 

imagine the magnitude of the trauma 

these families are experiencing? And 

what about having to live in Tent Cities? 

These are the new homes of the 

capital’s displaced residents. 

They are rickety quarters comprised 

of bed sheets, propped up on sticks 

and held together with ropes, in which 

nearly 500,000 haitians have moved 

in. how can these people survive, now 

that the rains are “unmercifully pounding 

on them?” It would be difficult for 

anyone to quantify the amount of help 

needed, especially, if one adds to the 

above the fear of burglaries, rape; and 

even murders that are bound to multiply, 

due to lack of electricity. 

Obviously in light of the above our 

decision to initiate the drive to col- 


lect items needed, was a “no brainer.” 

Just, as was our decision to store those 

items, as they were coming in, in Pasiphae’s 

office. This is a small area, big 

enough for the board to meet. It has 

special meaning to us because its walls 

are decorated; not with paintings from 

Crete, the Cretan house has enough of 

those; but with pictures of Pasiphae’s 

various boards, through the years. So, 

with some imagination, one can almost 

detect the very pulse of the Cretan 

soul, in this otherwise plain room. 

Perhaps second only to the feeling 

one gets when doing something good 

for his/her fellowman, was the feeling 

that a group of truly remarkable women 

were looking down at the collected 

items, as they were multiplying, and 

approving of our effort. by that I mean 

the ones that were charter members of 

Pasiphae, (some of those in the larger of 

the pictures.) Some names that come 

to mind are those of Psaki, makrigianni; 

Vlahaki; Stavroulaki; Generali, 

Rodousaki, Constantoulaki; Vasilaki and 

my mother-in-law Aspasia Nakis (kartsonaki,)—standing, 

first one from the 

right. may they all rest in peace. 

Dear brothers and sisters, this article 

was written not so much as, to advertise 

what we are doing in Pasiphae, 

although we did have a very successful 

drive (please see list.) It was written, 

primarily, to appeal to all those who 

for whatever reasons, did not have the 

time to address this extremely worthy 

cause. Please do not feel that now 

is too late. Unfortunately, the need 

to help haiti will be there, for a very 

long time to come. Please remember: 

What better time to help our fellowman, 

than during lent ….

A Dual Celebration! 

March 25 th is a vitally 

important day for 

the Greeks around 

the world, not only 

for its national 

significance as a “Day 

of Independence”, but 

also, as a religious 

observance. It is truly 

a time of reflection and 

celebration. 

The Feast of the 

Annunciation of the 

Blessed Virgin Mary is 


observed on this day in 

the Christian calendar. 

The Archangel Gabriel 

appeared to Mary and 

announced the news 

that she was pregnant 

with the Divine child. 

On the same 

day in 1821 the 

Bishop Germanos 

of Patras raised the 

Greek flag at the 

Monastery of Aghia 

Lavra in Peloponnese 

and, thereby, 

inciting the “War of 

Independence” with an 

uprising against 400 

years of occupation 

and oppression by the 

Ottoman Turks. The 

cry of “Freedom or 

Death” was heard all 

throughout Greece as 

they bravely fought the 

War of Independence 

for 9 years (1821- 

1829) until a small part 

of modern Greece 

was finally liberated 

and declared an 

independent nation. 

It is believed that 

the nine lines of the 

Greek flag reflects the 

number of syllables 

in the Greek phrase 

“Eleftheria i Thanatos” 

= Freedom or Death. 

In this spirit, the 

Greek Independence 

Day Parades are

celebrated annually by 

Hellenes throughout the 

world. There is a school flag 

parade in every town and 

village in Greece and an 

impressively, large armed 

forces parade is held in the 

capital city of Athens. Here 

in the United States, many 

Greek communities organize 

parades, invite dignitaries to 

join in the festivities, along 

with church groups, schools, 

organizations, musical and 

dance groups, to march down

Οπως κάθε χρόνο ο Σύλλογος των Εν Νέα Ύόρκη Κρητών 

«Ομόνοια» είχε την ορκωμοσία του Νέου Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου 

μαζί με την ορκωμοσία του Νέου Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της 

«Λάβρυς». Η εκδήλωση έγινε την Κυριακή, 31 Ίανουαρίου, 2010 

με την ευκαιρία της εορτής των Τριών Ίεραρχών που είναι και οι 

προστάτες του Συλλόγου μας. Ο εκκλησιασμός έγινε στον Ίερό 

Ναός Αγ. Κωνσταντίνου και Ελένης στο Jackson heights. Την 

τελετή ορκωμοσίας τέλεσε ο Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου των Τέως 

Προέδρων κ. Γιώργος Διγενάκης. 

Τα νέο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο της Ομόνοιας απαρτίζεται

PSILORITIS 

Στις 22 Ίουνίου 2009 η Αντριάνα & Δάση Βαβάνης κόρη 

του Κώστα Μιχελάκη έφερε στον κόσμο το πρώτο τους 

παιδί, ένα όμορφο αγοράκι τον Athan babani. 

Επίσης και η Αλεξία Γεωργία Σκούρος κόρη του Κώστα 

και της Ζωής Μιχελάκη έφερε στον κόσμο ένα πανέμορφο 

αγοράκι τον Νίκολα Σκούρο. 

Το Συμβούλιο του Συλλόγου εύχονται στους γονείς, 

αλλά και στους παππούδες και γιαγιάδες να τους ζήσουν 

και με το καλό να τα δουν και γαμπρούς. Συγχαρητήρια να 

σας ζήσουν και να τα δείτε όπως επιθυμείτε. 

Ο Μανώλης Σαβάκης από το Spartanburg της Νότιας 

Καρολίνας εόρτασε τα 60α γενέθλια του «big 60» μαζί 

με την οικογένεια του και πολλούς φίλους. Τον εορτασμό 

προγραμμάτισαν τα παιδιά του. Ο Πρόεδρος και το 

Συμβούλιο του εύχονται χρόνια πολλά, να τον χαίρεται η 

οικογένεια του και να τα εκατοστίσει. 

Ο Σύλλογος καλωσορίζει την Μαίρη Γεωργεδάκη με 

την οικογένεια της που μετά από πολλών μηνών διακοπών 

στην Κύπρο γύρισαν στο σπίτι τους. Καλώς ορίσατε και 

καλό καλοκαίρι. 

Στις 23 Δεκεμβρίου ο πατριώτης μας κος Σπύρος 

Τσάβλας από την Νότια Καρολίνα είχε ένα σοβαρό 

ατύχημα. Επίσης η κα Μαρίκα Παπαδάκη έκαμε εγχείριση 

στο γοφό της. Ο Πρόεδρος και το Συμβούλιο της εύχεται 

ταχεία ανάρρωση και σύντομα μαζί μας. 

Στις 17 Ίανουαρίου ο Σύλλογος μας έκοψε την 

Βασιλόπιτα στο σπίτι του κου. Νίκου Ζαχαράκη μαζί με 

πολλά μέλη του Συλλόγου μας που ήρθαν εκείνο το βράδυ 

εκεί. Σερβιρίστηκαν πολλά νόστιμα φαγητά, τσικουδιά και 

κρασί. Ηταν μια καλή διασκέδαση αλλά και συγκέντρωση 

του Συλλόγου μας εκείνο το βράδυ. 

Psiloritis would like to congratulate mr. Dash and Andriana 

babani on the birthday of their son Athan babanis and 

mr. Alex and mrs. Georgia Skouros who are also celebrating 

the birthday of their son Nicolas Skouros. Congratulations 

to the families and to grandparents. 

On January 24th, 2010, our member mr. manoli Savakis 

from Spartanburg, South Carolina, celebrated his 60th 

birthday. mr. Savakis’ family gave him a surprise party at 

his home. many of his friends were there. The president 

and the board wish him many more years. 

We wish speedy recovery to mr. Spiros Tsavlas from 

South Carolina who was injured in an auto accident and to 

mrs. marika Papadakis from Charlotte who had hip surgery. 

On January 17, Psiloritis Chapter got together at the 

home of mr. and mrs. Nikos zaharakis for the cutting of the 

vasilopita. A chapter meeting was held the same night. 

We thank them for the delicious dinner and the filoxenia.

Μεγάλη επιτυχία σημειώθηκε στην Ετήσια 

Χριστουγεννιάτικη Χοροεσπερίδα της Νεολαίας 

«Λεβεντογέννα», η οποία εκδηλώθηκε το Σάββατο στις 

5 Δεκεμβρίου, στο χώρο του Συλλόγου «Ψηλορείτης». 

Παρόντες της εκδήλωσης αυτής ήταν προσκεκλημένοι από 

πολιτείες όπως το Καναδά, το Πίτσμπουργκ και το Σικάγο, 

καθώς και μέλη από τα Ελληνικά Σωματεία του Μίσιγκαν. 

Οι καλλιτέχνες της βραδιάς αυτής ερχόμενοι απ’ ευθείας 

από τη Κρήτη, ο Ανδρέας Λιλικάκης στη Λύρα, και ο 

Αντώνης Παπαδάκης στο Λαούτο, διατήρησαν το κέφι μέχρι 

τις πρωινές ώρες της Κυριακής. Αξίζει και φέτος πάλι να 

δοθούν τα συγχαρητήρια στα τρία χορευτικά συγκροτήματα 

του σωματείου της νεολαίας μας «Λεβεντογέννα» για 

την απόδοσή τους, καθώς επίσης και στους Στέφανο 

Στεφανάκη, Δέσποινα και Μαρία Κατάκη για την οργάνωση 

της εκδήλωσης. Μπράβο σε όλους, Καλή Χρονιά, και του 

χρόνου με υγεία! 

βάΦτιςη Κάι Γέννά 

Τη Κυριακή της 29ης Νοεμβρίου, και στον 

Ελληνορθόδοξο ναό του Τιμίου Σταυρού στο Ουίντσορ του 

Καναδά, το ζεύγος Ελένη και Μανούσος Βυζιράκης βάφτισε 

με μεγάλη του χαρά τη μικρή Μαρία Κ. Βυζιράκη, με νονό 

της μικρής το Νικόλαο Κουτέλας. Από τους παρόντες της 

τελετής αυτής δεν θα μπορούσαν να λείψουν οι γονείς του 

Μανούσο, ο κ. Ανδρέας και η κα. Κόνη Βυζιράκη, καθώς και 

ο κ. Σάκης και η κα. Πανωραία Διονυσόπουλος, γονείς της 

Ελένης Βυζιράκη. Εις πέρας της τελετής συγγενείς και φίλοι, 

ερχόμενοι από το Ντιτρόιτ, το Ουίντσορ και από το Τορόντο 

του Καναδά, μαζεύτηκαν στο Αμπάσαντορ Γκόλφ Κλάμπ για 

τον εορτασμό του γεγονότος. Συγχαρητήρια, να σας ζήσει 

και να τη δείτε όπως επιθυμείτε! 

Μετά από αυτό το ευχάριστο γεγονός, το ζεύγος 

Βυζιράκη μας επιφύλασσε άλλη μία είδηση το Σάββατο 

της 19ης Δεκεμβρίου και ώρα 3:00μ.μ., όπου μας έφεραν 

στη ζωή ένα πανέμορφο κοριτσάκι, την μικρή Ελεάννα Π. 

Βυζιράκη. Η μικρή Ελεάννα γεννήθηκε στη Νοσοκομειακή 

Μονάδα Ουίλιαμ Μπόουμαντ στο Ρόϊαλ Οουκ του 

Μίσιγκαν, με μήκος/ ύψος των 8 inch και ζυγίζοντας 5lbs 

3oz. Συγχαρητήρια, να σας ζήσει και να τα χαίρεστε και τα 

δύο! 

Γέννά 

Τη Πέμπτη 14 Ίανουαρίου και ώρα 2:45μ.μ., ήρθε στο 

κόσμο ένα πανέμορφο κοριτσάκι της οικογενείας Δόκτωρ 

Μιχαήλ και Δεμαρής Κασοτάκη. Η μικρή Αριάννα Κατερίνα 

Κασοτάκη γεννήθηκε στη Νοσοκομειακή Μονάδα Αγίου 

Ίωσήφ στο Αν Αρμπορ του Μίσιγκαν, με μήκος/ ύψος των 

81/2inch και ζυγίζοντας 6lbs8oz. Συγχαρητήρια στο ζεύγος 

και στη Δήμητρα, τη μικρή αδερφή της Αριάννας, καθώς 

επίσης και στους γονείς των γονέων, το κ. Εμμανουήλ και 

τη κα. Δήμητρα Κασοτάκη, το κ. Τάκη και τη κα. Αικατερίνη 

Σταμπουλλέλη, να σας ζήσει και να τα χαίρεστε! 

ΚΟπη βάςιΛΟπιτάς 

Τη Κυριακή 17 Ίανουαρίου, και εις πέρας της 

πρώτης γενικής συνελεύσεως του νέου έτους, έγινε η 

πατροπαράδοτη κοπή της βασιλόπιτας στο σύλλογο του 

Ντιτρόιτ «Ψηλορείτης», υπό την παρουσία μελών των 

συλλόγων «Ψηλορείτης», «Κρήτη» και «Λεβεντογέννα», 

καθώς και υπό τη παρουσία του κυβερνήτη της 4ης 

Περιφέρειας, το κ. Νικόλαο Βερικάκη. Να αναφέρουμε 

πως το φλουρί της βασιλόπιτας έτυχε στη κα. Γεωργία 

Νικολουδάκη, μέλος του συμβουλίου, στην οποία 

ευχόμαστε ό,τι καλίτερο για το Ετος 2010. Επίσης θα θέλαμε 

να ευχαριστήσουμε και φέτος πάλι τη κα. Μαρία Μαράκη, 

τη δημιουργό των δύο υπέροχων βασιλοπίτων! 

Κατά τη διάρκεια της συνελεύσεως έγινε η απονομή 

τιμητικής πλάκας στο Γιάννη Μαράκη, ο ένας από τους 

χοροδιδασκάλους του συλλόγου μας, πρώην αντιπρόεδρος 

καθώς και μέλος του συμβουλίου, και σύμβουλος της 

νεολαίας. Στη μακροχρόνια και πολύπλευρη προσφορά του 

ως προς το ‘Ψηλορείτη’, ο Μαράκης αποτέλεσε το κύριο 

αίτιο για το οποίο έχουμε το Ελληνικό Σχολείο στο σύλλογό 

μας. Ενα όραμα το οποίο έγινε πραγματικότητα, ένα έργο 

πρωτοποριακό για ένα σύλλογο της Παγκρητικής Ενώσεως 

Αμερικής. Μας έχει προσφέρει πολλά, στάθηκε πάντα 

αντάξιος των καθηκόντων του, και για αυτούς και πολλούς 

άλλους λόγους του αξίζουν τα χίλια συγχαρητήρια! Εις 

ανώτερα! 

ςΥΛΛΥπητhριά 

Τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια στέλνουμε στις οικογένειες 

του αποθανώντος κ. Μιχάλη Καραγιαννάκη, καταγωγής 

Νίο Χωρίου, Αποκόρωνου Χανίων. Ο κ. Καραγιαννάκης 

απεβίωσε το Σεπτέμβρη του 2009 στη Φλόριντα, όπου 

και διέμενε εδώ και 15 χρόνια. Μετανάστευσε στην 

Αμερική το έτος 1951, και εις πέρας της θητείας του στον 

Αμερικάνικό στρατό, ανέπτυξε τη δική του επιχείριση 



εστιατορίων με ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία, έφερε τα αδέρφια 

του από τη Κρήτη, γνώρισε και παντρεύτηκε τη Μαρία 

Βαΐδάκη από τα Χανιά, με την οποία έφεραν στο κόσμο 

5 παιδιά. Συνάμα, αποτέλεσε μακροχρόνιο και ενεργό 

μέλος του συλλόγου “Ψηλορείτης”, στον οποίο υπηρέτησε 

και ως πρόεδρος. Επιθυμία του κ. Καραγιαννάκη ήταν να 

κηδευτεί στο Νιό Χωριό, μαζί με τους γονείς του. Και πάλι 

εκφράζουμε τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια στις οικογένειες 

του αποθανώντος! 

Τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια στέλνουμε εξίσου στους 

Νίκο και Μεταξία Λάμπερσον για το χαμό της μητέρας τους, 

τη Γιαννούλα Μήχας. Η Γιαννούλα απεβίωσε το περασμένο 

Δεκέμβρη στην Αθήνα απ΄όπου και τελέστηκε η ταφή της. 

Και πάλι εκφράζουμε τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια σε όλους 

τους συγγενείς του αποθανώντος! 

Τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια στέλνουμε και στο ζεύγος 

Νικόλαος και Νίκη Κασοτάκη, και σε όλη την οικογένεια 

Πουλάκη, για το χαμό της Ανδρονίκης Πουλάκη, η 

μητέρα των γονέων Βασίλειος και Αικατερίνη Πουλάκη. Η 

Ανδρονίκη απεβίωσε στις 8 Ίανουαρίου του 2010 σε ηλικία 

των 89 ετών στο χωριό Αγιος Γεώργιος, στο Λασίθι της 

Κρήτης. Μερακλίνα από μικρή, είχε αναπτύξει μία ιδιαίτερη 

λατρεία προς το Κρητικό χορό, και αυτό είναι εμφανές 

από το γεγονός το ότι είχε λάβει μέρος σε όλα τα γλέντια 

στα οποία είχε παίξει ο πατέρας της, ο συγχωρεμένος ο 

λυράρης Γεώργιος Πετρουλάκης. Η Ανδρονίκη αφήνει πίσω 

τέσσερα παιδιά, τέσσερα εγγόνια και τρία δισέγγονα. Και 

πάλι εκφράζουμε τα θερμά μας συλλυπητήρια σε όλους 

τους συγγενείς του αποθανώντος!

ήταν Ίδιαίτερα

από τον άξιο αδελφό

Καλογρίδη. Μετά 

την τελετή του 

μυστηρίου έγινε ένα 

θαυμάσιο γλέντι 

στο πολυτελέστατο 

κέντρο, Pines manor 

στο Edison NJ, όπου 

συγγενείς και φίλοι γιόρτασαν την είσοδο της Κυριακής 

στην Ορθοδοξία. Η Κυριακή είναι επίσης η εγγονή του κ. 

Πολύδωρου και κα. Κυριακής Καλογρίδη όπως και του κ. 

Σπύρου και κα. Στέλλας Βενιζέλου που ζουν στο Columbus, 

Ohio. Νονοί της νεοφώτιστης Κυριακής, είναι ο κ. Μιχάλης 

Συμεωνίδης και η κα. Βασιλική Κωνσταντίνου, για τους 

οποίους είμαστε σίγουροι ότι η Κυριακή θα τους έχει 

πάντα καλούς συντρόφους στη ζωή της. Ο πρόεδρος και 

το διοικητικό συμβούλιο του συλλόγου εύχονται ολόψυχα 

στην οικογένεια Καλογρίδη και την οικογένεια Βενιζέλου, 

η νεοφώτιστη Κυριακή , να τους Ζήση και να την δουν να 

γίνει Σπουδαίος Ανθρωπος στην Ζωή της. Επίσης ευχόμαστε 

στους νονούς να είναι πάντα άξιοι στην Ζωή τους!

ARIADnE 

In kendalia, a few miles outside San Antonio, Texas, we 

are blessed to have the monastery of holy Archangels. It 

is a beautiful monastery located in the hills north of San 

Antonio. When you come here, you feel you are magically 

transported to a home away from home. It is a peaceful and 

tranquil place where one can really find himself. 

The monks here are very friendly and make us feel 

welcome while they also safeguard the traditions of a truly 

Greek Orthodox monastery. The people are simple Ortho-


dox Christians from all different backgrounds. They come to 

find peace and worship the lord in a simple but magnificent 

way. most of them do not even speak Greek but, as I was 

told by one Russian 

lady, this is not an 

obstacle. Those of us 

who do not know the 

Greek language understand 

the liturgical language 

of the Orthodox 

church, and we try 

to learn some Greek 

as well. We love the 

chanting of the Greek 

psalms, which somehow 

do not sound 

the same when one 

translates them in a 

different language. 

many members of 

our Pancretan chapter “Ariadne” regularly attend the liturgy 

here, where have met and made friends with several people 

from all over the state of Texas and even some from as far 

away as Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Several military 

people that come to San Antonio from Greece for training 

come to the monastery frequently. It is heartwarming and 

gives us a sense of pride to see so many of our young Greek 

military be so close to our Orthodox faith and church. here 

is where we meet all these wonderful young people, and the 

only sadness it brings us is knowing that when they complete 

their training they will be returning back home to Greece.

wife Elizabeth

had to move to 

San Diego for 

additional training, 

but when 

their baby boy 

arrived, they

with her mother maria Farmaki. George and Olga zombana- 

kis with their young son from houston also were present. 

Celebrant of the holy sacrament of baptism was Fr. Joseph. 

The beautiful reception was hosted by Eleni kylitis, Vivian 

Smith, and Ritsa Winters. We want to congratulate Antonio 

and Elizabeth, the proud parents of sweet little Andrea, 

and wish them a happy, healthy and successful future. 

If you ever visit San Antonio, make sure to stop at the 

holy Archangels monastery in kendalia, a home away from 

home. 

mARCh 25Th we will be celebrating the Greek Independence 

Day. Every year we commemorate this day in remembrance 

of the sacrifices of our ancestors. Three hundred and 

sixty-eight years of Turkish occupation did not break their 

spirit, but the fire of freedom burning deep in their hearts 

surfaced on march 25th, 1821, and marked the beginning 

of the Greek revolution against the Turkish nation. Since the 

fall of the byzantine Empire on may 9th, 1453, to the Ottoman 

Empire, they did not forget the very same things that 

we are so privileged to enjoy freely today because of their 

sacrifices. let us not forget the dear price that was paid in 

order to safeguard the precious inheritance they have given 

us: the freedom to enjoy and preserve our Greek Orthodox 

faith, our culture, our language, and history of our motherland 

Greece. It is our duty to remember year after year and 

to teach the younger generation that no matter how things 

change through the globalization of the world, there are still 

some things that must remain the same, and it is our duty to 

safeguard them.

Recently, two of our members, Chris and Carol Daskalos, 

had to relocate to houston. We would like to wish them 

well. Chris and Carol: we miss you and we are keeping you in 

our prayers. Also, we wish a speedy recovery to maria Geer, 

another member of our chapter. 

We wish happy birthday to Anthony kylitis, Constantinos 

kylitis, Eleftheria Winters, lindsey butler, Aaron Geer,

PROODOS 

Στις 5 Δεκεμβρίου 2009, είχαμε το ετήσιο 

Χριστουγεννιάτικο Πάρτι για τα παιδιά των μελών τού 

συλλόγου μας. Οι υπεύθυνες Χριστίνα Stebbins και Μαίρη 

Περάκη φρόντισαν και τα παιδιά πέρασαν ένα πολύ ωραίο 

απόγευμα, ακόμα και οι γονείς μοιράστηκαν την χαρά των 

παιδιών. Ο Αγιος Βασίλης μοίρασε πλούσια δώρα στα 

παιδιά. Ευχαριστούμε τον κ. Steve Stebbins πού έπαιξε τον 

ρόλο τού Αγιου Βασίλη. 

Την Κυριακή 13 Δεκεμβρίου 2009, είχαμε το ετήσιο 

Χριστουγεννιάτικο Πάρτι των μελών τού συλλόγου μας, 

αμέσως μετά από την γενική συνέλευση. Οι υπεύθυνες κ. 

Μπέση Μαυρεδάκη και Ρούμπη Περάκη, με την βοήθεια 

όλων των κυριών τού διοικητικού συμβουλίου, ετοίμασαν 

ένα αξέχαστο πρόγραμμα και τα μέλη μας είχαν μια 

πραγματική όμορφη, γιορταστική βραδιά. Η Επόπτρια των 

Γυναικείων τμημάτων κ. Μαρία Στρτουδάκη μάς έστειλε 

τις ευχές της για το πάρτι μας και για τις γιορτές των 

Χριστουγέννων και της Πρωτοχρονιάς. 

Ο σύλλογός μας και συγκεκριμένα η επιτροπή ασθενών, 

κάθε χρόνο τα Χριστούγεννα, επισκέπτονται και προσφέρουν 

γλυκίσματα, δωράκια και λουλούδια εις τούς ηλικιωμένους 

Ελληνες της περιοχής μας σε διάφορα γηροκομεία. 

Ευχαριστούμε τις κυρίες της επιτροπής Ευαγγελία Τρίκας, 

Τίνα Κατσουνάκη και Μαίρη Καβράκη όπου εφέτος 

επισκέφθησαν 30 ηλικιωμένους σε διάφορα γηροκομεία. 

Επίσης ευχαριστούμε την κ. Σοφία Παπαδοκωνσταντάκη για 

τις ωραίες κάρτες πού στέλνει εις τα μέλη μας. 

Το Σάββατο 16 Ίανουαρίου 2010, οι τρείς Σύλλογοι 

“Πρόοδος”, “Μίνως-Κρήτη” και η “Νεολαία Μίνως-Κρήτη”, 

γιορτάσαμε με Potluck την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας. Μέλη 

και φίλοι πέρασαν μια πολύ ωραία οικογενειακή βραδιά. 

Ευχαριστούμε τις υπεύθυνες κ. Γεωργία Ντουλάκη και 

Ευαγγελία Τρίκας. Η Πρόεδρος κ. Ευαγγελία Παπαμαρκάκη 

μεταβίβασε το ευχητήριο γράμμα της επόπτριά μας κ. 

Μαρίας Στρατουδάκη, για την κοπή της βασιλόπιτας, εις 

όλους τούς παρευρισκομένους. 

Στις 6 Ίανουαρίου 2010, διοργανώσαμε ημερήσια 

εκδρομή εις την Νέα Ύόρκη. Επισκεφθήκαμε την έκθεση 

Εl Greco και διάφορα μέρη εις το Μανχάταν και εις 

την Αστόρια. Ευχαριστούμε τις υπεύθυνες κ. Μπέση 

Μαυρεδάκη και Ευαγγελία Παπαμαρκάκη για μια αξέχαστη 

ημέρα. 

Την Δευτέρα 15 Ίανουαρίου 2010, Καθαρή Δευτέρα, 

ανοίξαμε την Σαρακοστή. 

Μέλη και φίλοι μαζευτήκαμε εις τον σύλλογό μας, 

για μια ακόμα ευχάριστη βραδιά, με παραδοσιακά 

νηστίσιμα φαγητά. Ευχαριστούμε τις υπεύθυνες κ. Γεωργία 

Μαλανδράκη και Χριστίνα Stebbins.

Θερμά συλλυπητήρια προς τούς Παναγιώτη και

βοήθεια. Ύπηρέτησε σε διάφορες θέσεις εις το συμβούλιο 

τού συλλόγου μας και Πρόεδρος το 1973 και 1974. Θα μείνει 

πάντοτε εις την σκέψη μας και στην καρδιά μας.
