Scope and Content: Sub-Series consists of 20 files of handwritten and typed drafts and manuscripts, metatext and relevant correspondence with editors related to Watson's two published novels, namely Deep Hollow Creek and The Double Hook and her unfinished unpublished novel Landscape of the Moon. The files have been arranged by novel and then chronologically. Detailed file- level descriptions are available in the Sheila Watson Fonds Manuscripts and Drafts series Finding Guide. Notes: No publication of this material, in whole or in part, without the permission of the Literary Executor. No reproduction of this material without permission of the Archivist. Title based on contents of the sub-series. Date based on estimated dates of composition. Additional draft material of Watson's novels The Double Hook and Landscape of the Moon can be found in the Diaries, Reading Journals and Day Planner series. MANUSCRIPTS OF SHORT STORIES Title: Manuscripts of Short Stories Date Range: 1938 - 1980 Physical Extent: 4.3 cm of textual material (325 p.) Scope and Content: Sub-Series consists of 13 files of handwritten and typed drafts and manuscripts of four of Watson's six published Short Stories, namely "Brother Oedipus", "Antigone", "The Rumble Seat" and "And the four animals..." and five unpublished Short Stories, featuring the characters Hania, Oedipus, Eurydice, Orpheus, Daedalus and Aesop, and a fragment of literary prose fictionalizing her experiences in Paris. There is no surviving documentation of Watson's first published short story "Rough Answer", which appeared in The Canadian Forum 18: 212 (September 1938): 178-180, nor "The Black Farm (A Modern Allegory)", which was first published in Queen's Quarterly 63:2 (Summer 1954): 220-228. The files have been arranged chronologically, frequently relying on the publishing dates of the Short Stories. 27 of 142
