New head of BYP appointed<br />
Elections for the new <strong>Brent</strong><br />
Youth Parliament (BYP)<br />
executive took place recently<br />
at <strong>Brent</strong> Town Hall, <strong>with</strong><br />
Kishan Parshotam elected as<br />
the new chair of BYP.<br />
Kishan, 18, a member<br />
of Northwick Park Youth Club,<br />
came top of the polls last<br />
weekend <strong>with</strong> 65 per cent of<br />
the vote. Four other executive<br />
members were also elected.<br />
Kishan will serve for two<br />
years representing <strong>Brent</strong> on<br />
the UK Youth Parliament<br />
and on <strong>Brent</strong> Children's<br />
Partnership Board.<br />
He said: “Being elected as<br />
chair was a massive surprise.<br />
It was great to see everyone<br />
getting thoroughly engaged<br />
<strong>with</strong> the election process.<br />
However, BYP has a lot of<br />
good work to build on – we<br />

The council’s Voluntary Sector<br />
Team is inviting applications<br />
from <strong>Brent</strong>-based voluntary<br />
organisations and<br />
community groups for a<br />
one-off grant of £5,000.<br />
The Edward Harvist Trust<br />
Fund is awarded to local<br />
organisers of one-off<br />
projects including events,<br />
activities and summer play<br />
schemes that benefit<br />
residents in the borough.<br />
Projects must take place<br />
between July 2011 and 31<br />
March 2012. Successful<br />
applicants will be notified by<br />
1 May 2011 and funding<br />
must be spent by 31 March<br />

need, provide alternatives and<br />
be completely proactive. The<br />
72 members will be fighting<br />
for the rights of the 72,000<br />
young people that we<br />
represent.”<br />
The four newly-elected<br />
executive members are:<br />

Michaels Project as vice-chair,<br />
Seyedeh Banei-Moniri, 15,<br />
from Crest Girls' Academy as<br />
media representative,<br />
Cassandra Cheng, 17, from<br />
Claremont High School as<br />
UK Youth Parliament<br />
representative and Kyron<br />
Nearly 600 residents turned<br />
out at the area forums in January<br />
and February to hear the Leader<br />
of <strong>Brent</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, Ann John<br />
OBE, explain the cuts to <strong>Brent</strong>'s<br />
funding.<br />
People who live and work in<br />
<strong>Brent</strong> were also able to have<br />
their say about the issues that<br />
concern them.<br />
Cllr John said: “<strong>Brent</strong> is having<br />
to make some pretty tough<br />
<strong>Council</strong> officers have been<br />
given the green light to<br />
explore the possibility of<br />
redeveloping Willesden<br />
Green Library on the basis it<br />
can be done at no cost to<br />
the council.<br />
If possible, the plans would<br />
see the building transformed<br />
into a 21st century multifunctional<br />
centre that<br />
provides all the services of<br />
the current library and more.<br />

<strong>Council</strong> Leader explains tough decisions<br />
decisions at the moment and it<br />
was helpful to be able to talk to<br />
residents about their concerns.<br />
“I hope the forums helped<br />
people understand that we<br />
cannot continue to provide the<br />
same level of services <strong>with</strong> a<br />
quarter of our funding removed.”<br />
There are five area forums<br />
covering all the wards in <strong>Brent</strong>.<br />

working <strong>with</strong> private developers<br />
to establish if building<br />
homes on part of the site<br />
could fund the cost of building<br />
a new multi-use centre.<br />

arrangement is possible,<br />
residents can expect to be<br />
