Fairtrade’s<br />
the fashion<br />
This year's Fairtrade Fortnight theme calls<br />
on everyone to be proud of buying Fairtrade<br />
products and ‘show off your label’.<br />
Buying products <strong>with</strong> the Fairtrade logo<br />
is a straightforward way of giving poor<br />
people in developing countries a chance to<br />
work their way out of poverty.<br />
In <strong>Brent</strong> the council is focusing on one<br />
of the most important Fairtrade products,<br />
cotton. Fairtrade cotton was launched in<br />
Britain six years ago and is now worth<br />
around £50 million a year through sales<br />
from leading high street stores.<br />

special fashion event to mark Fairtrade<br />
Fortnight at the town hall on 3 March.<br />
There will be a series of fashion<br />
photographs capturing well-known<br />

models on display as well as African food,<br />
stalls, schools displays and short films,<br />
including Sir Steve Redgrave visiting<br />
Fairtrade cotton producers in Mali.<br />
The event will be opened at 5pm by<br />
the Mayor of <strong>Brent</strong>, <strong>Council</strong>lor Harbhajan<br />
Singh. Speakers will include Ben<br />
Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty.<br />
Fairtrade gives millions of people in<br />
Africa, Asia and Latin America a chance to<br />
work their way out of poverty <strong>with</strong> dignity,<br />
by guaranteeing a decent price for what<br />
they produce.<br />
On top of that, they are paid a premium<br />
that their community decides how to<br />
spend, for example on health facilities.<br />
They are assured of safe working<br />
conditions and the right to form trade<br />
unions.The local environment is<br />
<strong>Brent</strong> <strong>Council</strong> will be<br />
joining the nation in<br />
celebrating Fairtrade<br />
Fortnight 2011 which<br />
runs from 28 February<br />
until 13 March.<br />

special for millions of producers of food,<br />
drink, footballs, flowers and cotton. And it<br />
is also special for us in <strong>Brent</strong>. Buying<br />
products <strong>with</strong> the Fairtrade logo is an easy<br />
way we can help poor people thousands of<br />
miles away.”<br />
<strong>Brent</strong> <strong>Council</strong> is committed to Fairtrade<br />
and aims to become a Fairtrade Borough,<br />
working <strong>with</strong> the community through the<br />
<strong>Brent</strong> Fairtrade Network.<br />
