Banffshire will become a ghost country and can see a mass exodus". (It didn't happen
of course. Looking back forty years one can distinguish very little that arose from the
report. Provost Taylor couldn't foresee the developments that would accrue from the
decided this at their meeting on Monday evening. Police Judge Gowie suggested that
in addition to the Christmas tree strings of coloured lights should be hung around the
square.. The Burgh Surveyor, John Murray thought that one of the most effective
ways of brightening up the town centre would be to floodlight certain buildings and
features such as the North Church, All Saints and the War Memorial. In addition
coloured lights could be put on the tower of the North Church.
Swimming charges at Strathlene pool to be increased - In an attempt to reduce
the financial loss incurred in operating the municipal open air bathing pool at
Strathlene, Buckie Town Council are to increase the charges next season, in most
cases to double to what they are at present. Last year's charges are given in brackets
. Juveniles 1/ (6d), adults 2/- (1/-) Banffshire school parties if accompanied by a
person in charge 6d (3d) Season ticket - Juveniles 10/- (7/6), adults 15/- (12/6).
Spectators - Juveniles 6d(3d), adults 1/- (6d)
Different opinions were expressed on the wisdom of increasing the charges before the
vote was taken. Provost Douglas thought that the new charges had been set at a
realistic level in this day and age while Police Judge Gowie said that it was something
that simply had to be done. Councillor McKenzie was of the opinion that it would
have been better to reduce the charges, which would be likely to attract more people
to use the pool. Councillor McIntosh said , " I think that the new charges will kill the
pool all together and even less revenue than that of £180 last year is likely to be
gathered".
A recommendation made was that the pool would open on Sunday afternoons from 1
till 6 p.m. during July as an experiment.
